101 Strings

Wraz z rozwojem muzyki easy listening (wśród jej przedstawicieli znaleźli się Mantovani i Jackie Gleason Presents), Miller zlecił Orchester des Nordwestdeutschen Rundfunks Hamburg (Północno-Zachodnioniemieckiej Orkiestrze Radiowej w Hamburgu) pod dyrekcją Wilhelma Stephana wykonanie autorskich aranżacji popularnych standardów. Pierwsze trzy albumy 101 Strings ukazały się w listopadzie 1957 roku, a dwanaście kolejnych tytułów ukazało się w 1958 roku (wiele z nich zawierało materiał z recyklingu z wcześniejszych albumów przypisywanych New World Orchestra, Rio Carnival Orchestra i innym orkiestrom muzyki rozrywkowej). Płyty te były tłoczone w zakładach Millera i dystrybuowane za pośrednictwem jego własnych kanałów dystrybucji (takich jak sklepy spożywcze).

Jego głównymi aranżerami byli Monty Kelly, Joseph Francis Kuhn i Robert Lowden. Wszyscy trzej okazali się mistrzami w pisaniu oryginalnych kompozycji, stylistycznie spójnych zarówno ze współczesnymi przebojami, jak i ze sobą nawzajem. Miller umieścił je na albumach 101 Strings, aby zapewnić sobie dodatkowe przychody z wydawnictw.

Najwcześniejsze sukcesy Kelly'ego to latynoskie i hiszpańskie dzienniki podróżnicze (takie jak seria „Soul of Spain”), choć po brytyjskiej inwazji stał się specjalistą od „Now Sound” w wytwórni 101 Strings. Kuhn skoncentrował się na radiowych utworach w orkiestrowym stylu „Pops” („Blues Pizzicato” itp.), które zapewniły Somersetowi początkowy katalog oryginalnych utworów. Lowden komponował ballady lounge (takie jak „Blue Twilight”). Dorobek orkiestry z początku lat 60., w tym nagrania pod szyldami Cinema Sound Stage Orchestra i Zero Zero Seven Band, był reedytowany w ciągu następnych dwudziestu lat.

Sherman i 101 Strings
W 1964 roku Miller sprzedał franczyzę Alowi Shermanowi, odnoszącemu sukcesy dystrybutorowi płyt, który zmienił nazwę wytwórni na Alshire (z siedzibą w Los Angeles) i przeniósł nagrania do Londynu. Sherman zatrudnił Millera jako partnera do nadzorowania produkcji i A&R. Wiele albumów 101 Strings to po prostu orkiestrowe wersje przebojów pop i melodii z musicali, chociaż wczesny materiał Somerset zawiera wiele przykładów gatunków egzotycznych i lounge. „East of Suez” (1959), „In a Hawaiian Paradise” (1960) i „Songs of the Seasons in Japan” (1964) to trzy takie albumy. „101 Strings Play the Blues” (1958) i „Back Beat Symphony” były wczesnymi eksperymentami w hybrydyzacji symfonii i popu, a „Fly Me to the Moon” (1961) zawiera pięć oryginalnych utworów w klimacie noir.
