Daniel Marston - The French-Indian War 1754-1760 ( 2003).jpg

This book traces the background and course of the French-Indian War, fought out in the forests, plains, and forts of the North American frontier. Despite early French successes against a British army unskilled in woodland fighting, the British learned quickly from their Native American allies and emerged victorious at Louisbourg and Quebec.

George Hutchinson - The Cambridge Companion to the Harlem Renaissance (2007).jpg

The Harlem Renaissance (1918-1937) was the most influential single movement in African American literary history. Its key figures include W. E. B. Du Bois, Nella Larsen, Zora Neale Hurston, Claude McKay, and Langston Hughes. The movement laid the groundwork for all later African American literature, and had an enormous impact on later black literature world-wide. With chapters by a wide range of well-known scholars, this Companion is an authoritative and engaging guide to the movement. It first discusses the historical contexts of the Harlem Renaissance, both national and international; then presents original discussions of a wide array of authors and texts; and finally treats the reputation of the movement in later years. Giving full play to the disagreements and differences that energized the renaissance, this Companion presents the best of current wisdom as well as a set of new readings encouraging further exploration of this dynamic field.

Stephen Gundle - Glamour, A History (2008).jpg

Glamor is one of the most tantalizing and bewitching aspects of contemporary culture--but also one of the most elusive. The aura of celebrity, the style of the fashion world, the vanity of the rich and beautiful, and the publicity-driven rites of cafe society are all imbued with irresistible magnetism. But what exactly is glamor? Where does it come from? How old is it? And can anyone quite capture its magic? Stephen Gundle answers all these questions and more in this first ever history of glamor. From Paris in the tumultuous final decades of the eighteenth century through to Hollywood, New York, and Monte Carlo in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, from the glamorous fictional characters of Walter Scott to iconic figures such as Marlene Dietrich and Marilyn Monroe to modern idols such as Paris Hilton, this marvelous book maps the origins of glamor and investigates the forms that it takes in modern times. Gundle entertainingly discusses the role of writers, journalists, artists, photographers, film-makers and fashion designers, occupations like the model and the air stewardess, cities and resorts such as Paris, New York and Monte Carlo, and products including luxury cars and jets--all of which have been associated in the public mind with the magical aura of glamor. And he shows how glamor feeds on the middle class yearning for a thrilling and colorful life, a yearning reinforced by the cinema and the press, which serve as a stage for acting out scenes of a desirable life, while also creating trends, promoting fashions, and furnishing celebrities. Here then is all the excitement and sex appeal of glamor, a fabulous tour of the beautiful, the rich, the sleazy, the false, and the tragic.

Alasdair Roberts - Blacked Out, Government Secrecy in the Information Age (2006).jpg

The conflict between expanding national security measures and preserving civil rights gets an extended examination in this timely history of the right to know. Lawyer and public policy scholar Roberts's occasionally exhausting book covers the right to know movement in a global and historical sense, touching on transparency movements and backlash domestically and internationally (the Freedom of Information Act's 1966 passing, Roberts notes, spurred the creation of similar laws in 60 countries) to show how governments across the world go to great lengths to dip, dodge, skirt and subvert openness laws. His account of the post-9/11 Bush administration depicts a secretive administration that bristles at attempts to reduce the secrecy under which it has conducted the war on terror. As Roberts demonstrates through countless examples, there are various ways for a government to subvert its own right-to-know laws without technically breaking any (classifying non-sensitive information, outsourcing operations, charging fees for information requests), sullying any optimism about the "rhetoric of transparency" that has been spreading as far as China in the past few decades. Roberts remains mindful that the "right to know" isn't a guarantee, but a struggle worth pursuing.

Mary Esteve - The Aesthetics and Politics of the C rowd in American Literature (2003).jpg

As a central icon of political and cultural democracy, the crowd occupies a prominent place in the American literary and cultural landscape. Mary Esteve examines a range of writing by Poe, Hawthorne, Du Bois, James, and Stephen Crane to provide a study of crowd representations in American literature from the antebellum era to the early twentieth century. She argues that these writers examined the aesthetic and political meanings of urban crowd scenes.

Stuart A. Wright - Patriots, Politics, and the Okl ahoma City Bombing (2997).jpg

This book explores an escalating spiral of tension between the Patriot movement and the state leading up to the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995. The author served as a consultant to Timothy McVeigh's defense team and draws on information based on face-to-face interviews with McVeigh. Wright contends that McVeigh was firmly entrenched in the Patriot movement and was part of a network of 'warrior cells' that planned and carried out the bombing. By examining the Patriot movement's history and subsequent reconfiguration of conflicts with the state, McVeigh's role in the bombing can be more fully understood.

Zoltan L. Hajnal - Changing White Attitudes toward Black Political Leadership (2006).jpg

Despite the hopes of the civil rights movement, researchers have found that the election of African Americans to office has not greatly improved the well-being of the black community. By shifting the focus to the white community, this book shows that black representation can have a profound impact. Utilizing national public opinion surveys, data on voting patterns in large American cities, and in-depth studies of Los Angeles and Chicago, Zoltan Hajnal demonstrates that under most black mayors there is real, positive change in the white vote and in the racial attitudes of white residents. This change occurs because black incumbency provides concrete information that disproves the fears and expectations of many white residents. These findings not only highlight the importance of black representation; they also demonstrate the critical role that information can play in racial politics to the point where black representation can profoundly alter white views and white votes.

Squadron 6035 - Larry Davis - Air War Over Korea, A Pictorial Record (1982).jpg

Korea - Land of the Morning Calm. On Sunday, 25 June 1950, the morning calm was shattered by the roar of gunfire and clanking tank treads. It was the beginning of three years of conflict up and down the Korean Peninsula, over some of the most rugged terrain and through some of the most vicious weather in the world. On the ground the war would stalemate almost exactly where it had begun - along an imaginary border at the 38th Parallel. But in the air it was total victory for the United Nations forces, most notably the United States Fifth Air Force and naval air forces from U.S. Navy Task Force 77.

Squadron - Aircraft 21 - Steve Birdsall - B-24 Li berator in Action (1979).jpg

The Liberator was conceived in January 1939, when General "Hap" Arnold invited Consolidated to come up with a design superior to Boeing's Flying Fortress. The company's preliminary data was impressive enough to warrant a contract for a prototype, and the design team under Isaac Laddon went to work in earnest. Their first consideration was range, and they selected the wing designed by David Davis for its great efficiency; the wings were shoulder mounted, allowing a capacious fuselage, and a twin rudder and fin assembly was chosen. The aircraft had a tricycle undercarriage and the bomb bay was divided into front and rear compartments, with unique roller-type doors which retracted up the sides from the central keel beam.
In the first Liberator, Consolidated Model 32, there was provision for a few hand-held .30-caliber machine guns, and the gleaming prototype, dubbed XB-24 by the Air Corps, flew for the first time on December 29, 1939. By then the Air Corps had already placed an order for seven YB-24s, and thirty-six B-24As for evaluation. The French and British ordered 284 aircraft between them.

Jeffrey S. Adler - Yankee Merchants and the Making of the Urban West, The Rise and Fall of Antebellu m St. Louis (1991).jpg

01 - USA - Jeffrey S. Adler - Yankee Merchants and the Making of t...n West, The Rise and Fall of Antebellum St. Louis 1991.jpg

In 1850 St. Louis was the commercial capital of the West. By 1860, however, Chicago had supplanted St. Louis and became the great metropolis of the region. This book explains the rapid ascent and the abrupt collapse of the Missouri city. It devotes particular attention to the ways in which northeastern merchants fueled the rise of St. Louis. But unlike most studies of nineteenth-century cities, the book analyzes the influence of national politics on urbanization. It examines the process through which the sectional crisis transformed the role of Yankee merchants in St. Louis's development and thus triggered the fall of the first great city of the trans-Mississippi West.

Alan P. Dobson - Anglo American Relations in the T wentieth Century, Of Friendship, Conflict and the Rise and Decline of Superpowers (1995).jpg

01 - USA - Alan P. Dobson - Anglo American Relations in the Twenti... Conflict and the Rise and Decline of Superpowers 1995.jpg

The relationship between Britain and America has been the most important bilateral relationship the world has ever seen. Anglo-American Relations in the Twentieth Century covers the whole of this century and employs selected historical detail to expose this complex relationship in its true light. Dobson rejects the claim that the US was ever hegemonical. He explores the special relationship between the two nations paying close attention to:

* the First World War
* inter-war economic relations
* the Suez Crisis
* Iran in the 1960s
* Grenada in 1983
* the Gulf War

These events clearly demonstrate that America has had to bargain with Britain, not always get its way. However, the two nations have co-operated in every major crisis from the Great to the Gulf war, and together promoted liberal democracy and capitalism. This story reveals both more interdependence and conflict than has been recognised in the past. Nuclear, intelligence, defence and other links between the USA and Britain continue to this day, but the importance of the `special relationship'' has diminished for both countries. Have common interests disappeared to an extent that the scope for bilateral cooperation has diminished to insignificance?

Clark Kerr - The Gold and the Blue, A Personal Mem oir of the University of California, 1949 - 1967, Volume One, Academic Triumphs (2001).jpg

01 - USA - Clark Kerr - The Gold and the Blue, A Personal Memoir o...ornia, 1949 - 1967, Volume One, Academic Triumphs 2001.jpg

The Los Angeles Times called the first volume of The Gold and the Blue "a major contribution to our understanding of American research universities." This second of two volumes continues the story of one of the last century's most influential figures in higher education. A leading visionary, architect, leader, and fighter for the University of California, Clark Kerr was chancellor of the Berkeley campus from 1952 to 1958 and president of the university from 1958 to 1967. He saw the university through its golden years--a time of both great advancement and great conflict. This absorbing memoir is an intriguing insider's account of how the University of California rose to the peak of scientific and scholarly stature and how, under Kerr's unique leadership, it evolved into the institution it is today. In Volume II: Political Turmoil, Kerr turns to the external and political environment of the 1950s and 1960s, contrasting the meteoric rise of the University of California to the highest pinnacle of academic achievement with its troubled political context. He describes his attempts to steer a middle course between attacks from the political Right and Left and discusses the continuing attacks on the university, and on him personally, by the state Un-American Activities Committee. He provides a unique point of view of the Free Speech Movement on the Berkeley campus in the fall of 1964. He also details the events of January 1967, when he was dismissed as president of the university by the Board of Regents.

Kent Lightfoot - Indians, Missionaries, and Mercha nts, The Legacy of Colonial Encounters on the Cali fornia Frontiers (2007).jpg

01 - USA - Kent Lightfoot - Indians, Missionaries, and Merchants,...f Colonial Encounters on the California Frontiers 2007.jpg

California's earliest European colonists--Russian merchants and Spanish missionaries--depended heavily on Native Americans for labor to build and maintain their colonies, but they did so in very different ways. This richly detailed book brings together disparate skeins of the past--including little-known oral histories, native texts, ethnohistory, and archaeological excavations--to present a vivid new view of how native cultures fared under these two colonial systems. Kent Lightfoot's innovative work, which incorporates the holistic methods of historical anthropology, explores the surprising ramifications of these long-ago encounters for the present-day political status of native people in California. Lightfoot weaves the results of his own significant archaeological research at Fort Ross, a major Russian mercantile colony, into a cross-cultural comparison, showing how these two colonial ventures--one primarily mercantile and one primarily religious--contributed to the development of new kinds of native identities, social forms, and tribal relationships. His lively account includes personal anecdotes from the field and a provocative discussion of the role played by early ethnographers, such as Alfred Kroeber, in influencing which tribes would eventually receive federal recognition. Indians, Missionaries, and Merchants takes a fascinating, yet troubling, look at California's past and its role in shaping the state today.

Ron Rapoport - The Immortal Bobby, Bobby Jones and the Golden Age of Golf (2005).jpg

"A thorough biography of Jones. Solid reporting." (St. Paul Pioneer Press)

"Bobby Jones' golf Grand Slam, achieved 75 years ago, ranks among sports' greatest accomplishments… He did it, but as Ron Rapoport discovered… not without a great deal of suffering, mental and physical." (USA Today)

"The Immortal Bobby is a well-researched and unvarnished biography of Jones by Ron Rapoport, a Chicago Sun-Times sports columnist and National Public Radio commentator. Rapoport excels at adding sociological context to Jones' achievements." (GolfWeek)

There are several Bobby Jones books out this spring commemorating the 75th anniversary of his 1930 Grand Slam, but none so far is better researched, or told with greater detail, than this one by Rapoport, a columnist for the Chicago Sun-Times. Rapoport recounts the more fascinating details of Jones' life after doing scores of interviews and poring over the golfer's many correspondences. Jones was a prolific writer; in fact, his own accounts of his golf matches occasionally appeared in the next day's paper. Rapoport says he "discovered a disparity between the man and the myth that was not always so simple." He recounts that despite his gentlemanly image, Jones could hold a fearsome grudge, as he did against fellow pro Chick Evans, whose every attempt at reconciliation was rebuffed. As for 1930, Rapoport brings much of the detail of the Grand Slam quest back to life. Forgotten, until now, are the numerous near-disasters and the internal turmoil that make Jones' ultimate triumph all the more admirable. (San Diego Union-Tribune)

Rose McDermott - Presidential Leadership, Illness, and Decision Making (2007).jpg

This book is about how illness affects the behavior of American presidents. It discusses four cases in American history of presidential decision making being affected by illness. The main purpose of this book is to show that health problems have a bigger impact on important political decisions than people may have realized. This book differs from the competition because it focuses primarily on foreign policy, where a president has greater freedom of authority, and also features detailed analysis of historical case studies.

Ellen Ullman - Close to the Machine, Technophilia and Its Discontents (2001).jpg

Here is a candid account of the life of a software engineer who runs her own computer consulting business out of a live-work loft in San Francisco’s Multimedia Gulch. Immersed in the abstract world of information, algorithms, and networks, she would like to give in to the seductions of the programmer’s world, where “weird logic dreamers” like herself live “close to the machine.” Still, she is keenly aware that body and soul are not mechanical: desire, love, and the need to communicate face to face don’t easily fit into lines of codes or clicks in a Web browser. At every turn, she finds she cannot ignore the social and philosophical repercussions of her work. As Ullman sees it, the cool world of cyber culture is neither the death of civilization nor its salvation—it is the vulnerable creation of people who are not so sure of just where they’re taking us all.

Ellen Ullman has worked as a software engineer and consultant since 1978. She is the author of The Bug and her writing has been published in Resisting the Virtual Life, Wired Woman, and in Harper’s Magazine. She is a commentator on National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered.”"
