01 - USA - Warmachines 05 - Francois Verlinder - M2-M3 Bradley, In...nfantry fighting vehicle-Cavalry fighting vehicle 1991.jpg

The M2/M3 BRADLEY, which effectiveness as a true combat fighting vehicle cou ld only be tested in t he recent Culf war, was t he first vehicle actually designed to carry t roops to land f r om) the battlefield and allowing them to fight from inside t he protective hull , instead of having to dismount and fight a battle in the open and facing the atrocities of nuclear and bio logical warfare.
The Vie t nam war clea rly demonstrated t he need for a MICFV (Mechanized Infantry Combat Vehicle) such as the Bradley which bene atted from early trials with the XM734 (an M113 with pistol po rts) and the M113 ACAV in t hat war.
As is often the case, combat vehicles are developed in anticipation of enemy desig ns. With t he Soviet BMP infant ry fighting vehicle already in serv ice and the BTR·GO being developed, performance capabi lities had to match, or better still , outclass theirs, Next to that, the new design should be able to keep up in speed with its future "Brot her in Arms", t he M1 ABRAMS tank , one of t he crttenas where an updated version Of the M113 would fail.
In it ial pla ns t o acquire a li censed -built German MARDER were dropped on t he basis of rather poor armor protection, inadequate fire power and high cost. After a lot of turmoil within the Defense Department on t his new MICV desig n, FMC corporation was awarded a development contract fo r eig ht init ial prototypes, which it delivered for testing in 1978. Named in horror of t he famous WWII ge nera l, omar N. BRADLEV, seve ra l hundred M2 (Infant ry) and M3 rcavatrvi MICV's were to be delivered to units both statestoe and overseas from 1982onwards.

Barbara Arneil John - Locke and America, The Defen ce of English Colonialism (1996).jpg

This book considers the context of the colonial policies of Britain, Locke's contribution to them, and the importance of these ideas in his theory of property. It also reconsiders the debate about John Locke's influence in America, challenging a number of other interpretations. The author breaks new ground in her interpretation of Locke's writings about the Indians and English colonization of America--a subject largely overlooked in the past.
The book argues that Locke's theory of property must be understood in connection with the philosopher's political concerns, as part of his endeavour to justify the colonialist policies of Lord Shaftesbury's cabinet, with which he was personally associated. The author maintains that traditional scholarship has failed to do justice to Locke by ignoring the implications of contemporary British imperial policy for the interpretation of his political thought.
The book offers a new insight into Locke's theory of property, suggesting a solution to the problem of why Locke himself assigned such importance to property in the state of nature being based on labour while at the same time asserting that property in civil society is based on convention.

Kyle William Bishop - American Zombie Gothic, The Rise and Fall (and Rise) of the Walking Dead in Po pular Culture (2010).jpg

01 - USA - Kyle William Bishop - American Zombie Gothic, The Rise ...l and Rise of the Walking Dead in Popular Culture 2010.jpg

Zombie stories are peculiarly American, as the creature was born in "The New World" and functions as a reminder of the atrocities of colonialism and slavery. The voodoo-based zombie films of the 1930s and '40s reveal deep-seated racist attitudes and imperialist paranoia, but the zombie invasion narrative established by George A. Romero has even greater singularity. His conception of a contagious, cannibalistic zombie horde uniquely manifests modern apprehensions about the horrors of Vietnam, the struggles for civil rights, the problems of consumerism, and the anxieties of modern warfare. This book provides a cultural and critical analysis of the cinematic zombie tradition, starting with its origins in Haitian folklore and tracking the development of the subgenre into the twenty-first century. Closely examining such influential works as Victor Halperin's "White Zombie", Jacques Tourneur's "I Walked with a Zombie", Lucio Fulci's "Zombi 2", Dan O'Bannon's "The Return of the Living Dead", Danny Boyle's "28 Days Later", and, of course, Romero's entire "Dead Series", it establishes the place of Zombies in the Gothic tradition.

About the Author
Kyle William Bishop is an assistant professor at Southern Utah University, where he teaches American literature and culture, film studies, fantasy literature, and English composition. He has presented and published a variety of papers on popular culture and cinematic adaptation.

Lawrence I. Berkove - The Sagebrush Anthology, Lit erature from the Silver Age of the Old West (2006).jpg

Sagebrush School is a term applied to a group of writers who spent their creative years in Nevada from the 1860s to the early twentieth century - its most illustrious representative being Mark Twain. Yet most of their work was never republished from the periodicals in which it first appeared and today remains largely unknown to many scholars and aficionados of Western literature. Lawrence I. Berkove, acknowledged as the leading authority on this body of literature, has assembled an exceptional collection that rescues the lively works of the Sagebrush School from the dusty archives in which they have languished. "The Sagebrush Anthology", which enlarges Mark Twain's circle to encompass the Sagebrush Bohemians through a compelling blend of humorous and serious fiction, memoir, nonfiction, letters, and poetry, contains sixty-seven selections - seven by Twain - representing outstanding work by accomplished Sagebrushers Dan De Quille, Sam Davis, Joe Goodman, and Rollin Daggett, plus pieces by lesser-known writers such as Arthur McEwen, Alf Doten, and Fred Hart. Berkove's introduction recounts the history of the school and identifies and analyzes its main thematic and stylistic characteristics. He shows that Sagebrush literature records and reflects the collision of the last generation of frontiersmen with the new culture of technology, industry, and big business - men of talent, imagination, and integrity driven to work out distinctive ways of coping with an unresponsive system of justice, an economy tilted toward the rich, and a society that impinged on individual liberties.

Wilma King - The Essence of Liberty, Free Black Wo men During the Slave Era (2006).jpg

Before 1865, slavery and freedom coexisted tenuously in America in an environment that made it possible not only for enslaved women to become free but also for emancipated women to suddenly lose their independence. Wilma King now examines a wide-ranging body of literature to show that, even in the face of economic deprivation and draconian legislation, many free black women were able to maintain some form of autonomy and lead meaningful lives. "The Essence of Liberty" blends social, political, and economic history to analyze black women's experience in both the North and the South, from the colonial period through emancipation. Focusing on class and familial relationships, King examines the myriad sources of freedom for black women to show the many factors that, along with time spent in slavery before emancipation, shaped the meaning of freedom. Her book also raises questions about whether free women were bound to or liberated from gender conventions of their day. Drawing on a wealth of untapped primary sources - not only legal documents and newspapers but also the diaries, letters, and autobiographical writings of free women - King opens a new window on the world of black women. She examines how they became free, educated themselves, found jobs, maintained self-esteem, and developed social consciousness - even participating in the abolitionist movement. She considers the stance of southern free women toward their enslaved contemporaries and the interactions between previously free and newly freed women after slavery ended. She also looks closely at women's spirituality, disclosing the dilemma some women faced when they took a stand against men - even black men - in order to follow their spiritual callings. Throughout this engaging history, King underscores the pernicious constraints that racism placed on the lives of free blacks in spite of the fact that they were not enslaved. The Essence of Liberty shows the importance of studying these women on their own terms, revealing that the essence of freedom is more complex than the mere absence of shackles.

01 - USA - Katherine Irene Pettus - Felony Disenfranchisement in ...ns, Institutional Racism, and Modern Consequences 2004.jpg

Pettus traces felony disenfranchisement from Athenian democracy to the present. She analyzes the contradiction between present state disenfranchisement practices and voting rights jurisprudence and concludes that American citizens lack equal voting rights: the right to vote for national representatives is trumped by state laws that define felonies and the criteria for disenfranchisement. The majority of the disenfranchised today are African-American, and most felony convictions are drug-related. Nonetheless, drug use and trafficking are equally distributed across demographic groups. The current variation in state laws disenfranchising felons, the lack of standard definitions of felonies, and the racial disparities within the criminal justice system reproduce many of the inequalities of the colonial America, despite the development of federal citizenship and voting rights law since the end of the Civil War.

Norma Thompson - Unreasonable Doubt, Circumstantia l Evidence And an Ordinary Murder in New Haven (20 06).jpg

It was to all appearances an ordinary murder - many might have said that it was an open-and-shut case. But some jurors were not convinced, and the taint of reasonable doubt led one of them to question the very future of our legal system. For many Americans, the civic responsibility of jury duty might seem an inconvenience; for Norma Thompson, it was a unique opportunity to bring her expertise to bear on the state of trial procedures in America today. With a background in political science, literature, and the classics, Thompson served as jury foreman in a trial of an "ordinary" murder in New Haven, Connecticut. Deliberations were buffeted by crosswinds of common sense and strong emotion. The trial ended in a hung jury because of what Thompson calls the "unreasonable doubts" of two fellow jurors concerning circumstantial evidence in an age when DNA testing holds out the promise of irrefutable proof. In a compelling tale of contrasting rhetoric, Thompson takes readers into the courtroom to hear a streetwise convict verbally sparring with the D.A., then brings us into the confines of the jury room to have us witness nervous chatter over the meaning of evidence. She also contrasts this ordinary murder with the concurrent brutal stabbing of a Yale student, a case that attracted considerably more police and media attention. Thompson argues that the indeterminate results of the trial are symptomatic of larger problems in the justice system and society and that the reluctance of most people today to be judgmental is damaging the criminal justice system. As an antidote, she suggests that great literary and historical texts can help us develop the capacity for prudential judgment. Gleaning insights from an imaginary jury of Tocqueville and Plato, Jane Austen and William Faulkner, among other writers and thinkers, Thompson shows how confrontation with the works of such authors can help model more proper habits of deliberation. Blending personal memoir, social analysis, and literary criticism, "Unreasonable Doubt" is a challenging book that deals squarely with the evasion of judgment in contemporary political, social, and legal affairs. Brimming with brilliant insights, it suggests that the foundations for thought and action in our time have been neglected as a result of the wall erected between the social sciences and the humanities and invites readers to consider jury duty in a new light. Through real-world drama and literary reflection, it shows us that there is more to politics than power - and more of value to be found in the humanities than we may have supposed.

Perry Lentz - Private Fleming at Chancellorsville, The Red Badge of Courage And the Civil War (2006).jpg

Famous for its insight into a young, inexperienced soldier's psychology, Stephen Crane's "The Red Badge of Courage" has long been assumed to have been based on little more than magazine articles and veterans' reminiscences. It also has been subject to various misreadings, including ones dominated by fictional responses to the wars of the twentieth century. Perry Lentz now draws on more than three decades of teaching the novel and his own experience as a historical novelist to plumb the historical realities that actually shaped it and to confront these misreadings. Taking a new look at a classic work that many may feel they already know, Lentz shows how this apparently impressionistic novel is actually a faithful reflection of Civil War combat based on thorough knowledge about combat in general and the battle of Chancellorsville in particular. Anchoring the novel's action firmly in the Civil War, Lentz challenges the long-standing assumption that Crane did little research for the novel, arguing that he made extensive use of contemporary sources to fashion an accurate depiction of Chancellorsville. Rich with information about infantry combat in the Civil War, from uniforms and weaponry to formations and battlefield tactics, Lentz's study invites readers to follow the exploits of Private Henry Fleming of the 304th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment as he and his fellow soldiers participate in this legendary battle. Lentz shows how Crane evokes a set of traditional responses from his reader and how close reading expands those responses. He examines Private Fleming's adventures behind the lines of battle in terms of the historical situations in which they are set, then explains how Crane repeatedly entices readers into imposing their initial expectations and final evaluations upon the experiences of this particular soldier. Lentz also investigates why the novel's portrayal of its hero's experiences on the second day of battle is sometimes ignored and always undervalued. By focusing on events both as they actually unfolded at Chancellorsville and as Crane depicted Fleming and his comrades experiencing them, he shows how these soldiers judge themselves, how others judge them, and how a reader can achieve a more sophisticated understanding of these judgments. Lentz's work reclaims a place for this novel in the American canon and enhances our understanding of Crane, of a legendary battle, and of war literature in general.

Eric D. Lemont - American Indian Constitutional Re form and the Rebuilding of Native Nations (2006).jpg

Since 1975, when the U.S. government adopted a policy of self-determination for American Indian nations, a large number of the 562 federally recognized nations have seized the opportunity to govern themselves and determine their own economic, political, and cultural futures. As a first and crucial step in this process, many nations are revising constitutions originally developed by the U.S. government to create governmental structures more attuned to native people's unique cultural and political values. These new constitutions and the governing institutions they create are fostering greater governmental stability and accountability, increasing citizen support of government, and providing a firmer foundation for economic and political development.
This book brings together for the first time the writings of tribal reform leaders, academics, and legal practitioners to offer a comprehensive overview of American Indian nations' constitutional reform processes and the rebuilding of native nations. The book is organized in three sections. The first part investigates the historical, cultural, economic, and political motivations behind American Indian nations' recent reform efforts. The second part examines the most significant areas of reform, including criteria for tribal membership/citizenship and the reform of governmental institutions. The book concludes with a discussion of how American Indian nations are navigating the process of reform, including overcoming the politics of reform, maximizing citizen participation, and developing short-term and long-term programs of civic education.

Karl E. Lutze - Awakening to Equality, A Young Whi te Pastor at the Dawn of Civil Rights (2006).jpg

When young Karl E. Lutze arrived in Oklahoma in 1945, he stepped into another world. A newly ordained clergyman born in Wisconsin, he was a young white man assigned to minister among Muskogee's African American community. He soon found that in the South, crosses were as likely to be burned as revered. His recollections of postwar Oklahoma provide a compelling testament to the era's racial conflict and some steps taken toward its resolution. "Awakening to Equality" offers a unique perspective on an often-violent era that witnessed the gradual dismantling of segregation. Serving congregations in Muskogee and Tulsa, Lutze encountered a cross section of both communities - from the white and black power brokers to the most disempowered black and biracial families - and a stratified society buttressed by intimidation, cross burnings, and bombs. His activism in the Urban League and other local civil rights organizations gave him firsthand experience with forces moving toward change, as well as with the more entrenched forces resisting it. Blending personal anecdotes and recollections of key players in this unfolding drama, Lutze puts a human face on historical and journalistic accounts of social change during the crucial early years of the civil rights movement. He takes readers back to small-town and urban Oklahoma in a time when African Americans were beginning to challenge segregation in Muskogee's public transportation and a handful of liberal whites were trying to move their communities toward desegregation. Throughout this rich memoir, we meet actual people creating a future - one that involved the very redefinition of America. More than a view of an earnest young clergyman trying to grow beyond the racial and social limitations of the church of his day, "Awakening to Equality" also depicts the struggles of Lutze's own denomination to overcome its earlier accommodation of racism. Lutze's success in his ministries made his achievements a model for mission work among African Americans and led to his appointment in 1959 first as field secretary and then shortly thereafter as executive director of the Lutheran Human Relations Association, a pioneering civil rights organization. Simultaneously, he taught classes as Associate Professor of Theology at Valparaiso University. Lutze not only witnessed important events but also participated in them and found that his entire career was shaped by the experience. "Awakening to Equality" is a moving story that captures the real-life education of a prominent clergyman during a critical period in American life.

Fred C. Hobson - Off the Rim, Basketball And Othe r Religions in a Carolina Childhood (2006).jpg

Why should a particular game, played with a round ball by twenty-year-olds in short pants often hundreds of miles away, mean so much to me, since I seem to have so little to gain or lose by its outcome?" Fred Hobson thus begins "Off the Rim", his narrative of college basketball and society, of growing up and not growing up. He seeks the answer to this question by delving into the particulars of his own experience. Growing up in a small town in the hills of North Carolina where basketball was king, he became a rabid UNC basketball fan (like many others) at the tender age of thirteen during the 1956-1957 Tar Heels "magical" 32-0 national championship season. He starred as a high school basketball player and lived a dream by "walking on" the highly successful 1961-1962 Carolina freshman team. That was also the year Dean Smith was elevated to head coach of the Heels. Hobson observed firsthand the difficult early days of Coach Smith before he became the winningest coach in college basketball. Forced to find a substitute for his beloved sport after not making the varsity his sophomore year, Hobson turned to the romance of books, both reading and writing them. Changing his major to English, he discovered the joys of William Faulkner and Virginia Wolfe, Robert Penn Warren, Flannery O'Connor, and H. L. Mencken, and made a career teaching American literature. This is a book about basketball that is more than a book about basketball. It is, in the beginning, a depiction of a part of the South that departs from the usual idea of Dixie, a look into the culture, religion, and politics of the Carolina hills. It is a portrait of the people who made up the South, including the author's parents, who both were and were not conventional southerners. Finally, in some respects, it is the story of a boyhood that never ends, relived each year during basketball season in the frantic, tortured life of a fan. Although Hobson's story is largely about the Tar Heels - and about other things related to growing up in the South of the 1950s - what he says about basketball, childhood, and adulthood also holds true for those who finds themselves in emotional bondage to Hoosiers or Bulldogs or Ducks, to Wolverines, Gophers, Badgers, and various other species of Upper Midwestern low-lying ground fauna, to Blue Devils or Blue Demons, to Tigers, Wildcats, Cougars, and all other breeds of cat.

01 - USA - Darnell F. Hawkins, Kimberly Kempf-Leonard - Our Childr...d Ethnic Differences in American Juvenile Justice 2005.jpg

"Our Children, Their Children is a landmark in social science research. Offering no simplistic solutions about how to reduce racial disparities that permeate the juvenile justice system, it consistently demonstrates how multidisciplinary analysis can expose and explain the pervasive impact of race on American social institutions. And, perhaps most valuably, it revives belief that in the early twenty-first century, just like a century before, a public policy centered on nurturing rather than punishing children-all children-is the only guarantor of a criminal justice system that is moral and just."--Steven Schlossman, Carnegie Mellon University (Steven Schlossman Steven Schlossman 20050323)

"In this excellent collection of original essays Darnell Hawkins, Kimberly Kempf-Leonard, and a group of distinguished contributors have produced an important book that forces readers to confront racial and ethnic differences in juvenile offending and juvenile justice in the United States. This critical volume expands the discourse on this topic by emphasizing the complex and subtle nature of the problem."--Cathy Spatz Widom, New Jersey Medical School (Cathy Spatz Widom Cathy Spatz Widom )

"This is an outstanding volume that offers a collection of original essays examining the extent of racial and ethnic differences in rates of juvenile offending and in the processing of youths within the juvenile justice system in the United States. The contributors then consider the ramifications of these differences for evaluating the impact of public policy initiatives and legal reforms that have been implemented or proposed over the last several decades."--William H. W. Stephen Belko - The Invincible Duff Green, Whig of the West (2006).jpg

He made a name for himself in the Missouri territory as a land speculator, entrepreneur, lawyer, militia officer, politician, and newspaper editor. He went on to take part in many of the events that shaped the young republic, and his name became a household word. But Duff Green has not found his rightful place in history - until now. W. Stephen Belko has written the first full-scale political investigation of this important figure, examining Green's fundamental role in the politics, society, and economy of Jacksonian America. Duff Green emerged on the national stage when he became editor of the United States Telegraph, an organizer of the fledgling Democratic Party, and one of Andrew Jackson's chief advisers. He broke bitterly with Jackson over his feud with Vice President John C. Calhoun, then later found a place as a diplomat in John Tyler's administration and emerged as a key figure in the popularization of Manifest Destiny and the annexation of Texas. Green also played a major role in the transportation revolution as a developer of canal and railroad projects. Belko presents a balanced appraisal of Green's career, particularly from 1815 to 1850, delving into his personality to tease out the motivations for his pursuit of such wideranging ventures. Drawing on a wealth of previously unexploited primary sources, he not only chronicles Green's labyrinthine career but also illuminates Green's rise in the Democratic Party; his role in the creation and development of the Whig Party; and his considerable influence on national debates regarding slavery, nullification, the National Bank, territorial expansion, and foreign relations. For all his influence, Green has until now been either ignored or portrayed as a Calhoun minion and proslavery sectionalist of the Fireater mold. Belko revises these assessments of Green's role in the making of Jacksonian America, showing him to be an independent westerner who was politically moderate - even less fanatical on the slavery issue than many have supposed. Belko's research uncovers a Duff Green who was an aggressive and buoyant person, to be sure, but a democratic man of principle who is rightly called a quintessential Jacksonian. The story of Jacksonian America cannot be fully told without Duff Green. This long-awaited study is a compelling narrative for scholars and aficionados of political or Missouri history, offering a fresh view of his crucial contributions to the antebellum era and shedding new light on the true nature of Jacksonian democracy.
