A thorough analysis of where U.S./European relations have gone wrong--and how to set them right
We have entered a new age of political engagement, one in which the ideological schism between Europe and the United States has widened to levels not seen since World War II. While many Europeans accuse the U.S. of an overly simplistic, militaristic approach to foreign policy, Europe's reluctance to fully support U.S. efforts against hostile states such as Iraq has led to American mistrust, resentment, and anger.
Written by renowned Brookings Institution fellows Philip Gordon and Jeremy Shapiro, Allies at War examines the current state of the fragile American/European alliance including:
The evolution of NATO in the aftermath of the cold war
Tensions exacerbated by President Bush's refusal to ratify, or even recognize, agreements considered vital in Europe
Israeli/Palestinian violence, and the sharply different opinions on why it exists and how it can be stopped
Today's increasingly tenuous global environment cries out for reasoned analysis and reasonable answers. Allies at War provides a compelling look at the deepening division in the longstanding U.S./European alliance and presents a solid, studied framework for what must be done--soon

The book contains three diaries and an introduction. The introduction itself is an excellent commentary on the views held by leaders of both sides of the Northwest rebellion. It is especially sympathetic to the situation of the Plains Indians and their treatment by the government and local agents. There is a balanced assessment of the motives behind the moves, counter moves, and lack of motion by the leaders of the opposing forces.
The first diary, Ord's, is by a Canadian from Ontario who returns the English contempt for colonials in kind. He has no respect for Middleton, commanding general of the forces attacking Batoche, and little for the Metis and Indians against whom they are to fight. The other two are no less biased and prejudiced. They all display a very self-centred and self-satisfied attitude. Each occupied a different position in the fighting, Ord and Burden at Batoche, and Cassels at Battleford and Cut Knife Hill. Each thinks his own group had the worst assignments and overcame the worst conditions.
A quotation to give the flavour of the whole:". . .and a brilliant and most intelligent lot they are: a major-general, a captain of Royal Engineers, and infantry lieutenant, an Indian Department official, and a major of militia, each knowing less than the other."
The second man continues in much the same vein but his story is based on his experiences defending Battleford. The third man is, like the first, involved in the action at Batoche and a little less critical. He was with French's Scouts and saw more action than the others.
It becomes interesting, then, to read of how history is recorded, by different persons, from different points of view, and with different motives. If anyone is studying Canada's growth to independence through fighting in World War II, this is a good precursor of colonial and imperialist views and of the familiar story of Canadian soldiers' waiting for the British generals to make up their minds.

A brilliant and provocative analysis of twentieth-century American culture, highbrow to low
With amazing creativity, clarity, and wit, Susman takes us on a provocative tour of the highlights of American culture. By looking at all types of twentieth-century culture—highbrow, lowbrow, and middlebrow—Susman shows how culture itself has become a battleground for competing visions of American life.

In this groundbreaking book, Dusinberre conducts an intense investigation of slavery in the rice swamps of South Carolina and Georgia. Concentrated there were some of the richest--and most expansive--plantations of the South. It was an unhealthy region for both blacks and whites; slavery, in the swamps, was administered with particular severity. Focusing on three of the largest plantations, Dusinberre presents portraits of individuals, both black and white, who personify and exemplify the harsh realities of the slave system. Them Dark Days offers a vivid reconstruction of slavery in action; while it conveys the atmosphere and daily routine of the plantations, it also sets the analysis of slave culture within a wider context of health, discipline, privilege, and psychology.

"Rooted in Place brings the texture of a southern family epic and the sociological imagination together with intellectual courage and intimacy. Absorbing and original."—Carol Stack, author of All Our Kin and Call To Home
Throughout the twentieth century, millions of African Americans, many from impoverished, historically black counties, left the South to pursue what they thought would be a better life in the North. But not everyone moved away during what scholars have termed the Great Migration. What has life been like for those who stayed? Why would they remain in a place that many outsiders would see as grim, depressed, economically marginal, and where racial prejudice continues to place them at a disadvantage?
Through oral history William Falk tells the story of an extended family in the Georgia-South Carolina lowcountry. Family members talk about schooling, relatives, work, religion, race, and their love of the place where they have lived for generations. This "conversational ethnography" argues that an interconnection between race and place in the area helps explain African Americans’ loyalty to it. In Colonial County, blacks historically enjoyed a numerical majority as well as deep cultural roots and longstanding webs of social connections that, Falk finds, more than outweigh the racism they face and the economic disadvantages they suffer.

Banks, founder of the American Indian Movement, tells his story for the first time and presents an insider's look the group and its protest events--including the 1973 standoff at Wounded Knee--enhanced by dramatic photographs.
A compelling account of one of the most influential Indian leaders in the United States, this autobiography describes how Banks was taken from his family as a young child and placed into a government boarding school by the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) in an attempt to "acculturate" him. Nine years later, he returned to the Ojibwa "rez" only to find that he had forgotten his native Anishinabe language and many of his culture’s traditions. "My teachers … had made me into an ‘apple’—red outside but white inside." Nonetheless, Banks stayed for two years, reconnecting with family and relearning skills like rabbit trapping, before he joined the Air Force in search of "three meals and warm place to sleep." When he returned from his tour in Japan in the late 1950s, he re-experienced the prejudice, brutality and poverty that were preying upon his people in America. Angered by what he saw, Banks founded the American Indian Movement (AIM) with the help of his friends. His retelling of these events reads as seamlessly as a great campfire story (or a well-edited oral transcript). He takes readers deep inside the traditional Sun Dances and Sweat Houses of his Ojibwa Tribe and deep into the action of the Trail of Broken Treaties—a peaceful march on Washington that turned into a historic, six-day takeover of the BIA headquarters. Bank’s 11-year run from the FBI, his many wives and children and the strategies of AIM all find their place in his winding narrative, making this volume an important addition to this history of Native American and civil rights movements in the United States. 73 b&w photos.

In the years between 1763 and 1890, what began as thirteen British colonies clinging to the eastern seaboard of North America expanded into a sprawling independent nation that stretched 3,000 miles from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. The story of the westward expansion of the United States is at
once a romantic saga of human accomplishment and a tragic account of human cruelty. The steady march of American settlement into the West created national heroes and helped define the national character. Mountain men, miners, explorers, pioneers, cowboys, and outlaws lived such colorful and independent lives that their exploits continue to be celebrated in fiction and in film into the twentieth-first century.

In particular, they examine training service providers and methods of delivering training services, including the use of individual training accounts and eligible training provider lists. Performance management under WIA is examined, as well as the effectiveness of training programs. In addition, public training programs are compared to private training provided in the United States and to public training programs offered in other industrial nations.

Corbin Harney's long life encompassed remarkable changes in the lives of Native Americans and in the technological and political development of the world. He was born into an impoverished Western Shosone family on the Nevada-Idaho border. As an adult, Harney found his calling as a traditional healer and spiritual leader. Soon he became involved in the Shoshone struggle for civil rights, including their efforts to protect and heal their traditional lands. He also became a leader of the international antinuclear movement. "The Nature Way" is a rich compendium of Corbin Harney's experience and wisdom. His voice is one of the clearest expressions yet of the values, concerns, and spirituality of contemporary Native America.

In the early 1970s, the federal government began recognizing self-determination for American Indian nations. As sovereign entities, Indian nations have been able to establish policies concerning health care, education, religious freedom, law enforcement, gaming, and taxation. Yet these gains have not gone unchallenged. Starting in the late 1980s, states have tried to regulate and profit from casino gambling on Indian lands. Treaty rights to hunt, fish, and gather remain hotly contested, and traditional religious practices have been denied protection. Tribal courts struggle with state and federal courts for jurisdiction. David E. Wilkins and K. Tsianina Lomawaima discuss how the political rights and sovereign status of Indian nations have variously been respected, ignored, terminated, and unilaterally modified by federal lawmakers as a result of the ambivalent political and legal status of tribes under U.S. law.

This first systematic critique on the rhetoric of 21 presidents shows how political constraints shaped rhetoric and how oratory shaped politics. An introduction places American public address in the context of classical rhetorical practices and theory and sets the stage for the bio-critical essays about presidents ranging from Washington to Clinton. Experts analyze the style and use of language, important speeches and their impact, and their ethical ramifications. Each essay on a president also keys major speeches to authoritative texts and offers a chronology and bibliography of primary and secondary sources. For students, teachers, and professionals in American public address, political communication, and the presidency.

"Lost in Austin" is fascinating reading for anyone who cherishes nostalgic memories of living in a small town, or who contemplates moving to one. It offers an engaging portrait of a Nevada that exists far from the glitz and glitter of Las Vegas and Reno, 'a happy Bermuda Triangle' where rugged individualism and community spirit flourish amidst sagebrush and vast open spaces.
