As its title announces, this is a book about Cuba’s future. But it is also a book about the future of U.S.-Cuban relations.
It could hardly be otherwise. In spite of a forty-year period with no formal diplomatic relations, the United States and Cuba have never ceased to be close to one another—not simply geographically but in terms of their broader political imaginations as well. No Latin American country arouses the level of interest that Cuba perennially evokes; one need only visit any bookstore or library in the United States to establish this fact. And no American or foreign visitor to Cuba can come away from the island without being struck by how firmly Cubans of all classes and political ideologies have their gaze fixed across the Florida straits. Acting as a bridge of sorts is a large, relatively affluent, and politically well-organized exile community centered in southern Florida, hostile to the regime that governs its homeland, but intensely involved with the island and its people in myriad other ways.

Trucking Country is a social history of long-haul trucking that explores the contentious politics of free-market capitalism in post-World War II America. The US Army was a relative latecomer to the tank business in World War 2. The US tank force on the eve of war In Europe in 1939 was that of second-rate power; indeed the US Army had fewer tanks than armies like Italy or Poland. The neglect of the US armored force was caused by a complicated set of conditions including the economic stagnation of the Great Depression, and the tendency towards isolationism in US foreign policy. By 1940, President Franklin Roosevelt had begun to commit the US Army to a major rebuilding due to the perception that the United States would eventually be dragged into war. An important element in this effort was the considerable expansion cf the US defense industry, to supply Lend Lease needs as well as the growing US Army.
The clearest evidence of the stagnation of American tark design was the US Army's first medium tank, the dreadful M2AI medium tank which was manufactured from December 1940 through August 1941. This embarrassing design was manufactured simply because no other types were available. It is a grim curiosity that the M2A1 entered production at exactly the same time that the T-34 medium tank entered production in the Soviet Union. Although US tank design had suffered from a lack of funding, the US Ordnance Corps had wisely chosen to invest its scanty budget in tank components, such as guns, transmissions, and suspensions. So when new tanks were demanded, the Ordnance Corps could -espond reasonably quickly, as occured in 1940.

This book consists of a new series of photos of the M4 Sherman in combat with the US Army in the European Theater during World War II. The M4 Sherman was the most widely used US tank of the war, with more Shermans manufactured than all German tanks combined. This book provides more detailed coverage of some of the campaigns than the previous volume, especially new coverage of the tank fighting in Italy in 1944-45, and more in-depth coverage of the fighting along the German Siegfried line in the autumn and winter of 1944-45. The author has discovered a large number (over 95%) of new, previously unpublished photos of the M4 in combat. These photos include those buried in the archives and from private collections. The book started with the North African debut, followed by the Italian Campaign, Normandy, Alsace, Low Countries, Siegfried Line, Battle of the Bulge, and finished with the Final Offensive of 1945.

Since the rise of the dime museum in the 19th century, tattooed bodies have been parading across stages both live and mediated. In so doing, the book combines the craft of cultural analysis with theories of performance while also generating a largely untold history of the tattooed body on display in the United States. Because of this unique combination, the book is truly interdisciplinary and appeals to multiple audiences. At the same time, it sustains a deep theoretical engagement with the central concepts of social and visual agency and the disruption of restrictive social norms. In the end, this study of the visual argues that the agency of images is located within, and not only in opposition to, cultural discourses such as gender, class, and exoticism.
