This title demonstrates the economic and political foundations of American universities and their growing impact abroad.Advocates of higher education have long contended that universities should operate above the crude material negotiations of economics and politics. Such arguments ignore the historical reality that the American university system emerged through, and in service to, a capitalist political economy that unevenly combines corporate, state, and civil interests.As the corporatization of U.S. universities becomes nearly impossible to deny, the common response from many academics has been a superior stand against the contamination of the professional ideal by tainted corporate interests. "Inside the Teaching Machine" proposes a correction to this view through the lens of historical materialism.Chaput argues that the U.S. public research university has always been a vital component of the capitalist political economy. While conventional narratives of public higher education emphasize civic preparation and upward mobility, Chaput demonstrates that supposedly egalitarian policies like the Morrill Land-Grant Act and the G.I. Bill served the changing interests of capitalism as much as those of education, creating a professional class that supports the capitalist political economy.Chaput also focuses on the relationship between American universities and globalization, showing how the trend toward professionalization contributes to the production of surplus value and the ways that the American university model circulates outside the United States. Chaput concludes by advocating rhetorical strategies for the professional who opposes the capitalist logic of the global university system, proposing concrete options for engaging and redirecting globalization within the university system.

Hercules. Herk. Herky-Bird. Four-Engined Fighter. Whatever its popular name, Lockheed's C-130 remains the world's premier tactical airlifter more than four decades after its first flight. Conceived in the depths of the Cold War, the Hercules has hauled troops, vehicles, cargo, and refugees in several major wars, numerous interventions, and countless relief and humanitarian missions. There have also been a dizzying array of special purpose models, filling such diverse roles as airborne early warning, weather reconnaissance, side-firing gunship, electronic and photographic intelligence, arctic resupply, search and rescue, and aerial refueling tanker.
The genesis of the C-130 program dates back to the 194()s. World War II saw the first extensive use of tactical airlift, and by the end of the war the concept of moving troops into battlefield areas by air had been proven. The USAAF fought the war
equipped for the most part with Curtiss C-46 Commandos and Douglas C-47s, and both types proved to be workhorses. But these aircraft were basically adapted airliners, and what was needed was a purpose-designed type able to carry both men and large military items such as vehicles to the front.
During the war. successful use was made of gliders for transporting vehicles and heavy equipment during airborne operations. However, the advantages of a powered aircraft that could land, disgorge its cargo, and take off again under its own power were obvious, and there were several attempts to turn gliders into powered transports; Messersehmitt created the six-engined Me323 Gigant heavy transport from the equally large Me321, and after the war the U.S. experimental XCG-20 assault glider formed the basis for the C-123B Provider. And in the UK, a late version of the General Aircraft Hamilcar heavy glider was fitted with a pair of Mercury engines, and the basic design helped form the starting point for the later Bristol 170.

The war in Vietnam was often a sludy in contrasts. No better illustration of this can be found than in the role played by the United States Navy. In the Tonkin Gulf naval aviators, flying supersonic jets off the decks of huge super carriers, participated in the aerial campaign against North Vietnam, while cruisers and the Battleship New Jersey bombarded enemy coastal areas. Further south, a vast array of small craft, few of which were ocean going, carried out a variety of tasks along the coast and up the various rivers and canals which dissected this war torn land. And w hile much has been written about the aerial and bombardment campaign, little has been written about these small craft in the war. Yet in terms of men, ships, action, and heroism this little known aspect of the Navy's war in Vietnam deserves equal treatment with the more glamorous big-ship operations that caught the public's attention through newspaper reports and television. The sailors who manned these small fragile boats and often fought pitched battles with the Viet Con% (VC) and North Vietnamese Army (NVA) at small arms range and on occasion even had to repel boarders! The kind of warfare that was waged on the inland and coastal waters of Vietnam was last practiced by the United States Navy during the Civil War, almost exactly one-hundred years earlier. As a result much of the tactics were based on the earlier experiences of the French Union Forces, or were developed through trial and error. Mistakes were made, as was to be expected, but in the end the resourceful individual sailors of these varied forces learned their lessons well and were forged into formidable fighting forces which deprived the enemy (he use of these waterways.
In RIVERINE, I have tried to present a broad outline of the operations by the Brown Water Navy, as these forces came to be known, from their inception to the withdrawal of US Forces from Vietnam. The scope of this book covers the three major components of the Navy's riverine force and their subsidiary units. Each had its own distinct function but also worked in conjunction with the other two components when the situation dictated. Task force 115 (Market Time), had the responsibility for coastal patrol, surveillance, and interception of enemy gun runners on the high seas. Using equipment that ranged from Patrol aircraft such as the Neptune and Orion to small Swift Boats, which even included US Coast Guard cutters. Market Time carried out the usually monotonous duty of interdicting communist supplies along the coast of Vietnam. Task Force 116 (Game Warden), carried the war as far up the rivers and canals of Vietnam as their shallow draft boats would go. Using various modified landing craft, armored power boats, helicopters and even fixed wiog Broncos, they eventually swept the Viet Cong from the Mekong Delta.
