Trudier Harris - Summer Snow, Reflections from a B lack Daughter of the South (2003).jpg

01 - USA1 - Trudier Harris - Summer Snow, Reflections from a Black Daughter of the South 2003.jpg
A wide-ranging, spirited collection of personal essays about growing up black and Southern
Like Maya Angelou and bell hooks before her, Trudier Harris explores her complicated identity as a black woman in the American South. By turns amusing and probing, Summer Snow lays out in a series of linked essays the formative experiences that shaped Harris into the writer and intellectual she has become.
With passion and eloquence, Harris writes about the creation of her unique first name, how porch-sitting is in fact a creative Southern tradition, and how insecurities over her black hair ("the ubiquitous hair") factored into her self-image. She writes about being a "black nerd" as a child, and how the black church influenced her in her early years. But she also writes about more troubling topics, such as the price blacks have paid for integration, and the "staying power of racism." In one moving piece, Harris remembers a white teenager propositioning her for sex in exchange for five dollars. Unflinching in her assessment of white Southern culture, yet deeply attached to a South
many black intellectuals have abandoned, Harris in Summer Snow takes readers on a surprising tour of one woman"s life, loves, and lessons.
Trudier Harris is the author of numerousbooks, including Saints, Sinners, Saviors: Strong Black Women in African American Literature and Fiction and Folklore: The Novels of Toni Morrison. She is currently a professor of English at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Concord - Armor At War 7044 - Steven J. Zakoga - U S Armoured Artillery in World War II m (2002).jpg

01 - USA1 - Concord - Armor At War 7044 - Steven J. Zakoga - US Armoured Artillery in World War II m 2002.jpg
Determined to learn from the lessons of World War I where it was unprepared and heavily reliant on British and French guns, the US Army developed a whole new generation of field artillery weapons and tactics during the 1930s. Consequently, in World War II it was the clear leader in field artillery.

Providing a thorough examination of the many critical innovations and doctrines, and the impact they had on performance in combat, this book demonstrates why US field artillery was so effective in World War II. Innovations featured include the motorization of artillery, which increased mobility; fire direction centers, which enhanced their firepower; aerial observation; and radio communications.

Exploring, in their entirety, the weapons that formed the backbone of the US artillery arsenal in World War II, this book reveals a wealth of detail not readily available elsewhere.

Cristina Montes - Los Angeles Houses (2001).jpg

01 - USA1 - Cristina Montes - Los Angeles Houses 2001.jpg
Architecture is perhaps not the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Los Angeles, but there’s no doubt that the city has its own unique style. Large in scale, its rolling, densely lit nightscape suggests the pockets of heavy population that spread out from downtown. In fact, most people from LA don’t actually live there, but in a suburb.

The result of all this suburban living is a hugely diverse residential area with spectacular houses in the hills and canyons, surrounded by trees and stunning views of the city. This book examines some of the highlights of domestic living around Los Angeles, and points out some of the major influences: Art Deco, Spanish, and contemporary architecture; spacious, light-filled rooms; and plenty of wood, steel and concrete. It examines how the city’s flamboyant past has shaped the landscape, as well as how cutting-edge architects and interior designers continue to create exciting new styles and structures. Acclaimed architects such as Richard Meier are featured here along with firms such as Bobrow Thomas & Associates, Legorreta and Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer Associates. Filled with photographs, floor plans, sketches, and informative text, this collection of stunning houses proves that the City of Angels is making its mark in the world of home design.

In this biography, commissioned by the Disciples of Christ Historical Society, D. Duane Cummins crafts a picture of a remarkable church leader and chronicles the way a significant religious body dealt with the ambivalences of its own existence.
This biography of one of the most significant twentieth-century figures in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) recounts his childhood in a devout family, his training for the ministry, and his impact not only on his denomination but on American Protestantism in general, particularly its approach to such social issues as missionary work and civil rights.

Douglas R. Porter - Managing Growth in America's C ommunities (1997).jpg

01 - USA1 - Douglas R. Porter - Managing Growth in Americas Communities 1997.jpg
Communities across the country are turning to the concept of "growth management" to help plan for the future, as they seek to control the location, impact, character and timing of development in order to balance environmental and economic needs and concerns. Managing Growth in America's Communities presents practical information about proven strategies, programs and techniques of growth management for urban and rural communities. Topics examined include:

* public roles in community development
* determining locations and character of future development
* protecting environmental and natural resources
* managing infrastructure development
* preserving community character and quality
* achieving economic and social goals
* property rights concerns

The author describes regulatory and programmatic techniques that have been most useful, obstacles to be overcome, and specific strategies that have been instrumental in achieving successful growth management programs. He provides examples from dozens of communities across the country as well as state and regional approaches currently in use. Brief profiles present overviews of problems addressed, techniques implemented, outcomes, and contact information for conducting further research. Among the communities profiled are Arlington County, Virginia; Fort Collins, Colorado; Lexington-Fayette County, Kentucky; Lincoln, Nebraska; Sarasota, Florida; Raleigh, North Carolina; Scottsdale, Arizona; and numerous others. Also included in the volume are informational sidebars written by leading experts in growth management including Robert Yaro, John DeGrove, David Brower, and others.

Managing Growth in America's Communities is essential reading for community development specialists including government officials, planners, environmentalists, designers, developers, business people, and concerned citizens seeking innovative and feasible ways to manage growth.

01 - USA1 - Katherine Pandora - Rebels within the Ranks, Psycholog...rity and Democratic Realities in New Deal America 1997.jpg
This book examines the work of social and personality psychologists who, in the 1930s, criticized the increasingly restrictive vision of scientific life being promoted by neobehaviorist social scientists. This critique has been overlooked by historians who have concentrated on the rise of neobehaviorism, rather than the challenges advanced by such "rebels within the ranks" as Gordon Allport, Gardner Murphy, and Lois Barclay Murphy. All three contributed to ongoing public and professional debates about democracy and the authority of scientific knowledge in New Deal America.

Keller Easterling - Organization Space, Landscapes , Highways, and Houses in America (1999).jpg

01 - USA1 - Keller Easterling - Organization Space, Landscapes, Highways, and Houses in America 1999.jpg
"In its innovations of form, its depth of research, its acute analysis, and its enormous relevance, this is a remarkable work. Keller Easterling has written one of the most original works about the American environment I've ever read." -- Michael Sorkin, architect, Institute for Urbanism, Vienna

The dominant architectures in our culture of development consist of generic protocols for building offices, airports, houses, and highways. For Keller Easterling these organizational formats are not merely the context of design efforts--they are the design. Bridging the gap between architecture and infrastructure, Easterling views architecture as part of an ecology of interrelationships and linkages, and she treats the expression of organizational character as part of the architectural endeavor.

Easterling also makes the case that these organizational formats are improvisational and responsive to circumstantial change, to mistakes, anomalies, and seemingly illogical market forces. By treating these irregularities opportunistically, she offers architects working within the customary development protocols new sites for making and altering space.

By showing the reciprocal relations between systems of thinking and modes of designing, Easterling establishes unexpected congruencies between natural and built environments, virtual and physical systems, highway and communication networks, and corporate and spatial organizations. She frames her unconventional notion of site not in terms of singular entities, but in terms of relationships between multiple sites that are both individually and collectively adjustable.

Kirstin Miller - Village Bottoms Cultural District at Pine Street (2009).jpg

01 - USA1 - Kirstin Miller - Village Bottoms Cultural District at Pine Street 2009.jpg
The purpose of this pilot application is to demonstrate an ecologically, economically and culturally sustainable approach to addressing climate change through land use and transportation planning. The pilot proposes a regional and integrated approach to transitioning from the current land- and energy-intensive patterns of urban sprawl and automobile dependence, towards compact, pedestrian- and transit-oriented communities linked by transit, trails and greenways, and restored natural corridors. Urban Villages offer residents convenience and cost savings, thanks to access by proximity to everyday retail, services, jobs, transportation, and recreational needs. The approach focuses on creating thriving local economies, decreasing the need for commuting and for long distance transport of goods and materials. The model can be adapted to other Bay Area cities, helping the region reduce greenhouse gas emissions through reductions in vehicle miles traveled and land use planning, as mandated by SB 375 and AB 32.

Peter Calthorpe, William Fulton - The Regional Cit y (2001).jpg

01 - USA1 - Peter Calthorpe, William Fulton - The Regional City 2001.jpg
Most Americans today do not live in discrete cities and towns, but rather in an aggregation of cities and suburbs that forms one basic economic, multi-cultural, environmental and civic entity. These "regional cities" have the potential to significantly improve the quality of our lives-to provide interconnected and diverse economic centers, transportation choices, and a variety of human-scale communities. In The Regional City, two of the most innovative thinkers in the field of land use planning and design offer a detailed look at this new metropolitan form and explain how regional-scale planning and design can help direct growth wisely and reverse current trends in land use. The authors:

* discuss the nature and underpinnings of this new metropolitan form
* present their view of the policies and physical design principles required for metropolitan areas to transform themselves into regional cities
* document the combination of physical design and social and economic policies that are being used across the country
* consider the main factors that are shaping metropolitan regions today, including the maturation of sprawling suburbs and the renewal of urban neighborhoods

Featuring full-color graphics and in-depth case studies, The Regional Cityoffers a thorough examination of the concept of regional planning along with examples of successful initiatives from around the country. It will be must reading for planners, architects, landscape architects, local officials, real estate developers, community development professionals, and for students in architecture, urban planning, and policy.

Philip Jodidio - Richard Meier (1996).jpg

01 - USA1 - Philip Jodidio - Richard Meier 1996.jpg
This new title in the Modern Masters series is dedicated to the distinguished American architect, and includes an introductory essay by Kenneth Frampton, one of the most prestigious names in the field of architecture history. This complete monograph presents 89 of Meier's buildings, documenting the principal stages of Meier's career in chronological order, from his early private homes and residential buildings - such as the two large complexes of Twin Parks, Bronx, New York, and the Bronx Development Center - to recent major projects in the United States and in several European countries, including Italy. Among the well-known works in this volume are the Getty Center in Los Angeles, the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art, and the church of Dives in Misericordia, Rome. In the early 1970s, Meier was one of the "New York Five," an informal group of East Coast architects who shared a preference for new and original contributions to the modern tradition and shaped an alternative to the "gray" architecture that dominated highrise East Coast buildings at the time.
