In her own day, Ana Pauker was named "The Most Powerful Woman in the World" by Time magazine. Today, when she is remembered at all, she is thought of as the puppet of Soviet communism in Romania, blindly enforcing the most brutal and repressive Stalinist regime. Robert Levy's new biography changes the picture dramatically, revealing a woman of remarkable strength, dominated by conflict and contradiction far more than by dogmatism. Telling the story of Pauker's youth in an increasingly anti-Semitic environment, her commitment to a revolutionary career, and her rise in the Romanian Communist movement, Levy makes no attempt to whitewash Pauker's life and actions, but rather explores every contour of the complicated persona he found expressed in masses of newly accessible archival documents.

Deborah A. Kaple - Dream of a Red Factory, The Leg acy of High Stalinism in China (1994).jpg

Drawing on previously unknown primary sources in both Chinese and Russian, Deborah A. Kaple has written a powerful and absorbing account of the model of factory management and organization that the Chinese communists formulated in the 1949-1953 period. She reveals that their "new" management techniques were adapted from Soviet propaganda during the harsh period of Stalin's post-war reconstruction. The idealized Stalinist management system consisted mainly of strict Communist Party control of all aspects of workers' lives, which is the root of such strong Party control over Chinese society today. Dream of a Red Factory is a rare and revealing look at the consolidation rule in China; told through the prism of the development of new "socialist" factories and enterprises. Kaple completely counters the old myth of the "Soviet monolith" in China, and carefully reconstructs how the Chinese communists came to rely on an idealized, propagandistic version of the Soviet model instead.

Osprey - Warrior 135 - Gordon L. Rottman - North Vietnamese Army Soldier 1958-75 (2009).jpg

Commonly mistaken for the locally raised Viet Cong, the NVA was an entirely different force, conducting large-scale operations in a conventional war. Despite limited armour, artillery and air support, the NVA were an extremely politicized and professional force with strict control measures and leadership concepts. Gordon Rottman follows the fascinating life of the highly motivated infantryman from conscription and induction through training to real combat experiences. Covering the evolution of the forces from 1958 onwards, this book takes an in-depth look at the civilian and military lives of the soldiers, whilst accompanying artwork details the uniforms, weapons and equipment used by the NVA in their clash against America and her allies.

John C. Davenport - The Bolshevik Revolution (2010 ).jpg

It was a revolution that would change the world by bringing about the global transition from capitalism to communism in a single generation—or so its supporters believed. Vladimir Lenin and the Bolshevik Party hoped to carry humanity into a new day of equality, justice, and freedom. Toward this end, they brought down the Russian tsarist government in October 1917 and began a vast political experiment that ended more than 70 years later in a way neither Lenin nor his followers would have ever anticipated. The Bolshevik Revolution not only marked the end of Old Russia, but it also set in motion a chain of events that would create a rivalry between the East and West that defined the second half of the 20th century. In The Bolshevik Revolution, learn about the key players and events of this tumultuous time in Russian history.

Jonathan Harris - The Split in Stalin's Secretaria t, 1939-1948 (2008).jpg

This book attempts to demonstrate that the leaders of Stalin's Secretariat clashed sharply and continuously over the nature of the Communist party's leadership of the Soviet state between 1939 and 1948. This study reconceptualizes the entire question of party-state relations in the SSR's political system and therefore provides an original interpretation of a critical period in the development of the Stalinist political system.

Susan Muaddi Darraj - The Collapse of the Soviet U nion (2010).jpg

The dissolution of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics on December 31, 1991, stunned the world. The communist empire--which had been a dominant force in global politics for 74 years, influencing world events from World War II to issues of nuclear weapons and defense--was suddenly gone. The Collapse of the Soviet Union highlights major events in Soviet history, such as the rise of communism in Russia, the terror and expansionist policies of Joseph Stalin, the election of Mikhail Gorbachev, the explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear reactor, and the rivalry between Gorbachev and Boris Yeltsin as a new democratic Russia emerged from the ashes of the Soviet Union.

David Marples - Motherland, Russia in the Twentiet h Century (2002).jpg

* 20th century Russia is a colourful and dynamic story from Lenin's Revolution, the murder of the Romanovs, Stalin's gulags through to perestroika and glasnost
* Provides the background to the events that we saw and read about on TV and in the newspapers – the Chechen War; Yeltsin turning back the tanks outside the Russian parliament, etc.
* Russia is still in confusing state of flux politically and economically – this book unravels the chaos
* Offers particularly strong and original sections on nationalism and ethnicity
* Focuses on psychological indoctrination and how a country can become a cult
Motherland tells the dramatic story of the rise and fall of the Soviet Union. From Lenin's virtual coup in November 1917 to Boris Yeltsin's ruthless takeover of power in 1991, the book culminates with a new view of the Yeltsin years.
David Marples focuses on the evolution of Russia during the Soviet period, and the attempt to harness Russian nationalism to the avowed Soviet mission of promoting World Communism. Along the way heanalyses some of the more intensive historical debates and uncovers some of the myths perpetuated by state propaganda, especially those associated with the Great Patriotic War.
David Marples is Professor of History at the University of Alberta. He is the author of eight previous books on Russia and the Soviet Union and has a particular interest in the issue of nationalities. He served as a regular consultant on Soviet issues to the governments of Canada and the USA and is uniquely placed to write the definitive account of modern Russia.

The Modern Scholar - David S. Painter - Cold War, On the Brink of Apocalypse (2005).jpg

The devastating US atomic bombing of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki not only brought World War II to an end, but effectively gave birth to the Cold War. The postwar world would thereafter be marked by the fragile relationship of two superpowers with opposing ideologies: the United States and the Soviet Union.
For forty-five years, these two superpowers would vie for supremacy in world politics. The Cold War, defined by events such as the Cuban Missile Crisis, turmoil in the Third World, and the arms race, held the potential for an apocalyptic confrontation that could have spelled doom for the human race. Understanding the Cold War, with all of its far-reaching, global implications, is absolutely essential to our understanding of the history of the second half of the twentieth century and beyond.

Nigel West, Oleg Tsarev - TRIPLEX, Secrets from th e Cambridge Spies (2009).jpg

TRIPLEX reveals more clearly than ever before the precise nature and extent of the damage done to the much-vaunted British intelligence establishment during World War II by the notorious “Cambridge Five” spy ring—Kim Philby, Donald Maclean, Guy Burgess, Anthony Blunt, and John Cairncross. The code word TRIPLEX refers to an exceptionally sensitive intelligence source, one of the most closely guarded secrets of the war, which appears nowhere in any of the British government’s official histories. TRIPLEX was material extracted illicitly from the diplomatic pouches of neutral missions in wartime London. MI5, the British Security Service, entrusted the job of overseeing the highly secret assignment to Anthony Blunt, who was already working for the NKVD, Stalin’s intelligence service. The rest is history, documented here for the first time in rich detail.

Oleg V. Khlevniuk, Nora Seligman Favorov - Master of the House, Stalin and His Inner Circle (2008).jpg

Based on meticulous research in previously unavailable documents in the Soviet archives, this compelling book illuminates the secret inner mechanisms of power in the Soviet Union during the years when Stalin established his notorious dictatorship. Oleg V. Khlevniuk focuses on the top organ in Soviet Russia’s political hierarchy of the 1930s—the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party—and on the political and interpersonal dynamics that weakened its collective leadership and enabled Stalin’s rise.

Khlevniuk’s unparalleled research challenges existing theories of the workings of the Politburo and uncovers many new findings regarding the nature of alliances among Politburo members, Sergei Kirov’s murder, the implementation of the Great Terror, and much more. The author analyzes Stalin’s mechanisms of generating and retaining power and presents a new understanding, unmatched in texture and depth, of the highest tiers of the Communist Party in a crucial era of Soviet history.

Jr., Ralph A. Thaxton - Catastrophe and Contention in Rural China, Mao's Great Leap Forward Famine a nd the Origins of Righteous Resistance in Da Fo Vi llage (2008).jpg

Communism - Books - Jr., Ralph A. Thaxton - Catastrophe and Contention...gins of Righteous Resistance in Da Fo Village 2008.jpg

This book documents how China's rural people remember the great famine of Maoist rule, which proved to be the worst famine in modern world history. Ralph A. Thaxton, Jr., sheds new light on how China's socialist rulers drove rural dwellers to hunger and starvation, on how powerless villagers formed resistance to the corruption and coercion of collectivization, and on how their hidden and contentious acts, both individual and concerted, allowed them to survive and escape the predatory grip of leaders and networks in the thrall of Mao's authoritarian plan for a full-throttle realization of communism - a plan that engendered an unprecedented disaster for rural families. Based on his study of a rural village's memories of the famine, Thaxton argues that these memories persisted long after the events of the famine and shaped rural resistance to the socialist state, both before and after the post-Mao era of reform.

Pierre F. Landry - Decentralized Authoritarianism in China, The Communist Party's Control of Local E lites in the Post-Mao Era (2008).jpg

Communism - Books - Pierre F. Landry - Decentralized Authoritarianism ...s Control of Local Elites in the Post-Mao Era 2008.jpg

China, like many authoritarian regimes, struggles with the tension between the need to foster economic development by empowering local officials and the regime’s imperative to control them politically. Landry explores how the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) manages local officials in order to meet these goals and perpetuate an unusually decentralized authoritarian regime. Using unique data collected at the municipal, county, and village level, Landry examines in detail how the promotion mechanisms for local cadres have allowed the CCP to reward officials for the development of their localities without weakening political control. His research shows that the CCP’s personnel management system is a key factor in explaining China’s enduring authoritarianism and proves convincingly that decentralization and authoritarianism can work hand in hand.

Jacques Bidet - Exploring Marx's Capital, Philosop hical, Economic and Political Dimensions (2002).jpg

This book, originally published in French under the title Que faire du Capital?, offers a new interpretation of Marx's great work. It shows how the novelty and lasting interest of Marx's theory arises from the fact that, as against the project of a `pure' economics, it is formulated in concepts that have simultaneously an economic and a political aspect, neither of these being separable from the other. Jacques Bidet conducts an unprecedented investigation of Marx's work in the spirit of the history of science, exploring it as a process of theoretical development. Traditional exegesis reads the successive drafts of Capital as if they were complementary and mutually illuminated one another. In actual fact, like any scientist, Marx only wrote a new version in order to correct the previous one. He started from ideas borrowed from Ricardo and Hegel, and between one draft and the next it is possible to see these being eliminated and restructured. This labour, moreover, was never fully completed. The author thus re-assesses Marx's entire system in its set of constitutive categories: value, market, labour-power, classes, working class, exploitation, production, fetishism, ideology. He seeks to pin down the difficulties that these encountered, and the analytical and critical value they still have today. Bidet attaches the greatest importance to Marx's order of exposition, which assigns each concept its place in the overall system, and makes the validity of the construction depend on the pertinence of its initial presuppositions. This is particularly the case with the relationship between market mechanism and capitalism - and thus also between the market and socialism.
