01 - USA - Concord - Armor 7052 - Steven J. Zaloga - US armored f...US specialized armored vehicles in the ETO in WW2 2005.jpg

Any buff of WWII armored vehicles will be well aware of the Ą§FunniesĄ¨ designed by the British, particularly those employed by the 79th Armoured Division from D-Day onwards. Yet the USA was a prodigious designer and user of specialized armored vehicles as well. This was especially true in the areas of tank recovery vehicles and armored engineer vehicles.

Steve Zaloga, a prolific writer with an unsurpassed knowledge of American military vehicles, has put together a collection of photos of these U.S. Ą§FunniesĄ¨. The focus is on the European Theater of Operations (ETO), which includes Italy and Northwest Europe. The USA tended to sprinkle its specialist tanks throughout regular tank battalions, rather than create specialized divisions. The fascinating array of black and white photos offer a detailed look at a whole host of vehicle types, and insightful captions explain the subject matter. The book also includes sixteen high quality computer generated color plates that have also been produced by the author.

This volume begins with the following vehicles: M31 and M32 tank recovery vehicles; M33 and M35 prime movers; Shermans fitted with dozer blades; DD amphibious tanks, as well as Shermans fitted with wading stacks. The book continues on with bridgelayers and treadway layers in action, then mine clearing tanks. As the book progresses towards the end, there are detailed sections on flamethrower and rocket launcher tanks. Last but not least are the top secret Ą§LeafletĄ¨ and Ą§sonicĄ¨ tanks. Each type of vehicle receives a detailed yet concise summary of its history, development and use in the introductory text.

This is an engrossing book, and it covers a category of vehicles that have not been well represented in print before. When combined with the penmanship of one of the leading military history and modeling exponents in the world, this is a Ą§FunniesĄŚ book that any enthusiast would be funny to miss!

Carol Lancaster - George Bush's Foreign Aid, Trans formation or Chaos (2008).jpg

Over the past seven years, the Bush administration has launched a revolution in U.S. foreign aid. At no time since the administration of President Kennedy have there been more changes in the volume of aid, in aid's purposes and policies, in its organization, and in its overall status in U.S. foreign relations. George Bush's Foreign Aid: Transformation or Chaos? analyzes in detail the array of recent reforms of U.S. economic assistance and the difficult issues these reforms raise, while placing the changes and the manner of their implementation in a historical and political context. Lancaster draws out the challenges and opportunities this transformation of U.S. aid offer for the next administration to engage the emerging world of the 21st century.

Bruce B. G. Clarke - Expendable Warriors, The Batt le of Khe Sanh and the Vietnam War (2007).jpg

The battle of Khe Sanh was won and the Vietnam war was lost at the same time. Expendable Warriors describes at multiple levels the soldiers and marines who were expendable in the American political chaos of Vietnam, 1968. On January 21, 1968, nine days before the Tet offensive, tens of thousands of North Vietnamese regulars began the attacks on the Khe Sanh plateau, which led to the siege of the Khe Sanh Combat Base. For those with a vivid memory of the Vietnam war, there is consolation in knowing that the impact of that war altered and shaped politics and warfare for the next generations. But in that altering we must take the lessons and apply them to new situations, new challenges and new policy dilemmas. To fail to do so would mean that the warriors at Khe Sanh and all of Vietnam were truly expendable, The battle of Khe Sanh was won and the Vietnam war was lost at the same time. David Callahan - Fortunes of Change, The Rise of the Liberal Rich and the Remaking of America (201 0).jpg

In Fortunes of Change, David Callahan contends that something big is happening among the rich in America: they’re drifting to the left. When Callahan set out to write a book on the new upper class, he expected to profile a greedy and reactionary elite—the robber barons of a second Gilded Age. Instead, he discovered something else. While many of the rich still back a GOP that stands against taxes and regulation, liberalism is spreading fast among the wealthy.

In Fortunes of Change, we meet an upper class increasingly filled with super-educated professionals and entrepreneurs who work in “knowledge” industries and live in the bluest parts of America. This cosmopolitan elite takes for granted such key liberal ideas as multiculturalism and active government, and have ever less in common with an extremist GOP based in small-town America and dominated by Tea Party activists and the likes of Sarah Palin. Fortunes of Change explores:

* Why some of America’s wealthiest people backed Barack Obama’s presidential bid and are pouring record sums into the Democratic Party and liberal organizations, even though they stand to see their taxes go up.
* How a few big donors have spent millions to create the modern gay rights movement and how environmental activists have tapped a river of new liberal cash.
* Why Hollywood, rolling in new profits thanks to globalization, has more money than ever to back Democratic candidates and push politics to the left.
* Why Silicon Valley is turning more liberal and how tech money—including Bill Gates’s vast fortune—is funding a growing array of liberal groups and politicians.
* How the upper class is likely to get more liberal as young heirs are inculcated with liberal ideas in America’s most elite prep schools and universities.
* David Callahan is a co-founder of the think tank Demos, where he is now a senior fellow. He is author of the Cheating Culture, among other books, and his articles have appeared in such places as USA Today, the New York Times, the Nation, and the Washington Monthly.

Packed with surprising facts and behind-the-scene stories, Fortunes of Change is a must-read book if want to understand how America's politics and culture are changing—and what the future may hold.

Donald D. Hester - The Evolution of Monetary Polic y and Banking in the US (2008).jpg

A concise analysis of the evolution of monetary policy and banking institutions over the past sixty years that stresses the dynamic interactions between the Federal Reserve and banking institutions that resulted from financial market innovations. Institutions were influenced by increasing competition in markets and monetary policies. The book consists of two parts, which are organized chronologically. The first has chapters that correspond with terms of chairmen of the Federal Reserve Board. It critically analyzes decisions taken by the Federal Open Market Committee in each period and argues that innovations forced changes in the design and conduct of monetary policy. The second part analyzes how banking institutions evolved from a very conservative and regulated system in 1945 to highly inventive financial firms and how this evolution has affected the distribution of credit, wealth, and income in the US.

Robin Wood - Howard Hawks (1968).jpg

No book in the entire field of film studies has had a greater impact on me than this one. Robin Wood's passionate and insightful analysis is the best possible companion to the films of the great American director Howard Hawks.Hawks, who died two years before I was born, is best known for adventure films about male bonding (Only Angels Have Wings, 1939, and Rio Bravo, 1959, are good examples) and quick-witted romantic comedies about attraction through antagonism (1938's Bringing Up Baby is his best). He made films in Hollywood in every decade from the 1920s to the 1970s, in a diverse range of genres, yet with a remarkable thematic consistency. For his success in making personal films within the Hollywood studio system, film critics celebrated him as a true artist (an auteur), at a time when considering film as art was still a radical notion.

Wood's book was first published in 1968, and it remains the most convincing account I have ever read of Hawks' artistry.Typically for Wood, the analysis is educational yet highly personal, accessible yet subjective, and - for me - genuinely inspiring. Wood died less than a year ago, and he has rightly been acknowledged as a major contributor to the development of film studies; he founded influential film magazines, was among the first to teach film at university level, and wrote several books (indeed, his volume on Alfred Hitchcock is surely much more widely read than this book on Hawks that so influenced me). Wood refuted suggestions that he was a scholar or a theorist, describing himself finally as a critic. He had no interest in the detached objectivity he saw as characteristic of theorists, and at the heart of his discussions of Hawks' films are questions of artistic and moral value. I think one of the reasons I love Hawks so much is that his films are fundamentally "decent"; they are about good people struggling with self-respect and personal redemption. Wood undoubtedly feels the same way, and the themes he identifies in the work of Hawks - integrity as an individual and loyalty as a member of a group - are much more important than the films' visual and technical qualities.

As a student, I taught myself auteur theory by obsessively watching every Hawks film I could find, and devouring Wood's analysis after each viewing. One of the great charms of Hawks is his insistent repetition from film to film, yet Wood's interpretations always provided original ideas and new insights. I was as passionate about Wood's writing as I was about Hawks' films. What strikes me now is how similar the two are: just as the films of Hawks were made with an unpretentious and highly personal simplicity, so Wood's writing, unencumbered by theoretical frameworks, expressed his individual passions with poetic clarity.

This book is a product of its time, arguing a point - that mainstream entertainment can be art - that is widely accepted now: film studies as an academic discipline is proof of that. Review by Daniel Martin
