Born in Connecticut in 1969, David LaChapelle is a director and photographer, known for his vibrant, surreal, humorous and hyper-real style, who works largely in the fields of fashion, advertising and fine art photography. Having attended the New York City School of the Arts, he was given his first professional job by Andy Warhol, as a photographer for Interview magazine.
Since then, he has become a world-renowned photographer, whose subjects have included personalities as diverse as Andy Warhol, Hillary Clinton, Kate Moss, Courtney Love, Keith Richards, Elizabeth Taylor and Pamela Anderson, amongst many others, and has published four books of his photographs, three of which, LaChapelle Land and Hotel LaChapelle, LaChapelle Heaven to Hell form a trilogy of vivid and bizarre celebrity portraits.
Widely regarded as one of the ten best working photographers in the world, LaChapelle is an innovator whose unique approach to image making has been compared to that of Salvador Dali and Frederico Fellini. He is known for documenting popular culture with surreal images of reconstructed reality - but are his escapist fantasies really innocent fun? Are the celebrity portraits, art? This revealing documentary begins with a New York fashion shoot for Vogue featuring Grammy Award-winner Alicia Keyes, travels to Poitiers for another, followed by a Vanity Fair assignment with Elton John and the opening of a major exhibition of LaChapelle's work at Vienna's Kunsthaus Museum.
This is a unique collection of some of his most imaginative images and the stories behind them, as we follow him and his crew on a wild ride through some striking locations. A dynamic profile of a great photographer, this film also gives a glimpse into his own take on the fashions, glamour and style of the past 30 years.
