As the summer comes to an end, Felicity's father begins nagging her about her future. She hopes to prove that she has a future in her major by gaining admission to the honors art program. Ben returns from the EMT training session and announces that he wants to become a doctor. He signs up for a heavy course-load, and realizes that he will have to stay in school a fifth year to finish his pre-med requirements. Felicity's father comes to town and accuses her of wasting her college years. She becomes furious at his interference and decides to pay for her final year of college herself. Javier serves as a go-between for Elena and his cousin, who is designing her wedding dress. Elena is extremely demanding, and Javier eventually becomes fed up with her attitude. He apologizes after realizing that she was trying to duplicate her late mother's dress. Sean and Meghan quarrel after she names Tracy to a hypothetical list of men with whom she wants to have sex.

A woman known for identifying trends congratulates Meghan on her "look." Sean decides to market shirts with tube socks as sleeves, but Meghan doesn't want people copying her. She soon discovers that she isn't as original as she had thought. Richard meets a fellow Star Wars fanatic at the Halloween party, but his plans for romance go awry when his homemade Darth Vader helmet gets stuck.

Ben learns that his father is being hospitalized with liver failure. He reluctantly goes to the hospital and meets Lauren, a friend of Mr. Covington's from A.A. She tells Ben that his father does not have long to live. Ben postpones a ski trip that he and Felicity had planned for her birthday after his father's condition worsens. Felicity suspects that Professor Cavallo is coming on to her. He denies this, but she grows uneasy over his relationship with a student. Noel refuses to post job listings for the students, and interviews for several of the positions himself. He must deal with two loud and obnoxious freshman girls, who have come to dislike living on an all-guys floor. They end up being assigned to Felicity and Elena's apartment, where they work Elena's last nerve. The girls feign an interest in Richard in the hopes of getting closer to Noel. Richard loudly complains about Noel's alleged success with women as Elena leaves Noel an angry phone message. The speaker phone picks up Richard saying that Noel slept with Felicity, so he and Elena have to hurry to the loft to erase the message before Ben can hear it. Meghan and Sean decide to start a shirt company.

Elena continues to help Trevor with organic chemistry, while a focused Ben excels as he tries to distract himself from his problems with Felicity. Elena and Trevor argue about whether men are more predisposed toward cheating than women.

Sean realizes what they are doing, and Trevor is offended. After Samuel fails to show concern for Javier's ailing cat, Javier decides to leave him. Noel's brother Ryan comes to town for the holiday. He is confused when Noel takes him to a restaurant instead of going to the gang's gathering.

Javier tries to fight off the advances of a widow in his acting class. He finally reveals that he is gay. Noel sees a therapist, who diagnoses him with depression, but he is reluctant to take medication.

Meghan's teenage sister Lila, who attends boarding school, comes for a visit. Meghan is stunned to discover that Lila is pregnant, and tries to convince her to share the news with their parents.

He confronts Lauren about keeping the news from him for so long. Although he is torn, he feels that he cannot take part in the child's life. He gets a second chance from Hodges by assuring him that he has eliminated all distractions. Ben finally shares the truth about the pregnancy with a shocked Felicity. Sean and Noel compete with Webb Graphics, the company that employed Noel for two days, for an account. Noel runs into Zoe after the presentation, and later has a date with her. Sean and Noel get the account, and Webb offers to hire them as consultants. Noel fears it would be awkward, but agrees after Zoe reveals that she has a boyfriend. Meghan is forced to take an acting class to fulfill graduation requirements. Javier asks her to be his scene partner for "All About Eve." He angers her by comparing her to Margo, the film's bitchy character. Elena is accepted to medical school.

She fears that she is busted after the professor asks to speak with her. However, Professor Carnes instead tells Felicity that she loves the paper and has submitted it for publication. Meghan advises Felicity to destroy the dissertation and tell the professor that she doesn't want to be published. A library worker catches Felicity trying to throw out the book, but Meghan later cuts a deal with him and steals it. Professor Carnes informs Felicity that some members of the university journal's review board have questions about whether Felicity wrote the paper. Felicity confesses the truth to Ben.

Felicity learns that Ben has been injured in a car accident. Lauren suffered minor injuries, and the baby was unharmed. Felicity overhears the doctor say that Lauren was driving while drunk. Sean shows way too much interest in Noel's love life. Noel begins to fear that Zoe isn't attracted to him because they have yet to sleep together. She later assures him that this is not the case; she had been depressed the past few weeks because she had stopped taking her medication. Richard asks Elena to go to a dance with him to make another girl jealous. She punches him after learning that he only asked her because she is black.
