Daniel A. Dombrowski - Contemporary Athletics and Ancient Greek Ideals (2009).jpg

Greece Grecja - Daniel A. Dombrowski - Contemporary Athletics and Ancient Greek Ideals 2009.jpg
Despite their influence in our culture, sports inspire dramatically less philosophical consideration than such ostensibly weightier topics as religion, politics, or science. Arguing that athletic playfulness coexists with serious underpinnings, and that both demand more substantive attention, Daniel Dombrowski harnesses the insights of ancient Greek thinkers to illuminate contemporary athletics.

Dombrowski contends that the ideas of Plato, Aristotle, and Plotinus shed important light on issues—such as the pursuit of excellence, the concept of play, and the power of accepting physical limitations while also improving one’s body—that remain just as relevant in our sports-obsessed age as they were in ancient Greece. Bringing these concepts to bear on contemporary concerns, Dombrowski considers such questions as whether athletic competition can be a moral substitute for war, whether it necessarily constitutes war by other means, and whether it encourages fascist tendencies or ethical virtue. The first volume to philosophically explore twenty-first-century sport in the context of its ancient predecessor, Contemporary Athletics and Ancient Greek Ideals reveals that their relationship has great and previously untapped potential to inform our understanding of human nature.

Keith Branigan - Urbanism in the Aegean Bronze Age (2002).jpg

Greece Grecja - Keith Branigan - Urbanism in the Aegean Bronze Age 2002.jpg
State-formation and the emergence of civilization have been two of the major arenas of debate in Aegean prehistory for the last twenty five years. The process of urbanization has therefore been at the forefront of scholarly debate. Bronze Age towns, however, have largely been ignored, particularly at a generalized level. Research has usually focused on their architecture, and particularly their elite or public architecture, rather than their general nature and character, and many studies have been restricted to a single town or even a single building. This volume redresses the balance and draws attention and thought not only to urban settlements as a whole but to their social and economic roles, their demographic significance and ultimately to their character and personality.

Greece Grecja - J.N. Coldstream - Greek Geometric Pottery, A Survey ...es and Their Chronology. Revised Second Edition 2008.jpg
Our knowledge of the dawn of the Hellenic civilization—ca. 900 to 700 BC—is heavily reliant on found artifacts and artisinal matter. Geometric pottery, a leading art of its day, is of special importance for the historians of early Greece—in a large part because it’s plentiful enough to establish a chronology for a period without any contemporary written documents. This volume focuses on a comprehensive study of ten local styles and their relations with one another—culminating in an attempt to fix their absolute chronology in light of the evidence. Finally, a historical sketch shows how the results of the pottery analysis can be combined with other archaeological evidence and later written sources in order to throw more light on the political, social, and economic development of the early Greek city-states.

Nicholas F. Jones - Politics and Society in Ancien t Greece (2008).jpg

Greece Grecja - Nicholas F. Jones - Politics and Society in Ancient Greece 2008.jpg
Western democracies often trace their political roots back to Ancient Greece. While politics today may seem the dusty domain of lawmakers and pundits, in the classical era virtually no aspect of life was beyond its reach. "Political life" was not limited to acts of a legislature, magistrates, and the courts but routinely included the activities of social clubs, the patronage system, and expression through literature, art, and architecture. Through these varied means, even non-enfranchised groups (such as women and non-citizens) gained entry into a wider democratic process. Beyond the citizen world of "traditional" politics, there existed multiple layers of Greek political life-reflecting many aspects of our own modern political landscape. Religious cults served as venues for female office-holders; private clubs and drinking parties served significant social functions. Popular athletes capitalized on their fame to run for elected office. Military veterans struggled to bring back the "good old days" much to the dismay of the forward-thinking ambitions of naive twenty-somethings. Liberals and conservatives of all classes battled over important issues of the day. Scandal and intrigue made or ended many a political career. Taken collectively, these aspects of political life serve as a lens for viewing the whole of Greek civilization in some of its characteristic and distinctive dimensions.

Edith Hall - Greek Tragedy, Suffering under the Su n (2010).jpg

Greece Grecja - Edith Hall - Greek Tragedy, Suffering under the Sun 2010.jpg
This is an invaluable introduction to ancient Greek tragedy which discusses every surviving play in detail and provides all the background information necessary for understanding the context and content of the plays. Edith Hall argues that the essential feature of the genre is that it always depicts terrible human suffering and death, but in a way that invites philosophical enquiry into their causes and effects, This enquiry was played out in the bright sunlight of open-air theatre, which became a key marker of the boundary between living and dead. The first half of the book is divided into four chapters which address the social and physical contexts in which the plays were performed, the contribution of the poets, actors, funders, and audiences, the poetic composition of the texts, their performance conventions, main themes, and focus on religion, politics, and the family. The second half consists of individual essays on each of the surviving thirty-three plays by the Greek tragedians, and an account of the recent performance of Greek tragic theatre and tragic fragments. An up-to-date 'Suggestions for further reading' is included.

Barbara A. Barletta - The Origins of the Greek Arc hitectural Orders (2009).jpg

Greece Grecja - Barbara A. Barletta - The Origins of the Greek Architectural Orders 2009.jpg
Much of our understanding of the origins and early development of the Greek architectural order is based on the writings of ancient authors, such as Virtruvius, and those of modern interpreters. Traditionally, the archaeological evidence has been viewed secondarily and often made to fit within a literary context, despite contradictions that occur. Barbara Barletta's study examines both forms of evidence in an effort to reconcile the two sources, as well as to offer a coherent reconstruction of the origins and early development of the Greek architectural orders. Beginning with the pre-canonical material, she demonstrates that the relatively late emergence of the Doric and Ionic orders arose from contributions of separate regions of the Greek world, rather than a single center. Barletta's reinterpretations of the evidence also assigns greater importance to the often overlooked contributions of Western Greece and the Cycladic Islands.

H. A. Shapiro - The Cambridge Companion to Archaic Greece (2007).jpg

Greece Grecja - H. A. Shapiro - The Cambridge Companion to Archaic Greece 2007.jpg
The Cambridge Companion to Archaic Greece provides a wide-ranging synthesis of history, society, and culture during the formative period of Ancient Greece, from the Age of Homer in the late eighth century to the Persian Wars of 490-480 BC. In ten clearly written and succinct chapters, leading scholars from around the English-speaking world treat all aspects of the civilization of Archaic Greece, from social, political, and military history to early achievements in poetry, philosophy, and the visual arts. Archaic Greece was an age of experimentation and intellectual ferment that laid the foundations for much of Western thought and culture. Individual Greek city-states rose to great power and wealth, and after a long period of isolation, many cities sent out colonies that spread Hellenism to all corners of the Mediterranean world. This Companion offers a vivid and fully documented account of this critical stage in the history of the West.

Peter Green - Diodorus Siculus, The Persian Wars t o the Fall of Athens. Books 11-14.34 (480-401 BCE) (2010).jpg

Greece Grecja - Peter Green - Diodorus Siculus, The Persian Wars to ... the Fall of Athens. Books 11-14.34 480-401 BCE 2010.jpg
Only one surviving source provides a continuous narrative of Greek history from Xerxes' invasion to the Wars of the Successors following the death of Alexander the Great--the Bibliotheke, or "Library," produced by Sicilian historian Diodorus Siculus (ca. 90-30 BCE). Yet generations of scholars have disdained Diodorus as a spectacularly unintelligent copyist who only reproduced, and often mangled, the works of earlier historians. Arguing for a thorough critical reappraisal of Diodorus as a minor but far from idiotic historian himself, Peter Green published Diodorus Siculus, Books 11-12.37.1, a fresh translation, with extensive commentary, of the portion of Diodorus's history dealing with the period 480-431 BCE, the so-called "Golden Age" of Athens. This is the only recent modern English translation of the Bibliotheke in existence. In the present volume--the first of two covering Diodorus's text up to the death of Alexander--Green expands his translation of Diodorus up to Athens' defeat after the Peloponnesian War. In contrast to the full scholarly apparatus in his earlier volume (the translation of which is incorporated) the present volume's purpose is to give students, teachers, and general readers an accessible version of Diodorus's history. Its introduction and notes are especially designed for this audience and provide an up-to-date overview of fifth-century Greece during the years that saw the unparalleled flowering of drama, architecture, philosophy, historiography, and the visual arts for which Greece still remains famous.

Adrienne Mayor - The First Fossil Hunters, Paleont ology in Greek and Roman Times (2000).jpg

Greece Grecja - Adrienne Mayor - The First Fossil Hunters, Paleontology in Greek and Roman Times 2000.jpg
Griffins, Centaurs, Cyclopes, and Giants--these fabulous creatures of classical mythology continue to live in the modern imagination through the vivid accounts that have come down to us from the ancient Greeks and Romans. But what if these beings were more than merely fictions? What if monstrous creatures once roamed the earth in the very places where their legends first arose? This is the arresting and original thesis that Adrienne Mayor explores in The First Fossil Hunters. Through careful research and meticulous documentation, she convincingly shows that many of the giants and monsters of myth did have a basis in fact--in the enormous bones of long-extinct species that were once abundant in the lands of the Greeks and Romans.

As Mayor shows, the Greeks and Romans were well aware that a different breed of creatures once inhabited their lands. They frequently encountered the fossilized bones of these primeval beings, and they developed sophisticated concepts to explain the fossil evidence, concepts that were expressed in mythological stories. The legend of the gold-guarding griffin, for example, sprang from tales first told by Scythian gold-miners, who, passing through the Gobi Desert at the foot of the Altai Mountains, encountered the skeletons of Protoceratops and other dinosaurs that littered the ground.

Like their modern counterparts, the ancient fossil hunters collected and measured impressive petrified remains and displayed them in temples and museums; they attempted to reconstruct the appearance of these prehistoric creatures and to explain their extinction. Long thought to be fantasy, the remarkably detailed and perceptive Greek and Roman accounts of giant bone finds were actually based on solid paleontological facts. By reading these neglected narratives for the first time in the light of modern scientific discoveries, Adrienne Mayor illuminates a lost world of ancient paleontology. As Peter Dodson writes in his Foreword, "Paleontologists, classicists, and historians as well as natural history buffs will read this book with the greatest of delight--surprises abound."

Greece Grecja - Eric Nelson - The Greek Tradition in Republican Thought 2006.jpg
Tracing the influence of ancient Greek sources on the development of republican theory in Europe and America, this book argues that an important tradition of republican thought, derived from the central texts of Greek moral and political philosophy, emerged in sixteenth century England. It contributed significantly to the ideological framework of the English Civil Wars and the American Revolution. Eric Nelson offers significant reinterpretations of several central texts of European political theory, as well as a radical reappraisal of ancient Roman historiography.

Kathleen N. Daly - Greek and Roman Mythology A to Z (2009).jpg

Greece Grecja - Kathleen N. Daly - Greek and Roman Mythology A to Z 2009.jpg
According to many scholars, ancient Greece and Rome provided the foundations of Western culture. More than two millennia later, myths of both civilizations are still being studied for their rich storytelling and insight into the cultures that spawned them. Their continued retelling speaks to their universal appeal. This revised edition of "Greek and Roman Mythology A to Z" illuminates the mythology at the core of those civilizations' beliefs. Entries of this title include: the most famous Greek and Roman gods and goddesses; the most memorable heroes and heroines; important topics in mythology and culture, such as household gods and Olympic Games; places such as Athens, Parnassus, and Rome; and, more.

Summary: Great book for quick reference on any god
Rating: 5

This is a great book if you just need to look up some quick information on a Greek or Roman god. It does go into detail on some of the more important characters like Hercules, but most just have a few paragraphs. My main complaint is that even though it says "Greek AND ROMAN Mythology" about 75% of the characters covered are Greek in origin. It is nice that each character is labeled as either Greek or Roman though. This made writing my Roman Mythology paper much easier. A good book for anyone interested in Mythology :)

Thucydides: An Introduction for the Common Reader is a useful book.... Thucydides' ... depth and breadth remain an extraordinary reminder of how little political distance we have traveled since his time.

Greece Grecja - Edith Hall - The Theatrical Cast of Athens, Interact...actions between Ancient Greek Drama and Society 2006.jpg
In this pioneering study Edith Hall explores the numerous different ways in which we can understand the relationship between the real, social world in which the Athenians lived and the theatrical roles that they invented. In twelve studies of role types and the theatrical conventions that contributed to their creation - including women in childbirth, drowning barbarians, horny satyrs, allegorical representations of Comedy, peasant farmers, tragic masks, and solo sung arias - she advances the argument that the interface between ancient Greek drama and social reality must be understood as a complicated and incessant process of mutual cross-pollination.

Greece Grecja - Michael Shanks - Art and the Early Greek State 1999.jpg
Michael Shanks has written a challenging contribution to recent debates on the emergence of the Greek city states in the first millennium BC. He interprets the art and archaeological remains of Korinth to elicit connections among new urban environments, foreign trade, warfare, and the ideology of male sovereignty. His interdisciplinary perspective draws on an anthropologically informed archaeology, ancient history, art history, material culture studies and structural approaches to the classics, and raises large questions about the links between design and manufacture, political and social structure, and culture and ideology.
