The United States today faces new kinds of adversaries, armed with an array of sinister weapons and capable of communicating and coordinating actions around the globe with unprecedented ease. As The Future of American Intelligence demonstrates, this dangerous new world requires changes in how the United States collects and analyzes intelligence and translates it into policy. These essays from a diverse group of distinguished contributors deepen our understanding of the new national security threats posed by terrorism, by the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, and by the spread of Islamic extremism. They examine the obstacles-intellectual, governmental, bureaucratic, military, and technological-to making U.S. intelligence more effective and offer thoughtful recommendations for reform. Approaching the problem from a variety of disciplinary perspectives, the authors stress how it is critical that the intelligence community revise its deeply entrenched assumptions and ideas about how to collect and analyze intelligence. They reveal how those assumptions led the United States to overlook the gravity of the threat posed by bin Laden and be dead wrong about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq-and how they generally stifle creative thinking and independent judgment within intelligence agencies. Their recommendations include suggestions for reforming the management style and the organizational structure of the intelligence services as well as establishing more effective procedures for taking advantage of both current and future technological advances.

Dope Inc. makes a solid case, not just through connecting the dots and theorizing, but also indisputable documentation, that the worlds Heroin trade was and still is controlled by an octopus network of "respectable" world elites, including British aristocrats leading all the way up to the House of Windsor, British based Jewish bankers who finance and launder money for drug operations, a handful of super wealthy blue blood WASP families from the New England area of the USA, with underlings like the so called Mafia, the Chinese Triads and also shows how the drug trade is tightly interwoven with the gold and diamond trade. Another thing I found interesting is how their servants like the Bronfmans and Kennedys moved up the ladder from being disreputable gangsters to high level servants of the elites. Bronfmans have intermarried with Rothschilds and Kennedys with the British aristocracy.

It also has good info on the Chinese Opium wars where the British sent troops into China because the Chinese began to crack down on Opium use and stop British shipments of Opium grown in India into China. Yes they invaded China because China had had enough of Britain enslaving their population to drugs and getting richer off of it. This is mainstream history. Just look up Chinese Opium wars or the British East India Company on Wikipedia or on a search engine. Something tells me your average dumb downed brainwashed University history major has no clue that this ever occured.

The criticisms I have of this are when they go into the occultic side of some of these secret societies I don't agree with all of this books conclusions as to what these groups true beliefs or origins are. There is a lot of political and social bias in this book so you have to watch some of that. I also disagree with the stance this book takes on legalization. If it were up to me Marijuana would be legalized tomorrow and I would at least take a long hard look at legalizing other drugs. Dope Inc and the information in it is dated too. The gears have shifted quite a bit now that they have moved new world order troops into Afhanistan, whose Heroin production suddenly went through the roof after the Taliban was deposed. In spite of those critiques this is still a must read book.

Jones' biography, from the new Modern World Leaders series (with an introduction by historian Arthur Schlesinger), begins with an administration high point: when Bush snuck into Iraq on Thanksgiving Day in 2003 to thank the troops personally. The book then returns to Bush's beginnings and proceeds chronologically through his early days, business life, and political career. Jones seems to give Bush the benefit of the doubt on controversial issues. For instance, in describing the president's actions on September 11, she says that when Bush received the news about a plane hitting the World Trade Center, he thought it had been an accident or mechanical failure. There's no mention of a recent briefing that specifically mentioned planes flying into buildings. The criticism the administration received following Hurricane Katrina gets short shrift as well--one paragraph and a photo caption. Photographs are well chosen, and although there's an extensive bibliography, there are no source notes. A chronology and a list of books for further reading are appended.

If you've been waiting for centuries for a full translation of Adriaen van der Donck's 1655 work A Description of New Netherland, your wait is over. In this work, edited by Charles T. Gehring and William A. Starna, one of the colony's most astute observers ruminates on flora and fauna (his six-foot-long lobster sounds like the subject of a proverbial fish story), including meditations on "the amazing ways" of beavers and sightings of beached whales near Albany.

After opening in the midst of the exciting swim for an 8th gold medal at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, this title soon turns to Michael’s beginnings, which seemed less than promising. Around age 9, he was diagnosed as having ADHD, and a teacher told his mom that he would "never be able to focus on anything." But Michael and his mom saw things differently, especially after Michael began trying to swim. While he was afraid for his face to be underwater at first, he soon conquered that fear and began to swim straight ahead into what would become a record-setting career. Today, Michael is hailed as 'the greatest Olympic athlete of all time !
This inspiring read will introduce kids to the person behind the legend…a person perhaps not so different from the kids themselves.

Financial Market Meltdown: Everything You Need to Know to Understand and Survive the Global Credit Crisis makes the arcane world of finance easily understood in concrete terms. This is not simply a quick recap of the current crisis. It is a guide designed to develop a real and lasting understanding of money and finance—an understanding readers can use to come to their own conclusions regarding the 2008 meltdown and any further economic events.

Financial Market Meltdown explains the nature and workings of money, credit, financial instruments, and markets, from the beginnings of integrated finance in Medieval Italy up to the panic of 2008. It then describes how the modern global financial ecology evolved through a series of historical accidents and how this limits what can actually be done to make the system "safe." Throughout, author Kevin Mellyn uses simple examples, analogies, and the "real" history of institutions to make abstract financial concepts concrete and comprehensible.

They seem like unrelated concepts: civil rights and math literacy; Freedom Summer and the Algebra Project. When the individual who links them is Bob Moses, however, the unanticipated connections are worth exploring. Moses was a Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee organizer in Mississippi in the 1960s. In part 1, he discusses the lessons of that experience, particularly involving the entire community and defining a goal (in Mississippi, voting rights) that empowers the community to address its other needs. In the twenty-first century, Moses argues, "the most urgent social issue affecting poor people and people of color is economic access . . . [and] economic access and full citizenship depend crucially on math and science literacy." For two decades, Moses and his associates have been developing an approach to middle-school math aimed at preparing every child for high-school and then college mathematics. Part 2 of Radical Equations traces that effort, its experiential pedagogy, and its application in urban and rural school districts. A surprising study of continuity and change in the struggle to reduce inequality and empower communities.

Hacsi (research assistant, Harvard; Second Home) opens this book with a simple question "How can we improve our schools?" and goes on to suggest that reform efforts must be rooted in solid research. Unfortunately, as he notes, the manner in which evaluative research on educational programs is conducted is fraught with difficulties, and, even worse, the ways in which the results of educational research are disseminated and reported are subject to powerful political pressures at every level. By providing historical case studies of what the research "really" tells us about controversial programs such as Head Start and bilingual education, Hacsi clearly demonstrates the influence that political interests can have on public perception of the efficacy of educational reform programs. As he demonstrates in every case presented in this book, we must all "be wary of advocates for a specific program who tell [us] that 'the evidence shows' the advocate is right." This sage advice reinforces the lessons learned in other recent studies of the politics of educational research, including Maris A. Vinovskis's History and Educational Policymaking (Yale Univ., 1999) and Ellen Condliffe Lagemann's An Elusive Science (LJ 5/15/00). Highly recommended for all academic libraries. Running from New Orleans to St. Louis in the summer of 1870, the race between the Robert E. Lee and the Natchez remains the world's most famous steamboat race. This book tells the story of the dramatic contest, which was won by the stripped-down, cargoless Robert E. Lee after three days, 18 hours, and 14 minutes of steaming through day, night and fog. The Natchez finished the race only hours later, having been delayed by carrying her normal load and tying up overnight because of the intense fog. Providing details on not only the race narrative but also on the boats themselves, the book gives an intimate look at the majestic vessels that conquered the country's greatest waterway and defined the bravado of 19th-century America.

These two critically-acclaimed volumes mark the beginning of a monumental multi-volume study of baseball by the man whom Sports Illustrated has called "the Edward Gibbon of baseball history." Now available in paperback, Harold Seymour's The Early Years and The Golden Age together recount the true story of how baseball came into being and how it developed into a highly organized business and social institution.

The first volume, The Early Years, traces the growth of baseball from the time of the first recorded ball game at Valley Forge during the revolution until the formation of the two present-day major leagues in 1903. By investigating previously unknown sources, Seymour uncovers the real story of how baseball evolved from a gentleman's amateur sport of "well-bred play followed by well-laden banquet tables" into a professional sport where big leagues operate under their own laws. Offering countless anecdotes and a wealth of new information, Seymour explodes many cherished myths, including the one which claims that Abner Doubleday "invented" baseball in 1839. He describes the influence of baseball on American business, manners, morals, social institutions, and even show business, as well as depicting the types of men who became the first professional ball players, club owners, and managers, including Spalding, McGraw, Comiskey, and Connie Mack.

The second volume, The Golden Age, explores the glorious era when the game truly captured the American imagination, with such legendary figures as Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb in the spotlight. Beginning with the formation of the two major leagues in 1903, when baseball officially entered its "golden age" of popularity, Seymour examines the changes in the organization of professional baseball--from an unwieldy three-man commission to the strong one-man rule of Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis. He depicts how the play on the field shifted from the low-scoring, pitcher-dominated game of the "dead ball" era before World War I to the higher scoring of the 1920's "lively ball" era, with emphasis on home runs, best exemplified by the exploits of Babe Ruth.

Taken together, these volumes offer a serious and dramatic study of the game both on the field and in the business offices.

Using newly-declassified documents, Grace Livingstone reveals the U.S. role in the darkest periods of Latin American history including Pinochet's coup in Chile, the Contra War in Nicaragua and the death squads in El Salvador. She shows how the U.S. administration used the War on Terror as a new pretext for intervention and how it tried to destabilize leftwing governments and push back the 'pink tide' washing across the Americas. America's Backyard also has chapters on drugs, economy and culture. It explains why U.S. drug policy has caused widespread environmental damage, yet failed to reduce the supply of cocaine and looks at the U.S. economic stake in Latin America and the strategies of the big corporations. Today Latin Americans are demanding respect and an end to the Washington Consensus. Will the White House listen?

Kansas had only a few years in which its bankers and merchants issued the now-obsolete notes that have become such popular--and rare--collector's items. This heavily illustrated history details Kansas paper bank notes and scrip through 1935. Like the Society of Paper Money Collectors' state catalogs it provides history and listings of specific notes and comments on their rarity, but it is unique in grouping notes and issuers alphabetically according to the economic period in which the notes were issued. Notes are separated into three major categories: municipal governments, merchants, and banks. Appendices examine modern reproductions of obsolete currency, altered notes and write-in scrip, the printers and engravers who created the physical notes, and more.
