01 - USA - Katherine Pandora - Rebels within the Ranks, Psycholog...rity and Democratic Realities in New Deal America 1997.jpg

This book examines the work of social and personality psychologists who, in the 1930s, criticized the increasingly restrictive vision of scientific life being promoted by neobehaviorist social scientists. This critique has been overlooked by historians who have concentrated on the rise of neobehaviorism, rather than the challenges advanced by such "rebels within the ranks" as Gordon Allport, Gardner Murphy, and Lois Barclay Murphy. All three contributed to ongoing public and professional debates about democracy and the authority of scientific knowledge in New Deal America.

Keller Easterling - Organization Space, Landscapes , Highways, and Houses in America (1999).jpg

"In its innovations of form, its depth of research, its acute analysis, and its enormous relevance, this is a remarkable work. Keller Easterling has written one of the most original works about the American environment I've ever read." -- Michael Sorkin, architect, Institute for Urbanism, Vienna

The dominant architectures in our culture of development consist of generic protocols for building offices, airports, houses, and highways. For Keller Easterling these organizational formats are not merely the context of design efforts--they are the design. Bridging the gap between architecture and infrastructure, Easterling views architecture as part of an ecology of interrelationships and linkages, and she treats the expression of organizational character as part of the architectural endeavor.

Easterling also makes the case that these organizational formats are improvisational and responsive to circumstantial change, to mistakes, anomalies, and seemingly illogical market forces. By treating these irregularities opportunistically, she offers architects working within the customary development protocols new sites for making and altering space.

By showing the reciprocal relations between systems of thinking and modes of designing, Easterling establishes unexpected congruencies between natural and built environments, virtual and physical systems, highway and communication networks, and corporate and spatial organizations. She frames her unconventional notion of site not in terms of singular entities, but in terms of relationships between multiple sites that are both individually and collectively adjustable.

Kirstin Miller - Village Bottoms Cultural District at Pine Street (2009).jpg

The purpose of this pilot application is to demonstrate an ecologically, economically and culturally sustainable approach to addressing climate change through land use and transportation planning. The pilot proposes a regional and integrated approach to transitioning from the current land- and energy-intensive patterns of urban sprawl and automobile dependence, towards compact, pedestrian- and transit-oriented communities linked by transit, trails and greenways, and restored natural corridors. Urban Villages offer residents convenience and cost savings, thanks to access by proximity to everyday retail, services, jobs, transportation, and recreational needs. The approach focuses on creating thriving local economies, decreasing the need for commuting and for long distance transport of goods and materials. The model can be adapted to other Bay Area cities, helping the region reduce greenhouse gas emissions through reductions in vehicle miles traveled and land use planning, as mandated by SB 375 and AB 32.

Madeline Katt Theriault - Moose to Moccasins, Stor y of Ka Kita Wa Pa No Kwe (2007).jpg

Having been born in a tent on Bear Island, Lake Temagami, in 1908, Madeline Katt Theriault could recall an earlier independent and traditional First Nations lifestyle. In this book, the late author proudly tells of her youth and coming of age by sharing her vivid memories and drawing on exceptional old family photographs. In her own words, she writes of a time long ago - a time that was difficult, but not without personal rewards.

Peter Calthorpe, William Fulton - The Regional Cit y (2001).jpg

Most Americans today do not live in discrete cities and towns, but rather in an aggregation of cities and suburbs that forms one basic economic, multi-cultural, environmental and civic entity. These "regional cities" have the potential to significantly improve the quality of our lives-to provide interconnected and diverse economic centers, transportation choices, and a variety of human-scale communities. In The Regional City, two of the most innovative thinkers in the field of land use planning and design offer a detailed look at this new metropolitan form and explain how regional-scale planning and design can help direct growth wisely and reverse current trends in land use. The authors:

* discuss the nature and underpinnings of this new metropolitan form
* present their view of the policies and physical design principles required for metropolitan areas to transform themselves into regional cities
* document the combination of physical design and social and economic policies that are being used across the country
* consider the main factors that are shaping metropolitan regions today, including the maturation of sprawling suburbs and the renewal of urban neighborhoods

Featuring full-color graphics and in-depth case studies, The Regional Cityoffers a thorough examination of the concept of regional planning along with examples of successful initiatives from around the country. It will be must reading for planners, architects, landscape architects, local officials, real estate developers, community development professionals, and for students in architecture, urban planning, and policy.

Philip Jodidio - Richard Meier (1996).jpg

This new title in the Modern Masters series is dedicated to the distinguished American architect, and includes an introductory essay by Kenneth Frampton, one of the most prestigious names in the field of architecture history. This complete monograph presents 89 of Meier's buildings, documenting the principal stages of Meier's career in chronological order, from his early private homes and residential buildings - such as the two large complexes of Twin Parks, Bronx, New York, and the Bronx Development Center - to recent major projects in the United States and in several European countries, including Italy. Among the well-known works in this volume are the Getty Center in Los Angeles, the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art, and the church of Dives in Misericordia, Rome. In the early 1970s, Meier was one of the "New York Five," an informal group of East Coast architects who shared a preference for new and original contributions to the modern tradition and shaped an alternative to the "gray" architecture that dominated highrise East Coast buildings at the time.

Mary Hitchcock - Two Women in the Klondike (2005).jpg

Two Women in the Klondike created a sensation when it was first published in 1899. The idea that two well-bred socialites could survive the dangers of the north thrilled nineteenth- century readers from San Francisco to New York.
When Mary Hitchcock heard about the discovery of gold in the Klondike in 1898, she left her privileged city life for the wilds of Alaska, planning to stake her own claims. She persuaded her friend Edith Van Buren to accompany her, and the two began preparations for "roughing it." The "necessities" that they brought up the Yukon River to Dawson City, Canada, included a portable bowling alley, an ice cream maker, a Great Dane named Ivan, and a full-size circus tent.
Hitchcock relates the struggles, surprises, and pleasures of traveling in the late nineteenth century in her trademark style. She describes in diary form the people she met and her impressions of rural Alaska and Dawson City. Invaluable for its detailed descriptions of manners, food, and personalities, Hitchcock¹s account of the Klondike Gold Rush is an outrageous adventure for general readers, armchair travelers, and anyone interested in the lives of American women in the late 1800s.
This new, abridged version includes a map of Hitchcock¹s northern travels and an introduction by Terrence Cole, professor of history at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

Charles W. Calomiris - U.S. Bank Deregulation in Historical Perspective (2000).jpg

This book shows how deregulation is transforming the size, structure, and geographic range of U.S. banks, the scope of banking services, and the nature of bank-customer relationships. Over the past two decades the characteristics that had made American banks different from other banks throughout the world--a fragmented geographical structure of the industry, which restricted the scale of banks and their ability to compete with one another, and strict limits on the kinds of products and services commercial banks could offer--virtually have been eliminated. Understanding the origins and persistence of the unique banking regulations that defined U.S. banking for over a century lends an important perspective on the economic and political causes and consequences of the current process of deregulation.

01 - USA - John Taylor Gatto - The Underground History of America...nvestigation Into the Problem of Modern Schooling 2000.jpg

I would have given this book 5 stars for all of the little-known facts Gatto unearths about the history of education. Industrialists, religious fanatics, eugenicists, and various kinds of psychologists are all shown to have worked their agendas into the American public school system. But I can't give this book 5 stars, because it also reads like a conspiracy theory. It's poorly organized and tends to draw sweeping conclusions based on quotations, events, or facts taken out of context.

Harold J. Weiss, Jr. - Yours to Command, The Life and Legend of Texas Ranger Captain Bill McDonald ( 2009).jpg

Captain Bill McDonald (1852-1918) is the most prominent of the "Four Great Captains" of Texas Ranger history. His career straddled the changing scene from the nineteenth to the twentieth centuries. In 1891 McDonald became captain of Company B of the Frontier Battalion of the Texas Rangers. "Captain Bill" and the Rangers under his command took part in a number of incidents from the Panhandle region to South Texas: the Fitzsimmons-Maher prizefight in El Paso, the Wichita Falls bank robbery, the murders by the San Saba Mob, the Reese-Townsend feud at Columbus, the lynching of the Humphries clan, the Conditt family murders near Edna, the Brownsville Raid of 1906, and the shootout with Mexican Americans near Rio Grande City. In all these endeavors, only one Ranger lost his life under McDonald's command. McDonald's reputation as a gunman rested upon his easily demonstrated markmanship, a flair for using his weapons to intimidate opponents, and the publicity given his numerous exploits. His ability to handle mobs resulted in a classic tale told around campfires: one riot, one Ranger. His admirers rank him as one of the great captains of Texas Ranger history. His detractors see him as an irresponsible lawman who accepted questionable information, precipitated violence, hungered for publicity, and related tall tales that cast himself in the hero's role. Harold J. Weiss, Jr., seeks to find the true Bill McDonald and sort fact from myth. McDonald's motto says it all: 'No man in the wrong can stand up against a fellow that's in the right and keeps on 'a-comin'.'
