After a long period of prosperity and steady economic growth, the world's leading economies are now in crisis, and although there will be debate about its origins, the scale and seriousness of the crisis is in no doubt. There is also no doubt that excessive amounts of consumer credit, allied to a weak understanding of how globalised credit markets might react to a crisis, have played a significant part. This book, which is primarily about credit, debt and the trouble they have led to, is written by authors who have specialised in researching into over-indebtedness, that is, situations in which an individual's debt burden has become overwhelming. For these authors the plight of individuals is a primary concern, but the wider issue is how credit is used and how it changes societies. The essays in this volume, addressing topics which are fundamental to our understanding of the current crisis, range widely across the whole sector of consumer finance, including mortgages, 'credit-binges', the regulation of consumer lending, insolvency, repayment plans, debt counselling and much more besides. The conclusions drawn from the book are equally wide-ranging, but above all the lesson learned from these essays is that the financialisation of contemporary life ensures that issues of the appropriate role of credit remain of critical importance in society.

I first got this book and read it in eighth grade. I read it once a year ever since! This is, without a doubt, the quintessential book on the US Navy in World War II. (That is, excluding his 15 volume set) Well written, it shows not only the big picture, but the smaller battles and skirmishes. Morison goes over the buildup to it, speaking of the "Twenty Years' Peace", sheds light on the oft-overlooked ABDA command, talks about the attack on Pearl Harbor in-depth, gives amazingly accurate details on the Battle for the Atlantic, and speaks of the battles that have become synonymous with the Pacific, as well as some that may be new to even the most accomplished World War II/Navy buff. A great read, and it's a great way to understand how important the US Navy was in WWII.

Philip D. Beidler, who served as an armored cavalry platoon leader in Vietnam, sees less and less of the hard-won perspective of the common soldier in what America has made of that war. Each passing year, he says, dulls our sense of immediacy about Vietnam’s costs, opening wider the emptation to make it something more necessary, neatly contained, and justifiable than it should ever become. Here Beidler draws on deeply personal memories to reflect on the war’s lingering aftereffects and the shallow, evasive ways we deal with them.
Beidler brings back the war he knew in chapters on its vocabulary, music, literature, and film. His catalog of soldier slang reveals how finely a tour of Vietnam could hone one’s sense of absurdity. His survey of the war’s pop hits looks for meaning in the soundtrack many veterans still hear in their heads. Beidler also explains how "Viet Pulp" literature about snipers, tunnel rats, and other hard-core types has pushed aside masterpieces like Duong Thu Huong’s Novel without a Name. Likewise we learn why the movie The Deer Hunter doesn’t "get it" about Vietnam but why Platoon and We Were Soldiers sometimes nearly do.
As Beidler takes measure of his own wartime politics and morals, he ponders the divergent careers of such figures as William Calley, the army lieutenant whose name is synonymous with the civilian massacre at My Lai, and an old friend, poet John Balaban, a conscientious objector who performed alternative duty in Vietnam as a schoolteacher and hospital worker. Beidler also looks at Vietnam alongside other conflicts—-including the war on international terrorism. He once hoped, he says, that Vietnam had fractured our sense of providential destiny and geopolitical invincibility but now realizes, with dismay, that those myths are still with us. "Americans have always wanted their apocalypses," writes Beidler, "and they have always wanted them now."

Barry Eichengreen - Globalizing Capital, A History of the International Monetary System (2008).jpg

Eichengreen (Univ. of California-Berkeley), the author of Golden Fetters: The Gold Standard and the Great Depression, 1918-1939 (Oxford Univ., 1992), uses a detailed history of exchange rate systems to support his theory that the democratization of political processes has presented competing goals to policymakers, making it more difficult for them to commit to fixed rates of exchange. His explanation for the movement toward floating exchange rates is controversial but well argued. The information he cites is current, and he incorporates a discussion of the European Monetary System and its future. Eichengreen's presentation of history is solid, with ample references. General readers will benefit from the glossary of his technical terms. His book will be the most useful to economists, historians, political scientists, and finance professionals.

The M2/M3 Bradley infantry fighting vehicle was developed to replace the M113. With increased firepower compared to its predecessor, the Bradley is also superior in mobility and armor protection. It has a two-man stabilized turret as a platform for a 25mm Bushmaster chin gun, a M240 co-axial MG, and a two-tube TOW launcher with a seven-man dismount team.

The M2A2/M3A2 Bradley went into service with the 3d INF and 1st INF in 1989/90. It played a major role in the ground war for the liberation of Kuwait during Operation "Desert Storm" in 1991. During the Gulf War, the Bradley fleet proved to be very reliable. Only 3 vehicles were destroyed by enemy fire, with 17 vehicles by friendly fire. As a result of "Desert Storm", an improvement program for the Bradley begun. These modified vehicles received the code M2A2 ODS/M3A2 ODS.

The authors Walter Bohm and Peter Siebert are regular contributors to Concord's range of modern armor books. Most photos were taken in Germany, where the Bradleys roam through the countryside as will. There are also photos of Bradleys serving in Kosovo. A section is devoted to Bradley variants and special markings.

Much has been written about the Coalition invasion of Iraq in 2003, but there has been much less written about the United States Marine Corps' role specifically. Indeed, there are very few volumes that provide a concise yet full summary of the complete operation carried out by the Marines. This book provides a valuable survey of what the Marines of mostly I MEF achieved in this historic liberation of Iraq. This book focuses primarily on the vehicles and weapons used by Marine ground forces.

In a day-by-day account, the carefully researched volume describes the main and relevant events from pre-invasion, right through to the presidential declaration of the end of hostilities. The battles, the strategies, are all delineated in informative fashion in the text. This is backed up by the wide range of photos, many obtained from Marine combat photographers who were covering the invasion. This ensures that there is a wide range of settings, units and vehicles covered. Readers will find inspirational pictures of M1 tanks, AAVs, LAVs, artillery, and a full range of trucks and Humvees. This includes such things as destroyed or abandoned USMC and Iraqi equipment. These vehicles will provide modelers with tons of ideas in terms of combat loads, markings and weathering.

Besides two 1/35 scale plans, the book also contains four color plates featuring some of the key vehicles that were used by the Marines. Photo captions are full and descriptive, giving exact details of locations, units and dates, as well as useful background information. In terms of providing an easy to read survey of the Marines in OIF 1, plus an action-packed photographic record of this important campaign, this book is unsurpassed.

The USA has been embroiled in the ongoing insurgency in Iraq since Operation Iraqi Freedom kicked off on 23 March 2003. "Marines on the Ground: Operation Iraqi Freedom 1" covered the important role played by the United States Marine Corps (USMC) in the initial invasion. The second volume in this two-part series has now been released, and it carries on the story of I MEF's return to Iraq in March 2004 through to the end of March 2005 when responsibility was handed over to II MEF.

As in the earlier volume, this book utilizes official photos taken by USMC photographers. This ensures a wide variety of photos covering different locations, units and vehicles are included. Operation Al Fajr, the violent Battle of Fallujah, is extremely well covered in a detailed chapter that offers a day-by-day action of the fighting. Understanding of this operation is boosted by a personal battle account from Andreas Elesky , MSgt USMC (Ret.), who participated in the fighting before being wounded in action. Other chapters cover such events as the Najaf Crisis and Iraq's first free national elections. Vehicles much in evidence in this photographic record include Humvees, MTVRs, LAVs, AAVs, and M1A1 Abrams tanks.

The book contains four color plates by Hubert Cance, two profile line drawings, along with one 1/35 scale plans. This is a concise record of major actions that U.S. Marines were involved in during this period, and readers wanting to learn more about the Battle of Falljah, or simply looking for a collection of Marine photos, will find much of interest here.
