Megan Shockley - The Captain's Widow of Sandwich, Self-Invention and the Life of Hannah Rebecca Burg ess, 1834-1917 (2010).jpg

01 - USA1 - Megan Shockley - The Captains Widow of Sandwich, Self-...nd the Life of Hannah Rebecca Burgess, 1834-1917 2010.jpg

In 1852 Hannah Rebecca Crowell married sea captain William Burgess and set sail. Within three years, Rebecca Burgess had crossed the equator eleven times and learned to navigate a vessel. In 1856, 22-year-old Rebecca saved the ship Challenger as her husband lay dying from dysentery. The widow returned to her family's home in Sandwich, Massachusetts, where she refused all marriage proposals and died wealthy in 1917.
This is the way Burgess recorded her story in her prodigious journals and registers, which she donated to the local historical society upon her death, but there is no other evidence that this dramatic event occurred exactly this way. In The Captain’s Widow of Sandwich, Megan Taylor Shockley examines how Burgess constructed her own legend and how the town of Sandwich embraced that history as its own. Through careful analysis of myriad primary sources, Shockley also addresses how Burgess dealt with the conflicting gender roles of her life, reconciling her traditionally masculine adventures at sea and her independent lifestyle with the accepted ideals of the period’s “Victorian woman.

Stuart A. Scheingold - The Politics of Rights, Law yers, Public Policy, and Political Change (2004).jpg

Stuart A. Scheingold's landmark work introduced a new understanding of the contribution of rights to progressive social movements, and it continues to stand out as a seminal and provocative book bridging political science and sociolegal studies. Since its original publication, a flourishing body of scholarship has been built on the foundations laid in the original volume. In his new preface, the author provides a cogent and constructive analysis of this new scholarship -- which constitutes the legacy of the first edition and the occasion for this thirtieth anniversary second edition. Malcolm Feeley of the Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California, Berkeley, also contributes a new foreword tracing the intellectual roots of The Politics of Rights to the classic texts of social theory and sociolegal studies.

Vince Bell - One Man's Music, The Life and Times o f Texas Songwriter Vince Bell (2009).jpg

Texas singer/songwriter Vince Bell's story begins in the 1970s. Following the likes of Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark, Bell and his contemporaries Lyle Lovett, Nanci Griffith, and Lucinda Williams were on the rise. In December of 1982, Bell was on his way home from the studio (where he and hired guns Stevie Ray Vaughan and Eric Johnson had just recorded three of Bell's songs) when a drunk driver broadsided him at 65 mph. Thrown over 60 feet from his car, Bell suffered multiple lacerations to his liver, embedded glass, broken ribs, a mangled right forearm, and a severe traumatic brain injury. Not only was his debut album waylaid for a dozen years, life as he'd known it would never be the same. In detailing his recovery from the accident and his round-about climb back on stage, Bell shines a light in those dark corners of the music business that, for the lone musician whose success is measured not by the Top 40 but by nightly victories, usually fall outside of the spotlight. Bell's prose is not unlike his lyrics: spare, beautiful, evocative, and often sneak-up-on-you funny. His chronicle of his own life and near death on the road reveals what it means to live for one's art.

Jerry Lembcke - The Spitting Image, Myth, Memory, and the Legacy of Vietnam (1998).jpg

Images of long-haired antiwar protesters, almost always women, spitting on returning Vietnam veterans have become a shameful part of America's collective memory. Lembcke (sociology, Holy Cross Univ.), a member of Vietnam Veterans Against the War, here presents a stunning indictment of this myth?an illusion created, he maintains, by the Nixon-Agnew administration and an unwitting press to attribute America's loss in Vietnam to internal dissension.
In fact, the antiwar movement and many veterans were closely aligned, and the only documented incidents show members of the VFW and American Legion spitting on their less successful Vietnam peers. But Lembcke's most controversial conclusion is that posttraumatic stress disorder was as much a political creation?a means of discrediting returning vets who protested the war as unhinged?as it was a medical condition. The image of the psycho-vet was furthered through such Hollywood productions as The Deer Hunter and Coming Home. This forceful investigation challenges the reader to reexamine assumptions about the dark side of American culture that glorifies war more than peace. Highly recommended for large public libraries and for all academic peace studies collections.?Karl Helicher, Upper Merion Twp. Lib., King of Prussia, PA

Pat Ware - Military Jeep, 1940 onwards (Ford, Will ys and Hotchkiss), Enthusiasts' Manual (2010).jpg

The Jeep was the primary light four-wheel-drive vehicle of the US Army and allies during the Second World War and the post-war period. It was originally designed to meet a 1940 US Army specification, and over 600,000 examples were built in both Ford and Willys forms. The Jeep saw service all over the world, and a healthy number of restored authentic military examples can still be seen today in the hands of enthusiasts. This book provides a brief history of this iconic vehicle, and a fascinating behind-the-scenes insight into what is involved in restoring, operating and maintaining a Jeep today, 70 years after the prototype first appeared.

Russell Jacoby - The Last Intellectuals, American Culture in the Age of Academe, 2nd edition (2000).jpg

This provocative book chronicles the disappearance of the "public intellectual" in America. For over thirty years, the cultural landscape has been dominated by the generation of Irving Howe, Daniel Bell, and John Kenneth Galbraith; no younger group has arisen to succeed them. Unlike earlier intellectuals who lived in urban bohemias and wrote for the educated public, today's thinkers have flocked to the universities, where the politics of tenure loom larger than the politics of culture. In an incisive and passionate polemic, Russell Jacoby examines how gentrification, suburbanization, and academic careerism have sapped the vitality of American intellectual life.

Thomas Carson - Gale Encyclopedia of United States Economic History (2 vol.) (1999).jpg

Targeting a high school and first- and second-year college audience, this easy-to-read work aims at supporting American history textbooks and providing a one- stop-shopping resource on all that comprises U.S. economic history--people, businesses, industries, events, movements, and trends--with a special emphasis on the 19th and 20th centuries. A similar specialized encyclopedia, Glenn Porter's Encyclopedia of American Economic History (Scribner, 1980), now dated, presents lengthier essays on movements and ideas only and is intended for more educated lay readers. In contrast, the Gale source consists of a unique array of 1,003 distinctive entries, somewhat confusing in their sheer variety, alphabetically arranged and of various lengths. Half are brief economic terms and historical and geographical definitions, and the other half are era overviews, issues, biographies, state economic histories, historical events, and company and industry profiles with limited bibliographies.

Michael W. Clune - American Literature and the Fre e Market, 1945-2000 (2010).jpg

The years after World War Two have seen a widespread fascination with the free market. Michael W. Clune considers this fascination in postwar literature. In the fictional worlds created by works ranging from Frank O'Hara's poetry to nineties gangster rap, the market is transformed, offering an alternative form of life, distinct from both the social visions of the left and the individualist ethos of the right. These ideas also provide an unsettling example of how art takes on social power by offering an escape from society. American Literature and the Free Market presents a new perspective on a number of wide ranging works for readers of American post-war literature.

Peter Slade - Open Friendship in a Closed Society, Mission Mississippi and a Theology of Friendship (2009).jpg

Mission Mississippi is the largest interracial ecumenical church-based racial reconciliation group in the United States. Peter Slade offers a sustained examination of whether the Mission's model of racial reconciliation (which stresses one-on-one, individual friendships among religious people of different races) can effectively address the issue of social justice. Slade argues that Mission Mississippi's goal of "changing Mississippi one relationship at a time" is both a pragmatic strategy and a theological statement of hope for social and economic change in Mississippi. Carefully tracing the organization's strategies of biracial church partnerships and sponsorships of large civic events, and intercessory prayer breakfast groups, he concludes that they do indeed offer hope for not only for racial reconciliation but for enabling the mobilization of white economic and social power to benefit broad-based community development. At the same time, he honestly conveys the considerable obstacles to the success of these strategies. Slade's work comes out of the vibrant Lived Theology movement, which looks at the ways theologies go beyond philosophical writings to an embodiment in the grassroots lives of religious people. Drawing on extensive interviews and observations of Mission Mississippi activities, church sources, and theological texts, this book is important not only for scholars of theology and race relations but also Southern studies and religious studies.

Robert Levy, William Mellor - The Dirty Dozen, How Twelve Supreme Court Cases Radically Expanded Gov ernment and Eroded Freedom (2010).jpg

01 - USA1 - Robert Levy, William Mellor - The Dirty Dozen, How Twe... Radically Expanded Government and Eroded Freedom 2010.jpg

Cato Institute senior fellow Levy and lawyer Mellor, in this excellent examination of twelve far-reaching Supreme Court cases and their consequences, force readers to question the direction in which the judiciary has led our country over the past century-and possibly their own attitudes toward the federal government. The authors deftly navigate the complicated proceedings without slipping into lawyer-speak, while unapologetically leaning on their libertarian sentiments to color their commentary and analysis. Though the writers defend well their claim that the dozen cases under discussion-with a number of "dishonorable mentions" and an appendix each for Roe v. Wade and Bush v. Gore-have expanded the federal government and eroded civil liberties, one can't help but feel a creeping sense of arrogance when Levy and Mellor assert repeatedly that they know how the Constitution's authors would view the document were they alive today. Still, the authors' canny investigation into the Supreme Court should call into doubt some of the staid political viewpoints readers may have taken too long for granted.

Scott S. Ellis - Madame Vieux Carré, The French Qu arter in the Twentieth Century (2009).jpg

01 - USA1 - Scott S. Ellis - Madame Vieux Carr, The French Quarter in the Twentieth Century 2009.jpg

Celebrated in media and myth, New Orleans's French Quarter (Vieux Carre) was the original settlement of what became the city of New Orleans. In Madame Vieux Carre, Scott S. Ellis presents the social and political history of this famous district as it evolved from 1900 through the beginning of the twenty-first century.
From the immigrants of the 1910s, to the preservationists of the 1930s, to the nightclub workers and owners of the 1950s and the urban revivalists of the 1990s, Madame Vieux Carre examines the many different people who have called the Quarter home, who have defined its character, and who have fought to keep it from being overwhelmed by tourism's neon and kitsch.
The old French village took on different roles--bastion of the French Creoles, Italian immigrant slum, honky-tonk enclave, literary incubator, working-class community, and tourist playground. The Quarter has been a place of refuge for various groups before they became mainstream Americans.
Although the Vieux Carre has been marketed as a free-wheeling, boozy tourist concept, it exists on many levels for many groups, some with competing agendas. Madame Vieux Carre looks, with unromanticized frankness, at these groups, their intentions, and the future of the South's most historic and famous neighborhood. The author, a former Quarter resident, combines five years of research, personal experience, and unique interviews to weave an eminently readable history of one of America's favorite neighborhoods.

John Temple - The Last Lawyer, The Fight to Save D eath Row Inmates (2009).jpg

For years, lawyer Ken Rose has fought to save wrongly-condemned prisoners; chronicling the story of Rose and death row inmate Bo Jones, author Temple (Dollhouse: Life in a Coroner's Office) finds high drama in Raleigh penitentiaries, North Carolina backroads, cramped law offices, and sweltering courtrooms. Investigators, criminals, judges, witnesses, and attorneys are all finely, vividly drawn in this disturbing account of a justice system hijacked by officials whose prime interest is finding criminals to execute: "Even if Bo Jones wasn't one of the worst of the worst, they pursued him because he was one of the ones they could get." Reviewing the original 1987 murder, the consequent trials and endless hearings, Temple creates an intimate portrait of Rose and his Center for Death Penalty Litigation as they trudge through a decade of work on this case, a typical example that pits the odds and public opinion against them: "To question capital punishment was to appear soft on crime... In court, one well known district attorney sported a golden lapel pin shaped like a hangman's noose." Ultimately, Temple's account is a stand-up-and cheer account of one man standing up for justice.

01 - USA1 - Michael S Lief, H. Mitchell Caldwell - The Devils Advo...ates, Greatest Closing Arguments in Criminal Law 2007.jpg

The Final Volume in a Must-Have Trilogy of the Best Closing Arguments in American Legal History
In The Devil's Advocates, Michael S. Lief and H. Mitchell Caldwell turn to the dramatic crimes and trials of criminal law. The eight famous cases in this riveting collection have set historical precedents and illuminated fundamentals of the American criminal justice system. Future president John Adams illustrates the principle that even the most despised and vilified criminal is entitled to a legal defense in the argument he delivers on behalf of the British soldiers who shot and killed five Americans during the Boston Massacre. Clarence Darrow provides a ringing defense of a black family charged with using deadly force after defending themselves from a violent mob - an argument that refines the concept of self-defense. And perhaps the best-known case is that of Ernesto Miranda, the accused rapist whose trial led to the critically important Miranda decision, which underpins procedure at every criminal arrest.
Each case presented is given legal and cultural context, including a brief historical introduction, biographical sketches of the attorneys involved, highlights of trial testimony, analysis of the closing arguments and a summary of the trial's impact on its participants and our country. In clear, jargon-free prose, the authors make these pivotal cases come to vibrant life for every reader.

01 - USA1 - Albert N. Link, Jamie R. Link - Government as Entrepre... Link, Jamie R. Link - Government as Entrepreneur 2009.jpg

Government acts as entrepreneur when its involvement in market activities is both innovative and characterized by entrepreneurial risk. Thinking of government as entrepreneur is a unique lens through which the authors of this book examine a specific subset of U.S. government policy actions. As such, their viewpoint underscores the purposeful intent of government, its ability to act in new and innovative ways, and its willingness to undertake policy actions that have uncertain outcomes.
Viewing particular policy actions through an entrepreneurial lens is useful in two broad dimensions. First, it underscores the forward looking nature of policy makers as well as the need to evaluate the social outputs and outcomes of their behavior in terms of broad spillover impacts. Second, government acting as entrepreneur parallels in concept similar activities that occur in the private sector.
Government as Entrepreneur is the first broad effort to emphasize the entrepreneurial aspects of governments. It is also the first systematic treatment of U.S. innovation policies to promote the formation of strategic research partnerships. It will foster a new perspective on the role of government and how incentives for government to act entrepreneurially might be institutionalized; it will serve as a vehicle for policy makers and scholars to think about the entrepreneurial actors in an economy, in a new way.
