Monica Duffy Toft - Securing the Peace; The Durabl e Settlement of Civil Wars (2009).jpg

Timely and pathbreaking, Securing the Peace is the first book to explore the complete spectrum of civil war terminations, including negotiated settlements, military victories by governments and rebels, and stalemates and ceasefires. Examining the outcomes of all civil war terminations since 1940, Monica Toft develops a general theory of postwar stability, showing how third-party guarantees may not be the best option. She demonstrates that thorough security-sector reform plays a critical role in establishing peace over the long term.

Much of the thinking in this area has centered on third parties presiding over the maintenance of negotiated settlements, but the problem with this focus is that fewer than a quarter of recent civil wars have ended this way. Furthermore, these settlements have been precarious, often resulting in a recurrence of war. Toft finds that military victory, especially victory by rebels, lends itself to a more durable peace. She argues for the importance of the security sector--the police and military--and explains that victories are more stable when governments can maintain order. Toft presents statistical evaluations and in-depth case studies that include El Salvador, Sudan, and Uganda to reveal that where the security sector remains robust, stability and democracy are likely to follow.

An original and thoughtful reassessment of civil war terminations, Securing the Peace will interest all those concerned about resolving our world's most pressing conflicts.

Meltem Ahiska - Occidentalism in Turkey; Questions of Modernity and National Identity in Turkish Rad io Broadcasting (2010).jpg

All History - Meltem Ahiska - Occidentalism in Turkey Questions of ... National Identity in Turkish Radio Broadcasting 2010.jpg

From the early Attaturk years, Turkish radio broadcasting was seen as a great hope for sealing the national identity of the new Turkish Republic. Since the inaugural broadcast in 1927, the national elite designed radio broadcasting to represent the "voice of a nation." Here Meltem Ahiska reveals how radio broadcasting actually showed Turkey’s uncertainty over its position in relation to Europe. While the national elite wanted to build their own Turkish identity, at the same time they desired recognition from Europe that Turkey was now a Westernized modern country. Ahiska shows how these tensions played out over the radio in the conflicting depictions and discrepancies between the national elite and "the people," "cosmopolitan" Istanbul and "national" Ankara, and men and women (especially in Radio drama). Through radio broadcasting we can see how Occidentalism dictated the Turkish Republic’s early history and shaped how modern Turkey saw itself.

Caglar Keyder - The Definition of a Peripheral Eco nomy; Turkey 1923-1929 (2009).jpg

The period of Turkish history from the foundation of the Republic in 1923 to the depression in 1929 was characterised by a minimum of state intervention in the economy. This book, which illuminates the ways in which the forces of world capitalism acted upon and structured the peripheral formation of the Turkish economy in this period, provides a clear case study in the relationship of dependent economies to the capitalist world-system. Professor Keyder emphasises the importance, as mechanisms in the maintenance of existing economic relations, of two networks: that of trade, connecting producers with external markets; and that of credit, through which a dependency between foreign suppliers of funds and local users was established. This important contribution to the theoretical analysis of economic dependency will interest historians, economists and sociologists studying both historical and contemporary forms of economic peripheralisation.

Osprey PL - WBH 31 - John Tincey - Bitwa nad Marst on Moor 1644, Początek końca (2010).jpg

John Hannavy - Encyclopedia of Nineteenth-Century Photography (2007).jpg

The Encyclopedia of Nineteenth-Century Photography is the first comprehensive encyclopedia of world photography up to the beginning of the twentieth century. It sets out to be the standard, definitive reference work on the subject for years to come.
Its coverage is global – an important ‘first’ in that authorities from all over the world have contributed their expertise and scholarship towards making this a truly comprehensive publication. The Encyclopedia presents new and ground-breaking research alongside accounts of the major established figures in the nineteenth century arena. Coverage includes all the key people, processes, equipment, movements, styles, debates and groupings which helped photography develop from being ‘a solution in search of a problem’ when first invented, to the essential communication tool, creative medium, and recorder of everyday life which it had become by the dawn of the twentieth century. The sheer breadth of coverage in the 1200 essays makes the Encyclopedia of Nineteenth-Century Photography an essential reference source for academics, students, researchers and libraries worldwide.

Miniatury morskie EWM 4-4 - Gabriel Szala - Bitwa w zatoce Aboukir.jpg

Frederick Brown - From Tientsin to Peking with the Allied forces (1902).jpg

The Rev. Frederick Brown of the Methodist Episcopal Mission in Tianjin volunteered as a chaplain since, as he said, British soldiers fought better if they felt they had the chance of a Christian burial nearby. Brown listed General Barrow's marching orders for the British force which included Royal Welsh Fusiliers, Royal Engineers, Bengal Lancers, with Sikhs and Rajputs bringing up the rear. Brown described how 'The British race had relieved the legations, notwithstanding that they had given an undertaking "not to lead the column"; but they had carried off the honours' and must have been heartily disliked by their comrades-in-arms as a result.

All History - Philippa Hoskin, Christopher Brooke, Barrie Dobson - ...astical History Studies Presented to David Smith 2005.jpg

The work of historians in pring new editions of primary documents, and other aids to research, has tended to go largely unsung, yet is crucial to scholarship, as pring the very foundations on which further enquiry can be based. The essays in this volume, conversely, celebrate the achievements in this field by a whole generation of medievalists, of whom the honoree, David Smith, is one of the most distinguished. They demonstrate the importance of such editions to a proper understanding and elucidation of a number of problems in medieval ecclesiastical history, ranging from thirteenth-century forgery to diocesan administration, from the church courts to the cloisters, and from the English parish clergy to the papacy. The sense of place and the sense of lineage pervade this book, combining with the author's wide-ranging command of the period in its broader dimensions to give the reader a picture of medieval Scotland which surely surpasses anything hitherto available both in the clarity of its outline and the sharpness of the illustrative detail.... a combination of the general with the particular which is the lifeblood of historical writing.

All History - Jukka Rislakki - The Case for Latvia. Disinformation ...ons and Straight Answers about a Baltic Country 2008.jpg

Rislakki is a real chronicler of history and also a live witness of events. This book is an excellent opportunity for a Western readership to get to know Latvia's history and present. ... Europa mus nesupratis [Europe will not understand us] - this is the main chorus of a popular song on Latvian Radio in 2004, which is the opening sentence of the book. Let us hope that this study will decrease this lack of understanding of Latvia among Europeans.

Glencoe World History; In Graphic Novel (2010).jpg

Graphic novels represent a signifi cant segment of the literary market for adolescents and young adults. These stories may resemble comic books, but on closer inspection, they often address controversial issues using complex story lines. Some graphic novels that are well known to Western audiences are Watchmen, which examines how superheroes live in a society that has turned against them; Maus, which uses anthropomorphic characters to tell the story of a Holocaust survivor; From Hell, which presents one explanation for the actions of the historical serial killer Jack the Ripper; and Road to Perdition, which was made into a popular motion picture.
