The celebrated orators and speeches of ancient Athens have been read and enjoyed for thousands of years. Focusing on the works of three of the greatest orators in history-Demosthenes, Lysias, and Hypereides-this collection of speeches is an indispensable source for anyone interested in classical civilization and literature, political science and rhetoric. Each of the three sections-The Thirty Tyrants, Philip and Athens, and Athens Under Alexander-includes an introduction providing an historical overview of the period and each speech is preceded by its own brief introduction. Rendered in lively, readable prose, the translations capture the energy, vigor and power of the originals.

This well-illustrated volume is just the thing to have on hand while working your way through the pages of Xenophon, Herodotus, and Thucydides. Robert Morkot traces the growth of Greece from a series of often conflicting city-states, each with its own colonial outposts as far from home as Spain and Tunisia, to loosely knit alliances that waged huge conflicts against the Persian empire--and, as in the case of the Peloponnesian War, against each other. The pages devoted to Alexander the Great, which show how the Greek empire came to extend from southern Egypt to the gates of China are particularly interesting.

This book is a study of the fourth-century sophist Libanius, a major intellectual figure who ran one of the most prestigious schools of rhetoric in the later Roman Empire. He was a tenacious adherent of pagan religion and a friend of the emperor Julian, but also taught leaders of the early Christian church like St. John Chrysostom and St. Basil the Great. Raffaella Cribiore examines Libanius's training and personality, showing him to be a vibrant educator, though somewhat gloomy and anxious by nature. She traces how he cultivated a wide network of friends and former pupils and courted powerful officials to recruit top students. Cribiore describes his school in Antioch--how students applied, how they were evaluated and trained, and how Libanius reported progress to their families. She details the professional opportunities that a thorough training in rhetoric opened up for young men of the day. Also included here are translations of 200 of Libanius's most important letters on education, almost none of which have appeared in English before.

Cribiore casts into striking relief the importance of rhetoric in late antiquity and its influence not only on pagan intellectuals but also on prominent Christian figures. She gives a balanced view of Libanius and his circle against the far-flung panorama of the Greek East.

Focusing on the first and last years of Libanius’ Antiochene career (AD 354–388), this volume illustrates his great range of his rhetorical skills, while at the same time illuminating the intrigues of city politics and university life. The shorter speeches give unparalleled insights into problems of sharply contemporary relevance – teachers’ pay, student indiscipline and rioting, threats from the rival Latin curriculum, accusations of professional incompetence, as well as everyday details of academic life.

The landmark developments of Greek culture and the critical works of Greek thought and literature were accompanied by an explosive growth in the use of written texts from the sixth through the fourth centuries B.C.E. The creation of the "classical" and the perennial use of Greece by later European civilizations as a source of knowledge and inspiration would not have taken place without the textual innovations of the classical period. This book considers how writing, reading, and disseminating texts led to new ways of thinking and new forms of expression and behavior.

Scholars have long believed agriculture to be the main economic base of Ancient Greece, and until now, this view remained uncontested. Ancient Greek Agriculture examines the art of cultivation, the tools, the technique, the plants cultivated and the animals raised. In light of the fact that Greek agriculutre in the period of the city-states was rather primitive, the authors question whether agriculture was, in fact, the main source of wealth in Ancient Greece. Ancient Greek Agriculture relies upon the close study of contemporary Greek sources--literary as well as archaeological--and in this way avoids the use of Roman sources and other materials from a later period.

In Barbarian Asia and the Greek Experience Pericles Georges explores the ways ancient Greeks viewed and interacted with non-Greeks during the classical period. Through the works of Aeschylus, Herodotus, and Xenophon, Georges examines critical episodes in the formation of Greek ideas and attitudes concerning those foreigners of Asia with whom they came into close historical contact and against whom they defined themselves--especially the "barbarians" of Persia and Lydia. He focuses on the Greeks' intramural debates about their own identity--or identities--as people who shared a common language, religious tradition, and way of life, but who differed over issues of origin, custom, culture, and notions of the barbarian "other."

Athens and Sparta deals not only with the established area of Greek political history, but also with some of the most important aspects of Greek social history, a subject which is winning increasing recognition. The author sets out the Greek source material in detail, with a full set of references. Meeting a long-felt need, he explicitly demonstrates many of the techniques of criticism and reconstruction which historians apply to this ancient evidence. Critical in spirit throughout, yet still communicating a deep respect for Greek intelligence, Powell provides a close study of the leading Greek thinkers, and an outline of the principles of psychology, both ancient and modern. His analysis successfully illustrates the practical wisdom and cunning of the chief Greek communities, Athens and Sparta.

The City of Sokrates is a comprehensive account of Athens' historical and cultural significance. In this extensively revised second edition, J. W. Roberts explores the characteristics of Athenian life in the latter half of the fifth century BC. He examines the city's extraordinary cultural legacy, including democracy, tragedy, comedy, moral philosophy and mathematical astronomy, and surveys the negative aspects of Greek culture such as blood sacrifice, subordination of women and xenophobia. This book also includes an investigation of the trial of Socrates, Athens' most devoted son and most radical critic.

It is today widely accepted that we do not get the whole truth from any historian. Greek and Roman Historians considers the work of ancient historians such as Herotudus, Tacitus and Thucydides in the the light of this attitude. In an enlightening new study, Michael Grant argues that misinformation, even deliberate disinformation, is abundant in their writings.
Grant, one of the world's greatest writers of ancient history, suggests new ways of reading and interpreting the ancient historians which maximise their usefulness as source material. He demonstrates how the evidence they provide can be augmented by the use of other, literary and non-literary, sources.
Greek and Roman Historians shows us how we can use written history to learn about the ancient world, even if our conclusions are not those its historians intended. The author argues that their work remains our most important source of information, once we have learned to question and incorporate their imperfect regard for the truth.
Grant's account is an indispensible guide to the sources and their interpretation for all students of ancient history.

The earliest and greatest works of Greek literature – the Iliad and the Odyssey – have been attributed since antiquity to the poet Homer. This concise book is an ideal introduction to the poet and his two great epics. Assuming no prior knowledge of Greek, the author supplies all the background information necessary to understand the poems.

The book presents an overview of the "Homeric question," considering the authorship, composition, and transmission of the poems. It provides the historical background to the epics, literary readings of the Iliad and the Odyssey, and an analysis of the poet’s plotting, narrative technique, and characterization. The author uses comparisons between the two poems to illustrate Homeric poetics.

A final section reviews the important secondary literature on Homer and offers a guide to further reading. Throughout, the author makes use of his own original research, especially on the relations between Greek alphabetic writing and the origins of Greek literature.
