Opera can reveal something fundamental about a film, and film can do the same for an opera, argues Marcia J. Citron. Structured by the categories of Style, Subjectivity, and Desire, this volume advances our understanding of the aesthetics of the opera/film encounter. Case studies of a diverse array of important repertoire including mainstream film, opera-film, and postmodernist pastiche are presented. Citron uses Werner Wolf's theory of intermediality to probe the roles of opera and film when they combine. The book also refines and expands film-music functions, and details the impact of an opera's musical style on the meaning of a film. Drawing on cinematic traditions of Hollywood, France, and Britain, the study explores Coppola's Godfather trilogy, Jewison's Moonstruck, Nichols's Closer, Chabrol's La Cérémonie, Schlesinger's Sunday, Bloody Sunday, Boyd's Aria, and Ponnelle's opera-films.

This is a major revision of the 2001 edition by new editors Kranzler and Korsmeyer. The extensive appendix of addiction-treatment facilities that encompassed all of the second edition’s volume 4 is gone because of the more-comprehensive and constantly updated lists found online. Other appendixes that appeared in the second edition have been integrated into the entries, such as the list of drugs under government-control schedules. Out of a total of 545 entries, there are 133 new articles, and 236 others have been “substantially revised” for this edition. New articles include those on the views of addiction from other societies outside of the U.S. Extensive changes in the entries related to treatment of addictions mirror better medical understanding of the physical processes involved and the resulting changes to treatment since the last edition. One useful article provides difficult-to-find definitions for slang terms associated with drugs and drug culture. If you are thinking Devil’s dandruff is a medical condition or Special K is a breakfast cereal, check the slang entries to clarify what folks are talking about. Most entries are written to be easily understood, though some of the chemical and medical entries could have been simplified for better lay understanding, for example, the entry on Cannabinoids. See also references at the end of each entry are helpful but could have been more extensive. The entry for Cannabis sativa fails to link articles on India or Africa, where the topic is explored rather extensively. The thorough and expanded index does provide these links. Controversy in treatment and policy issues is addressed objectively. Discussions of 12-step models are as balanced as those on drug-substitution models. U.S. policy toward drugs is balanced by articles on other regions and countries to give the reader a view of how other cultures handle drugs and drug use in society.

Paul Johnson, whose previous works include the distinguished Modern Times and A History of the Jews, has produced an epic that spans the history of the American people over the past 400 years. The prolific narrative covers every aspect of U.S. history, from science, customs, religion, and politics to the individual men and women who have helped shape the nation. His detailed, provocative examinations of political and social icons, from Lyndon Johnson to Norman Rockwell, are especially strong. Johnson's text is intelligent and rich with detail, and yet extremely accessible for anyone interested in a reinterpretive analysis of America's past.

What makes this book unique is Johnson's approach to this self-professed Herculean task. The prevalent tone throughout is optimism. Whether he's discussing race relations, industrialization, the history of women, immigrants, Vietnam, or political correctness, Johnson--a staunch conservative who was born, bred, and educated in England--is openly enamored with America's past, particularly the hardships and tribulations that the nation has had to overcome. He sees this story as a series of important lessons, not just for Americans but for the whole of mankind as well. At a time when other contemporary scholars find it easier to bemoan the past, Johnson offers the reader "a compelling antidote to those who regard the future with pessimism."

From Library Journal
Johnson (Intellectuals, LJ 3/1/89; Modern Times, LJ 5/1/83) is used to tackling grand themes in his books, and this one is no exception. Even for the comparatively short period of American history, it is a daunting task. Still, Johnson does a good job of weaving together the story of American history. He takes more of a "social history" approach?including presentation of a background for each period and discussion of the various social issues involved in each. The author also uses quotations from personal diaries and other historical documents, providing a refreshing change from the usual "battle & general" technique in retelling the American story. Recommended for all persons interested in American history. Also useful as a college-level introductory text.?Mark Ellis, Albany State Univ., Ga.

Anti-Catholicism has a long history in America. And as Philip Jenkins argues in The New Anti-Catholicism, this virulent strain of hatred--once thought dead--is alive and well in our nation, but few people seem to notice, or care. A statement that is seen as racist, misogynistic, anti-Semitic, or homophobic can haunt a speaker for years, writes Jenkins, but it is still possible to make hostile and vituperative public statements about Roman Catholicism without fear of serious repercussions. Jenkins shines a light on anti-Catholic sentiment in American society and illuminates its causes, looking closely at gay and feminist anti-Catholicism, anti-Catholic rhetoric and imagery in the media, and the anti-Catholicism of the academic world. For newspapers and newsmagazines, for television news and in movies, for major book publishers, the Catholic Church has come to provide a grossly stereotyped public villain.

To become a good cook requires more than the blind following of a recipe. This is frequently illustrated when several women living in the same community, all using the same recipe, obtain widely differing results. It is the reason so many cooks say, "I had good luck with my cake to-day," or "I had bad luck with my bread yesterday." Happily, luck causes neither the success nor the failure of a product. To become a good cook means to gain a knowledge of foods and how they behave, and skill in manipulating them. The recipe by itself, helpful as it is, will not produce a good product; the human being using the recipe must interpret it and must have skill in handling the materials it prescribes.

this book is fantastic, it have a lot of recipes and all of they are very tasty.

Powers (The Man Who Kept the Secrets) details the rise and untimely fall of the Lakota's most famous warrior in this richly detailed, sensitive, and evenhanded portrayal. Little known before his stunning surprise victory over Custer's 7th Infantry at Little Bighorn, Crazy Horse (ca. 1840–1877) became the strongest opponent of white incursion on Indian land in the Black Hills, revered for his strategic brilliance and bravery. Opposed to any concessions that would remove his people from their land, Crazy Horse terrified the American military as well as those Indian leaders who considered cooperating with the U.S. government's demands. Drawing on firsthand accounts by soldiers and officers, settlers and Lakota, the author assembles a savvy analysis of the conflicting interests and worldviews at play, highlighting the cultural and political misunderstandings that led to the (most likely) accidental slaying of the Lakota leader as he surrendered to U.S. forces at Camp Robinson. Numerous conflicting versions of what happened in Crazy Horse's final minutes are handled with aplomb by the author, as is the warrior's shifting legacy in the decades after his death.

PREFACE

Globalisation, privatisation and li!>eralisation have become
dominant forces shaping societies and economies the world over.
With the fall of communism and the decline of socialism in most parts
of the world. These three processes are interrelated phenomena.
Globalised economies are likely to be more privatized and liberalised
economies. Globalisation, privatisation and liberalisation are
multidimensional phenomena that have implications not only for the
economic but also the sociocultural and environmental aspects of
countries and societies.
The three phenomena that form the focus of this volume also
have differing impacts on different units of analysis. For purposes of
understanding and analysing these three forces, the units of analysis
can be conceived at regional, country, industry and organizational
levels. The chapters in this book deal with all of these, reflecting the
multilevel aspects of globalisation, privatisation and liberalisation
forces shaping world economies.
One of the major consequences of globalisation, privatisation and
liberalisation is the acceleration in foreign direct investment flows.
While foreign direct investment has been increasing for some time
among the developed triad countries, in recent years it has spread to
other parts of the world, especially to the giant emerging economies.
The privatisation and liberalization policies pursued by these
emerging economies have created new opportunities for foreign direct
investment International investors now face difficult problems such
as choosing countries, evaluating risk-return relationships and
assessing profitability in private and public sectors.
The Market is about economy. The Market is not what people do
and think and how they interact when they buy and sell, give and

take. Instead, it is a conception people have about an idealised form of
buying and selling. This conception is important. It is invoked,
implicitly or explicitly. It is invoked when the British debate selling
state-owned industries or the Common Market or labour legislation.
These debates concern many issues and reflect many interests.
However, running through them, on one side or another, is a claim
and a belief that a certain sort of buying and selling benefits all those
involved economically, politically, socially and even morally. And
that that is the sort of buying and selling associated with the Free
Market The idea of the Market has many roots, butits most important
historical ones are lodged in British soil, in the writings of political
economists However, in popular consciousness the idea flourishes
best in the United States, with its long traditions of that secular,
acquisitive individualism and concern with equality of process rather
than of outcome that form part of the Market.
I have consulted various authors and derived much from their
thinking and thoughts. I am grateful to them and record my thanks.
Also, I ~thank my family for extending wholehearted support during
the compilation of this book. And finally, my thanks are due to
Aavishkar Publishers, Distributors for bringing out this book in a
pleasing and attractive manner.

In this volume the results of the excavations of a settlement discovered by Helge Ingstad in 1960 on the northern point of Newfoundland are presented together with an archaeological assessment of the finds, which comprise house-sites and other archaeological material. The site is located at Epaves Bay, near the little fishing settlement of L'Anse aux Meadows. During the period 1961-1968, Helge Ingstad organized seven archaeologi-cal expeditions, in the course of which these house-sites were excavated. The scholars participating in these expeditions formed international teams, and their names are listed in Helge Ingstad's foreword to this book; I would use this opportunity to thank each and every one of them not only for excellent work done, but also for the atmosphere of friendship which obtained during our life and work at these expeditions. Some of them have contributed to this volume, and valuable scientif,rc contributions from other scholars are also included

The global airline industry, facing significant changes and discontinuity is prompted and forced to deal with a 'new normal'. Who would have imagined a few years ago that: a significant percentage of consumers in the US now prefer to fly low-cost airlines instead of full-service airlines because they perceive the product to be better, airlines would generate up to a third of their total income from non-ticket revenue, many low-cost airlines would add complexity to their original simple business models through the development of code-share agreements, the use of global distribution systems, and travel agents to distribute their seats, or Jetstar, a low-cost subsidiary of Qantas, would grow faster and be more profitable than its parent. Who would have also imagined a few years ago that: a survey carried out by Ryanair would show that 42 per cent of passengers would be willing to stand on short (one hour) flights if they could pay 50 per cent less than seated passengers, passengers could pay as little as US$2,000 for a transatlantic Business Class ticket on top-brand airlines, Lufthansa would have ownership in airlines based in Austria, Belgium, Italy, Switzerland, Turkey, the UK, and the US, and that it would continue to pursue equity ownership in airlines based in Poland and Scandinavia, or the Japanese and Canadian governments would struggle to find different ways to bail out their heretofore flag carriers? To deal with this upcoming 'new normal', airlines have to go beyond their short-term circumstantial strategies - they need strategic renewal of their ageing business model. In this candidly-written book, Nawal Taneja explains what will separate the winners from the losers. He maintains the leaders will be the airlines that: exploit this crisis-driven change to their best advantage, learn to work around the airline-inherent constraints that prevent them from running their businesses just like other businesses, learn from successes and failures of other global enterprises, sharpen their business intelligence, analytics, and strategic agility, and proactively explore the 'pockets of growth' in this emerging-markets century. To help airline executives become informed of new competitive games, the author analyzes numerous business sectors such as auto, hospitality, retail, technology, and entertainment. For example, relevant lessons can be learned from the strategic mistakes made by the US automakers. Likewise, emergent and compelling insights can be gained in superior customer experience from Ritz Carlton and Zappos, and in value-creating innovation from Cirque du Soleil and Zipcar. The book also features a multitude of forewords from airlines and related businesses to provide readers with multiple perspectives on the changing landscape in the global airline industry. Nawal Taneja is a career analyst of the global airline industry with wide-ranging experience in the aviation industry, academia, and public policy. Encouraged by industry executives, he has written five other books for practitioners in the global airline industry, including "Fasten Your Seatbelt: The Passenger is Flying the Plane" and "Flying Ahead of the Airplane".

Custer and the Indian Wars 1867-1880: This catalog contains the largest groups of historic Custer guns ever offered for sale. These are exactly the type guns that Custer and his men rode to their destiny with during the Battle of Little Big Horn in Montana on June 25th 1876, when General Custer led his famous 7th Cavalry against the overwhelming Sioux and Cheyenne Indians who were led by Chief Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse. The 7th Cavalry were stationed at Fort Abraham Lincoln, near Bismarck, Dakota and had recently been re-armed with these new, Springfield model 1873 Trapdoor carbines .45/55 caliber. The 7th Cavalry’s report to the War Department, just 3 months before the famous battle, lists 629 Springfield .45 caliber Trapdoor carbines for the 9 companies that formed Custer’s 7th Cavalry regiment. Custer rode into the fight on June 25, 1876 commanding companies C, E, F, I & L and lost his entire command, as well as, all their weapons were captured by the Indians.

The War of 1812 was the true making of the regular regiments and corps of the US Army. Three years' fighting against Britain saw the White House burned down, but also the bloody repulse of the redcoats, then the best infantry in the world, on a number of battlefields. The small constabulary force which entered the war - ill-led, ill-supported, and with an uncertain system of supply - ended it as a professional army with a system of command and services equal to any. This meticulous history of the uniforms of the American regulars is illustrated with many previously unseen paintings and photographs.

`A splendid analysis of how an automotive industry based on mass production has become an alien in our time - where diversity and personalised products and services have become the norm. Peter Wells presents an intriguing analysis of how the automotive industry can find ways forward and re-invent itself. A must read for all interested in sustainable mobility, as well as strategists in the automotive industry.'
- Arnold Tukker, TNO Built Environment and Geosciences, The Netherlands

`The Automotive Industry in an Era of Eco-Austerity examines how we can achieve sustainable personal mobility, using a wide range of ideas and concepts. As the author stresses, this is not about the search for the best single technology for developing a sustainable car - it is much wider than that. Rather this book is about the fact that fundamental change is needed. Anyone interested in the auto industry should read it - much recommended.'
- David Bailey, Coventry University, UK

`What the global automotive industry needs right now is ideas and this book is packed with them. Dr Wells is a master of turning a topic on its head in order to approach it from an angle that is both unique and enlightening. This book should be required reading for decision makers within the automakers, suppliers and governments, whose job it will be to shape the auto industry of tomorrow.'
- Gareth Owen Davies, AutomotiveWorld.com

The Automotive Industry in an Era of Eco-Austerity analyses the future prospects of the largest manufacturing sector in the world, the automotive industry, at a time of unprecedented global financial crisis and unrelenting environmental pressure.

This unique book seeks to combine economic analysis with the environmental research to arrive at a comprehensive understanding of the forces that shape change in the automotive industry. It eschews the usual focus on technologies, and gives more attention to the impact of change on the business models and strategies adopted by the vehicle manufacturers, the scope for new entrants, and the implications for policy-makers. This richly textured book concludes that the achievement of a sustainable automotive industry will not be possible with `one best way', but that myriad technologies and business concepts, grounded in the distinct needs of different places and consumers, will be the basis of the future of mobility.

Drawing on a wealth of industry data by virtue of the authors' record of many years researching the industry, this book will be invaluable to both students and researchers working within transport, industrial ecology, automobility, industrial policy, economics, regional development, sustainability, technology, and business models.

Since the 1950s, the International Joint Commission (IJC) of Canada and the United States has issued water regulation and management plans for Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River. Changes in recreational, environmental, navigational and other uses of the water system have prompted the IJC to consider replacing the current water regulation plan in operation for more than 40 years. IJC's goals for a replacement plan include sound scientific foundations, public participation, transparency in plan development and evaluation, and inclusion of environmental considerations. To help develop and select the new plan, the IJC supported a 5-year, $20 million Lake Ontario-St. Lawrence River Study (LOSLR Study). The LOSLR Study uses models to compile and integrate data gathered from a series of commissioned studies of wetlands, species at risk, recreational boating, fisheries, coastal erosion and flooding, commercial navigation, hydropower, industrial, municipal and domestic water intakes, public information and education, and hydrologic modeling.

The United States remains a deeply religious country and religion plays an inextricably critical role in American politics. Controversy over issues such as abortion is fueled by opposition in the Catholic Church and among conservative Protestants, candidates for the presidency are questioned about their religious beliefs, and the separation of church and state remains hotly contested. While the examination of religion's influence in politics has long been neglected, in the last decade the subject has finally garnered the attention it deserves. In Religion and Democracy in the United States, prominent scholars consider the ways Americans understand the relationship between their religious beliefs and the political arena.

This collection, a work of the Task Force on Religion and American Democracy of the American Political Science Association, thoughtfully explores the effects of religion on democracy and contemporary partisan politics. Topics include how religious diversity affects American democracy, how religion is implicated in America's partisan battles, and how religion affects ideas about race, ethnicity, and gender. Surveying what we currently know about religion and American politics, the essays introduce and delve into the range of current issues for both specialists and nonspecialists.

In addition to the editors, the contributors are Allison Calhoun-Brown, Rosa DeLauro, Bette Novit Evans, James Gibson, John Green, Frederick Harris, Amaney Jamal, Geoffrey Layman, David Leal, David Leege, Nancy Rosenblum, Kenneth Wald, and Clyde Wilcox.

Mormonism is one of the world's fastest growing religions, doubling its membership every 15 years. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the formal denomination of the Mormon church) is now 10 million strong, with more than half of its membership coming from outside the United States. More than 88 million copies of The Book of Mormon have been printed, and it has been translated into more than 50 languages. Mormons in America tells the tumultuous story of this religious group, from its humble origins in small-town New York State in 1830 to its present heyday. Claudia and Richard Bushman introduce us to charismatic leaders like Joseph Smith and Brigham Young, go deep behind Mormon rites and traditions, take us along the adventurous trail of the Mormon pioneers into the West, evoke the momentous erection of Salt Lake City in the desert, and draw us into the dozens of skirmishes, verbal attacks, and court battles between Mormons and their neighbors, other religions, the media, and the American government.

General editors: Jon Butler and Harry S. Stout, Yale University

A landmark examination of Christianity's place in American life across the broad sweep of this country's history, from the Puritans to the presidential administration of George W. Bush.
The struggle within American Christianity, Garry Wills argues, now and throughout our country's history, is between the head and the heart: between reason and emotion, Enlightenment and Evangelism. Why has this been so? How has the tension between the two poles played out, and with what consequences, over the past 400 years? How "Christian" is America, after all? Garry Wills brings a lifetime's worth of thought about these questions to bear on a magnificent historical reckoning that offers much needed perspective on some of the most contentious issues of our time.
A religious revolution occurred in America in the 18th century, one that saw the emergence of an Enlightenment religious culture whose hallmarks were tolerance for other faiths and a belief that religion was a matter best divorced from political institutions-the proverbial "separation of church and state." Wills shows us just how incredibly radical a departure this separation was: there was simply no precedent for it. To put this leap in perspective, Wills provides a grounding in the pre-Enlightenment religion that preceded it, beginning with the early Puritans. He then provides a thrillingly clear unpacking of the steps, particularly Madison's and Jefferson's, by which church-state separation was enshrined in the Constitution, and reveals the great irony of the efforts of today's Religious Right to blur the lines between the two. In fact, it is precisely that separation that has allowed religion in America to flourish since the disestablishment of religion created a free market, as it were, and competition for souls led to the profusion of denominations across the length and breadth of the land.
As Wills examines the key movements and personalities that have transformed America's religious landscape, we see again and again the same pattern emerge: a cooling of popular religious fervor followed by a grassroots explosion in evangelical activity, generally at a time of great social transformation and anxiety. But such forces inevitably go too far, provoking a backlash as is happening right now with the forces of Creationism and the anti-abortion fundamentalists.
Garry Wills closes with a penetrating dissection of the Religious Right's current machinations and the threat they pose to the enlightened religion that has proved to be such a fertile and enduring force throughout American history. But in the end, Wills's abiding message is to be vigilant against the triumph of emotions over reason, but to know that the tension between the two is in fact necessary, inevitable, and unending.
