Hurricane Katrina is the latest in a series of major disasters that were not well managed, but it is not likely to be the last. Category 4 and category 5 hurricanes will, according to most predictions, become both more frequent and more intense in the future due to global warming and/or natural weather cycles. In addition, it is often said that another terrorist attack on the United States is inevitable; that it is a question of when, not whether. Add to that the scare over a possible avian flu pandemic. As a result, the United States should expect that disaster response--to natural and other types of disasters--will continue to be of vital concern to the American public and the policymakers and officials who deal with disaster response and relief, including the military. The U.S. disaster relief program reflects a basic division of responsibility between federal, state, and local governments that has generally stood the test of time. At the federal level, a single agency, FEMA--now under the Department of Homeland Security--has been charged with the responsibility for coordinating the activities of the various federal agencies that have a role in disaster relief. A successful disaster response requires three things: timely and effective coordination between state and federal governments; effective coordination among the federal agencies; and effective coordination between and among state and local government agencies. Miskel, a former Deputy Assistant Associate Director of FEMA, examines the effects that operational failures after Hurricanes Agnes, Hugo, Andrew, and Katrina have had on the organizational design and operating principles of the disaster response system program. He also discusses the impact of 9/11 and the evolving role of the military, and he identifies reforms that should be implemented to improve the nation's ability to respond in the future.

Longman Dictionary of American English, Special Ed ition (2009).jpg

Real Language
All Longman dictionaries are based on the authentic language data in the Longman Corpus Network. This unique computerized language database now contains over 400 million words from all types of written texts, and from real conversations recorded across the US. The Corpus tells us how frequently words and phrases are used, so there is no guesswork in deciding which ones students need to know most. The Corpus also shows which grammar patterns are the most important to illustrate, which important new words and idioms people use every day, and which words are frequently used together (collocations). We take our example sentences from the Corpus, and this makes the language come alive as never before.

Real Clarity
The definitions in Longman dictionaries are written using only the 2,000 most common English words – the Longman American Defining Vocabulary. Longman pioneered the use of a limited vocabulary as the best way to guarantee that definitions are clear and easy to understand. The meaning you want is easy to find. Words that have a large number of meanings have short, clear signposts to guide you to the right meaning quickly. The comprehensive grammatical information is easy to understand and use. Important patterns are highlighted in the example sentences, so that you can see at a glance how to use a word in a sentence.

Selig S. Harrison - Superpower Rivalry in the In dian Ocean, Indian and American Perspectives (198 9).jpg

The vast, politically turbulent region encompassing the Indian Ocean, the Persian Gulf, forty-two littoral states, and one third of the world's population is one of the most potentially explosive theaters of superpower rivalry. In this study, three American and three Indian authors, reflecting different perspectives and areas of expertise, examine the principal factors that have led to the escalation of superpower tensions in the region: the war in Afghanistan, and its spillover into the Afghanistan-Pakistani borderlands; the Indo-Pakistani nuclear arms race; ethnic tensions in Sri Lanka; the Iran-Iraq war; Islamic fundamentalism; and the rapidly growing military presence of the superpowers in the area. Considering how India's emergence as a military power is influencing superpower and indigenous tensions in the region, the contributors compare Indian, American, and Soviet interests, and offer solutions for current Indian-American disagreements.

Shari Dorantes Hatch - Encyclopedia of African Ame rican Writing, Five Centuries of Contribution (200 9).jpg

This unique title profiles several hundred African American fiction and nonfiction writers from Colonial times to the present. The table of contents lists the authors alphabetically and then divides them into 17 categories (novels, short stories, slave narratives, etc.) and nine themes (Folktales, the Harlem Renaissance, Trickster Tales, etc.); authors whose work spans several categories are listed separately under each. The profiles themselves, presented alphabetically and ranging from a paragraph for less well known writers like Ai Ogawa to three pages for writers like Ralph Ellison or Terry McMillan, are both biographical and critical, although the amount of criticism varies. Included in each entry are the writer's birth and death dates, the categories into which he or she fits, and any pseudonyms. Black-and-white illustrations, references, genre lists, a comprehensive index, and chronologies of the writer's life dates and of African American literary firsts complete this impressive title.

Gary Williams - US-Grenada Relations, Revolution a nd Intervention in the Backyard (2007).jpg

Why did the world's strongest power intervene militarily in the tiny Commonwealth Caribbean island of Grenada in October 1983? This book focuses on United States-Grenada relations between 1979 and 1983 set against the wider historical context of US-Caribbean Basin relations. It presents an in-depth study of US policy during the Carter and Reagan presidencies and the deterioration of relations with the Marxist-Leninist People's Revolution Government (PRG) of Grenada. It considers in detail the murderous internal power struggle that destroyed the PRG and the decisionmaking process that resulted in a joint US-Caribbean military intervention.

Facts on File Library of American History - Susan Burch - Encyclopedia of American Disability Histor y (2009).jpg

01 - USA1 - Facts on File Library of American History - Susan Burc...ch - Encyclopedia of American Disability History 2009.jpg

Compiled by Burch, cofounder and board member of the Disability History Association and recipient of a Mellon Seminar Fellowship and Fulbright Lecturing Award, this work focuses on the importance of disability in American history, the need to explain disability in historical rather than medical terms, and the varieties and similarities of the historical experiences among those with disabilities. It thus succeeds in bringing to the forefront something that has typically gone unnoticed, allowing us to understand America in new ways by looking at it through a specific lens. The over 750 entries, contributed by over 350 authors nationwide, cover activists, disabled persons, authors, and inventors. Also covered are topics relating to disability in general, such as disorders, organizations, governmental institutes, acts and legal cases, publications, movements, sites of importance, events, major historical experiences, stereotypes, popular culture, autobiographical essays, and literature. The set includes an A-to-Z list of the entries; a separate list of documents included with the entries facilitates the quick location of primary resources. Each volume also includes an index of the work as a whole, enabling easy access to entries of interest. BOTTOM LINE Written at a reading level appropriate to the high school researcher, this work is equally valuable to the college student seeking to learn more about disabilities, American history, or persons who have been involved with disabilities in America

Facts on File Library of American History - Liz So nnenborn - Chronology of American Indian History ( 2007).jpg

A valuable resource for students, teachers, and librarians, this updated edition by an award-winning author of more than 50 books presents a time line of Native North American life, history, and culture from around 25,000 BCE to 2006. Approximately 1,500 brief entries highlight significant events in 11 chapters, starting with "Before 1492" and ending with a new chapter, "2000 to the Present." The previous edition was published in 2001. Topics include origins and early migration patterns of Indians into North America; all major wars, battles, and conflicts; federal Indian policies; resettlement issues and life on reservations; Indian participation in the world wars, American film, and government; the Indian Rights movement and political organization; advances made in education; the legal status and health of Indian populations; and Native American art, religion, music, and literature. Black-and-white photos, a map, and sidebars with quotes by famous Indians and non-Indians add further interest. A glossary, a list of works discussed in the entries, a bibliography, and an index complete the work. Not intended as a stand-alone, this title would work best when used in conjunction with other resources like The Gale Encyclopedia of Native American Tribes (1998) and Encyclopedia of Native American Tribes (Facts On File, 2006). It is recommended for academic and public libraries as well as special collections.

01 - USA1 - Facts on File Library of American History - Ballard C....sters, Accidents, and Crises in American History 2008.jpg

Lhasa apsos, terriers, and beagles, oh my! More than 160 American Kennel Club–recognized breeds in the areas of sporting, hound, working, terrier, toy, nonsporting, herding, and “miscellaneous”—those not yet placed in an AKC group—are beautifully described here in a condensed version of Barron’s Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds (2d ed., 2005). Although the same breeds are included, this version leaves out some introductory and back-matter material and the sidebars, which provide a detailed black-and-white breed illustration. Full-page entries contain the breed name; brief descriptions of history, temperament, upkeep, and health concerns; a captioned color photo of the full body and close up of snout area; and highlighted data on the origin, function, coat, color, and height and weight of the breed. For example, the captioned color photo for the Finnish Spitz breed includes descriptions of its almond-shaped eyes; foxlike head and expression; small, high-set erect ears; plumed tail; and round feet. A sidebar rates eight personality and grooming traits from 1 to 5. For example, the Pekingese entry rates energy level, exercise requirements, playfulness, and ease of training at level 1 (low); affection and friendliness at level 2; and grooming at level 5 (high); and it recommends this breed for lap purposes only. The information provided is perfect for selecting the appropriate pooch based on personality, good looks (check out the Komondor and Puli—black and white “mops”), or grooming and health needs. Front and back matter include an overview of the breed entries with explanations of ratings, descriptions of the eight AKC groups, a glossary of medical conditions from achondroplasia to zinc responsive dermatosis, a glossary of breed color terms, and a listing of health resources. Entries are consistent in coverage and design, making it easy to compare breeds. This small, spiral-bound book is perfect for circulating or reference collections in school and public libraries.
