About the Author
Anton Chaitkin is a founding member of the political movement associated with Lyndon LaRouche. He is the history editor of Executive Intelligence Review, and has written numerous articles on political and economic history. His 1992 book, George Bush: The Unauthorized Biography, co-authored with Webster Tarpley, stands as the definitive biography of the former President.

Chaitkin was born in New York City in 1943, the son of Jacob Chaitkin, an attorney who spent the 1930s fighting Nazi Germany's corporate and legal collaborators on Wall Street.

Anton Chaitkin attended public school in Pasadena, California. His study of the history of the U.S. "Eastern Establishment" began in 1978, after he became aware of the startling inaccuracy of the relevant historical material in such publications as The New York Times. Chaitkin and his wife are the parents of a grown son, and live in Leesburg, Virginia. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Gabriel's Rebellion tells the dramatic story of what was perhaps the most extensive slave conspiracy in the history of the American South. Douglas Egerton illuminates the complex motivations that underlay two related Virginia slave revolts: the first, in 1800, led by the slave known as Gabriel; and the second, called the 'Easter Plot,' instigated in 1802 by one of his followers. Although Gabriel has frequently been portrayed as a messianic, Samson-like figure, Egerton shows that he was a literate and highly skilled blacksmith whose primary goal was to destroy the economic hegemony of the 'merchants, the only whites he ever identified as his enemies. According to Egerton, the social, political, and economic disorder of the Revolutionary era weakened some of the harsh controls that held slavery in place during colonial times. Emboldened by these conditions, a small number of literate slaves—most of them highly skilled artisans—planned an armed insurrection aimed at destroying slavery in Virginia. The intricate scheme failed, as did the Easter Plot that stemmed from it, and Gabriel and many of his followers were hanged. By placing the revolts within the broader context of the volatile political currents of the day, Egerton challenges the conventional understanding of race, class, and politics in the early days of the American republic.

Because future military operations are likely to include actions in densely populated, built-up areas, joint and service training initiatives over the past decade have increasingly reflected an interest in preparing for such contingencies. To assist the military community in better orchestrating its resources to improve forcewide readiness for urban operations, RAND was asked to develop a joint urban training strategy for the period 2005-2011. This report presents that strategy and describes the process used to develop it. The study identifies areas in need of redress and proposes ways in which the services Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force and other critical components of national capability can better ready themselves cooperatively for future urban operations.
