Barry Schwartz - Abraham Lincoln in the Post-Heroi c Era, History and Memory in Late Twentieth-Centur y America (2009).jpg

01 - USA - Barry Schwartz - Abraham Lincoln in the Post-Heroic Era...tory and Memory in Late Twentieth-Century America 2009.jpg

By the 1920s, Abraham Lincoln had transcended the lingering controversies of the Civil War to become a secular saint, honored in North and South alike for his steadfast leadership in crisis. Throughout the Great Depression and World War II, Lincoln was invoked countless times as a reminder of America’s strength and wisdom, a commanding ideal against which weary citizens could see their own hardships in perspective. But as Barry Schwartz reveals in Abraham Lincoln in the Post-Heroic Era, those years represent the apogee of Lincoln’s prestige. The decades following World War II brought radical changes to American culture, changes that led to the diminishing of all heroes—Lincoln not least among them. As Schwartz explains, growing sympathy for the plight of racial minorities, disenchantment with the American state, the lessening of patriotism in the wake of the Vietnam War, and an intensifying celebration of diversity, all contributed to a culture in which neither Lincoln nor any single person could be a heroic symbol for all Americans. Paradoxically, however, the very culture that made Lincoln an object of indifference, questioning, criticism, and even ridicule was a culture of unprecedented beneficence and inclusion, where racial, ethnic, and religious groups treated one another more fairly and justly than ever before. Thus, as the prestige of the Great Emancipator shrank, his legacy of equality continued to flourish.Drawing on a stunning range of sources—including films, cartoons, advertisements, surveys, shrine visitations, public commemorations, and more—Schwartz documents the decline of Lincoln’s public standing, asking throughout whether there is any path back from this post-heroic era. Can a new generation of Americans embrace again their epic past, including great leaders whom they know to be flawed? As the 2009 Lincoln Bicentennial approaches, readers will discover here a stirring reminder that Lincoln, as a man, still has much to say to us—about our past, our present, and our possible futures.

John McMurtry - The Cancer Stage of Capitalism (19 99).jpg

In this bold new look at the recent uncontrolled spread of global capitalism, John McMurtry, professor of philosophy at the University of Guelph, develops the metaphor of modern capitalism as a cancer. Its invasive growth, he argues, threatens to break down our society's immune system and--if not soon restrained--could reverse all the progress that has been made toward social equity and stability. On every continent, in every state, there are indicators of profound economic and environmental collapse.

01 - USA - Bonnie A. Osif, Anthony J. Baratta, Thomas W. Conkling...sland Nuclear Power Plant Accident and Its Impact 2004.jpg

Three Mile Island burst into the nation’s headlines twenty-five years ago, forever changing our view of nuclear power. The dramatic accident held the world’s attention for an unsettling week in March 1979 as engineers struggled to understand what had happened and to bring the damaged reactor to a safe condition. Much has been written since then about TMI, but it is not easy to find up-to-date information that is both reliable and accessible to the non-scientific reader. TMI offers a much needed "one-stop" resource for a new generation of citizens, students, and policy makers.
The legacy of Three Mile Island has been far reaching. The worst nuclear accident in U.S. history marked a turning point in our policies, our perceptions, and our national identity. Those involved in the nuclear industry today study the scenario carefully and review the decontamination and recovery process. Risk management and the ability to rationally and understandably convey risks to the general population are an integral part of implementation of new technologies. Political, environmental, and energy decisions have been made with TMI as a factor, and while studies reveal little environmental damage from the accident, long term studies of health effects continue. TMI presents a balanced and factual account of the accident, the cleanup effort, and the many facets of its legacy twenty-five years later.
The authors bring extensive research and writing experience to this book. After the accident and the cleanup, a significant collection of videotapes, photographs, and reports were donated to the University Libraries at Penn State University. Bonnie Osif and Thomas Conkling are engineering librarians at Penn State who maintain a database of these materials, which they have made available to the general public through an award-winning website. Anthony Baratta is a nuclear engineer who worked with the decontamination and recovery project at TMI and is an expert in nuclear accidents. The book features unique photographs of the cleanup and helpful appendixes that enable readers to further investigate various aspects of the story.

Robert Self - Britain, the US and the War Debt Con troversy, 1917-34 An Unspecial Relationship (2006).jpeg

Even at its peak, during the Second World War, the so-called "Special Relationship" between Britain and the United States meant rather different things to the two great English-speaking powers involved. Few issues more ably demonstrate the complex nature of this ambivalent relationship, between the wars, than the vexed question of British and Allied war debts to the United States after World War I. Robert Self focuses on this beguiling - and until now much neglected - period in Anglo-American relations. The war debt was a particularly sensitive area of discussion in a world beset by economic difficulty, and militarizing again in preparation for the next great outbreak of violence. Sentimental notions of shared cultural and democratic values were tempered by a growing awareness of conflicting commercial, economic, strategic, naval and diplomatic imperatives. Based upon extensive, previously unpublished archival research on both sides of the Atlantic, in official and private collections of papers, for the first time this book offers a detailed, comprehensive analysis of the origins of the war debt problem from the 1920s through to Roosevelt's Lend-Lease programme in 1940-41. This new volume fills in the details of this crucial period of transition, and sets the stage for the events that occurred during the second war and beyond. It will be of great interest for diplomats, journalists, as well as students and scholars of political, diplomatic, economic and international history.

Stephen W. Sears, Mark E. Neely, Gabor S. Boritt, Gabor S. Boritt, Michael Fellman, John Y. Simon - Lincoln's Generals (1995).jpg

01 - USA - Stephen W. Sears, Mark E. Neely, Gabor S. Boritt, Gabor...ichael Fellman, John Y. Simon - Lincolns Generals 1995.jpg

From the moment the battle ended, Gettysburg was hailed as one of the greatest triumphs of the Union army. Celebrations erupted across the North as a grateful people cheered the victory. But Gabor Boritt turns our attention away from the rejoicing millions to the dark mood of the White House--where Lincoln cried in frustration as General Meade let the largest Confederate army escape safely into Virginia. Such unexpected portraits abound in Lincoln's Generals, as a team of distinguished historians probes beyond the popular anecdotes and conventional wisdom to offer a fascinating look at Lincoln's relationship with his commanders. In Lincoln's Generals, Boritt and his fellow contributors examine the interaction between the president and five key generals: McClellan, Hooker, Meade, Sherman, and Grant. In each chapter, the authors provide new insight into this mixed bag of officers and the president's tireless efforts to work with them. Even Lincoln's choice of generals was not as ill-starred as we think, writes Pulitzer Prize-winner Mark E. Neely, Jr.: compared to most Victorian-era heads of state, he had a fine record of selecting commanders (for example, the contemporary British gave us such bywords for incompetence as "the charge of the Light Brigade," while Napoleon III managed to lose the entire French army). But the president's relationship with his generals was never easy. In these pages, Stephen Sears underscores McClellan's perverse obstinancy as Lincoln tried everything to drive him ahead. Neely sheds new light on the president's relationship with Hooker, arguing that he was wrong to push the general to attack at Chancellorsville. Boritt writes about Lincoln's prickly relationship with the victor of Gettysburg, "old snapping turtle" George Meade. Michael Fellman reveals the political stress between the White House and William T. Sherman, a staunch conservative who did not want blacks in his army but who was crucial to the war effort. And John Y. Simon looks past the legendary camaraderie between Lincoln and Grant to reveal the tensions in their relationship. Perhaps no other episode has been more pivotal in the nation's history than the Civil War--and yet so much of these massive events turned on a few distinctive personalities. Lincoln's Generals is a brilliant portrait that takes us inside the individual relationships that shaped the course of our most costly war.

Ang Cheng Guan - Ending the Vietnam War, The Vietn amese Communists' Perspective (2003).jpg

Existing studies of the Vietnam War have been written mostly from an American perspective, using western sources, and viewing the conflict through western eyes. This book, based on extensive original research, including Vietnamese, Chinese and former Soviet sources, tells the story of the war from the Tet offensive in 1968 up to the reunification of Vietnam in April 1975. Overall, it provides an important corrective to the predominantly US-centric narratives of the war by placing the Vietnamese communists center-stage in the story. It is a sequel to the author's RoutledgeCurzon book The Vietnam War From the Other Side, which covers the period 1962-68.

In this study Colonel Mark A. Bucknam examines the role that theater-level commanders in the UN and NATO played in influencing airpower over Bosnia between April 1993 and December 1995. He presents it in a chronological order that offers a coherent account of Operation Deny Flight. This study challenges assumptions about military leaders, their motivations, and the state of civil-military relations during the Bosnia conflict.

Richard Mosey - 2030, The Coming Tumult, Unlimited Growth on a Finite Planet (2009).jpg

The American middle class is disappearing, and our obtuse emphasis on growth rather than stability ensures this. Economic collapse is only accelerating the privatization of essential resources like water. Economic globalization will exacerbate planetary decline and create poverty for at least 80 percent of Americans (and those in developing countries).
Environmentalist and writer Richard Mosey shows why scientists are woefully incapable of competing with corporations in a public relations and legislative war. He explores the role of corporations in creating a debate where no debate exists, and he exposes the professional and academic global warming deniers and the funding sources that inspire their research.

01 - USA - Stjepan G. Mestrovic - The Good Soldier on Trial, A Soc...itary Pertaining to Operation Iron Triangle, Iraq 2009.jpg

An expert witness in legal cases involving rules of engagement and the US military murder of prisoners, Prof. Stjepan Mestrovic exposes profound contradictions and systemic flaws that confuse criminal brutality and heroism, making victims of soldiers like Sergeant Michael Leahy who won a purple heart but also was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2009.
A shocking follow-up study of Operation Iron Triangle, Iraq, the current work outlines the treatment of US soldiers who apparently were following their orders as they understood them and who were then accused of having committed war crimes. These include Corey Clagett and William Hunsaker, who were charged in the Iron Triangle incident, and Michael Leahy and Joseph Mayo (from the February 2009 case).

Asbjørn Grønstad - Transfigurations, Violence, Dea th and Masculinity in American Cinema (2008).jpg

01 - USA - Asbjrn Grnstad - Transfigurations, Violence, Death and Masculinity in American Cinema 2008.jpg

In many senses, viewers have cut their teeth on the violence in American cinema: from Anthony Perkins slashing Janet Leigh in the most infamous of shower scenes; to the 1970s masterpieces of Martin Scorsese, Sam Peckinpah and Francis Ford Coppola; to our present-day undertakings in imagining global annihilations through terrorism, war, and alien grudges. Transfigurations brings our cultural obsession with film violence into a renewed dialogue with contemporary theory. Grønstad argues that the use of violence in Hollywood films should be understood semiotically rather than viewed realistically; Tranfigurations thus alters both our methodology of reading violence in films and the meanings we assign to them, depicting violence not as a self-contained incident, but as a convoluted network of our own cultural ideologies and beliefs.

J. Sakai - Settlers, The Mythology of the White Pr oletariat (1983).jpg

"Settlers" chronicles the history of race and class in America and the way in which they have historically intertwined. The Settlers thesis is well-argued and defended by many historical examples and evidence, mostly in the historical parts chronicling the pre-WWI history of the US. As such, it provides a highly interesting and useful theory that, unlike the rambling and opportunistic efforts of the American intellectual left, can actually explain the eternal question of why the US has lacked a coherent political force for the workers. Sakai's booklet is however marred to an extent by his sometimes overly sectarian and hateful approach, as well as by his failure to overcome the pointless and outdated ideas of secessionism on the part of the exploited minority 'Nations'. The developments in American politics of the last 25 years or so have decisively shown that American imperialism will always rather choose to unite its member ethnic groups to share the spoils of exploiting the rest of the world rather than risking an internal war that weakens it, and the laborers of this American imperial power will also prefer this, also when they are black or hispanic - Sakai is here clearly inferior in understanding to H.W. Edwards, who analyzed the power of social-democracy as based on the labor aristocracy created by _internationally_ exploitative relations, a pattern which can be viewed in America as much as anywhere else (e.g. Obama's run for the Presidency).

Thomas G. Paterson - Kennedy's Quest for Victory, American Foreign Policy, 1961-1963 (1989).jpg

The first major reassessment of John F. Kennedy's foreign policy since his death, this volume of original essays compels new thinking about the 1960s. Basing their analysis on extensive research in archival documents and oral histories, twelve accomplished historians explore the primary foreign policy assumptions and objectives of Kennedy and his advisers. The contributors examine the Cold War, global crisis, domestic politics, decision-making, personality and style, and historical lessons in shaping Kennedy's diplomacy. This provocative volume explores such key issues as the Atlantic alliance, nuclear arms, United States economic hegemony, the Cuban missile crisis and the covert war against Fidel Castro, Third World neutralism, the Peace Corps, and the Vietnam War. The contributors also examine the Kennedy Administration's policies towards Latin America, Canada, the Middle East, South Asia, China, and Africa, and assess the costs and consequences of Kennedy's record. The Kennedy legacy included a deepening war in Vietnam, an accelerated nuclear arms race, excessive activism in the Third World, greater factionalism in the Atlantic community, and a globalism of overcommitment. These well-researched essays challenge us to reckon with a past that has not always matched the selfless and self-satisfying image Americans have of their foreign policy and of Kennedy as their young, fallen hero who never had a chance to fulfill his goals. Identifying arrogance, ignorance, impatience, and exaggerations of the Communist threat as the factors that actually denied Kennedy the victory he craved, this study reveals that he had his chance--and he failed.
