William Chebahtah, Nancy McGown Minor - Chevato, T he Story of the Apache Warrior Who Captured Herman Lehmann.jpg

01 - USA - William Chebahtah, Nancy McGown Minor - Chevato, The St...tory of the Apache Warrior Who Captured Herman Lehmann.jpg

Here is the oral history of the Apache warrior Chevato, who captured eleven-year-old Herman Lehmann from his Texas homestead in May 1870. Lehmann called him “Bill Chiwat” and referred to him as both his captor and his friend. Chevato provides a Native American point of view on both the Apache and Comanche capture of children and specifics regarding the captivity of Lehmann known only to the Apache participants. Yet the capture of Lehmann was only one episode in Chevato’s life.
Born in Mexico, Chevato was a Lipan Apache whose parents had been killed in a massacre by Mexican troops. He and his siblings fled across the Rio Grande and were taken in by the Mescalero Apaches of New Mexico. Chevato became a shaman and was responsible for introducing the Lipan form of the peyote ritual to both the Mescalero Apaches and later to the Comanches and the Kiowas. He went on to become one of the founders of the Native American Church in Oklahoma.
The story of Chevato reveals important details regarding Lipan Apache shamanism and the origin and spread of the type of peyote rituals practiced today in the Native American community. This book also provides a rare glimpse into Lipan and Mescalero Apache life in the late nineteenth century, when the Lipans faced annihilation and the Mescaleros faced the reservation.

Bill Felber - A Game of Brawl, The Orioles, the Be aneaters, and the Battle for the 1897 Pennant (200 7).jpg

Labor disputes, prolonged contract holdouts and widespread suggestions of cheating—Felber's account of the national pastime isn't a telling of current events but of the 1897 pennant race between the Boston Beaneaters and Baltimore Orioles. Stark contrasts in philosophy and team makeup create the best rivalries, and Felber, executive editor of the Manhattan Mercury in Kansas, excels at demonstrating the dissimilarities between these two evenly matched opponents. As Felber points out, Boston's team had ruled the early part of the decade with clean play that mirrored the city's puritanical approach to life, while the Orioles, representing less genteel Baltimore, had won the last three league championships thanks in part to their ungentlemanly methods and roughhouse tactics. As the two teams battle for the pennant up until the last week of the season, Felber gives a spirited retelling of the season, giving life to greedy owners, rabid fans, drunken ballplayers and terrorized umpires, all the while bringing to life an era of baseball when home runs were a rarity, players fielded with no gloves and starting pitchers threw almost 400 innings a season.

Ira Dworkin - Daughter of the Revolution, The Majo r Nonfiction Works of Pauline E. Hopkins (2007).jpg

Pauline E. Hopkins (1859-1930) came to prominence in the early years of the twentieth century as an outspoken writer, editor, and critic. Frequently recognized for her first novel, "Contending Forces", she emerged as one of the most prolific African American women writers of fiction prior to 1930 and is currently one of the most widely read and studied African American novelists from that period. While nearly all of Hopkins's fiction remains in print, there is very little of her nonfiction available. This reader brings together dozens of her hard-to-find essays. Also included are longer nonfiction works such as "Famous Men of the Negro Race", "Famous Women of the Negro Race", "The Dark Races of the Twentieth Century", and "A Primer of Facts Pertaining to the Early Greatness of the African Race" and the "Possibility of Restoration by Its Descendents", some of which are published here for the first time in their entirety. Through these works, along with two juvenile essays from the 1870s, a personal letter, and two speeches, readers encounter a voice that is committed to constructing an international discourse on race, recovering the militant abolitionist tradition to combat Jim Crow, celebrating black political participation during and after the Reconstruction era, articulating the connections between race and labor, and insisting on equal rights for women. Hopkins's writing will challenge contemporary scholars to rethink their understanding of black activism and modernity in the early twentieth century.

Darwin Porter & Danforth Prince - Frommer's Virgin Island, 9th Edition (2007).jpg

Former stamping grounds of some of history’s most famous seafarers, the Virgin Islands are now invaded by thousands of visitors who arrive daily by cruise ship and plane from Miami and Puerto Rico. These green, hilly islands, some governed by the United States and some by Great Britain, number about 100 in all. Most are tiny and virtually uninhabited, except for a few birds or an adventurous boating party stopping off for a little snorkeling or swimming. For the ultimate tropical getaway, it’s possible to rent an entire island for yourself.

Most Virgin Islands natives are descendants of African slaves who worked the sugarcane plantations. In recent years, the local population has swelled with an influx of “down islanders”—people from other Caribbean islands. Many Puerto Ricans have also come here (it’s only 30 min. by air); they are joined by a wide cross section of mainland Americans, including well-heeled yachties and young expats who’ve become addicted to the limin’ lifestyle. The old ways of the islands are all but gone in bustling St. Thomas and St. Croix, but they may still be found in St. John and some pockets of the British Virgins, especially on laid-back Virgin Gorda. Below, you’ll find the highlights of this quintessential vacation paradise.

David Wharton - The Soul of a Small Texas Town, Ph otographs, Memories, and History from McDade (2000 ).jpg

I ordered this book to see how another person's small town experience would compare to my own, even though many miles away and in another state. My greatest fear was that its details would prove boring. To my surprise Mr. Wharton's book held my interest right from the start. His skills as an observer of people and events, a dedicated researcher, an effective storyteller and an accomplished photographer come together beautifully in this unusual volume. From my experience the conclusions he draws from his observations have the ring of truth. In fact, many of them are hauntingly familiar. This book is a must read for anyone who is thinking about moving from urban America to a very small town and is inclined to take an active part in their community.

Dominick J. Cavallo - Fiction of the Past, The Six ties in American History (1999).jpg

Few events during that whirlwind of movements, conflicts and upheaval known as "the sixties" took Americans more by surprise, or were more likely to inspire their rage, than the rebellion of those who were young, white, and college educated. Perhaps none have been more maligned or misunderstood since. In A Fiction of the Past, Dominick Cavallo pushes past the contemporary fog of myth, cold disdain and warm nostalgia that shrouds the radical youth culture of the '60s. He explores how the furiously chaotic sixties sprang from the comparatively placid forties and fifties. The book digs beyond the post-World War II decades and seeks the historical sources of the youth culture in the distant American past. Cavallo shows how the sixties' most radical ideas and values were deeply etched in the American soul.

Donald Kirk - Looted, The Philippines After the Ba ses (1998).jpg

In Looted, veteran correspondent Donald Kirk cuts through the mystique of democracy that has shrouded the Philippines since the American withdrawal from its military bases there in 1991 and 1992, revealing the corruption that exists beneath the surface. Making use of his extensive firsthand knowledge of the region, Kirk recounts the drama of one of history's greatest volcanic eruptions as just the beginning of a period of looting and exploitation. He provides details and revelations of the Philippine role in the stripdown of Clark Air Base and the subversion of Subic Bay to serve the purposes of one ambitious politician, and he offers a disturbing analysis of the efforts to resolve Muslim and Communist revolt.

01 - USA - Mark Colvin - Penitentiaries, Reformatories and Chain ...story of Punishment in Nineteenth Century America 1997.jpg

The definition of punishment in America has been subjected to a variety of changes and has served as the basis for much debate over the course of U.S. history. Just how far the reach of penal authority should extend, and exactly what limits to it should be imposed, are questions explored here by sociologist Dr. Mark Colvin, who has extensive experience working in penitentiaries and correction agencies.

Derek Hughes - Versions of Blackness, Key Texts on Slavery from the Seventeenth Century (2007).jpg

Aphra Behn's novel Oroonoko (1688) is one of the most widely studied works of seventeenth-century literature, because of its powerful representation of slavery and complex portrayal of ways in which differing races and cultures - European, Black African, and Native American - observe and misinterpret each other. This edition presents a new edition of Oroonoko, with unprecedentedly full and informative commentary, along with complete texts of three major British seventeenth-century works concerned with race and colonialism: Henry Neville's The Isle of Pines (1668), Behn's Abdelazer (1676), and Thomas Southerne's tragedy Oroonoko (1696). It combines these with a rich anthology of European discussions of slavery, racial difference, and colonial conquest from the mid-sixteenth century to the time of Behn's death. Many are taken from important works that have not hitherto been easily available, and the collection offers an unrivaled resource for studying the culture that produced Britain's first major fictions of slavery.

Kumiko Nemoto - Racing Romance, Love, Power, and D esire Among Asian American-White Couples (2009).jpg

Racing Romance sheds light on the bonds between whites and Asian Americans, an important topic that has not garnered well-deserved attention until now. Using primary source narratives and interviews, Kumiko Nemoto addresses the contradictions and tensions-a result of race, class, and gender-that Asian Americans and whites experience. Racing Romance reveals how "progressive" interracial relationships remain shaped by the logic of patriarchy and gender inherent to the ideal of marriage, family, and nation in America, even as this ideal is juxtaposed with discourses of multiculturalism and color blindness.

01 - USA - Regina M. Marchi - Day of the Dead in the USA, The Mig...ation and Transformation of a Cultural Phenomenon 2009.jpg

The tribute, "el Dia de los Muertos," has become popular since the 1970s when Latino activists and artists in America began expanding "Day of the Dead" north of the border with public, and often artistic, expressions. Regina M. Marchi combines ethnography, historical research, oral history, and cultural analysis to explore the transformations that occur when the tradition is embraced by the mainstream. Day of the Dead in the USA provides insight into the power of ritual to create community, transmit oppositional messages, and advance educational, political, and economic goals.

Jeffrey Carlstrom, Cynthia Furse - The History of Emigration Canyon, Gateway to Salt Lake Valley (20 03).jpg

This comprehensive and well-illustrated history of one of the more significant historical areas in Utah offers a case study of the development of a scenic, rural area near a major western metropolis. Emigration Canyon was the original route, opened by the Donner party, through the Wasatch Mountains into Salt Lake Valley. It subsequently was the route for pioneer settlers, overland wagon trains, freight and mail lines, and the pony express, and it remained an important transportation corridor even after the development of alternative roads. Subsequently, the canyon provided stone, timber, and grazing resources for the developing city below it; began to be homesteaded; provided a route for one of the Wasatch Range more interesting narrow gauge railroads; and became a resort community. Its history since the Great Depression has been one of gradual development as a Salt Lake City suburb. Because of its location in the mountains, it has attracted local city dwellers as visitors or residents, and because of its strategic position above the city, it has continued to capture the attention of government and politicians, as repeated contests over water, development, annexation, and zoning of the canyon have shown.
