The largest invasion the world has ever seen kicked off on 22 June 1941, as Hitler's massed forces swarmed across the border into the Soviet Union. Operation Barbarossa, as the campaign was named, was supposed to last just ten weeks. In fact, Germany enjoyed five months of victory before they were eventually denied and turned away at the very gates of Moscow. Thus, the long and slow road to defeat began. This new book by Robert Kirchubel outlines Germany's ambitious hopes for Operation Barbarossa via a careful selection of photos.
In typical style for this series of Concord books, the work begins with some concise background text. Here the author explains what led up to the invasion of Russia, as well as providing salient points about the campaign right up to Operation Typhoon, the final assault on Moscow. The core of "Barbarossa" is the set of superb black and white photographs that document this spectacular, but ultimately futile, campaign. Soldiers are seen in all sorts of contexts in the vast steppes of Russia through contemporary camera lenses. There is a wide variety of vehicle types and weapons on show, which will please readers. Vehicles such as trucks, horse-drawn carriages and halftracks are all in evidence, as are numerous captured or destroyed Russian tanks and military vehicles. Photo captions are brief but provide relevant data and information about this long and arduous campaign.
The artist Ramiro Bujeiro has also provided four color plates depicting realistic-looking impressions of German soldiers and officers. These are accompanied by detailed descriptions giving pertinent facts about uniforms and personal equipment. This is an interesting volume packed with unique photos from this important campaign. As the writer states in his concluding paragraph, "When the war in Russia transformed from one of maneuver to one of attrition, it became a war Germany could no longer win." Readers wishing to see how Operation Barbarossa played out, and how German soldiers participated in it, will find this book a valuable ally.

German forces made impressive advances across vast swathes of Russia after Operation Barbarossa was launched in 1941. Indeed, Blitzkrieg reached the very gates of Moscow. Yet, the Battle of Stalingrad in 1942 marked a decisive turning point in the tide of war on the Eastern Front. What began was a long series of setbacks and defeats, with German forces being rolled back inexorably by the massive Russian juggernaut. The territory that was captured so quickly in 1941-42 was soon being fought for all over again, with German troops extracting a very high price as Russian troops advanced towards Berlin. This new book by Gordon Rottman examines pictorially this long fighting retreat of German forces, with the focus being on the closing years of the war from 1944-45.
This book begins with a concise explanation of the situation in 1944-45, and how German units were organized to try and overcome acute shortages of personnel. Additional divisions were raised in the form of Luftwaffe field divisions, Waffen-SS divisions manned by non-Germanic recruits, and Volkssturm (this name translates as 'People's Assault') units filled with those too young or too old for regular units. The book then proceeds to exhibit German soldiers from this time period in a series of black and white photos. While most photographs portray soldiers, several also show equipment like tanks and transport vehicles. The uniforms and weapons of these soldiers as they retreated westward are on full display, and the selection of photos will no doubt provide plenty of modeling inspiration or historical information. The photo content even extends to showing Volkssturm personnel in the closing weeks of the war.
The centerpiece of the book is a series of four color plates by illustrator Dmitriy Zgonnik. These portray grenadiers from a range of units as they appeared in combat, with pertinent comments on their uniforms, personal equipment and weapons outlined in the accompanying captions. There is a lot of interest in the closing years of WWII, and this book offers a fine collection of photos showing the German infantryman as he fought for his own survival and that of his nation.

This is the story of the British breakthrough begun on 30 July by 11th Armoured Division, Guards Armoured Division, and the infantry of 15th (Scottish) Division. This was initially opposed by 21. Panzerdivision, and later by the Germans' most powerful formations in the west: 9. SS-Panzer `Hohenstaufen' and 10. SS-Panzer `Frundsberg'. Under the hot summer sun, thrust met with counter thrust in a rapidly changing mobile battle, culminating in the August struggle for mastery of Perrier Ridge and Estry, and the Germans' headlong retreat from Normandy.
In common with other titles in the 'Over the Battlefield' series, this entirely new study brings together previously unseen evidence to present an important Normandy battle in very great detail. The unfolding action is illustrated using aerial photography of the battlefield and period Army maps supported by extensive illustrations.

Hitler s mountain troops or Gebirgsjager were a group of elite soldiers ready for battle, whatever the conditions. These mountain men were trained to ski, climb and endure long marches, survive appalling conditions and were given a role as crack shock troops. Yet many of the campaigns in which the Gebirgsjager fought were on level ground where they had little opportunity to demonstrate their unique skills. Instead, they were invariably employed as assault infantry in conventional battle, a role in which every individual trooper excelled, but not one for which they had been trained. They fought in virtually all theatres of World War, notably on the Eastern Front, where operations took them into the Caucasus.
