Don Lago - On the Viking Trail, Travels in Scandin avian America (2004).jpg

When his father developed Alzheimer’s disease, Don Lago realized that the stories and traditions of his Swedish ancestors would be lost along with the rest of his father’s memories. Haunted by this inevitable tragedy, Lago set out to fight back against forgetting by researching and reclaiming his long-lost Scandinavian roots.
Beginning his quest with a visit to his ancestral home of Gränna, Sweden, Lago explores all facets of Scandinavian America—Swedish, Danish, Finnish, Norwegian, and Icelandic—along the way. He encounters Icelanders living in the Utah desert, a Titanic victim buried beneath a gigantic Swedish coffeepot in Iowa, an Arkansas town named after the famous Swedish opera singer Jenny Lind, a real-life Legoland in southern California, and other unique remnants of America’s Scandinavian past. Visits to Sigurd Olson’s legendary cabin on the banks of Burntside Lake in the Boundary Waters of Minnesota and Carl Sandburg’s birthplace in Galesburg, Illinois, further provide Lago with an acute sense of the Scandinavian values that so greatly influenced, and continue to influence, American society.
More than just a travel memoir, On the Viking Trail places Scandinavian immigrants and their history within the wider sweep of American culture. Lago’s perceptive eye and amusing tales remind readers of all ethnic backgrounds that to truly appreciate America one must never forget its immigrant past.

Robert E. Weems - Desegregating the Dollar, Africa n American Consumerism in the Twentieth Century (1 998).jpg

Are African Americans better off now . . . ? This seemingly inevitable question has only one frustrating but accurate answer: Yes and no. Weems, a history professor at the University of Missouri^-Columbia, explores the conundrum by tracing a century's change in African Americans' lives and finances as a special case in the consumerization of American society.

John C. Ryan - State of the Northwest, Revised 200 0 Edition, (New Report, 9 (2000).jpg

No place on Earth has a better chance to reconcile people and nature than the Pacific Northwest: the greenest part of history’s richest civilization. State of the Northwest—newly revised and updated for 2000—is the only comprehensive health check for the region stretching from southeast Alaska to northern California and from the Pacific Ocean to the crest of the Rockies. Six years after Northwest Environment Watch published the first edition of State of the Northwest, the region’s ecosystems are still in critical condition. Yet our environment remains less degraded than almost anywhere else in the industrial world. We in the Northwest still have a rare opportunity to build a sustainable way of life—one that can last. This book shows the region from a different point of view: a salmon’s. After traveling with a chinook from Idaho mountains to the Gulf of Alaska and back, you may never look at the Northwest the same way again.

Anne Soon Choi - Korean Americans (2006).jpg

Although Koreans immigrated to the United States in the early 20th century and again shortly after the Korean War, the largest wave of Korean immigrants didn't arrive here until after the Immigration Act of 1965. Korean Americans are the fourth-largest Asian group in the United States; 33 percent live in California. "Korean Americans" focuses on this important group, its history, culture, and contributions, and includes profiles of such notables as Jay Kim, who, in 1993, became the first Korean American elected to Congress, and ABC News anchor, Ju Ju Chang.

Anton Chaitkin - Treason in America, From Aaron Bu rr to Averell Harriman (1998).jpg

About the Author
Anton Chaitkin is a founding member of the political movement associated with Lyndon LaRouche. He is the history editor of Executive Intelligence Review, and has written numerous articles on political and economic history. His 1992 book, George Bush: The Unauthorized Biography, co-authored with Webster Tarpley, stands as the definitive biography of the former President.

Chaitkin was born in New York City in 1943, the son of Jacob Chaitkin, an attorney who spent the 1930s fighting Nazi Germany's corporate and legal collaborators on Wall Street.

Anton Chaitkin attended public school in Pasadena, California. His study of the history of the U.S. "Eastern Establishment" began in 1978, after he became aware of the startling inaccuracy of the relevant historical material in such publications as The New York Times. Chaitkin and his wife are the parents of a grown son, and live in Leesburg, Virginia. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Douglas R. Egerton - Gabriel's Rebellion, The Virg inia Slave Conspiracies of 1800 and 1802 (1993).jpg

Gabriel's Rebellion tells the dramatic story of what was perhaps the most extensive slave conspiracy in the history of the American South. Douglas Egerton illuminates the complex motivations that underlay two related Virginia slave revolts: the first, in 1800, led by the slave known as Gabriel; and the second, called the 'Easter Plot,' instigated in 1802 by one of his followers. Although Gabriel has frequently been portrayed as a messianic, Samson-like figure, Egerton shows that he was a literate and highly skilled blacksmith whose primary goal was to destroy the economic hegemony of the 'merchants, the only whites he ever identified as his enemies. According to Egerton, the social, political, and economic disorder of the Revolutionary era weakened some of the harsh controls that held slavery in place during colonial times. Emboldened by these conditions, a small number of literate slaves—most of them highly skilled artisans—planned an armed insurrection aimed at destroying slavery in Virginia. The intricate scheme failed, as did the Easter Plot that stemmed from it, and Gabriel and many of his followers were hanged. By placing the revolts within the broader context of the volatile political currents of the day, Egerton challenges the conventional understanding of race, class, and politics in the early days of the American republic.

Scheldon H. Danziger - Understanding Poverty (2002 ).jpg

In spite of an unprecedented period of growth and prosperity, the poverty rate in the United States remains high relative to the levels of the early 1970s and relative to those in many industrialized countries today. UnderstandingPoverty brings the problem of poverty in America to the fore, focusing on its nature and extent at the dawn of the twenty-first century. Looking back over the four decades since the nation declared war onpoverty, the authors ask how the poor have fared in the market economy, what government programs have and have not accomplished, and what remains to be done. They help us understand how changes in the way the labor market operates, in family structure, and in social welfare, health, and education policies have affected trends inpoverty. Most significantly, they offer suggestions for changes in programs and policies that hold real promise for reducing poverty and income inequality.

Stephen I. Schwartz - Atomic Audit, The Costs and Consequences of U.S. Nuclear Weapons Since 1940 (1 998).jpg

Atomic Audit is the first comprehensive reconstruction of the costs and consequences of America's nuclear weapons programs--a fact that speak volumes about our cold war preferences for secrets and myths over democracy and facts.... By comprehensively revealing the waste and danger associated with our nuclear buildup, the authors of Atomic Audit lay the groundwork for questioning why we should continue to base our national security on nuclear weapons.
