William N. Thompson - Native American Issues (2005 ).jpeg

This handbook attempts to add perspective and analysis to the sort of facts already found in several good reference works. In his lenghthy introduction, Thompson (public administration, Univ. of Missouri) discusses indigenous North Americans in the context of an explication of sovereignty and presents gambling's relationship to Native American economic development, an approach not taken in other Native American reference works. A useful chapter collects court cases, legislation, and statistics, and, as in most other works of this sort, an organization directory and annotated bibliography are included. The Points of View section is perhaps the most useful, excerpting the now poignant words of Native leaders in response to two centuries of majority action. This volume's weaknesses include a detailed but sloppily written and uneven chronology and a too-brief glossary that should have included pronunciation. Also, the biographical sketches include Native leaders throughout history but only list opposing European leaders prior to the 20th century. Ultimately, this book tries to do too much and fails. Too broad and not sufficiently deep, it is an imperfect match for the "Contemporary World Issues" series; many pieces do not treat current Native concerns, and in some cases considerable scholarship is needed to separate fact from opinion. Comprehensive collections could consider, but small and medium collections would be better served by the Native North American Almanac (Gale, 1994), a more clearly organized source for much of the ready-reference information covered here. David A. J. Richards - Fundamentalism in American Religion and Law; Obama's Challenge to Patriarchy' s Threat to Democracy (2010).jpg

01 - USA - David A. J. Richards - Fundamentalism in American Reli...amas Challenge to Patriarchys Threat to Democracy 2010.jpg

Why, from Reagan to George Bush, have fundamentalists in religion and in law (originalists) exercised such political power and influence in the United States? Why has the Republican Party forged an ideology of judicial appointments (originalism) hostile to abortion and gay rights? Why and how did Barack Obama distinguish himself among Democratic candidates not only by his opposition to the Iraq war but by his opposition to originalism? This book argues that fundamentalism in both religion and law threatens democratic values and draws its appeal from a patriarchal psychology still alive in our personal and political lives and at threat from the constitutional developments since the 1960s. The argument analyzes this psychology (based on traumatic loss in intimate life) and resistance to it (based on the love of equals). Obama's resistance to originalism arises from his developmental history as a democratic, as opposed to patriarchal, man who resists the patriarchal demands on men and women that originalism enforces - in particular, the patriarchal love laws that tell people who and how and how much they may love.

01 - USA - David L. Pearsom, C. Barry Knisley, Charles J. Kazilek ...the Tiger Beetles of the United States and Canada 2005.jpg

This color illustrated field and natural history guide treats all 107 known tiger beetle species found in North America above the Mexican border. Tiger beetles are among the most widely found and popular families of insects worldwide. Enabling amateur naturalists and professionals to use two identification methods--comparison of colored pictures to live or mounted specimens, and use of illustrated dichotomous keys--full biological accounts emphasize points for identification, behaviors, and habitats. Distribution maps show where various species and subspecies can be found. The authors promote a new and exciting activity of insect watching as an alternative or supplement to collecting (the general feeling among "butterfliers" and dragonfly and damselfly enthusiasts). Communicating primarily through the un-refereed journal Cincindela, (Tiger Beetler) specialists themselves prefer the term, "cicindelophiles." They represent an ardent sublet of the growing number of serious amateur naturalists who invest in outdoor activities seeking and identifying birds, butterflies, dragonflies, flowering plants, and various other forms of life.

01 - USA - Lindsay G. Robertson - Conquest by Law How the Discove...ca Dispossessed Indigenous Peoples of Their Lands 2005.jpg

Law professor Robertson presents a meticulously researched analysis of the political rivalries and personal greed surrounding a landmark Supreme Court decision that set the stage for "the judicial conquest of Native America." In 1823, two large land speculation companies brought their case to the Court in the hope of having their claims to land in Illinois and Indiana validated. Chief Justice John Marshall, guided by his concern with maintaining the power of the Court relative to the Congress and the states, and his personal desire to secure land grants for Revolutionary War soldiers, produced his landmark "discovery doctrine" that gave "exclusive title" to those who "discovered" the land. Indians were thereby reduced to mere occupants "incapable of transferring absolute title to others." To Marshall's chagrin, this doctrine led to the practice of "Indian removal," whereby entire tribes were forced to move west as their lands were opened to speculators. Robertson's study is based on rediscovered historical records that clearly reveal how greed for land and power instigated the Trail of Tears and similar tragedies.

William O. Beeman - The Great Satan vs. the Mad Mu llahs; How the United States and Iran Demonize Eac h Other (2005).jpg

01 - USA - William O. Beeman - The Great Satan vs. the Mad Mullah...ow the United States and Iran Demonize Each Other 2005.jpg

The United States and Iran have been estranged for 25 years. They have carried out a mutual process of demonization that is unprecedented in modern history, based on cultural "hot buttons" that have the power to galvanize the populations of both countries. Iranian leaders have characterized the United States as the Great Satan--an evil corruptor that pollutes society and destroys personal morality. These leaders readily make the analogy between the United States and the Umayyid rulers who in 680 C.E. killed the Imam Hussein, the central religious figure in the history of the Iranian state religion, Twelver Shi'ism. American leaders characterize the members of the current government of the Islamic Republic of Iran as "Mad Mullahs," wild-eyed and irrational. They accuse them of fomenting the hostage crisis, in which American embassy personnel were held for 444 days at the end of the Carter administration, dealing a severe blow to U.S. national honor. The Bush administration has further accused the Iranians of being part of an "Axis of Evil" on the basis of their alleged support of terrorists, oppression of women and minorities, and development of nuclear weapons. Giving a thorough account of the background of U.S.-Iranian relations, Beeman claims that the current accusations of both Iran and the United States are baseless, consisting largely of public invective and symbolic rhetoric according to their own mythologies of evil.

Melvyn Stokes - D.W. Griffith's the Birth of a Nat ion (2008).jpg

In this deeply researched and vividly written volume, Melvyn Stokes illuminates the origins, production, reception and continuing history of this ground-breaking, aesthetically brilliant, and yet highly controversial movie.
By going back to the original archives, particularly the NAACP and D. W. Griffith Papers, Stokes explodes many of the myths surrounding The Birth of a Nation (1915). Yet the story that remains is fascinating: the longest American film of its time, Griffith's film incorporated many new features, including the first full musical score compiled for an American film. It was distributed and advertised by pioneering methods that would quickly become standard. Through the high prices charged for admission and the fact that it was shown, at first, only in "live" theaters with orchestral accompaniment, Birth played a major role in reconfiguring the American movie audience by attracting more middle-class patrons. But if the film was a milestone in the history of cinema, it was also undeniably racist.

Cooper Lawrence - The Cult of Celebrity; What Our Fascination with the Stars Reveals About Us (2009).jpg

America’s fast-growing religion is—let’s face it—celebrity worship. From gossip magazines to entertainment TV, from blogs to ads featuring famous faces, the stars are our new gods and goddesses. Their lives often seem as (or more) important than our own. But why are we so quick to put them on pedestals? Why are we even more spellbound when they topple back down to earth? And why do so many of us, on an unprecedented scale, think we could—and should—be celebrities, too?

In The Cult of Celebrity, psychology expert and nationally syndicated talk-show host Cooper Lawrence tells us why we do it and points both to the benefits and dangers of celebrity worship not only to society but also to us—our spending habits, health, social awareness, attitude toward personal failure and toward relationships, and above all, our self-image.

Drawing on the latest research as well as interviews with fans, entertainment industry insiders, and celebrities (Fran Drescher, Kevin Federline, Edwin McCain, and Marcia Gay Harden, to name but a few), The Cult of Celebrity is as accessible and sassy as it is thought-provoking. Frequent “reality checks” offer practical ways to gauge whether you or someone close to you has an unhealthy attitude to celebrity worship. In addition to providing clear steps to tackle the problem, this book offers the many among us who are interested in celebrities for harmless “entertainment-social” reasons tips to keep our interest under control, including danger signs to watch for.

Every bit as addictive as its subject, The Cult of Celebrity is a must for all the smart celeb hounds out there, as well as the parents and friends of those who've gone over the edge.

Alan Brinkley - The Publisher; Henry Luce and His American Century (2011).jpg

Acclaimed historian Alan Brinkley gives us a sharply realized portrait of Henry Luce, arguably the most important publisher of the twentieth century. As the founder of Time, Fortune, and Life magazines, Luce changed the way we consume news and the way we understand our world. Born the son of missionaries, Henry Luce spent his childhood in rural China, yet he glimpsed a milieu of power altogether different at Hotchkiss and later at Yale. While working at a Baltimore newspaper, he and Brit Hadden conceived the idea of Time: a “news-magazine” that would condense the week’s events in a format accessible to increasingly busy members of the middle class. They launched it in 1923, and young Luce quickly became a publishing titan. In 1936, after Time’s unexpected success—and Hadden’s early death—Luce published the first issue of Life, to which millions soon subscribed.Brinkley shows how Luce reinvented the magazine industry in just a decade. The appeal of Life seemingly cut across the lines of race, class, and gender. Luce himself wielded influence hitherto unknown among journalists. By the early 1940s, he had come to see his magazines as vehicles to advocate for America’s involvement in the escalating international crisis, in the process popularizing the phrase “World War II.” In spite of Luce’s great success, happiness eluded him. His second marriage—to the glamorous playwright, politician, and diplomat Clare Boothe—was a shambles. Luce spent his later years in isolation, consumed at times with conspiracy theories and peculiar vendettas. The Publisher tells a great American story of spectacular achievement—yet it never loses sight of the public and private costs at which that achievement came.

Osprey - Graphic History 08 - Dan Abnett - Ironcla ds at War; The Monitor Vs the Merrimac (2007).jpg

On March 9, 1862, the world saw the first battle between two ironclad warships; a battle which would change the face of naval warfare forever. The fight took place in the Mississippi River, Virginia, between the newly-developed Confederate ironclad CSS Merrimack - officially the CSS Virginia - and the Union's counterpart USS Monitor. The four-hour duel that ensued was ultimately a stalemate, but crucially, despite their best efforts, the Confederacy had failed again to break the Northern blockade of the Southern ports. This comic strip narrative illustrates one of the most revolutionary naval battles in world history and transports the reader to the cramped and dangerous conditions that the sailors faced for the first time.

Osprey - Graphic History 11 - Bill Cain - Hitler's Last Gamble; Battle of the Bulge (2007).jpg

Secretly planned down to the last detail by Hitler himself, the "Battle of the Bulge" was the last major German attack on the Western Front. On December 16, 1944, thirty German divisions roared across the Allied front in an attack intended to split them in two. The battle that ensued nearly proved disastrous for the American forces and witnessed some of the harshest fighting conditions of the entire war. However, despite the Americans being under-equipped and under strength, Hitler's offensive was stopped; extinguishing any hopes of German victory. This book vividly recreates an attack remembered as the biggest and bloodiest single battle American soldiers have ever fought.

Osprey - Graphic History 12 - Dan Abnett - Deadly Inferno; Battle of the Wilderness (2007).jpg

'The Wilderness' encompassed a 70-square-mile expanse of virtually impenetrable woodland in central Virginia, so dense it made conventional warfare impossible. The first battle, of Lieutenant General Ulyysses S Grant's 1864 Overland Campaign against the Army of Northern Virginia, the Wilderness witnessed some of the fiercest fighting of the Civil War. Though outnumbered, General Lee's forces posed stiff resistance to Grant's offensive. At the end of the three-day battle, the outcome was uncertain, and the fight ended in a draw. Brilliantly illustrating one of the American Civil War's most tactically challenging battles, this comic strip narrative brings to life a completely new type of warfare; the likes of which had never been fought before on American soil.

01 - USA - Tracey Deutsch - Building a Housewifes Paradise Gender,...American Grocery Stores in the Twentieth Century 2010.jpeg

Supermarkets are a mundane feature in the landscape, but as Tracey Deutsch reveals, they represent a major transformation in the ways that Americans feed themselves. In her examination of the history of food distribution in the United States, Deutsch demonstrates the important roles that gender, business, class, and the state played in the evolution of American grocery stores.

Deutsch's analysis reframes shopping as labor and embeds consumption in the structures of capitalism. The supermarket, that icon of postwar American life, emerged not from straightforward consumer demand for low prices, Deutsch argues, but through government regulations, women customers' demands, and retailers' concerns with financial success and control of the "shop floor." From small neighborhood stores to huge corporate chains of supermarkets, Deutsch traces the charged story of the origins of contemporary food distribution, treating topics as varied as everyday food purchases, the sales tax, postwar celebrations and critiques of mass consumption, and 1960s and 1970s urban insurrections. Demonstrating connections between women's work and the history of capitalism, Deutsch locates the origins of supermarkets in the politics of twentieth-century consumption.

G. Wayne Dowdy - Mayor Crump Don’t Like It; Machin e Politics in Memphis (2006).jpg

In the 1930s thousands of African Americans abandoned their long-standing allegiance to the party of Abraham Lincoln and began voting for Democratic Party candidates. This new voting pattern remapped the nation’s political landscape and altered the relationship between citizen and government. One of the forgotten builders of this modern Democratic Party was Memphis mayor and congressman Edward Hull Crump (1874-1954). Crump created a biracial, multiethnic coalition within the segregated South that transformed the Mississippi Delta’s largest city into a modern southern metropolis. Crump expanded city regulatory power, increased government efficiency and established a publicly owned electric utility. In addition, he secured a comprehensive flood control system for portions of the lower Mississippi River Valley. G. Wayne Dowdy cataloged the personal papers of Crump for the Memphis Public Library and brings Southern political history to life in this biography. In the 1930s Crump emerged as a national leader who influenced the direction of American politics. In 1936 Time described Crump as "one of the South’s most remarkable politicians." A political advisor to Franklin Roosevelt, Crump’s convinced a large number of blacks to abandon their allegiance to the Republicans for the party of FDR. Ironically, Crump’s power and influence ebbed over the course of the 1940s in large part due to the increasing independence of black voters seeking to desegregate Memphis and the South. Determined to maintain segregation, Crump abandoned the Democrats in 1948 for the States Rights Party and experienced a crushing political defeat.

David M. Primo - Rules and Restraint; Government S pending and the Design of Institutions (2007).jpg

Government spending has increased dramatically in the United States since World War II despite the many rules intended to rein in the insatiable appetite for tax revenue most politicians seem to share. Drawing on examples from the federal and state governments, Rules and Restraint explains in lucid, nontechnical prose why these budget rules tend to fail, and proposes original alternatives for imposing much-needed fiscal discipline on our legislators. One reason budget rules are ineffective, David Primo shows, is that politicians often create and preserve loopholes to protect programs that benefit their constituents. Another reason is that legislators must enforce their own provisions, an arrangement that is seriously compromised by their unwillingness to abide by rules that demand short-term sacrifices for the sake of long-term gain. Convinced that budget rules enacted through such a flawed legislative process are unlikely to work, Primo ultimately calls for a careful debate over the advantages and drawbacks of a constitutional convention initiated by the states—a radical step that would bypass Congress to create a path toward change. Rules and Restraint will be required reading for anyone interested in institutional design, legislatures, and policymaking.

Davis W. Houck, David E. Dixon - Rhetoric, Religio n and the Civil Rights Movement 1954-1965.jpg

The Civil Rights Movement succeeded in large measure because of rhetorical appeals grounded in the Judeo-Christian religion. While movement leaders often used America's founding documents and ideals to depict Jim Crow's contradictory ways, the language and lessons of both the Old and New Testaments were often brought to bear on many civil rights events and issues, from local desegregation to national policy matters. This volume chronicles how national movement leaders and local activists moved a nation to live up to the Biblical ideals it often professed but infrequently practiced.
