Howard Zinn - A People's History of The United Sta tes (2003).jpg

According to this classic of revisionist American history, narratives of national unity and progress are a smoke screen disguising the ceaseless conflict between elites and the masses whom they oppress and exploit. Historian Zinn sides with the latter group in chronicling Indians' struggle against Europeans, blacks' struggle against racism, women's struggle against patriarchy, and workers' struggle against capitalists. First published in 1980, the volume sums up decades of post-war scholarship into a definitive statement of leftist, multicultural, anti-imperialist historiography. This edition updates that project with new chapters on the Clinton and Bush presidencies, which deplore Clinton's pro-business agenda, celebrate the 1999 Seattle anti-globalization protests and apologize for previous editions' slighting of the struggles of Latinos and gays. Zinn's work is an vital corrective to triumphalist accounts, but his uncompromising radicalism shades, at times, into cynicism. Zinn views the Bill of Rights, universal suffrage, affirmative action and collective bargaining not as fundamental (albeit imperfect) extensions of freedom, but as tactical concessions by monied elites to defuse and contain more revolutionary impulses; voting, in fact, is but the most insidious of the "controls." It's too bad that Zinn dismisses two centuries of talk about "patriotism, democracy, national interest" as mere "slogans" and "pretense," because the history he recounts is in large part the effort of downtrodden people to claim these ideals for their own.

Marilyn B. Young, John ]. Fitzgerald, A. Tom G mnfeld - The Vietnam War, A History in Documents (2003).jpg

Grade 7 Up-This "documentary history" provides a social and political context for the conflict, with no military history and little coverage of the actual fighting. Instead, it focuses on the official documents, speeches, quotes, media commentary, and memoirs that trace the history of French and, later, American involvements in South East Asia. The documents are skillfully tied together by brief text that gives good background information. The authors primarily credit gross miscalculations on the part of American policy makers, such as John Foster Dulles and Robert S. McNamara, in helping lead the country into this conflict and are often critical of the United States politicians. A concluding section recounts a Vietnamese woman's return visit to her homeland long after the war, describes the changes in U.S./Vietnamese relations and attitudes, and looks at the role of the war in limiting the expansion of Communism. Related topics, such as the Civil Rights movement, Vietnam Veterans against the War, and the Kent State shootings, are covered, and ample information on Ho Chi Minh is included. The book is well balanced in showing both sides; the tragedy of the war i+s underlined by truly awful statistics on the amount of munitions used, the destruction of Vietnam, and the loss of life. Good-quality, black-and-white photos and illustrations are plentiful and informative. Comparable in style and reading level to John M. Dunn's A History of U.S. Involvement (Lucent, 2001), this excellent title could be used in conjunction with William Dudley's The Vietnam War:

Thomas C. Reeves - Twentieth Century America, A Br ief History (2000).jpg

Grade 9 Up-Reeves competently describes the changes that have occurred in the United States over the last century as our country has grown from a brash newcomer among the older European nations into the lone superpower and global economic dynamo that we are today. All of the major issues and events are touched upon in this clearly written, though somewhat bland recital. The text is arranged in short chronological chapters and is accompanied by a sprinkling of black-and-white photos. There is thorough coverage and thoughtful analysis of each presidency from Theodore Roosevelt to Bill Clinton. The changing roles of women, the recognition of the civil rights of African Americans, and the gradual improvements in their standard of living and access to higher education are adequately covered. The sexual revolution and other counterculture influences of the '60s and '70s are duly noted. "Monicagate" and the impeachment of Bill Clinton receive a brief, but clear explanation as well. The U.S. intervention in Kosovo and the bombing of Yugoslavia conclude the volume. A short, helpful list of suggested readings follows each chapter. Students should find this a useful no-frills introduction to the topic, adequate for an introductory course or quick reference. Harold Evans's much larger and more attractively packaged The American Century (Knopf, 1998) provides similar coverage with a multitude of fascinating photos and an extensive bibliography, but its size makes it more suitable for reference.

Adriane Lentz-Smith - Freedom Struggles, African A mericans and World War I (2009).jpg

For many of the 200,000 black soldiers sent to Europe with the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I, encounters with French civilians and colonial African troops led them to imagine a world beyond Jim Crow. They returned home to join activists working to make that world real. In narrating the efforts of African American soldiers and activists to gain full citizenship rights as recompense for military service, Adriane Lentz-Smith illuminates how World War I mobilized a generation.

Black and white soldiers clashed as much with one another as they did with external enemies. Race wars within the military and riots across the United States demonstrated the lengths to which white Americans would go to protect a carefully constructed caste system. Inspired by Woodrow Wilson’s rhetoric of self-determination but battered by the harsh realities of segregation, African Americans fought their own “war for democracy,” from the rebellions of black draftees in French and American ports to the mutiny of Army Regulars in Houston, and from the lonely stances of stubborn individuals to organized national campaigns. African Americans abroad and at home reworked notions of nation and belonging, empire and diaspora, manhood and citizenship. By war’s end, they ceased trying to earn equal rights and resolved to demand them.

This beautifully written book reclaims World War I as a critical moment in the freedom struggle and places African Americans at the crossroads of social, military, and international history.

John P. Langellier - Uncle Sam's Little Wars, Span ish-American War, Philippine Insurrection and Boxe r Rebellion 1898-1902 (1999).jpg

01 - USA - John P. Langellier - Uncle Sams Little Wars, Spanish-A...ippine Insurrection and Boxer Rebellion 1898-1902 1999.jpg

One hundred years ago American colonial ambition found expression in the seizure and occupation of Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Philippines, and intervention in the Boxer Rebellion in China. These military enterprises cast the American Army in a dramatic new role, and from policing the American interior the G.I.s had to suddenly adapt when the United States emerged as an international power with interests in far-flung corners of the world.

Uncle Sam's Little Wars is a superb pictorial history of the American troops' arms, uniforms and equipment in this age of transformation. With more than one hundred rare photographs and captions by a leading expert in American military history, this volume is a valuable addition to the series and a remarkable study of an age which incorporated the spirit of nineteenth-century warfare and the technology of modern aggression.

Osprey - Men-at-Arms 217 - Kenneth Conboy - The Wa r In Laos 1960-75 (1989).jpg

From 1893 Laos remained a relatively peaceful French protectorate until the Second World War, when it was seized by Japan. As the war drew to a close, the Japanese encouraged the growth of nationalist movements to forestall the return of French power. Despite these efforts the French re-entered Laos. Soundly defeated, the Free Laos moved to Thailand. In 1949 a splinter fraction made its way into northern Vietnam and contacted the anti-French Viet Minh forces. Commonly as the Pathet Lao, and trained and equipped by the Viet Minh, these forces would eventually plunge Laos into another bloody war.

Osprey - Men-at-Arms 383 - Rene Chartrand - Coloni al American Troops 1610-1774 (3) (2003).jpg

From the earliest English settlements the survival of the infant colonies in North America depended upon local militias. Before the mid-18th century royal troops were seldom shipped out from Britain, and the main burden of successive wars with the American Indians, and with Britain's colonial rivals France and Spain, fell upon locally raised units, which also fought alongside the Crown forces during the major operations of the French-Indian War of the 1750s. This final book of a fascinating three-part study covers the militias and provincial troops raised in the Carolinas, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Georgia, Nova Scotia, Hudson's Bay and Quebec Province; and also Rangers, and colors and standards.

William Henry Chamberlin - America's Second Crusad e (2008).jpg

In America's Second Crusade, William Henry Chamberlin offers his perspective as a seasoned journalist on the United States' involvement in World War II. Written only five years after the unconditional surrenders of Germany and Japan, the book is a window into its time. Fresh from eliminating threats from fascist regimes, the United States then faced threats from the totalitarian Soviet Union. Chamberlin's analysis of the war is colored by his concern over the Gold War conflict." "The book focuses on the precursors to World War II and the war's aftermath, rather than on the events of the war itself, Chamberlin begins with an analysis of World War I and its consequences and describes the factors that led to the outbreak of war in Europe during the 1950s. He then turns to World War II and presents his opinions on the conflict at home regarding direct U.S. engagement in the war. He details the events and diplomatic decisions that eventually led to the U.S. entrance into the Atlantic and Pacific conflicts.

Aida D. Donald - Lion in the White House, A Life o f Theodore Roosevelt (2007).jpg

The extraordinary life of the man who reshaped the presidency and forged modern America--chronicled in an exhilarating, lyrical new biography.

New York State Assemblyman, Assistant Secretary of the Navy, New York City Police Commissioner, Governor of New York, Vice President and, at forty-two, the youngest President ever--in his own words, Theodore Roosevelt "rose like a rocket." He was also a cowboy, a soldier, a historian, an intrepid explorer, and an unsurpassed environmentalist--all in all, perhaps the most accomplished Chief Executive in our nation's history. In Lion in the White House: A Life of Theodore Roosevelt, historian Aida Donald masterfully chronicles the life of this first modern president.

TR's accomplishments in office were immense. As President, Roosevelt redesigned the office of Chief Executive and the workings of the Republican Party to meet the challenges of the new industrial economy. Believing that the emerging aristocracy of wealth represented a genuine threat to democracy, TR broke trusts to curb the rapacity of big business. He improved economic and social conditions for the average American. Roosevelt built the Panama Canal and engaged the country in world affairs, putting a temporary end to American isolationism. And he won the Nobel Peace Prize--the only sitting president ever so honored.

Throughout his public career, TR fought valiantly to steer the GOP back to its noblest ideals as embodied by Abraham Lincoln. Alas, his hopes for his party were quashed by the GOP's strong rightward turn in the years after he left office. But his vision for America lives on.

In lapidary prose, this concise biography recounts the courageous life of one of the greatest leaders our nation has ever known.

Aleta Feinsod Cane, Susan Alves - The Only Efficie nt Instrument, American Women Writers & The Period ical (2001).jpg

01 - USA - Aleta Feinsod Cane, Susan Alves - The Only Efficient In...nstrument, American Women Writers The Periodical 2001.jpg

Many farsighted women writers in nineteenth-century America made thoughtful and sustained use of newspapers and magazines to effect social and political change. The Only Efficient Instrument American Women Writers and the Periodical, 1837-1916 examines these pioneering efforts and demonstrates that American women had a vital presence in the political and intellectual communities of their day.

Women writers and editors of diverse social backgrounds and ethnicities realized very early that the periodical was a powerful tool for education and social reform it was the only efficient instrument to make themselves and their ideas better known. This collection of critical essays explores American women's engagement with the periodical press and shows their threefold use of the periodical: for social and political advocacy; for the critique of gender roles and social expectations; and for refashioning the periodical as a more inclusive genre that both articulated and obscured such distinctions as class, race, and gender.

Including essays on familiar figures such as Margaret Fuller, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Kate Chopin, and Charlotte Perkins Gilman, The Only Efficient Instrument also focuses on writings from lesser-known authors, including Native American Zitkala-SS, Mexican American Mar'a Cristina Mena, African American Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, and the Lowell factory workers. Covering nearly eighty years of publishing history, from the press censure of the outspoken Angelina Grimke in 1837 to the last issue of Gilman's Forerunner in 1916, this fascinating collection breaks new ground in the study of the women's rights movement in America.

Barry Keith Grant - John Ford's Stagecoach (2002).jpg

Stagecoach is one of the classics of Hollywood cinema. Made in 1939, it revitalized the Western genre, served as a milestone for John Ford's career, and made John Wayne a star. This volume offers a rich overview of the film in essays by six leading film critics. Approaching Stagecoach from a variety of critical perspectives, it considers it within the contexts of authorship, genre, American history and culture. Blair Howard - Adventure Guides, The Georgia & Car olina Coasts (2000).jpg

Adventure Guide discusses the relevant information, the history, hotels and restaurants, transportation and shopping options, but its heart belongs to the outdoors, the fishing, snorkeling, hiking, canoeing, photography, and bird-watching--the oft-neglected treasures of the U.S. South. Blair Howard provides details that are often omitted from other guides: visiting private Barrier islands, the best film to use, and successful seashell collecting tips. The city pleasures of Charleston and Savannah aren't ignored, but the guide's geared to exploring the wild dunes along with the historic districts, and the joys of the Okefenokee Swamp and The Outer Banks get top billing.
A complete revision of this popular best-seller that covers Beaufort, Myrtle Beach, New Bern, Savannah, the Sea Islands, Hilton Head, Brunswick and the Golden Isles, Okefenokee Swamp, the Outer Banks, Charleston, Cape Hatteras and all the places in-between.

Charles W. Dunn - The Enduring Reagan (2009).jpg

A former Sunday school teacher and Hollywood actor, Ronald Reagan was an unlikely candidate for president. His charisma, conviction, and leadership earned him the governorship of California, from which he launched his successful bid to become the fortieth president of the United States in 1980. Reagan's political legacy continues to be the standard by which all conservatives are judged. In The Enduring Reagan, editor Charles W. Dunn brings together eight prominent scholars to examine the political career and legacy of Ronald Reagan. This anthology offers a bold reassessment of the Reagan years and the impact they had on the United States and the world.

Chelle Koster Walton - Adventure Guide to Tampa Ba y & Florida's West Coast (2005).jpg

A fully updated and expanded edition of the popular guidebook previously called the Adventure Guide to Florida's West Coast. Visit vibrant cities, charming hometowns, nature preserves, wilderness areas and the famous white-sand beaches of Florida's Gulf shore. The book covers all of Tampa Bay/St. Petersburg and north to Withlacoochee State Forest, and south to Sanibel Island, Naples and Everglades National Park. Canoeing the Everglades, fishing on Marco Island, biking in Boca Grande, diving with manatees in Crystal River, sailing along St. Pete Beach, theater-going in Sarasota, shopping the sponge markets of Greek-flavored Tarpon Springs, exploring the history of Tampa's Latin Ybor City - it's all here! Town and regional maps.

This easy-to-use book is packed with practical information and enticing facts that make it fun to read: "Sarasota owes its development and artistic reputation to, ironically, the circus, which wintered there beginning in the late 1800s. In contrast to circus raucousness, however, John Ringling was a man swayed by esthetics. The art he loved had a bit of three-ring showiness to it, nonetheless, as shown by the baroque Italianate palace he built himself in Sarasota." A clean, attractive layout makes it easy to find what you're looking for within each of the book's six sections, whether it be suggestions for finding the best food, lodging, kayaking, fishing, or shopping; even driving directions are included.
