Here is the most comprehensive and authoritative work to date on relationships between the economy and politics in the years from Eisenhower through Reagan. Extending and deepening his earlier work, which had major impact in both political science and economics, Hibbs traces the patterns in and sources of postwar growth, unemployment, and inflation. He identifies which groups "win" and "lose" from inflations and recessions. He also shows how voters' perceptions and reactions to economic events affect the electoral fortunes of political parties and presidents.
Hibbs's analyses demonstrate that political officials in a democratic society ignore the economic interests and demands of their constituents at their peril, because episodes of prosperity and austerity frequently have critical influence on voters' behavior at the polls. The consequences of Eisenhower's last recession, of Ford's unwillingness to stimulate the economy, of Carter's stalled recovery were electorally fatal, whereas Johnson's, Nixon's, and Reagan's successes in presiding over rising employment and real incomes helped win elections.
The book develops a major theory of macroeconomic policy action that explains why priority is given to growth, unemployment, inflation, and income distribution shifts with changes in partisan control of the White House. The analysis shows how such policy priorities conform to the underlying economic interests and preferences of the governing party's core political supporters. Throughout the study Hibbs is careful to take account of domestic institutional arrangements and international economic events that constrain domestic policy effectiveness and influence domestic economic outcomes.
Hibbs's interdisciplinary approach yields more rigorous and more persuasive characterizations of the American political economy than either purely economic, apolitical analyses or purely partisan, politicized accounts. His book provides a useful benchmark for the advocacy of new policies for the 1990s--a handy volume for politicians and their staffs, as well as for students and teachers of politics and economics.

Stewart Brewer - Borders and Bridges, A History of U.S.-Latin American Relations (2006).jpg

The symbiotic relationship between the United States and Latin America has been filled with bitterness and anguish, on the one hand, and hope and cooperation, on the other. Each provides something the other lacks, and thus the relationship has the potential to work to the advantage of both. Brewer provides an introduction to the the most important events in the diplomatic, military, social, and economic history of the relationship between the United States and countries of Latin America. Soon after the American Revolutionary War, the new nation needed to build a solid relationship with Latin American countries in order to survive. The apex of hemispheric relations was not reached until World War II, when the area witnessed an unprecedented level of cooperation and mutual collaboration. This era ended with the onset of the Cold War, when the competition between capitalism and communism was fought by proxy throughout the developing world, adversely affecting the ability of Latin American nations to develop independent identities or thriving economies. Brewer argues that the events of 9/11 changed this relationship very little. Indeed, many of the issues that have long plagued U.S.-Latin American relations are returning as the United States focuses on the War on Terror in the Middle East and neglects its southern neighbors.

Andrew Taslitz - Reconstructing the Fourth Amendme nt, A History of Search and Seizure, 1789-1868 (20 06).jpg

"A remarkable accomplishment. Taslitz presents what is one of the most radical challenges to standard constitutional thinking—not just about searches and seizures but also about the interpretation of the fourteenth amendment as a protection of individual rights—in recent literature."
—H. Jefferson Powell, Duke Law School
The modern law of search and seizure permits warrantless searches that ruin the citizenry's trust in law enforcement, harms minorities, and embraces an individualistic notion of the rights that it protects, ignoring essential roles that properly-conceived protections of privacy, mobility, and property play in uniting Americans. Many believe the Fourth Amendment is a poor bulwark against state tyrannies, particularly during the War on Terror.
Historical amnesia has obscured the Fourth Amendment's positive aspects, and Andrew E. Taslitz rescues its forgotten history in Reconstructing the Fourth Amendment, which includes two novel arguments. First, that the original Fourth Amendment of 1791—born in political struggle between the English and the colonists—served important political functions, particularly in regulating expressive political violence. Second, that the Amendment's meaning changed when the Fourteenth Amendment was created to give teeth to outlawing slavery, and its focus shifted from primary emphasis on individualistic privacy notions as central to a white democratic polis to enhanced protections for group privacy, individual mobility, and property in a multi-racial republic.
With an understanding of the historical roots of the Fourth Amendment, suggests Taslitz, we can upend negative assumptions of modern search and seizure law, and create new institutional approaches that give political voice to citizens and safeguard against unnecessary humiliation and dehumanization at the hands of the police.

01 - USA - Rod Paige, Elaine Witty - The Black-White Achievement ...It Is the Greatest Civil Rights Issue of Our Time 2010.jpg

When it comes to race in America, we must face one uncomfortable but undeniable fact. Almost 50 years after the birth of the civil rights movement, inequality still reigns supreme in our classrooms. At a time when African-American students trail their white peers on academic tests and experience high dropout rates, low college completion rates, and a tendency to shy away from majors in hard sciences and mathematics, the Black-White achievement gap in our schools has become the major barrier to racial equality and social justice in America. In fact, it is arguably the greatest civil rights issue of our time.

John H. Brubaker, Jack Brubaker - Down the Susqueh anna to the Chesapeake (2002).jpg

As the largest river on the East Coast of the United States, the rolling Susquehanna, is the indispensable tributary of the Chesapeake Bay, the nation’s largest estuary. Gathering strength from scores of streams along its 444-mile journey, the river delivers half of the freshwater the bay requires to maintain its ecological balance.
Down the Susquehanna to the Chesapeake traces the course of the Susquehanna River through New York, Pennsylvania, and Maryland to the bay. Fifty-six short chapters discuss key locations along the route and how the river changes from sources to sea. These chapters also look at how natural resources influence, and in some ways shape, the lives of the people and their communities.
Along the river tour, Jack Brubaker examines the natural and human history of the Susquehanna, exploring how the river has been used and abused, as well as its current condition and future prospects. He explains how the unusually shallow, rocky river has substantially altered its drainage pattern over geologic time and how it continues to cut channels while erasing and creating islands.
For generations the Susquehanna has ebbed through the daily lives of the riverside residents, providing water to drink and a place to pump sewage. Floods have humbled those who chose to live close to the river’s edge, and droughts have fretted farmers. A vibrant fishery has provided sustenance and recreation for hundreds of thousands.
The Iroquois and the Susquehannocks reluctantly yielded the river to white settlers in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, when the Susquehanna defined the American frontier. Coal mining, lumbering, and hydroelectric and nuclear energy production polluted the water and nearly ruined the landscape beyond hope in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Hope returned in the latter part of the last century as the people of the Susquehanna began restoration efforts.
With the aid of more than 70 maps and illustrations, Down the Susquehanna to the Chesapeake provides a bold new look at a dynamic old river. This powerful journey brings alive the Susquehanna, its history, and the colorful personalities who live along its banks.

This book covers the small towns of North Carolina, that could indeed be considered "Mayberry". I bought this book as a reference in search of a place to relocate when I retire. Mark H. Zanger - The American Ethnic Cookbook For Students (2001).jpg

Gr 5 Up-A rich source of 400 recipes from 122 alphabetically arranged ethnic groups including 21 Native American tribes. However, these are not from the original culture, but rather are the American adaptations by people who remember another time and place. For each group there is a short informative history and a current estimate of population, followed by two to six recipes. The annotated bibliography includes Web sites that provide sources for more dishes. The family favorites range in difficulty, and a few line drawings illustrate complicated procedures. An instructional chapter on kitchen safety is useful for students as is the recipe index and an index by state. The appendix provides cross-cultural foods and their names in various countries. This book supplements Carole Lisa Albyn's Multicultural Cookbook for Students (1993) and Lois S. Webb's Holidays of the World Cookbook (1995, both Oryx). It includes groups that are difficult to find in other sources such as Carpatho-Rusyn-Americans, Hmong-Americans, and Slovene-Americans. Using these recipes will be a great motivation for students to learn about the varied heritage of our immigrant nation.

Bill Strickland - Tour de Lance, The Extraordinary Story of Lance Armstrong's Fight to Reclaim the T our de France (2010).jpg

01 - USA - Bill Strickland - Tour de Lance, The Extraordinary Sto...ce Armstrongs Fight to Reclaim the Tour de France 2010.jpg

Lance Armstrong is a worldwide icon, indisputably one of the greatest cyclists who has ever lived. After battling cancer and becoming an inspiration to millions, Armstrong won the Tour de France a record-breaking seven consecutive years before retiring from competition in 2005.
Four years later, at thirty-seven, Armstrong decided to come out of retirement and go for the win yet again. He was racing for no salary, in a season when his greatest rival--Tour de France, Tour of Italy, and Tour of Spain champion Alberto Contador--was on his own team. The twenty-five-year-old Spaniard had been handpicked by Armstrong's own mentor, Johan Bruyneel, to be his successor. Now he would be his fiercest competition. Armstrong was about to suffer like never before--and, for the first time in recent memory, appear to be human on a bicycle.
After seven Tour victories--and beating cancer--did Lance Armstrong really need to prove anything? Beyond the thrill of another possible victory, what drove him to race again? What was he seeking--and would he find it?
Cycling insider Bill Strickland had unprecedented access to Armstrong, Johan Bruyneel, and the team. He takes readers behind the scenes during the 2009 racing season and along for the ride on the Tour de France with a dramatic mile-by-mile account. Offering a penetrating and candid glimpse into the man behind the myth, Tour de Lance goes beyond a single season or a single race to reveal the heart of the sport and the soul of the cyclist.

Jim Gigliotti, John Walters, Larry Keith - Sports in America! 2000 - 2009 (2010).jpg

From the Preface:
Sports In America is much more than a com-
pilation of names, dates, and facts. Each volume
chronicles accomplishments and expansions of the
possible. Not just in the physical ability to perform,
but in the ability to create goals and determine
methods to achieve them. In this way, sports, the
sweaty offspring of recreation and competition,
resemble any other field of endeavor. I certainly
wouldn’t equate the race for a gold medal with the
race to the moon, but the building blocks are the
same: the intelligent application of talent, deter-
mination, research, practice, and hard work to a
meaningful objective...

Joseph H. Boyett - Won't Get Fooled Again, A Voter 's Guide to Seeing Through the Lies, Getting Past the Propaganda and Choosing the Best Leaders (2008 ).jpg

01 - USA - Joseph H. Boyett - Wont Get Fooled Again, A Voters Gui...Past the Propaganda and Choosing the Best Leaders 2008.jpg

In the last decade, incompetent leadership has done more to change the face of our world than perhaps in any other time in history. Recent events like Hurricane Katrina and the war in Iraq have proven that blind faith in our rulers is more than foolish--it can be downright dangerous. The world has grown more complicated and more volatile, and making intelligent decisions about the people in charge has never been more crucial. What causes us to follow bad leaders and how can we stop it? The answer is simple: If we want better leaders, we need to become better informed and more demanding followers. Won't Get Fooled Again is an eye-opening look at the politicians and other public servants who promise too much and deliver too little. Using extensive research and solid evidence, author Joseph Boyett reveals:

why we need leaders in the first place * how to tell if a leader is authentic * the top four red flags that your leader's vision is flawed * why "wishy-washy" candidates and "flip floppers" can make the best leaders Timely and revelatory, this is the one book that will change the way we vote, the way we see the world, and who we trust.

Lawrence J. Londino – Tiger Woods, A Biography (Se cond Editon) (2010).jpg

Tiger Woods: A Biography, Second Edition updates the 2008 edition to examine the life and career of this phenomenal athlete through the 2009 PGA Championship. The book provides information about Woods's parents and his upbringing, early life, and outstanding accomplishments as a professional golfer. It also covers Tiger's philanthropic activities including the Tiger Woods Foundation, a global organization that provides innovative educational opportunities to youth, the Tiger Woods Learning Center, and the Earl Woods Scholarship Program established to honor the spirit and vision of Tiger's father.

Recognizing that the opportunities Woods has had were hard won by early African American golfers—who were denied the right to play on the PGA Tour until 1961—the book also includes a chapter on these pioneers. The volume is rounded out with a brief history of broadcasting and sports, as well as a look at the relationship between athletes and sponsors.
