Gábor Betegh - The Derveni Papyrus; Cosmology, The ology and Interpretation (2007).jpg

All History - Gbor Betegh - The Derveni Papyrus Cosmology, Theology and Interpretation 2007.jpg
Gábor Betegh presents the first systematic reconstruction and examination of the Derveni papyrus and analyzes its role in the intellectual milieu of its age. Found in 1962 near Thessaloniki among the remains of a funeral pyre, it is one of the earliest surviving Greek papyri and is a document of primary importance for understanding religious and philosophical developments of the time of Socrates. The book will appeal strongly to classicists, philosophers and historians of religion.

All History - Frances Andrews, Christoph Egger - Pope, Church And City Essays In Honour Of Brenda M. Bolton 2004.jpg
This illustrated volume is an articulate series of essays by distinguished authors on themes which are central to the work of Brenda Bolton as a scholar and teacher: Innocent III, the city of Rome, the late medieval Church and the urban context of the Italian peninsula in the twelfth to fourteenth centuries. The essays combine groundbreaking new analyses with careful reading of the sources to demonstrate the vibrancy of the study of the ecclesiastical and social history of the Mediterranean in the late Middle Ages.

Jasminka Udovicki - Burn This House; The Making an d Unmaking of Yugoslavia (2010).jpg

All History - Jasminka Udovicki - Burn This House The Making and Unmaking of Yugoslavia 2010.jpg
This anthology is based on the premise that authors from the former Yugoslavia have yet much to teach us about their country's tragedy. The result is a collection of rich insights drawn from the history of Ottoman rule through the burdens of implementing the Dayton Accords. Specialists will particularly applaud articles revealing the critical importance of the current opposition press in Croatia and Serbia. Susan Woodward (Brookings), the single non-Yugoslav contributor, adds an excellent chapter on foreign involvement in the early phases of the conflict. Other contributors sharpen our image of the overall situation by demolishing the "ancient hatreds" thesis of violent conflict and identifying President Tudjman's "ultranationalism" as the "single most important ideological resource" for Serbia's Milosevic. Editor Udovicki's concluding plea for the West to enunciate clearly a "firm universal principle" of minority rights is compelling. Highly recommended for all academic and larger public libraries.?Zachary T. Irwin, Pennsylvania State Univ.-Erie

All History - Osprey PL - WBH 33 - Randal Gray - Kaiserschlacht 1918 Wiosenna ofensywa Ludendorffa 2010.jpg

All History - Grard Delacroix, Hubert Berti - La Diligente.

This monograph is devoted to the tartane, a fishing ship and coastal trading vessel found in the Mediterranean for over three centuries but little known today. Artist's renderings of tartanes abound, but technical information on their construction is rare, especially for the period before 1800. We found copious information in the Naval Archives in the port of Toulon and in the National Archives on La Diligente, a tartane built in Toulon for the Royal Navy by Laurent Marchand, a shipwright from Agde. Happily enough, the ship's plans were also preserved in the Toulon archives. Gerard Delacroix conceived and designed this monograph on the basis of Hubert Berti's archival research. Both men relied on Jean Boudriot's principles, advice and guidance. The monograph includes a full set of plans for building the model at 1:36, 1:48, and 1:72 scale. In other words, it allows for three varying degrees of difficulty in construction. Rigging and fitting out are elegant but simple and the decoration of the hull is fairly easy to do. A careful beginner at model building would be able to take on this ship as his or her first project. A more experienced model builder would be able to assemble a first-rate piece with a closed hull based on the completeness of the documentation. The framework is particularly difficult to execute because of the lightness of the ribs. The most skillful model builders will therefore be able to display their talent. The Diligente had a fascinating career due to the variety of her missions: large and small coastal trading, races, transportation of personnel or official dispatches, and the protection of convoys. The imagination can run full course if one should choose to present this charming small ship in one of those historical situations.

Lora Wildenthal - German Women for Empire, 1884–19 45 (2002).jpg

All History - Lora Wildenthal - German Women for Empire, 18841945 2002.jpg
When Germany annexed colonies in Africa and the Pacific beginning in the 1880s, many German women were enthusiastic. At the same time, however, they found themselves excluded from what they saw as a great nationalistic endeavor. In German Women for Empire, 1884–1945 Lora Wildenthal untangles the varied strands of racism, feminism, and nationalism that thread through German women’s efforts to participate in this episode of overseas colonization.
In confrontation and sometimes cooperation with men over their place in the colonial project, German women launched nationalist and colonialist campaigns for increased settlement and new state policies. Wildenthal analyzes recently accessible Colonial Office archives as well as mission society records, periodicals, women’s memoirs, and fiction to show how these women created niches for themselves in the colonies. They emphasized their unique importance for white racial “purity” and the inculcation of German culture in the family. While pressing for career opportunities for themselves, these women also campaigned against interracial marriage and circulated an image of African and Pacific women as sexually promiscuous and inferior. As Wildenthal discusses, the German colonial imaginary persisted even after the German colonial empire was no longer a reality. The women’s colonial movement continued into the Nazi era, combining with other movements to help turn the racialist thought of the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries into the hierarchical evaluation of German citizens as well as colonial subjects.
Students and scholars of women’s history, modern German history, colonial politics and culture, postcolonial theory, race/ethnicity, and gender will welcome this groundbreaking study.

All History - Gordon Kipling - Enter the King Theatre, Liturgy, and Ritual in the Medieval Civic Triumph 1998.jpg
This study describes for the first time the ritual purposes, symbolic vocabulary, and quasi-dramatic form of one late medieval courtly festival, the royal entry. Although the royal entry as a formal ceremony can be traced back as an unbroken tradition from late Classical times through to the Renaissance, Kipling begins where the royal entry adopts pageantry as its essential medium in the late fourteenth century.

Edward Edwards - Libraries and Founders of Librari es (2010).jpg

All History - Edward Edwards - Libraries and Founders of Libraries 2010.jpg
This comprehensive volume, first published in 1864, covers the history of libraries from classical times to the nineteenth century, principally in England but also further afield. The author was an influential figure in the founding of municipal libraries in nineteenth-century Britain and regarded access to good libraries as crucial to education and civilisation. He emphasises the importance of individual collectors in the building of great libraries, and examines the personal holdings of many writers and scholars as well as members of royal families, the aristocracy, and clergy. Some of these are well known, others less commonly encountered in surveys of library history. Edwards also discusses the subsequent history of these collections, their dispersal or incorporation into other libraries. Other important topics covered by Edwards include the development and organisation of the State Paper Office and Public Records Office from the medieval period onwards.

Joseph P. Smaldone - Warfare in the Sokoto Calipha te; Historical and Sociological Perspectives (1977 ).jpg

All History - Joseph P. Smaldone - Warfare in the Sokoto Caliphate Historical and Sociological Perspectives 1977.jpg
The successful jihad of 1804 in Hausaland - perhaps the most important Islamic revolution in West African history, with consequences still apparent in Nigeria today - resulted in the establishment of the Sokoto Caliphate, the largest and most enduring West African polity in the nineteenth century. The book is a full length study of traditional Sudanic military history, and an authoritative analysis of warfare in its most prominent Islamic state. After a brief survey of the evolution of Sudanic warfare and military organisation before 1800, Dr Smaldone examines the historical development and sociological implications of the two important revolutions in military technology which occurred in the nineteenth century: the adoption of cavalry during the jihad period and the introduction of firearms in the latter half of the century. He argues that these two revolutions were causal factors in producing two structural transformations in the emirates of the Caliphate, first from relatively egalitarian combatant communities to feudal systems, and then to centralised bureaucratic state organisations.

G. Ugo Nwokeji - The Slave Trade and Culture in th e Bight of Biafra; An African Society in the Atlan tic World (2010).jpg

All History - G. Ugo Nwokeji - The Slave Trade and Culture in the B... Biafra An African Society in the Atlantic World 2010.jpg
The Slave Trade and Culture in the Bight of Biafra dissects and explains the structure, dramatic expansion, and manifold effects of the slave trade in the Bight of Biafra. By showing that the rise of the Aro merchant group was the key factor in trade expansion, G. Ugo Nwokeji reinterprets why and how such large-scale commerce developed in the absence of large-scale centralized states. The result is the first study to link the structure and trajectory of the slave trade in a major exporting region to the expansion of a specific African merchant group - among other fresh insights into Atlantic Africa's involvement in the trade - and the most comprehensive treatment of Atlantic slave trade in the Bight of Biafra. The fundamental role of culture in the organization of trade is highlighted, transcending the usual economic explanations in a way that complicates traditional generalizations about work, domestic slavery, and gender in pre-colonial Africa.

All History - Mary C. Beaudry, James Symonds - Interpreting the Early Modern World, Transatlantic Perspectives 2010.jpg
This volume is based on a session at a 2005 Society for Historical Archaeology meeting. The organizers assembled historical archaeologists from the UK and the US, whose work arises out of differing intellectual traditions. The authors exchange ideas about what their colleagues have written, and construct dialogues about theories and practices that inform interpretive archaeology on either side of the Atlantic, ending with commentary by two well-known names in interpretive archaeology.

All History - Simo Knuuttila, Pekka Krkkinen - Theories of Perception in Medieval and Early Modern Philosophy 2008.jpg
Sense perception is one of the classical themes in philosophy. It is traditionally considered a necessary preamble to many important topics, such as the mind-body relationship, consciousness, knowledge, and skepticism. Perception is also a phenomenon which itself raises philosophical questions, such as what is perceptible, what the content of perception is, whether this content is conceptual and how perception is related to epistemic attitudes. While the philosophy of mind and philosophical psychology are the main areas in which perception is dealt with in contemporary philosophy, it is also discussed in the theory of knowledge, cognitive science, philosophical aesthetics and metaphysics. In recent years, the rich tradition of various philosophical theories of perception has been increasingly studied by scholars of the history of philosophy of mind.

All History - Jeffry M. Diefendorf - In the Wake of War The Reconstruction of German Cities after World War II 1993.jpg
In 1945 Germany's cities lay in ruins, destroyed by Allied bombers `hat left major architectural monuments badly damaged and much of the housing stock reduced to rubble. At the war's end, observers thought that it would take forty years to rebuild, but by the late 1950s West Germany's cities had risen anew. The housing crisis had been overcome and virtually all important monuments reconstructed, and the cities had reclaimed their characteristic identities. Everywhere there was a mixture of old and new: historic churches and town halls stood alongside new housing and department stores; ancient street layouts were crossed or encircled by wide arteries; old city centers were balanced by garden suburbs laid out according to modern planning principles.

All History - Michael M. Woolfson - The Origin and Evolution of the Solar System 2000.jpg
The origin of the solar system has been a matter of speculation for many centuries, and since the time of Newton it has been possible to apply scientific principles to the problem. A succession of theories, starting with that of Pierre Laplace in 1796, has gained general acceptance, only to fall from favor due to its contradiction in some basic scientific principle or new heavenly observation. Modern observations by spacecraft of the solar system, the stars, and extra-solar planetary systems continuously provide new information that may be helpful in finding a plausible theory as well as present new constraints for any such theory to satisfy.

All History - Norman John Greville Pounds - An Historical Geography of Europe, 1500-1840 1980.jpg
This book, like its companion volume, An Historical Geography of Europe 450 BC-AD 1330, seeks to examine the complex of natural and man-made features that have influenced the course of history and have been influenced by it. It follows the general pattern of the earlier volume and spans the period from the early sixteenth century to the eve of the Industrial Revolution in continental Europe, approximately 1500 to 1840. It first presents a picture of the geography of Europe - political, social and economic - in the early sixteenth century, and it ends with a similar picture of continental Europe in the early nineteenth. The intervening period of about three centuries is too short to be presented in a series of cross-sections. Instead, between these two horizontal pictures a series of vertical studies has been inserted. These trace the development of the main facets of European geography during this period. There are chapters on population, urban development, agriculture, manufacturing and trade and transport. As in the earlier volume, no attempt has been made to include either the British Isles or Russia, and these are referred to only incidentally.

Lisa Hopkins - Drama and the Succession to the Cro wn, 1561-1633 (2011).jpg

All History - Lisa Hopkins - Drama and the Succession to the Crown, 1561-1633 2011.jpg
The succession to the throne, Lisa Hopkins argues here, was a burning topic not only in the final years of Elizabeth but well into the 1630s, with continuing questions about how James' two kingdoms might be ruled after his death. Because the issue, with its attendant constitutional questions, was so politically sensitive, Hopkins contends that drama, with its riddled identities, oblique relationship to reality, and inherent blurring of the extent to which the situation it dramatizes is indicative or particular, offered a crucial forum for the discussion. Hopkins analyzes some of the ways in which the dramatic works of the time - by Marlowe, Shakespeare, Webster and Ford among others - reflect, negotiate and dream the issue of the succession to the throne.
