In recent years the American media have portrayed the evangelical movement as a conservative force in society equating it with fundamentalism. Many people equate evangelical Christianity with conservatism in religion, politics, theology and social attitudes. But is this the whole story of evangelicalism? Roger Olson’s new book sets forth evidence that the link between evangelicalism and conservatism has not always been as strong as it is today in the popular mind. Olson shows how contemporary evangelicals—who want to remainevangelical—can do so without identifying with conservatism in every way..

What if something as seemingly academic as the so-called science wars were to determine how we live?

This eye-opening book reveals how little we've understood about the ongoing pitched battles between the sciences and the humanities--and how much may be at stake. James Brown's starting point is C. P. Snow's famous book, Two Cultures and the Scientific Revolution, which set the terms for the current debates. But that little book did much more than identify two new, opposing cultures, Brown contends: It also claimed that scientists are better qualified than nonscientists to solve political and social problems. In short, the true significance of Snow's treatise was its focus on the question of who should rule--a question that remains vexing, pressing, and politically explosive today.

In Who Rules in Science? Brown takes us through the various engagements in the science wars--from the infamous "Sokal affair" to angry confrontations over the nature of evidence, the possibility of objectivity, and the methods of science--to show how the contested terrain may be science, but the prize is political: Whoever wins the science wars will have an unprecedented influence on how we are governed.

Brown provides the most comprehensive and balanced assessment yet of the science wars. He separates the good arguments from the bad, and exposes the underlying message: Science and social justice are inextricably linked. His book is essential reading if we are to understand the forces making and remaking our world.

Read the experiences of the men and women who served in a horrific war, across the sea-the "Great War." Relying extensively on letters, diaries, and reminiscences of those Americans who fought or served in World War I, Jennifer Keene reports on training and camp requirements for enlistees and recruits; the details of the transport across the ocean of sailors, soldiers, and others being carried "Over There;" and the experiences of African Americans, women, Native Americans and immigrants in "The White Man's Army." She also describes in vivid detail, "The Sailor's War," and for those on the ground in France and Belgium, the events of static trench warfare, and movement combat. Chapters describe coping with and treating disease and wounds; the devastating amount of death; and for those who came home, the veterans' difficult entrances back into civilian life. A timeline, extensive bibliography or recommended sources, and illustrations add to the usefulness of the volume.

After years of lying in wait, the WWII story sprang back into action last year, with movies like Saving Private Ryan and books like Tom Brokaw's The Greatest Generation. But as many stories as have been told so far, there are an almost infinite number more to tell, which Astor's book seeks to do. Astor, author of The Right to Fight and numerous other works of military and social history, has patched together countless firsthand accounts of many of the battles in which Americans fought during WWII. Thus, one is introduced to Pearl Harbor through the account of one soldier whose first thought was that the Japanese planes were actually American and that the pilots were going to get into a lot of trouble for bombing a hangar; another account quite convincingly conveys another man's experience surviving the downing of his plane and interrogation in a German prison camp. But at a broader level, the book suffers from a fundamental lack of focus. On battles that remain less in the public eye, Astor's results are fascinating--his account of the attack on Salerno, in particular--but the reports are too brief to do anything but tantalize. And as interesting as the first-person accounts are, their broad outlines are likely to be familiar to WWII buffs. Astor's deep knowledge and the amazing experiences of his subjects come through clearly, however, as he drives home that this was a time when particularly remarkable people had particularly remarkable experiences.

Long before World War 2 ended, most of the major military powers were heavily involved m the research and development of jet-propelled aircraft. The Germans held a distinct advantage in this area over the United States and Great Britain, with Messerschmitt's Me 262 twin-engined fighter being easily the best jet-powered aircraft to see operational service during the conflict.
Both sides in that war realised that speed was not only life, but that it also meant power and victory. In the United States, most of the major aircraft manufacturers had jet-powered prototypes in the making, including Lockheed. Bell. North American and Republic.
By the time the latter company's effort in the shape of the XP-84 had flown in February 1946. the war had been over for almost six months. Nevertheless, the Army Air Force (AAF) still expressed a keen interest in the airframe. Republic lagged quite some distance behind both Bell and Lockheed, whose designs the P-59 Airacomet and P-80 Shooting Star respectively had already entered production. Indeed, the latter aircraft would go on to become the first truly successful frontline American jet fighter, and its service in Korea will be examined m detail m a later volume within this series.
The Shooting Star was a fighter interceptor which could trace its ancestry back to Lockheed's war-winning P-38 Lightning. And although capable of carrying up to 2000 lbs of bombs or rockets, it was hardly the tactical 'bomb truck' that the AAF felt it would need for any future conflict. This was where Republic came in. for the Long Island-based company had firmly established itself during World War 2 as the primary source of land-based close air support aircraft for the AAF. building no less than 15.683 P-47 Thunderbolts.

Between the two world wars, shipbuilding as a whole was a dormant factor in the Canadian economy and in September 1939, Canada's merchant navy consisted of less than 400 ships of 500 gross tons and over, totalling about 1,100,000 gross tons. Of this total some 260 ships of 700,000 tons were operating in the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence area, sixty coasters of 150,000 tons sailed in the coastal routes, and only 40 ships of about 250,000 gross tons could be classified as ocean-going vessels.
In this year also, Canada's shipbuilding facilities were at a low ebb for only about 2,000 skilled men, shared between about ten shipyards, were immediately available and they were put to work on naval construction, the hastily organised War Supply Board controlling, among other things, the building of ships. This arrangement lasted until 1940 when the board was superseded by the Department of Munitions and Supply.
In the autumn of 1940 the British Merchant Shipbuilding Mission arrived in North America and following a tour of a number of shipbuilding and engineering works, involving travel of many thousands of miles, orders were placed and contracts signed for sixty 10,000-ton deadweight dry cargo ships to be built in two United States' yards and for twenty ships in Canadian yards. This latter order was shortly afterwards increased to 26 ships, shared between Burrard Dry Dock Co., Ltd. of Vancouver, Davie Shipbuilding & Repairing Co., Ltd., of Lauzon, Quebec and Canadian Vickers, Montreal. This latter company also received orders for propelling machinery and boilers, whilst other orders for engines were placed with Dominion Engineering Workshops, Montreal, and further boilers ordered from Dominion Bridge Company, Vancouver.
At the same time the Canadian Government also placed orders for merchant hulls. The first keel was laid down in April 1941 and this was the start of the mammoth task done by Canadian shipbuilders during the war involving, not only the construction of some 450 merchant vessels but also some 300 naval ships. Also in April 1941 a Government corporation known as Wartime Merchant Shipping Ltd., was formed to supervise, co-ordinate, expand and expedite construction of merchant ships. The burden was enormous. Shipyards were built, extended, or had their capacity increased for building the 10,000-tonncrs, but where yards were too small, the 4,700 tdw. ship was laid down and these two types dominated the Canadian merchant shipbuilding programme during the war years.

It is the purpose of The Civil War Handbook to present this unusual story of the Civil Warm a mosaic composed of fragments from the lesser-known and yet colorful facts that have survived a century but have been obscured by the voluminous battle narratives and campaign studies.
Much of this material, when originally drafted, was selected by the National Civil War Centennial Commission for their informative and interesting Facts About the Civil War. This original material, revised and enlarged, has grown into The Civil War Handbook.
The handbook is divided into five basic parts. The first is a presentation of little-known and unusual facts about participants, battles and losses, and the cost of war. The second is a graphic portrayal of both the men and machines that made the war of the 1860's. The special selection of photographs for this portion of the story were made available through the courtesy of the National Archives and the Library of Congress. Next are reproductions in color of Union and Confederate uniforms from the Official Records Atlas and the famous paintings by H. A. Ogden. The fourth section is a reference table of ...

This book not only retraces the wealth of insignia within the US Army during the Second World War, but also pays homage to the great courage of those who wore such signs of recognition. This work by Philippe Trombetta fills a gap in the study of the insignia in the US Army and will surely be a useful guide for World War II history enthusiasts and collectors alike.

In a world dominated by neo-liberal globalization, Cuba stands apart as a tiny enclave of resistance to the free market economy. Its success -- in the face of massive opposition from the US and the apparent triumph of neoliberalism worlwide -- is remarkable. This book offers a comprehensive analysis of the ways in which the government and the people of Cuba have actively resisted neo-liberal globalisation. The author challenges those on the Left who romantically support the Cuban Revolution as well as those who claim that the free market is the ideal economic model for all states. Instead, he presents an intelligent account of the serious and contradictory consequences of Cuba's social, political and economic restructuring. How is it that the Cuban Communist Party continues to exist? To what extent is Cuba affected by global trends and pressures? The author revisits the history of the Cuban Revolution, and the crisis after the fall of Cuba's superpower ally, the Soviet Union, to provide answers to these questions.

Using recently released archival materials from the United States and Europe, Replacing France: The Origins of American Intervention in Vietnam explains how and why the United States came to assume control as the dominant western power in Vietnam during the 1950s. Acting on their conviction that American methods had a better chance of building a stable, noncommunist South Vietnamese nation, Eisenhower administration officials systematically ejected French military, economic, political, bureaucratic, and cultural institutions from Vietnam. Kathryn C. Statler examines diplomatic maneuvers in Paris, Washington, London, and Saigon to detail how Western alliance members sought to transform South Vietnam into a modern, westernized, and democratic ally but ultimately failed to counter the Communist threat. Abetted by South Vietnamese prime minister Ngo Dinh Diem, Americans in Washington, D.C., and Saigon undermined their French counterparts at every turn, resulting in the disappearance of a French presence by the time Kennedy assumed office. Although the United States ultimately replaced France in South Vietnam, efforts to build South Vietnam into a nation failed. Instead, it became a dependent client state that was unable to withstand increasing Communist aggression from the North. Replacing France is a fundamental reassessment of the origins of U.S. involvement in Vietnam that explains how Franco-American conflict led the United States to pursue a unilateral and ultimately imperialist policy in Vietnam.

In recent years, the growth of the federal government and its failure to resolve many major problems have ignited a serious new debate. Some scholars and policymakers suggest that reinvigorating American federalism—returing a variety of regulatory and police powers back to the states—may better solve many of these problems. Others claim that it will gut policies or cripple national regulation. This book confronts these issues as it investigates the central question of the new American federalism: Will it yield better government, in doing so it poses the provocative question, Can the states be trusted? Proponents of greater federalism argue that it creates competition and fosters the "laboratory of the states." Opponents claim that decentralizing power to the states will lead to a "race to the bottom." The contributors to the volume examine the current state of knowledge and evidence about both sides of the argument and offer

A historical and constitutional perspective that raises important questions for the contemporary debate
The main lessons of modern economics applicable to the new federalism
Evidence on interstate competition in three important policy domains: welfare, the environment, and corporate law
An outline of the relative merits of a statutory versus a constitutional basis for the new federalism
The authors of the The New Federalism: Can the State be Trusted? conclude that the answer is a qualified yes. The studies in this volume find little evidence for a race to the bottom in three major policy domains. This book should be an invaluable resource to federal and state policymakers alike.

In 1934 the republic of Haiti celebrated its 130th anniversary as an independent nation. In that year, too, another sort of Haitian independence occurred, as the United States ended nearly two decades of occupation. In the first comprehensive political history of postoccupation Haiti, Matthew Smith argues that the period from 1934 until the rise of dictator Francois "Papa Doc" Duvalier to the presidency in 1957 constituted modern Haiti's greatest moment of political promise.
Smith emphasizes the key role that radical groups, particularly Marxists and black nationalists, played in shaping contemporary Haitian history. These movements transformed Haiti's political culture, widened political discourse, and presented several ideological alternatives for the nation's future. They were doomed, however, by a combination of intense internal rivalries, pressures from both state authorities and the traditional elite class, and the harsh climate of U.S. anticommunism. Ultimately, the political activism of the era failed to set Haiti firmly on the path to a strong independent future.

Newman traces the abolition movement's transformation from the American Revolution to 1830, showing how what began in late-18th-century Pennsylvania as an elite movement espousing gradual legal reform had by the 1830s become a radical, egalitarian mass movement based in Massachusetts.

As this book is intended as a complimentary volume to the already published work American Civil War Infantry, many basic details dealt with in the earlier book are not repeated here, more attention being paid to variations and information peculiar to Cavalry. Thus the reader will often be referred to the Infantry book for further details. In addition to the Cavalry, North and South, information on the Indian units raised by both sides is included. The various early machine-guns employed are also covered. This book is not intended as a guide to the strategy and tactics of the war, nor a military history of its course; it is purely a handbook of information about the men involved, what they wore and the equipment they fought with. The details given concentrate on those which will be of use to the modeller and wargamer and therefore those wishing for more information on the causes and courses of the war are refered to the bibliography at the back of the book. The Southern mounted troops started the war better equipped, with more skill and horses and higher morale than their counterpart in the North. The South was a natural rider's country, and the Rebel cavalry ran rings around the poorly equipped, trained and mounted Federals. However, as the war progressed so the training improved in the North and equipment and horses were replaced. In the South whilst the soldiers may also have improved with experience his equipment and horses were not so easily replaced. Thus slowly the Federal cavalry began to gain the upper hand, eventually reaching a marked superiority over the Southern horsemen. I should like once again to thank my good friend John Robertson of Dundee for his apparently inexhaustable fund of information; Mick Bowling for access to his collection for reference and illustrations, and for his encouragement and advice; and to my wife Paul for her patience.

Generally regarded as the most important of the Civil War campaigns conducted in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, that of 1864 lasted more than four months and claimed more than 25,000 casualties. The armies of Philip H. Sheridan and Jubal A. Early contended for immense stakes. Beyond the agricultural bounty and the boost in morale a victory would bring, events in the Valley also would affect Abraham Lincoln's chances for reelection in the November 1864 presidential canvass. The eleven original essays in this volume reexamine common assumptions about the campaign, its major figures, and its significance. Taking advantage of the most recent scholarship and a wide range of primary sources, contributors examine strategy and tactics, the performances of key commanders on each side, the campaign's political repercussions, and the experiences of civilians caught in the path of the armies. The authors do not always agree with one another, yet, taken together, their essays highlight important connections between the home front and the battlefield, as well as ways in which military affairs, civilian experiences, and politics played off one another during the campaign.
