George Michael urodził się 25 czerwca 1963 roku w Londynie jako Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou. Jego ojciec był Grekiem, a matka Angielką. Na początku lat 80. wspólnie z kolegą ze szkoły średniej Andrew Ridgeleyem założył Wham!. Zespół osiągnął wielki sukces, a wokalista stał się bożyszczem milionów nastolatek. Wtedy też, zgodnie z sugestią specjalistów od marketingu, zmienił nazwisko na George Michael. Latem 1984 roku George wydał solowy singiel "Careless Whisper", który okazał się jednym z muzycznych symboli lat osiemdziesiątych oraz jedną z najczęściej granych w radiu piosenek całej dekady. Utwór ten napisał, gdy miał ledwie 17 lat.

Kilka miesięcy później Michael i Ridgeley wspólnie zadecydowali, że Wham! powinno przestać istnieć, a George rozpoczął karierę solową.
