A biography of African American lawyer Benjamin Hooks, who continues to speak and teach about racial justice and equality since his 1992 retirement from the position of executive director of the NAACP.
Up-Biographies of the first African-American female member of the U.S. Senate, the Chair of the Afro-American Studies department at Harvard, and former director of the NAACP, respectively. While these three books all have their strengths, two of them are severely flawed. Moseley-Braun is bolstered by a lively and compelling writing style, one that moves the woman's political career quickly along. D'Orio tells her story well, reflecting his journalistic background. Kjelle and Wagner do a good job of relating the accomplishments of their subjects in a clear, well-organized way. All three authors have managed to escape the series biography curse-dull and boring writing. However, too little space has been devoted to the subjects' personal lives to provide a greater context for what they ultimately have achieved. Also, Moseley-Braun and Hooks are marred by editorial errors. Both have parts of sentences missing, and in Moseley-Braun, Edward Brooke, a 20th-century black legislator, is confused with Blanche K. Bruce, a Reconstruction-era black legislator. On another page, there is inconsistency regarding Moseley-Braun's campaign fund-raising. Was the amount raised $400,000 or $40,000? Finally, in Hooks, what should be a reference to the noted black writer and activist James Weldon Johnson becomes a reference to James Weldon Johns. These kinds of lapses are unforgivable.-Carol Jones Collins, Columbia High School, Maplewood, NJ

Part of Facts On File's American Biographies series, American Political Leaders concentrates on 250 of the most influential leaders who directed the nation's political life from colonial times to present. Each entry considers the subject's life, presenting both personal details and historical context and discussing the person's importance to U.S. history. Each entry also includes further reading suggestions and, in some cases, Web sites.

The scope encompasses presidents, major party candidates, third-party presidential candidates, Supreme Court justices, Speakers of the U.S. House of Representatives, Congress, cabinet officers, diplomats, and three First Ladies. Among examples are Shirley Chisholm, Henry Clay, John Foster Dulles, Horace Greeley, Newt Gingrich, John McCain, and Earl Warren. Inclusion was based on frequency of mention in secondary and college textbooks in U.S. history and political science. For those recent leaders not yet elevated to the status of the college textbook, the author used newspaper and other media sources, relying on Internet resources only when they were considered authoritative. Colonial and Revolutionary War personages are included as well as leaders of the Confederate States of America.

Of great importance for a reference book such as this one are the indexes. In addition to a general name and subject index, entries are indexed by "Offices Held or Sought" and year of birth. "Offices Held or Sought" has categories such as "Unsuccessful Candidate for President or Vice President," "Subcabinet Official," and "Diplomat." This readable volume is recommended for high-school, public, and undergraduate libraries, especially those that have found other titles in the

Although historical scholarship has long focused on the military and political aspects of the American Civil War, the impact of its incredible carnage, economic dislocation, and social transformation on the lives of individuals has escaped much academic scrutiny until recently. Clinton (Southern and women's history, Baruch Coll., CUNY: Civil War Stories, LJ 9/15/98) has compiled a collection of essays that analyzes the experience of Southern families during and after his pivotal conflict.

In this book, Chase Hensel examines how Yup'ik Eskimos and non-natives construct and maintain gender and ethnic identities through strategic talk about hunting, fishing, and processing. Although ethnicity is overtly constructed in terms of either/or categories, the discourse of Bethel residents suggests that their actual concern is less with whether one is native or non-native, than with how native one is in a given context. In the interweaving of subsistence practices and subsistence discourse, ethnicity is constantly recreated.

During the first decades of America's existence as a nation, private citizens, voluntary associations, and government officials encouraged the smuggling of European inventions and artisans to the New World. At the same time, the young republic was developing policies that set new standards for protecting industrial innovations. This book traces the evolution of America's contradictory approach to intellectual property rights from the colonial period to the age of Jackson. During the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries Britain shared technological innovations selectively with its American colonies. It became less willing to do so once America's fledgling industries grew more competitive. After the Revolution, the leaders of the republic supported the piracy of European technology in order to promote the economic strength and political independence of the new nation. By the middle of the nineteenth century, the United States became a leader among industrializing nations and a major exporter of technology. It erased from national memory its years of piracy and became the world's foremost advocate of international laws regulating intellectual property.

During the Paris Peace Conference of 1919, while key decisions were debated by the victorious Allied powers, a multitude of smaller nations and colonies held their breath, waiting to see how their fates would be decided. President Woodrow Wilson, in his Fourteen Points, had called for "a free, open-minded, and absolutely impartial adjustment of all colonial claims," giving equal weight to the opinions of the colonized peoples and the colonial powers. Among those nations now paying close attention to Wilson's words and actions were the budding nationalist leaders of four disparate non-Western societies--Egypt, India, China, and Korea. That spring, Wilson's words would help ignite political upheavals in all four of these countries. This book is the first to place the 1919 Revolution in Egypt, the Rowlatt Satyagraha in India, the May Fourth movement in China, and the March First uprising in Korea in the context of a broader "Wilsonian moment" that challenged the existing international order. Using primary source material from America, Europe, and Asia, historian Erez Manela tells the story of how emerging nationalist movements appropriated Wilsonian language and adapted it to their own local culture and politics as they launched into action on the international stage. The rapid disintegration of the Wilsonian promise left a legacy of disillusionment and facilitated the spread of revisionist ideologies and movements in these societies; future leaders of Third World liberation movements--Mao Zedong, Ho Chi Minh, and Jawaharlal Nehru, among others--were profoundly shaped by their experiences at the time. The importance of the Paris Peace Conference and Wilson's influence on international affairs far from the battlefields of Europe cannot be underestimated. Now, for the first time, we can clearly see just how the events played out at Versailles sparked a wave of nationalism that is still resonating globally today.

“This book opens the window to the leadership role of African Americans in the digital arena. Barber offers a way to examine the relationship between African Americans and the Information Revolution. He also reminds his readers that considering the internet a "white" technology ignores the contributions and complexities in African Americans' relationship to the new digital media.”–The Journal of African American History

“Barber provides profiles of 26 African Americans who are leaders in the information industry, including computer scientists, policymakers, educators, entrepreneurs, mathematicians, analysts, developers, activists, and businesspeople. He describes the contributions and lives of innovators such as Roy L. Clay, Sr., Clarence (Skip) Ellis, Ronald H. Brown, Congressman Bobby L. Rush, Reverend Jesse Jackson, Dhyana Ziegler, Robert L. Johnson, and Kenn Turner.”–Reference & Research Book News

“Barber provides over two dozen biographical essays on prominent Black politicians, computer scientists, educators, and entrpreneurs who have in one way or another contributed to the development of computer technology and its applications in American society....The topic of information technology and the African American community is important, especially as the digital divide becomes a more and more significant challenge for economically stressed areas of our cities and countryside. Barber's The Black Digital Elite will serve as a valuable summary of the part African Americans have played so far in the information revolution.”–Collection Management

“Shows that African Americans are far from just being passive consumers and access-starved bystanders to the construction of the Information Superhighway and now, the data-sphere....This book is one-of-a-kind in important ways. After reading this book, give it to the nearest gamers and/or constantly IMing teens right away. It'll immediately broaden their horizons with ideas--perhaps on what to do with those gadgets.”–Black Issues Book Review

“Barber profiles twenty-six African Americans who have made significant contributions to the advancement of technology over the past four decades. From inventors to CEOs, educators to policy-makers, the compilation of perhaps unfamiliar names and faces adds richness to the history of technological innovation. Beyond the biography, each profile includes an insightful discussion about the digital divide, its persistence and how African Americans can create new paradigms for themselves in order to bridge the gap.”

Although frequently overlooked between the American Revolution and the Civil War, the War of 1812 tested a rising generation of American leaders; unified the United States with a renewed sense of national purpose; and set the stage for westward expansion from Mackinac Island to the Gulf of Mexico. USS Constitution, "Old Ironsides," proved the mettle of the fledgling American navy; Oliver Hazard Perry hoisted a flag boasting, "Don't Give Up the Ship"; and Andrew Jackson's ragged force stood behind it's cotton bales at New Orleans and bested the pride of British regulars. Here are the stories of commanding generals such as America's double-dealing James Wilkinson, Great Britain's gallant Sir Isaac Brock, Canada's heroine farm wife Laura Secord, and country doctor William Beanes, whose capture set the stage for Francis Scott Key to write "The Star-Spangled Banner." During the War of 1812, the United States cast off its cloak of colonial adolescence and -- with both humiliating and glorious moments -- found the fire that was to forge a nation.

The Cold War was in many ways a religious war. Presidents Truman and Eisenhower and other American leaders believed that human rights and freedoms were endowed by God, that God had called the United States to defend liberty in the world, and that Soviet communism was especially evil because of its atheism and its enmity to religion. Along with security and economic concerns, these religious convictions also helped determine both how the United States defined the enemy and how it fought the conflict. Meanwhile, American Protestant churches failed to seize the moment. Internal differences over theology and politics, and resistance to cooperation with Catholics and Jews, hindered Protestant leaders domestically and internationally. Frustrated by these internecine disputes, Truman and Eisenhower attempted instead to construct a new civil religion. This public theology was used to mobilize domestic support for Cold War measures, to determine the strategic boundaries of containment, to appeal to people of all religious faiths around the world to unite against communism, and to undermine the authority of communist governments within their own countries.

In recent years, eating disorders among American girls and women have become a subject of national concern. Conventional explanations are generally framed in the language of psychology, feminism, sociology, or medicine. Although they differ in theory and approach, they are all linked by one common assumption--that the female preoccupation with food and weight is an essentially secular phenomenon.

Libertarian-conservative solutions to the political, social, economic and tax issues facing the United States from a 2012 Third Party Presidential contender, as well as one of America's leading Tea Party political leaders
In today's uncertain economy, people are growing more and more concerned about their financial future, and looking for common sense, limited government solutions. In The Conscience of a Libertarian: Empowering the Citizen Revolution with God, Guns, Gold & Tax Cuts, 2008 Libertarian Party Vice Presidential nominee Wayne Allyn Root presents a passionate case for smaller government; dramatically reduced spending and taxes; States' Rights; free markets; adherence to the Constitution; an end to the Fed; a ban of bailouts, stimulus, earmarks, pork and corporate welfare; economic and personal freedom; and a return of power to the people, just as the Founding Fathers intended. The book
* Explains why Obama's big government solutions are leading to a Great Depression II and a coming Citizen Revolution
* Proposes a one year "Income Tax Vacation," a permanent end to capital gains taxes, and detailed spending freezes and cuts across all levels of government
* Proposes dramatic education reform centered on school choice, home-schooling, charter schools, teacher accountability, and parental freedom
* Proposes unique reforms in the areas of health care, energy and the public sector (government employee unions)
The Conscience of a Libertarian reveals how Americans can take back their country from big government, big unions, big corporations, corrupt politicians, bureaucrats, lawyers and lobbyists.

What precisely constitutes an American bourgeoisie? Scholars have grappled with the question for a long time. Economic positions—the ownership of capital, for instance—most obviously defines this group. Control of resources cannot explain, however, the emergence of shared identities or the capacity for collective action: after all, economic interests frequently drove capital-rich Americans apart as they competed for markets or governmental favors. This book argues that one of the most important factors in this respect was the articulation of a shared culture, but this aspect has been neglected by most scholarship on the issue. This volume engages a fundamental disciplinary question about this period in American history: how did the bourgeoisie consolidate their power and fashion themselves not simply as economic leaders but as cultural innovators and arbiters? How did culture help them formulate a sense of themselves as a distinct social group with shared identities, while simultaneously setting themselves apart from other Americans?

With his arrest on Dec. 11, 2008, the world first learned that Wall Street trader and former NASDAQ chairman Bernard Madoff was allegedly running the largest Ponzi scheme in history, a $50 billion scam constructed over decades. Husband and wife writing team the Strobers (Billy Graham, The Nixon Presidency) set out to discover "what sort of person could have coldly stolen from those who had entrusted him... in many instances, with their life savings?" Born in 1938, Madoff was an unmemorable student who, in his mid-twenties, got into investing with $5000. His rags-to-riches story helped him become one of the most trusted men in the financial world, delivering fantastic returns to clients like Kevin Bacon, Stephen Spielberg, the Fairfield Fund, a wide range of Jewish philanthropies, and countless other individual investors. Put together in less than three months, this early account depends largely on media and internet stories, supplemented by 25 interviews with those who knew Madoff. Though the Strobers raise many questions that can't yet be answered (how Madoff evaded regulators, whether he had confederates, etc.), their study of a charming alleged con man is compelling, can't-make-this-stuff-up reading.
