In The American Way of Peace, Jan S. Prybyla traces the implementation of an idea derived from bedrock American values that has shaped the American character from the nation's beginning. The idea - simple, generous, optimistic, and effective - was and remains to give people realizable hope, an attainable dream, by creating a peaceful, secure, and materially comfortable world, a Pax Americana, the American Way of Peace. In the period surveyed, beginning with the end of World War II, this objective was achieved through American initiative and with American leadership, despite resistance from Nazi barbarism, Soviet serfdom, and, more recently, Islamic extremist inhumanity. There has also been opposition from some of those in the western confines of Europe whom Pax Americana helped raise from the ashes to which they had been reduced by aggressive forces. The American Way of Peace examines the work of reconstruction, the enemy bombardment, as well as the hurtful sniping along the way to this goal by the beneficiaries of American support. Prybyla recommends a reevaluation of American relations with those to whom friendship is but a utilitarian device, in light of the present eruption of terrorism worldwide. The need for America to act wisely and resolutely in defense of civilized values, to stem the third tidal wave of terrorist savagery, and to venture where others fear to tread is more compelling now than it has been in the six decades past, for today America's very survival as a force for immense good in the world is being put to the test.

The purpose of this book is to portray accurately the dress and equipment of the fighting ground troops of the United States Army, Marine Corps and, to a lesser extent. Navy during the Vietnam War. The reconstructional photographs and accompanying text chart the changing appearance of the soldiers, marines and sailors from the initial deployment, and before.to the final withdrawal a decade later. The figures in the latter part of this book, as well as presenting a vastly different appearance from those at the start, also reflect the changing attitudes towards the war.
The conflict in Vietnam is forever etched in many people's subconscious as a helicopter war; but though these remarkable aircraft would indeed come to symbolise America's presence more than any other single item of hardware, Vietnam was still, in essence, an infantryman's war. Whether Marine Corps riflemen. Air Cav troopers or Army Special Forces recondos, these infantrymen - volunteers and draftees alike - bore the brunt of the fighting. Operations were conducted in dense jungles, on steep hillsides and in flooded rice paddies; battles were fought in oppressive heat or chilling monsoon rains. The day-to-day existence of the front line infantryman was as miserable as in any other war; and, partly due to the advances being made in weapons systems, the combat load of the infantryman in Vietnam was often greater than in previous conflicts. Individual loads carried by Army and Marine infantry averaged between 50 and 60 lbs, and often far exceeded these weights. The term 'grunt', a new name for the infantryman, had its basis in these figures.

The size of Oregon and the shape of Italy, Laos is landlocked in the north-central portion of mainland Southeast Asia. It is surrounded by five more populous neighbors: China to the north. Vietnam to the east. Cambodia and Thailand to the south and Burma to the west. The northern half of the country is covered in towering hill masses and slate-black limestone karst spires. In the northeast, the mountains give way to the "Plaine Des Jarres," known commonly as the PDJ, a diamond-shaped patch of dairy land covered with giant stone burial urns dating back thousands of years.
The southern half of the country runs in a narrow panhandle, which empties onto the Bolovens Plateau. This area was covered earlier this century by French coffee plantations and vacation villas. Down the eastern edge of the panhandle arc the Annamite Corilleras. a towering mountain range that covers most of the 1.323 mile border with Vietnam. On the western edge and forming a common border with Thailand is the Mekong River.
The climate of Laos roughly divides the year in half. Beginning in late May are five months of heavy tropical rains. Five more months, beginning in December, have high temperatures and little rain. A short spring and fall connect these rainy and dry seasons.
During the Second Indochina War, Laos was home to approximately three million persons. Of these, nearly half were lowland Laotians from the Tai linguistic group that migrated from southern China beginning in the Thirteenth Century. The vast majority of these lowlanders are peasant farmers and Buddhists.

From the Mormon Church's public announcement of its sanction of polygamy in 1852 until its formal decision to abandon the practice in 1890, people on both sides of the "Mormon question" debated central questions of constitutional law. Did principles of religious freedom and local self-government protect Mormons' claim to a distinct, religiously based legal order? Or was polygamy, as its opponents claimed, a new form of slavery--this time for white women in Utah? And did constitutional principles dictate that democracy and true liberty were founded on separation of church and state?
As Sarah Barringer Gordon shows, the answers to these questions finally yielded an apparent victory for antipolygamists in the late nineteenth century, but only after decades of argument, litigation, and open conflict. Victory came at a price; as attention and national resources poured into Utah in the late 1870s and 1880s, antipolygamists turned more and more to coercion and punishment in the name of freedom. They also left a legacy in constitutional law and political theory that still governs our treatment of religious life: Americans are free to believe, but they may well not be free to act on their beliefs.
