Gordon S. Wood - Empire of Liberty, A History of t he Early Republic, 1789-1815 (2009).jpg

A new addition to the Oxford History of the United States, Wood's superb book brings together much of what historians now know about the first quarter-century of the nation's history under the Constitution. Acknowledged as the leading historian of the period, Wood brings authority and easy style to a tough task—wrestling into order a period of unusual anxiety, confusion, crisis and unbridled growth in the nation's affairs. The emergence of democracy and individualism is his overarching theme. No surprise there, for he's the author of a celebrated work (The Radicalism of the American Revolution) on just that topic. In this new work, he concentrates more on events, institutions, politics and diplomacy than in his earlier books yet proves himself a master of these topics, too. He offers no newfangled approaches, no strongly stated positions, no contests with other historians. Instead, we get the distillation of a lifetime's study and reflection about the era between Washington's presidency and the end of the War of 1812. A triumph of the historian's art, Wood's book will not soon be supplanted.

Ronald L. Jones - Plant Life of Kentucky, An Illus trated Guide to the Vascular Flora (2005).jpg

Plant Life of Kentucky is the first comprehensive account of the native and naturalized ferns, flowering herbs, and woody plants of Kentucky.
Ronald L. Jones has compiled detailed identification keys to families, genera, and species. The plant family descriptions contain information on wildlife and human uses, important weeds, poisonous plants, and medicinal herbs, and the species accounts provide scientific and common names, flowering periods, habitat, physiographic distribution, state and federal designations, and wetland ranking. A total of 179 families, 856 genera, and 2,600 species and infraspecific taxa are included, and nearly 2,000 line drawings illustrate the volume.
The extensive introduction includes information on a variety of topics, including the history of the flora, vegetation types, and current conservation issues.
Plant Life of Kentucky is an authoritative, accessible guide to Kentucky's flora, and an indispensable resource for students, teachers, researchers, wildlife biologists, farmers, county agents, amateur naturalists, land planners, environmental consultants, foresters, and conservationists.

01 - USA - Anne-Marie Borbely, Jan F. Kreider - Distributed Gener...ration, The Power Paradigm for the New Millennium 2001.jpg

As a result of deregulation, the US electric utility industry is undergoing a dramatic transformation with far-reaching technical and social consequences. At the heart of this transformation lies Distributed Generation (DG)-the substitution of centralized electricity production with smaller-scale technologies located in or near facilities and powered by natural gas or renewable resources. The Electric Power Research Institute estimates that 20 percent of all new power generation will use distributed, not centralized technologies.Distributed Generation: The Power Paradigm for the New Millennium is the first step to understanding the myriad issues that surround the newest, most significant trend in power production since the steam turbine. Chapters contributed by the top experts in their fields address virtually every aspect of this energy "revolution," from its associated technologies to the regulatory environment and from choosing the right DG system for a given purpose to the novel financial and economic opportunities this paradigm shift presents. This book gives engineers and energy business developers their first opportunity to explore and gain a broad understanding of the new energy landscape. With its detailed discussion of the near-term technologies that will see application in the next few years, Distributed Generation: The Power Paradigm for the New Millennium will undoubtedly become the industry's standard reference.

01 - USA - Will Leitch - God Save the Fan, How Preening Sportscast...cted Quarterback Have Taken the Fun Out of Sports 2008.jpg

Arch and unrepentant, Leitch is the mouthpiece for all the frustrated fans who just want their games back from big money, bloated egos, and blathering sportscasters. Always a fan first and a journalist second, Leitch considers the perfection of fantasy leagues, the meaninglessness of the steroids debate, and the aching permanence of loyalty to just one team. He'll tell you why, long before that dogfighting mess, Michael Vick's undercover STD clinic name was Ron Mexico; why athletes persist in publicly praising God; and what the beer companies really think about you. Share Leitch's dread as he spends twenty—four hours watching ESPN. Sit and have a beer with John Rocker and his surprising girlfriend. Be inspired by Rick Ankiel's phoenixlike rise, and fall.

John V. Denson - A Century of War (2006).jpg

John Denson, in a book that covers the history of America's large wars from 1860 through the Cold War, describes the twentieth century as the bloodiest in all history not coincidentally a century of statism. Denson recounts how the wars that destroyed American liberty came about through a series of deceitful political ploys. He provides a close examination of the rise of executive dictatorship, and demonstrates how far from the founders' vision of government we have come. It explains how world peace can only come through the practice of free trade and free markets, and why large government can only create conflict both domestic and international.

Brian McCall - The Power of the Texas Governor, Co nnally to Bush (2009).jpg

George W. Bush called it "the best job in the world," yet many would argue that the Texas governorship is a weak office. Given few enumerated powers by the Texas Constitution, the governor must build a successful relationship with the state legislature--sometimes led by a powerful lieutenant governor or speaker of the opposing party--to advance his or her policy agenda. Yet despite the limitations on the office and the power of the legislative branch, many governors have had a significant impact on major aspects of Texas's public life--government, economic development, education, and insurance reform among them. How do Texas governors gain the power to govern effectively?

The Power of the Texas Governor takes a fresh look at the state's chief executives, from John Connally to George W. Bush, to discover how various governors have overcome the institutional limitations of the office. Delving into the governors' election campaigns and successes and failures in office, Brian McCall makes a convincing case that the strength of a governor's personality--in particular, his or her highly developed social skills--can translate into real political power. He shows, for example, how governors such as Ann Richards and George W. Bush forged personal relationships with individual legislators to achieve their policy goals. Filled with revealing insights and anecdotes from key players in each administration, The Power of the Texas Governor offers new perspectives on leadership and valuable lessons on the use of power.

Elizabeth A. H. John - Storms Brewed in Other Men' s Worlds. The Confrontation of Indians, Spanish, a nd French in the Southwest, 1540-1795 (1996).jpg

01 - USA - Elizabeth A. H. John - Storms Brewed in Other Mens Worl... Spanish, and French in the Southwest, 1540-1795 1996.jpg

The interior Southwest United States--which Elizabeth John defines as including "that vast arena stretching westward from the pine-forested great bend of the Red River to the red desert mesas of the Colorado Plateau"--was a hotly contested territory for generations. First came the Spanish, who conquered it while never completely subduing the indigenous culture. Then came the French, who fought with Spain over control of what is now Louisiana and eastern Texas. Still later came the English and, finally, the Americans, who were able to capitalize on the exhaustion of the great colonial powers. John, a highly regarded historian of the region, takes a panoptic view of these complicated events and delivers a fine, gracefully written overview.

Osprey - Warrior 19 - Stuart Reid - British Redcoa t 1749-1793 (1996).jpg

During this period, the British army earned itself a formidable reputation as a fighting force. However, due to its role as a police force at home, and demonisation by American propaganda, the army was viewed as little removed from a penal institution run by aristocratic dilettantes. This view, still held by many today, is challenged by Stuart Reid, who paints a picture of an increasingly professional force. This was an important time of change and improvement for the British Army, and British Redcoat 1740-1793 fully brings this out in its comprehensive examination of the lives, conditions and experiences of the late 18th-century infantryman.

Anne Conover Heller - Ayn Rand and the World She M ade (2009).jpg

Alissa Zinovievna Rosenbaum was born to Jewish parents in 1905 Russia. Ayn Rand left Russia in 1926 for America and founded her anticollectivist philosophy, Objectivism, a philosophy of free market capitalism and the pursuit of self-interest as a moral good. Depressive, pill-taking, chain-smoking and manipulative, Rand's life was defined by a longtime Sunset Boulevard–like affair with Nathaniel Branden, who went on to start the self-esteem movement. At the same time, the combustible Rand was married to a passive man with matinee-idol looks. Magazine editor and journalist Heller competently describes Rand's feuds with William F. Buckley and with her sister, who had remained in the U.S.S.R., and the more courtly relationship Rand had with publisher Bennett Cerf. This objective account of the Objectivist Rand will interest her still large and devoted readership. Photos.

David Loomis - Combat Zoning, Military Land-Use Pl anning In Nevada (1993).jpg

The 1980s were characterized by an unprecedented peacetime military buildup. While the buildup focused on new weapons and increases in force structure, it also involved new demands for land. Nowhere has the military's demand for land been more of an issue than in the deserts of Nevada. This book began as a paper written for Dr. Earl Kersten's Geography of Nevada course at the University of Nevada, Reno, in the spring of 1987. It is the result of a study of planning for military ranges. This includes such land uses as the Navy's "Bravo" bombing ranges, Air Force missile sites, and National Guard tank training centers. Military land use planning is controversial and has always been a highly visible issue in Nevada and other western states.

Committee on America's Energy Future and National Research Council - America's Energy Future, Techno logy and Transformation (2009).jpg

01 - USA - Committee on Americas Energy Future and National Resear...icas Energy Future, Technology and Transformation 2009.jpg

Energy touches our lives in countless ways and its costs are felt when we fill up at the gas pump, pay our home heating bills, and keep businesses both large and small running. There are long-term costs as well: to the environment, as natural resources are depleted and pollution contributes to global climate change, and to national security and independence, as many of the world's current energy sources are increasingly concentrated in geopolitically unstable regions. The country's challenge is to develop an energy portfolio that addresses these concerns while still providing sufficient, affordable energy reserves for the nation.
The United States has enormous resources to put behind solutions to this energy challenge; the dilemma is to identify which solutions are the right ones. Before deciding which energy technologies to develop, and on what timeline, we need to understand them better.
America's Energy Future analyzes the potential of a wide range of technologies for generation, distribution, and conservation of energy. This book considers technologies to increase energy efficiency, coal-fired power generation, nuclear power, renewable energy, oil and natural gas, and alternative transportation fuels. It offers a detailed assessment of the associated impacts and projected costs of implementing each technology and categorizes them into three time frames for implementation.

James Howard Kunstler - The Long Emergency, Surviv ing the Converging Catastrophes of the Twenty-Firs t Century (2005).jpg

01 - USA - James Howard Kunstler - The Long Emergency, Surviving t...nverging Catastrophes of the Twenty-First Century 2005.jpg

With his classics of social commentary The Geography of Nowhere and Home from Nowhere, James Howard Kunstler has established himself as one of the great commentators on American space and place. Now, with The Long Emergency, he offers a shocking vision of a post-oil future. As a result of artificially cheap fossil-fuel energy, we have developed global models of industry, commerce, food production, and finance over the last 200 years. But the oil age, which peaked in 1970, is at an end. The depletion of nonrenewable fossil fuels is about to radically change life as we know it, and much sooner than we think. The Long Emergency tells us just what to expect after the honeymoon of affordable energy is over, preparing us for economic, political, and social changes of an unimaginable scale. Riveting and authoritative, The Long Emergency is a devastating indictment that brings new urgency and accessibility to the critical issues that will shape our future, and that we can no longer afford to ignore. It is bound to become a classic of social science.
