How does religion stimulate and feed imperial ambitions and violence? Recently this question has acquired new urgency, and in Religion, Empire, and Torture, Bruce Lincoln approaches the problem via a classic but little-studied case: Achaemenian Persia.

Lincoln identifies three core components of an imperial theology that have transhistorical and contemporary relevance: dualistic ethics, a theory of divine election, and a sense of salvific mission. Beyond this, he asks, how did the Achaemenians understand their place in the cosmos and their moral status in relation to others? Why did they feel called to intervene in the struggle between good and evil? What was their sense of historic purpose, especially their desire to restore paradise lost? And how did this lead them to deal with enemies and critics as imperial power ran its course? Lincoln shows how these religious ideas shaped Achaemenian practice and brought the Persians unprecedented wealth, power, and territory, but also produced unmanageable contradictions, as in a gruesome case of torture discussed in the book’s final chapter. Close study of that episode leads Lincoln back to the present with a postscript that provides a searing and utterly novel perspective on the photographs from Abu Ghraib.

The Ml 13 APC (Armored Personnel Carrier) Is one of the most used full-tracked vehicles ever. Not only the US Army but nearly every army in the world uses at least one type of this aluminum armored vehicle. The first diesel-powered Ml 13, designated M113A1, was produced in I960, replacing the aging M59.
The M113 is air-dropable and air-transportable. In addition, it is amphibious , which permit it to cross inland waterways. The basic design of the M113 became the basis of what was to lxxome a family of more than a dozen vehicle adaptions, with each new model retaining the basic features of the family. As product improvements became available, ford Motor Company and Government efforts resulted in the development of mortar vehicles, Vulcan air defense vehicles and specialized vehicles such as recovery and fitter's models.

With t he Soviet BMP infant ry fighting vehicle already in serv ice and the BTR·GO being developed, performance capabi lities had to match, or better still , outclass theirs, Next to that, the new design should be able to keep up in speed with its future "Brot her in Arms", t he M1 ABRAMS tank , one of t he crttenas where an updated version Of the M113 would fail.
In it ial pla ns t o acquire a li censed -built German MARDER were dropped on t he basis of rather poor armor protection, inadequate fire power and high cost. After a lot of turmoil within the Defense Department on t his new MICV desig n, FMC corporation was awarded a development contract fo r eig ht init ial prototypes, which it delivered for testing in 1978. Named in horror of t he famous WWII ge nera l, omar N. BRADLEV, seve ra l hundred M2 (Infant ry) and M3 rcavatrvi MICV's were to be delivered to units both statestoe and overseas from 1982onwards.

It also reconsiders the debate about John Locke's influence in America, challenging a number of other interpretations. The book argues that Locke's theory of property must be understood in connection with the philosopher's political concerns, as part of his endeavour to justify the colonialist policies of Lord Shaftesbury's cabinet, with which he was personally associated. The author maintains that traditional scholarship has failed to do justice to Locke by ignoring the implications of contemporary British imperial policy for the interpretation of his political thought.
The book offers a new insight into Locke's theory of property, suggesting a solution to the problem of why Locke himself assigned such importance to property in the state of nature being based on labour while at the same time asserting that property in civil society is based on convention.

Zombie stories are peculiarly American, as the creature was born in "The New World" and functions as a reminder of the atrocities of colonialism and slavery. The voodoo-based zombie films of the 1930s and '40s reveal deep-seated racist attitudes and imperialist paranoia, but the zombie invasion narrative established by George A. Romero has even greater singularity. Before 1865, slavery and freedom coexisted tenuously in America in an environment that made it possible not only for enslaved women to become free but also for emancipated women to suddenly lose their independence. Wilma King now examines a wide-ranging body of literature to show that, even in the face of economic deprivation and draconian legislation, many free black women were able to maintain some form of autonomy and lead meaningful lives. "The Essence of Liberty" blends social, political, and economic history to analyze black women's experience in both the North and the South, from the colonial period through emancipation. Focusing on class and familial relationships, King examines the myriad sources of freedom for black women to show the many factors that, along with time spent in slavery before emancipation, shaped the meaning of freedom. Her book also raises questions about whether free women were bound to or liberated from gender conventions of their day. Drawing on a wealth of untapped primary sources - not only legal documents and newspapers but also the diaries, letters, and autobiographical writings of free women - King opens a new window on the world of black women. She examines how they became free, educated themselves, found jobs, maintained self-esteem, and developed social consciousness - even participating in the abolitionist movement. She considers the stance of southern free women toward their enslaved contemporaries and the interactions between previously free and newly freed women after slavery ended. She also looks closely at women's spirituality, disclosing the dilemma some women faced when they took a stand against men - even black men - in order to follow their spiritual callings. Pettus traces felony disenfranchisement from Athenian democracy to the present. The majority of the disenfranchised today are African-American, and most felony convictions are drug-related. Nonetheless, drug use and trafficking are equally distributed across demographic groups. The current variation in state laws disenfranchising felons, the lack of standard definitions of felonies, and the racial disparities within the criminal justice system reproduce many of the inequalities of the colonial America, despite the development of federal citizenship and voting rights law since the end of the Civil War.
