Elizabeth B. Crist - The Selected Correspondence o f Aaron Copland (2006).jpg

This is the first book devoted to the correspondence of composer Aaron Copland, covering his life from age eight to eighty-seven. The chronologically arranged collection includes letters to many significant figures in American twentieth-century music as well as Copland’s friends, family, teachers, and colleagues. Selected for readability, interest, and the light they cast upon the composer’s thoughts and career, the letters are carefully annotated and each published in its entirety.
Copland was a gifted and natural letter writer who revealed much more about himself in his letters than in formal writings in which he was conscious of his position as spokesman for modern music. The collected letters offer insights into his music, personality, and ideas, along with fascinating glimpses into the lives of such other well-known musicians as Leonard Bernstein, Carlos Chávez, William Schuman, and Virgil Thomson.

Kevin D. Mitnick - The Art of Deception, Controlli ng the Human Element of Security (2003).jpg

Mitnick is the most famous computer hacker in the world. Since his first arrest in 1981, at age 17, he has spent nearly half his adult life either in prison or as a fugitive. He has been the subject of three books and his alleged 1982 hack into NORAD inspired the movie War Games. Since his plea-bargain release in 2000, he says he has reformed and is devoting his talents to helping computer security. It's not clear whether this book is a means toward that end or a, wink-wink, fictionalized account of his exploits, with his name changed to protect his parole terms. Either way, it's a tour de force, a series of tales of how some old-fashioned blarney and high-tech skills can pry any information from anyone. As entertainment, it's like reading the climaxes of a dozen complex thrillers, one after the other. As a security education, it's a great series of cautionary tales; however, the advice to employees not to give anyone their passwords is bland compared to the depth and energy of Mitnick's descriptions of how he actually hacked into systems. As a manual for a would-be hacker, it's dated and nonspecific better stuff is available on the Internet but it teaches the timeless spirit of the hack. Between the lines, a portrait emerges of the old-fashioned hacker stereotype: a socially challenged, obsessive loser addicted to an intoxicating sense of power that comes only from stalking and spying.

Worldmark Encyclopedia of National Economies Volum e 2 – Americas (2002).jpg

The ultimate aim of this resource is stated in an introductory essay written by contributor Gerald W. Fry: "It is our hope that this set will enhance both economic and geographic literacy critically needed in an increasingly interconnected world." The editors and contributors attempt to accomplish this by presenting a series of accessible articles that methodically analyze the economic structures and financial climates of 198 countries and territories.
Countries are arranged in alphabetical order within four regional volumes. The country entries have two goals: to present a clear picture of current economic conditions and to provide statistical data that will allow for comparative interpretations. Within entries, information is divided into 14 standardized subdivisions, among them a country overview; an overview of the economy; a section on politics, government, and taxation; and a section on infrastructure, power and communications. Subsequent sections treat economic sectors, agriculture, industry, services, international trade, money, poverty and wealth, working conditions, the country's history and economic development (in time-line format), and future trends. A fifteenth subdivision looks at the economies of any dependencies, colonies, or territories. A country-specific bibliography of print and electronic sources completes each entry.

William B. Meyer - Americans and Their Weather (20 00).jpg

This revealing book synthesizes research from many fields to offer the first complete history of the roles played by weather and climate in American life from colonial times to the present. Author William B. Meyer characterizes weather events as neutral phenomena that are inherently neither hazards nor resources, but can become either depending on the activities with which they interact. Meyer documents the ways in which different kinds of weather throughout history have represented hazards and resources not only for such exposed outdoor pursuits as agriculture, warfare, transportation, construction, and recreation, but for other realms of life ranging from manufacturing to migration to human health. He points out that while the weather and climate by themselves have never determined the course of human events, their significance as been continuously altered for better and for worse by the evolution of American life.

Joint Committee on Printing Congress (U.S.) - Biog raphical Directory of the United States Congress, 1774-2005 (2006).jpg

01 - USA - Joint Committee on Printing Congress U.S. - Biographica...irectory of the United States Congress, 1774-2005 2006.jpg

Includes biographies of each person who has served in the Continental Congress or the U.S. Congress from 1774-2004. Includes over 12,000 brief biographies. Also lists the members of each Congress from the first Congress to the 108th Congress. The 108th Congress ended on January 3, 2005. The Biographical Directory has evolved to reflect the changing face of Congress, in which more than 12,000 individuals have served during the past two centuries. Since the country achieved its independence in 1776, our national legislatures have balanced tradition with the necessity of adapting to new circumstances. The role and procedures of Congress remain the same—to serve as the central lawmaking body of the national government. Many of its practices trace roots back to the British Parliament and beyond.

Richard Middleton - The Bells of Victory. The Pitt –Newcastle Ministry and the Conduct of the Seven Y ears' War, 1757–1762 (1985).jpg

01 - USA - Richard Middleton - The Bells of Victory. The PittNewca... and the Conduct of the Seven Years War, 17571762 1985.jpg

‘Our Bells are worn threadbare with ringing for victory’, wrote Horace Walpole after receiving news of Wolfe’s victory at Quebec in October 1759. Traditional accounts of the Seven Years’ War have emphasized the contribution of the Elder Pitt to the success of Britain in Europe, the Caribbean, Africa, India and the Far East.

The Bells of Victory argues that such a view is misguided and that, far from exercising single-handed control, Pitt’s influence was necessarily circumscribed. The margin between military success and failure was extremely small, and the British authorities worked within constraints imposed by constitutional propriety and political expediency. Effective government action was the result of teamwork by many individuals in the diverse fields of diplomacy, politics, finance, the army, navy, ordnance and commissariat.

01 - USA - Timothy R. Mahoney - River Towns in the Great West, The...l Urbanization in the American Midwest, 1820-1870 1990.jpg

Between 1820 and the Civil War, the upper Mississippi valley was at the center of national and international attention. At the edge of the northern frontier, this area, known as "The Great West," was the destination of hundreds of thousands of immigrants from the East and from northern Europe. This book analyzes the development, maturation, growth, and sudden decline of the distinctive regional urban-economic system that developed in this area. Drawing from a variety of methods used in historical geography, economic history, systems analysis, and social and urban history, the author analyzes how early settlement patterns were affected by experience, climate, and geography, and, in turn, shaped the initial patterns of economic, urban, and transportation development. As the systems developed, towns became more functionally differentiated and several towns emerged as the more important competitors for regional hinterland control. The center of the analysis focuses on the efforts of these river towns to respond to a variety of settlement, economic, and transport network forces that worked in favor of the regional entrepots of Chicago and St. Louis.

Richard H. K. Vietor - Energy policy in America si nce 1945. A study of business–government relations (1984).jpg

In the political economy of energy, World War II was a significant watershed: It accelerated the transition from dependence on coal to petroleum and natural gas. At the same time, mobilization provided an unprecedented experience in the management of energy markets by a forced partnership of business and government. Vietor covers American policy from 1945 to 1980.

For readers convinced that big business contrived the energy crisis of the 1970s, this story will be disappointing, but enlightening. For those committed to theories of regulatory capture or public interest reform it should be frustrating. More than a history of government policy making, this book provides us with an innovative and insightful approach to the study of business-government relations in modern America. For managers, bureaucrats, and anyone interested in seeing a more effective national industrial policy, this history should put the relationship of business and government in a critical new perspective.

Finola Kerrigan - Film Marketing (2009).jpg

Film Marketing is the first book to consolidate existing literature into a well informed and academically sound textbook. The book focuses on the film industry as a whole, which incorporates popular (mainstream) fiction films (usually) in English, non English language fiction films, documentary films and art house films. In doing so, it is firmly embedded in the global film industry.

Although the film industry is global, it is dominated by the Hollywood major studios, and as such, discussion of the Hollywood film industry will be highlighted. But, unlike other film marketing books on the market, this book also highlights other successful film industries, such as Korea, Nigeria and India, as well as looking at examples of film marketing practices from a range of other countries which provide interesting case studies from Denmark, France, the UK and Hong Kong.

Film Marketing offers the student a unique combination of theory and practice and written in accessible student-friendly manner, presents an appealing and must-have text for anyone studying film. The book includes full pedagogical features and additional lecture resources, available at www.textbooks.elsevier.com allowing for easy use by both lecturer and student.
