Joel Levy - Secret History, Hidden Forces That Sha ped the Past (2005).jpg

Investigating the secret societies, spies, classified projects, cults, and pacts that controlled the destinies of nations and empires, this historical exposé reveals the conspiracies that have changed the course of history. From the dirty dealings of the Louisiana Purchase and the Iran-Contra affair to the Trojan Horse and the research race to the moon, this examination proves that much of world history can be traced directly to classified plots and shadowy figures. These true accounts of espionage and secret organizations show the details necessary to paint a complete picture of the past.

John O'shaughnessy - Persuasion in Advertising (20 03).jpg

Persuasion in Advertising seeks to explain how advertising works and sets out the strategies for advertisers to adopt for persuasion. Persuasion is often the core of the marketing task and effective advertizing is always persuasive advertising; however, not all advertising seeks to persuade. Drawing on empirical research, concepts and case examples from both the US and Europe, this book illustrates how theory is put into practice, offering readers a practical and in-depth guide to the art of advertising persuasion.

Diana Preston - Before the Fall-Out, From Marie C urie to Hiroshima (2006).jpg

A history of the Atomic Bomb from Marie Curie to Hiroshima.
“I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds”
— Oppenheimer quoting the Bhagavad Gita after witnessing the successful demonstration of the atom bomb.
The bomb, which killed an estimated 140,000 civilians in Hiroshima and destroyed the countryside for miles around, was one of the defining moments in world history. That mushroom cloud cast a terrifying shadow over the contemporary world and continues to do so today. But how could this have happened? What led to the creation of such a weapon of mass destruction?
From the moment scientists contemplated the destructive potential of splitting the atom, the role of science changed. Ethical and moral dilemmas faced all those who realized the implications of their research. Before the Fall-Out charts the chain of events from Marie Curie’s scientific breakthrough through the many colourful characters such as Einstein, Robert Oppenheimer and Lord Rutherford, whose discoveries contributed to the bomb.
The story of the atomic bomb spans 50 years of prolific scientific innovation, turbulent politics, foreign affairs and world-changing history. Through personal stories of exile, indecision and soul-searching, to charges of collaboration, spying and deceit, Diana Preston presents the human side of an unstoppable programme with a lethal outcome.

Kevin Lynch - The Image of the City (1960).jpg

What does the city's form actually mean to the people who live there? What can the city planner do to make the city's image more vivid and memorable to the city dweller? To answer these questions, Mr. Lynch, supported by studies of Los Angeles, Boston, and Jersey City, formulates a new criterion--imageability--and shows its potential value as a guide for the building and rebuilding of cities. The wide scope of this study leads to an original and vital method for the evaluation of city form. The architect, the planner, and certainly the city dweller will all want to read this book.

Alan Gallay - The Indian Slave Trade, The Rise of the English Empire in the American South, 1670-171 7 (2002).jpg

01 - USA - Alan Gallay - The Indian Slave Trade, The Rise of the E...e English Empire in the American South, 1670-1717 2002.jpg

This absorbing book is the first ever to focus on the traffic in Indian slaves during the early years of the American South. The Indian slave trade was of central importance from the Carolina coast to the Mississippi Valley for nearly fifty years, linking southern lives and creating a whirlwind of violence and profit-making, argues Alan Gallay. He documents in vivid detail how the trade operated, the processes by which Europeans and Native Americans became participants, and the profound consequences for the South and its peoples. The author places Native Americans at the center of the story of European colonization and the evolution of plantation slavery in America. He explores the impact of such contemporary forces as the African slave trade, the unification of England and Scotland, and the competition among European empires as well as political and religious divisions in England and in South Carolina. Gallay also analyzes how Native American societies approached warfare, diplomacy, and decisions about allying and trading with Europeans. His wide-ranging research not only illuminates a crucial crossroad of European and Native American history but also establishes a new context for understanding racism, colonialism, and the meaning of ethnicity in early America.

Susanna Delfino, Michele Gillespie - Neither Lady nor Slave, Working Women of the Old South (2002).jpg

Although historians over the past two decades have written extensively on the plantation mistress and the slave woman, they have largely neglected the world of the working woman. Neither Lady nor Slave pushes southern history beyond the plantation to examine the lives and labors of ordinary southern women--white, free black, and Indian. Contributors to this volume illuminate women's involvement in the southern market economy in all its diversity. Thirteen essays explore the working lives of a wide range of women--nuns and prostitutes, iron workers and basket weavers, teachers and domestic servants--in urban and rural settings across the South. By highlighting contrasts between paid and unpaid, officially acknowledged and "invisible" work within the context of cultural attitudes regarding women's proper place in society, the book sheds new light on the ambiguities that marked relations between race, class, and gender in the modernizing South.

S. Craig Watkins - Hip Hop Matters, Politics, Pop Culture, and the Struggle for the Soul of a Moveme nt (2006).jpg

01 - USA - S. Craig Watkins - Hip Hop Matters, Politics, Pop Cult...ture, and the Struggle for the Soul of a Movement 2006.jpg

Avoiding the easy definitions and caricatures that tend to celebrate or condemn the “hip hop generation,” Hip Hop Matters focuses on fierce and far-reaching battles being waged in politics, pop culture, and academe to assert control over the movement. At stake, Watkins argues, is the impact hip hop has on the lives of the young people who live and breathe the culture. He presents incisive analysis of the corporate takeover of hip hop and the rampant misogyny that undermines the movement’s progressive claims. Ultimately, we see how hip hop struggles reverberate in the larger world: global media consolidation; racial and demographic flux; generational cleavages; the reinvention of the pop music industry; and the ongoing struggle to enrich the lives of ordinary youth.

Alan Krell - The Devil's Rope, A Cultural History of Barbed Wire (2003).jpg

While barbed wire has always cut across property, war and politics as a tool of control, it has other histories, constructed through image and text in the arts, media and popular culture, which have never before been examined. Invented in France in 1860 and welcomed by the frontier farmers of America, the menacing qualities of barbed wire became evident in the Boer War, the barbed wire no-man's-land of World War I, and the Nazi concentration camps of World War II. Barbed wire became synonymous with repression. In the art of the late-twentieth century, its ambivalent character has made barbed wire the perfect symbol of post-modernity. Alan Krell's amazing story investigates the place barbed wire holds in the social imagination.

Robert M. Fogelson - Downtown, Its Rise and Fall, 1880-1950 (2003).jpg

Downtown is the first history of what was once viewed as the heart of the American city. Urban historian Robert Fogelson gives a riveting account of how downtown—and the way Americans thought about it—changed between 1880 and 1950. Recreating battles over subways and skyscrapers, the introduction of elevated highways and parking bans, and other controversies, this book provides a new and often startling perspective on downtown’s rise and fall.

Nils Gilman - Mandarins of the Future, Modernizati on Theory in Cold War America (2007).jpg

Because it provided the dominant framework for "development" of poor, postcolonial countries, modernization theory ranks among the most important constructs of twentieth-century social science. In Mandarins of the Future: Modernization Theory in Cold War America Nils Gilman offers the first intellectual history of a movement that has had far-reaching and often unintended consequences. After a survey of the theory's origins and its role in forming America's postwar sense of global mission, Gilman offers a close analysis of the people who did the most to promote it in the United States and the academic institutions they came to dominate. He first explains how Talcott Parsons at Harvard constructed a social theory that challenged the prevailing economics-centered understanding of the modernization process, then describes the work of Edward Shils and Gabriel Almond in helping Parsonsian ideas triumph over other alternative conceptions of the development process, and finally discusses the role of Walt Rostow and his colleagues at M.I.T. in promoting modernization theory during the Kennedy and Johnson administrations. By connecting modernization theory to the welfare state liberalism programs of the New Deal order, Gilman not only provides a new intellectual context for America's Third World during the Cold War, but also connects the optimism of the Great Society to the notion that American power and good intentions could stop the postcolonial world from embracing communism.

Mary Brennan - Wives, Mothers, and the Red Menace, Conservative Women and the Crusade Against Commun ism (2008).jpg

01 - USA - Mary Brennan - Wives, Mothers, and the Red Menace, Cons...servative Women and the Crusade Against Communism 2008.jpg

In Wives, Mothers, and the Red Menace, Mary Brennan examines conservative women's anti-communist activism in the years immediately after World War II.

Brennan details the actions and experiences of prominent anti-communists Jean Kerr McCarthy, Margaret Chase Smith, Freda Utley, Doloris Thauwald Bridges, Elizabeth Churchill Brown, and Phyllis Stewart Schlafly. She describes the Cold War context in which these women functioned and the ways in which women saw communism as a very real danger to domestic security and American families. Millions of women, Brennan notes, expanded their notions of household responsibilities to include the crusade against communism. From writing letters and hosting teas to publishing books and running for political office, they campaigned against communism and, incidentally, discovered the power they had to effect change through activism.

Brennan reveals how the willingness of these deeply conservative women to leave the domestic sphere and engage publicly in politics evinces the depth of America's postwar fear of communism. She further argues that these conservative, anti-communist women pushed the boundaries of traditional gender roles and challenged assumptions about women as political players by entering political life to publicly promote their ideals. Wives, Mothers, and the Red Menace offers a fascinating analysis of gender and politics at a critical point in American history. Brennan's work will instigate discussions among historians, political scientists, and scholars of women's studies.

Richard L. Legault - Trends in American Gun Owners hip (2008).jpg

Using data from 16 years of the General Social Surveys, Legault examines changes in HGO over time. A number of hypotheses to explain changes in HGO reporting are evaluated and tested including differential reporting by men and women (Gender Gap), changes in household makeup and population, the urbanization of America, and an actual reduction in overall firearms ownership. These hypotheses are tested using logistic regression, logistic fixed-effects models, and changing parameter models. Results of these tests imply that recent reductions in HGO may not be as pronounced as once thought, and are due to a complex interplay of a variety of demographic changes in the U.S. population.

Donald MacKay - Scotland Farewell, The People of t he Hector (2001).jpg

The story of the Highland Scots who sailed to Pictou, Nova Scotia in 1773 aboard the brig "Hector". They voyaged to escape famine, intolerable treatment from their landlords and above all to search for a land of their own. They had been promised prime farming land but found only virgin forest. Somehow, with great courage and tenacity, and with the help of the native Indians they survived and their achievements encouraged further shiploads of emigrants to join them. This piece of Canadian history is also part of the history of Scotland and the Scottish people.

Lucille H. Campey - After the Hector, The Scottish Pioneers of Nova Scotia and Cape Breton, 1773-185 2 (2007).jpg

01 - USA - Lucille H. Campey - After the Hector, The Scottish Pion...ioneers of Nova Scotia and Cape Breton, 1773-1852 2007.jpg

This is the first fully documented and detailed account, produced in recent times, of one of the greatest early migrations of Scots to North America. The arrival of the Hector in 1773, with nearly 200 Scottish passengers, sparked a huge influx of Scots to Nova Scotia and Cape Breton. Thousands of Scots, mainly from the Highlands and Islands, streamed into the province during the late 1700s and the first half of the nineteenth century. Lucille Campey traces the process of emigration and explains why Scots chose their different settlement locations in Nova Scotia and Cape Breton. Much detailed information has been distilled to provide new insights on how, why and when the province came to acquire its distinctive Scottish communities. Challenging the widely held assumption that this was primarily a flight from poverty, After the Hector reveals how Scots were being influenced by positive factors, such as the opportunity for greater freedoms and better livelihoods. The suffering and turmoil of the later Highland Clearances have cast a long shadow over earlier events, creating a false impression that all emigration had been forced on people. Hard facts show that most emigration was voluntary, self-financed and pursued by people expecting to improve their economic prospects. A combination of push and pull factors brought Scots to Nova Scotia, laying down a rich and deep seam of Scottish culture that continues to flourish. Extensively documented with all known passenger lists and details of over three hundred ship crossings, this book tells their story.
