Dario Fernandez-Morera - American Academia and the Survival of Marxist Ideas (1996).jpg

Fernandez-Morera provides a comprehensive critique of Marxist/"materialist" discourse as it pervades contemporary American scholarship. He examines the rhetorical and ideological underpinnings of the discourse, the socioeconomic circumstances and personality type of its academic practitioners, and its impact on other forms of academic speech. He also exposes the epistemological and ethical consequences of the discourse in light of the history of the 20th century and explains its remarkable success in the academic world. Being multidisciplinary, the book should challenge many and appeal to those interested in criticism, politics, epistemology, ethics, history, sociology, and even economics. Certainly all those interested in the condition of higher education will find it provocative.

Barnara Demick - Nothing to Envy, Ordinary Lives i n North Korea (2009).jpg

Starred Review. A fascinating and deeply personal look at the lives of six defectors from the repressive totalitarian regime of the Republic of North Korea, in which Demick, an L.A. Times staffer and former Seoul bureau chief, draws out details of daily life that would not otherwise be known to Western eyes because of the near-complete media censorship north of the arbitrary border drawn after Japan's surrender ending WWII. As she reveals, ordinary life in North Korea by the 1990s became a parade of horrors, where famine killed millions, manufacturing and trade virtually ceased, salaries went unpaid, medical care failed, and people became accustomed to stepping over dead bodies lying in the streets. Her terrifying depiction of North Korea from the night sky, where the entire area is blacked out from failure of the electrical grid, contrasts vividly with the propaganda on the ground below urging the country's worker-citizens to believe that they are the envy of the world.

George K. Tanham - Communist Revolutionary Warfare , From the Vietminh to the Viet Cong (2006).jpg

This volume in the Praeger Security International (PSI) series "Classics of the Counterinsurgency Era" was among the first major published analyses by an American expert on the insurgency in Indochina. In addition to tracing the Chinese influence on the Vietminh cadres and the French military response, the book describes the organization, logistics, and tactics of the communist movement. The author, George Tanham, managed the U.S. rural development program in South Vietnam and later served as special assistant for counterinsurgency at the U.S. Embassy in Thailand during the mid-1960s. With a new foreword by Richard A. Shultz Jr.

Mao Tse Tung - Mao's Road to Power, Revolutionary Writings 1912-1949 Vol. 1, The Pre-Marxist Period , 1912-1920 (1992).jpg

Communism - Mao Tse Tung - Maos Road to Power, Revolutionary Writi...2-1949 Vol. 1, The Pre-Marxist Period, 1912-1920 1992.jpg

Revolution in its Leninist guise has been a dominant force in the world for most of the 20th century, and the Chinese revolution has been, with the Russian revolution, one of its two most important manifestations. Mao Zedong, the architect of victory in China in 1949, stands out as one of the dominant figures of the century. Guerilla leader, strategist, conqueror, ruler, poet and philosopher, he placed his imprint on China, and on the world. Even though today communism is widely seen as bankrupt, Mao Zedong's achievements as an innovative disciple of Lenin and Stalin in the most populous nation on earth guarantees his place in history. Whatever the ultimate fate of communism in China, the fact of Mao's influence on events during more than five decades, and its resonance after his death, will remain. This edition of Mao Zedong's writings provides abundant documentation in his own words regarding his life and thought. It has been compiled from all available Chinese sources, including not only the 20-volume edition published in Tokyo years ago, but many new materials issued in China since 1978, both openly and for internal circulation. The editors have pursued a threefold goal: firstly, to translate every text by Mao which could be obtained, so as to make this English version as complete as possible; secondly, to annotate the materials in sufficient detail to make them accessible to the non-specialist reader; and thirdly, to combine accuracy with a level of literary quality which is intended to make the volumes agreeable as well as instructive to read. Volume 1 includes translations of the entire contents of the authoritative "Mao Zedong Zaoqi Wengao 1912.6-1920.11" ("Draft writings from Mao Zedong's early period, June 1912-November 1920"), published in Beijing in 1990, plus some 15 additional texts for the same period which have been attributed to Mao. Among the items thus made available in English are his first surviving work, a middle school essay of 1912 in praise of Shang Yang; his very extensive "Classroom Notes" of late 1913 on the lectures of his most influential teachers, Yang Changji and "Yuan the Big Beard"; a dozen letters to his then close friend Xiao Zisheng (Siao-yu), who described a shared odyssey in "Mao-Tse-tung and I were Beggars"; his marginal annotations of 1918 to the German philosopher Friedrich Paulsen's work on ethics, in which Mao proclaimed himself a believer in "individualism" and an admirer of Nietzsche; and many important letters, articles, and other writings documenting his evolution from liberalism to anarchism and finally to Marxism in 1919-1920.

Osprey - Elite 166 - Alejandro de Quesada - The Ba y of Pigs, Cuba 1961 (2009).jpg

The landings by the Cuban exile Assault Brigade 2506 at the Bay of Pigs on April 17, 1961 led to three days of savage but unequal combat. Before they even sailed for Cuba, a White House decision had condemned them to constant attacks by Castro’s air force, which sank two of their ships loaded with vital supplies and equipment. Despite stubborn resistance to Castro’s troops and tanks, and heroic sorties by Cuban and American B-26 pilots, the Brigade was strangled for lack of firepower and ammunition. Their story is illustrated with rare photos from Brigade veterans, and detailed color plates of the uniforms and insignia of both sides.

Osprey - Essential Histories 061 - Michael Lynch - The Chinese Civil War 1945-1949 (2010).jpg

Out of the ashes of Imperial China arose two new contenders to lead a reformed nation; the Chinese Nationalist Party, the Kuomintang, and the Chinese Communist Party. In 1927, the inevitable clash between these two political parties led to a bitter civil war that would last for 23 years, through World War II and into the Cold War period. The brutal struggle finally concluded when Communist forces captured Nanjing, capital of the Nationalist Republic of China, irrevocably altering the course of China’s future. Dr Michael Lynch sheds light on this cruel civil war that ultimately led to the establishment of the People’s Republic of China.

Communism - Charles Bettelheim - Cultural Revolution and Industria..., Changes in Management and the Division of Labor 1975.jpg

It is Charles Bettelheim's contention here that the primary aim of the Cultural Revolutino in China was to begin the process of transforming the age-old patern of the division of labor, thus opening up a new chapter in the history of the human race. He reports his own first-hand observations and inquiries at a Peking textile factory, showing the ways in which workers have been increasingly drawn into the tasks of management. He also examines the planning system at its federal, provincial, and local levels, concentrating on the extent and modes of popular participation.

Margaret Mead - Soviet Attitudes Toward Authority, An Interdisciplinary Approach to Problems of Sovi et Character (1961).jpg

Communism - Margaret Mead - Soviet Attitudes Toward Authority, An ...iplinary Approach to Problems of Soviet Character 1961.jpg

Margaret Mead (December 16, 1901 – November 15, 1978) was an American [[cultural anthropology|cultural anthropologist]], who was frequently a featured writer and speaker in the mass media throughout the 1960s and 1970s.

She was both a popularizer of the insights of anthropology into modern American and Western culture, and also a respected, if controversial, academic anthropologist. Her reports about the attitudes towards sex in South Pacific and Southeast Asian traditional cultures amply informed the 1960s sexual revolution. Mead was a champion of broadened sexual mores within a context of traditional western religious life.

An Anglican Christian, she played a considerable part in the drafting of the 1979 American Episcopal Book of Common Prayer.

She was a recognizable figure in academia, usually wearing a distinctive cape and carrying a tall, forked walking stick.

Stephen C. Averill - Revolution in the Highlands, China's Jinggangshan Base Area (2005).jpg

This extensively researched and elegantly written study offers a fine-grained analysis of the origins of the Chinese communist revolution in the countryside. Building on decades of research in newly available sources and multiple trips to Jiangxi, Stephen Averill provides a definitive local perspective on the rise of a revolution that reshaped China and the world. A rich work of social history, it goes beyond conventional Mao-centered narrative to explore the social cleavages that enabled the revolution to grow and dramatically influenced the structure of conflict within the party itself. Posthumously published with an introduction by Joseph W. Esherick and Elizabeth J. Perry, this book will stand as a memorial to the remarkable scholarship of a pioneer researcher on the social history of the Chinese revolution. Students and scholars interested in modern China and in the social origins of revolution will find it essential reading.

Yuri N. Maltsev - Requiem for Marx (1993).jpg

After the fall of communism, and certainly after this wide-ranging demolition of Marxism by Austrian scholars, who can possibly defend Marxism? Plenty of people, many of them smart otherwise but uneducated in economics. This book is the antidote, covering the whole history of this nutty and dangerous system of thought
It begins by an alternatively hilarious and tragic introduction by the editor Yuri Maltsev. He describes in vivid detail life in the Soviet Union, which, he points out contrary to myth, was indeed an attempt to realize Marx's vision. Of course the system moved away from the strict doctrine, lest everyone in the country be reduced to the most primitive possible economic conditions. He describes a society in which nothing works, ethics and morals collapse, and absurdities abound in every aspect of daily life. It is a priceless first-hand account.
Next come sweeping essays by David Gordon and Hans-Hermann Hoppe that get into the guts of the Marxian system and show where it went wrong from both a philosophical and economic perspective. Hoppe in particular here shows how Marx took classical liberal doctrine on the state and misapplied it in ways that contradicted all logic and experience.
Gary North provides a devastating look at Marx the man, while Ralph Raico zeros in on the Marxian doctrine of class. Finally, and as a triumphant finish, Rothbard offers a wholesale revision of the basis of Marxism. It was not economics, he says. It was the longing for a universal upheaval to overthrow all things we know about the world and replace it with a crazed fantasy based secular/religious longings. Rothbard finds all this in the unknown writings of Marx and his post-millennial predecessors in the history of ideas.
This book made its first appearance in 1992, and has been out of print all these years. It is fantastic to have it back and available in this very affordable edition.

The opening of the former Soviet Union to the West over the past three years has made accessible, for the first time, much new material on the Red Army of the Great Patriotic War - the huge and varied forces which won some of the greatest battles of World War II against the German invasion. This book contains a range of rare, authentic uniforms modelled and photographed in Moscow: tank commanders and generals, assault infantry and women medics, pilots and NKVD security officers, artillerymen, camouflaged scouts, and many more. The photographs are backed-up by close-ups of insignia and personal equipment.

Esther Kingston-Mann - Lenin and the Problem of Ma rxist Peasant Revolution (1983).jpg

As a Marxist, Lenin believed that peasants were petty bourgeois individuals and stubbornly denied the collective patterns of peasant political resistance. Yet at the same time, he embraced the peasant militance that so strongly contrasted with what he called the preference of liberal and radical intellectuals for 'a little drab, beggarly but peaceful legality'. This compelling account of Lenin's peasant strategy, which emerged out of decades of contradiction between Marxist dogma and the realities of Russian rural life, makes abundantly clear both the reasons for Lenin's success and the sources of future disaster.

The Soviet Union in World Politics provides an introductory history of Soviet foreign policy and international relations from 1945 to the end of the Cold War and the break up of the USSR. Geoffrey Roberts summarizes historical and political controversies about Soviet foreign policy and brings the most recent research to bear on these debates. The book examines the role of ideology in the Cold War and discusses Stalin's role in the formulation of policy. Using the latest evidence available from the Soviet archives, it offers an excellent framework for the exploration of relevant issues and a guide to further reading and research.

Isaiah Berlin - The Soviet Mind, Russian Culture U nder Communism (2004).jpg

The contents of this book were discussed at a seminar in Oxford in 2003, held under the auspices of the Brookings Institution.

Berlin's editor, Henry Hardy, had prepared the essays for collective publication and here recounts their history. In his foreword, Brookings president Strobe Talbott, an expert on the Soviet Union, relates the essays to Berlin's other work. The Soviet Mind will assume its rightful place among Berlin's works and will prove invaluable for policymakers, students, and those interested in Russian politics, past, present and future.
