His works include: The Yankees of the East, Sketches of Modern Japan (1896), Modern India (1905), The Turk and His Lost Provinces, To-day in Syria and Palestine, Egypt, Burma and British Malaysia and United States to Dominate the Hemisphere.

Preface
Von Moltke, the great German soldier, predicted that a universal war would be fought under the walls of Constantinople. He had faith that the Christian Powers of Europe, sooner or later, would compel the Turks to respect their moral, political, and financial obligations. This would have been done years ago but for the jealousy of those Powers, and the thousands of innocent Macedonians who have been massacred and the hundreds of thousands who have suffered from Turkish cruelty are the victims of that jealousy. The Czar would intervene, but England, France, Austria, and Germany will not permit him to do so for fear Russia will obtain a port upon the Mediterranean. At intervals the uprisings in Macedonia have indicated the approach of hostilities. They have grown more frequent and serious until, as this little book goes to press, Russia and Austria have demanded a better government for Macedonia, and the Sultan has responded by ordering 250,000 Turkish troops into that province. Diplomatic negotiations and empty assurances may again avert war, but every sign indicates that Von Moltke's prophecy is soon to be fulfilled. The purpose of this publication is to give English readers a few facts about the several "buffer-states" of the Balkan Peninsula which cannot be elsewhere obtained. It is the result of a journey through that peninsula as correspondent of The Chicago Record-Herald, and although the author realizes that it is defective and incomplete, he is confident that the American public will appreciate his efforts to give them the timely information it contains.

This book was originally published in 1900. Clowes was the naval correspondent for The Times. While he wrote much of the book, other sections were written by Sir Clements Markham, a retired admiral and President of the Royal Geographical Society; Alfred Thayer Mahan, author of the seminal "Influence of Seapower Upon History"; and Theodore Roosevelt, who wrote what is still considered one of the best histories of the War of 1812; among others.

Unusually for military histories, the book looks at other aspects of the Royal Navy besides naval operations. There are several long discussions of naval administration, shipbuilding, and even social life and customs of the sea. Markham's sections are concerned with exploration, which involved more than James Cook's voyages.

Written in modern English, this hundred-plus year old book is readable and still relevant. My only regret upon finishing it was that Clowes didn't live in the present time, so he could have brought the book up to date.

Karen Barkey is professor of sociology and history at Columbia University. The Sultan Speaks is the first study of English historical plays about the Turks in relation to their sources and analogues, including histories originating in Greek, Arabic, and Turkish. Drawing on Bakhtin’s concept of the dialogic and on narrative theory, McJannet traces the transmission of these eastern sources and analyzes Richard Knolles’s citation of the “Turks’ own chronicles,” the historiographic equivalent of letting the sultan speak. She demonstrates that while the historians increasingly contain the sultan’s words with adverse authorial commentary, playwrights such as Marlowe and Fulke Greville use both dialogue and commentary to enhance the sultan’s stature and to mitigate his negative acts.

Linda McJannet, Professor of English at Bentley College, was educated at Wellesley College and Harvard University. Her work on the East in early modern drama has appeared in journals such as Medieval and Renaissance Drama in England and in the collection Playing the Globe: Genre and Geography in English Renaissance Drama (1998). She is also the author of The Voice of Elizabethan Stage Directions: The Evolution of a Theatrical Code (1999).
