"L'uomo, la donna e la bestia" is what one could call an avant-garde film - it has something of Pasolini and of the Buñuel of "Un chien andalou".

The film begins in black and white. A man is watching a gravestone. On the gravestone there's a photo - it's his own photo. We see some images in black and white. An image of a woman. B&w turns into colors. The woman moves.

The man who was staring at the gravestone is a communist in crisis (but he's not a wife-beater as another reviewer wrote). He doesn't know anymore if his ideology has any use or reality at all. What is truth? But he still hangs on to his icons: photos of Lenin, the hammer & sickle etc.. His wife is a mentally disturbed woman that can be sometimes very aggressive.

We are in a small town in Italy. People are preparing themselves for the feast for the town's patron saint. The film feels natural: Little boys running around selling drawings of saints. The priest organizing the procession. Boys meeting girls at the town's main square etc... You don't feel that you're watching a film. I had almost the feeling of being there.

The Other Side of the Underneath (1972).avi

Jane Arden's violent and powerful adaptation of her work with the Holocaust women's theatre troupe looks into the mind of a woman labelled schizophrenic and finds, not madness, but tortured sexual guilt created by the taboos of society.

Juxtaposing visions of personal hell with group psychotherapy sessions presided over by Jane Arden herself, "The Other Side of the Underneath" is an unsettling experience and provides an illustration of the idea that insanity is a kind of death that must be followed by rebirth. The terrifying fantasy sequences are utterly convincing images of madness from the inside and convey the depair and destitution of a personality that has been fragmented.

Beautiful Teacher in Torture Hell (1985).avi

Beautiful Teacher in Torture Hell is a fun and sleazy romp that brings a little more originality in terms of storyline to the table than the average pinku torture-fest. The concept is decent with a few twists, though towards the middle of the film, it reverts back into the normal bondage-type material that is so prevalent in the genre...

A new teacher is brought to a school where she is bullied and raped by some local toughs. When the teacher saves the school director's grand-daughter from some abuse at the hands of the bullies, the director invites her over for dinner as a "thank-you". Turns out, he's actually the mastermind of a ring that abuses new teachers and turns them into sex-slaves. The ring includes not only the director, but other teachers, the bullies, and even the janitor...

The first half of Beautiful Teacher in Torture Hell is pretty original and plays out almost as a sleazy mystery - until we find out exactly what's going on - and then we get the requisite tortures at the hands of the school director and others. Basic rape/bondage material on display with none of the scenes being extremely noteworthy. One scene where the teacher is enemized then forced to sit in an aquarium until she "releases" is kinda novel.

Post coitum (2004).avi

People get into a strange state of mind after orgasm. They laugh at things which they would have killed for moments before and say things they normally wouldn't say ...
The nine characters in our film experience this many times due to the mathematic result of four men times five women. This then occurs exactly twenty times. A sequence of mini episodes arises which run into a single tale of love, conspirational relationships and sex.
In their various combinations our heroes hop in and out of the beds which will affect their lives in ways which they never could have believed. The nine different characters and their various needs and desires unleash onto the screen a story which initially seems like a comic farce, but which gradually runs chills down ones spine. The viewer both loves and hates them at the same time as everyone can find a moment in the film in which they recognise themselves.

Avere vent'anni (1978) aka To Be Twenty.mkv

"To Be Twenty" is a highly watchable story about two twenty-year-old free spirits whose youth and naivety bring on their destruction. Ninety per cent of the film graphically depicts the girls in a series of wild and frivolous adventures. Staples of 70's cinema such as drugs, politics, the generation gap, communal living and free sex are thrown into a mix to produce an enjoyable cinematic cocktail that captures the ennui of the period.

The film's surprising last stanza sounds a mean-spirited warning to women who freely advertise their sexuality without any intention of providing it. It is a nihilistic, barbaric, angry scene of human carnage that echoes the darkest aspects of "Last House on the Left", "Straw Dogs" and "I Spit On Your Grave".

A recurring song is used to potent effect over the end credits and the lead characters are brought to vivid life by the talented Guida and Carati.

Lo Squartatore di New York (1982) aka The New York Ripper (uncut version) Postrach Nowego Jorku.avi

"The New York Ripper" to zdecydowanie najbardziej kontrowersyjny film w karierze włoskiego mistrza gore Lucio Fulci’ego. Już w momencie swej kinowej premiery wywołał gwałtowne protesty wśród widzów zniesmaczonych niezwykle bezkompromisowym ukazaniem przemocy wobec kobiet. Oczywiście Fulci umieszczał wyjątkowo krwawe sceny gore we wcześniejszych horrorach, ale w przypadku "Lo Squartatore di New York" brakuje owej "fantastycznej" otoczki widocznej chociażby w "The Beyond" czy "City of the Living Dead", która czyniła przemoc tam ukazaną nieco łatwiejszą do przetrawienia. "The New York Ripper" pod względem okrucieństwa może z powodzeniem stanąć w szranki z tak brutalnymi giallos jak "Giallo a Venezia" (1979) oraz "The Killer Is Still Among Us" (1986).

A Erva do Rato (2008) aka The Herb of the Rat - Sz czurze ziele.avi

Filmmaker Julio Bressane presents a gently surreal exploration of love and eros in this drama adapted from a pair of short stories by Machado de Assis. A nameless man (Selton Mello) and woman (Alessandra Negrini) meet while they're visiting a cemetery. When the woman trips and falls, the man comes to her rescue, and when he learns she has nowhere to go, he invites her back to his home. While she rests and drinks tea with him, he persuades her to allow him to photograph her in the nude. However, a mouse becomes fascinated with the photographs and in turn teaches the woman an unexpected lesson about eroticism. The man fancies himself an author, and to help him with his latest project, she agrees to take dictation as he spins an unusual tale. As it happens, the story is also unusually long, and in time the manuscript threatens to take over their lives as well as his house. The Herb Of The Rat (aka A Ervo do Rato) was an official selection at the 2008 Venice Film Festival.

The Thrushes Are Still Singing (1979) Ta kourelia tragoudane akoma.avi

Nikos Nikolaidis is a director unlike any other, here in Greece. His uncompromised, simple & cynical dialogues, his beautiful photography, extremity and obscenity, his weird "black" humour and somewhat ever present surrealism, all these make him my greatest. Greek cinema generally hasn't had many great moments for many reasons. Nikos Nikolaidis, uncompromised and unwilling to play "the big game" which he has been offered as a mainstream intellectual, for 30 years now and going he has been making powerful & controversial films that deserve more attention from serious cinema fans (both those who like the intellect and those who like it strange & bizarre!

"Ta kurelia tragudane akoma" , his second feature, a hymn to friendship & companion ship, is both cruel and funny, cynical and sweet, about people who have lost all hopes, a surreal tribute to the hopeless and pessimist 'betrayed' people. Neverless the film doesn't ever gets slow and remains quite unpredictable and interesting. All texts in Nikolaidis films are perhaps his best point.

This is a film that would probably be regarded as not appropriate for minors: while Nikolaidis doesn't glorify violence, there seem not to be any visible ethics or morality in his films, another reason he is regarded by some as 'anarchist' and 'angry' director.

Mocne Erotyki - Shjo 2001 Aka An Adolescent.avi

A Casa (1997) aka The House.mkv

The House (1997) opens to the image of a mansion as the narrator reads a confessional letter written to his mother about their inability to communicate with each other. The house and mother are, of course, metaphors for the motherland that would be explored in the two hours that follow. It seems to me that The House is the film that Bartas finally comes to terms with the trauma dealt by the country
