Bright blue skies and fluffy white clouds. In the distance, thick white contrails stream behind formations of heavy bombers. Above, around, and to the front, smaller contrails are etched against the sky in a gently weaving pattern. At the front of each trail, are small silvery fighters, each suddenly shedding a pair of drop tanks and pulling around in a hard diving turn. The song of the Merlin and the rattle of machine gun fire and another Luftwaffe fighter begins its long smoking descent to the fields of Germany 25,000 feet below. One more that won't get to the bombers...
Mention the P-51 Mustang to any World War II buff and that, or a similar image, is what comes lo mind. It wasn't always that way. The Mustang started life as a private venture — some might say gamble — on the part of the fledgling North American Aviation Company to build a fighter for Britain's Royal Air Force. The RAF wanted North American to license build Curtiss P-40s, however, company president James H. "Dutch" Kindelberger convinced the British Purchasing Commission that he could build a fighter that was faster, more maneuver-able, and could fly farther than the P-40 while using the same engine. It was a tall order. Using data purchased from Curtiss and NACA, the North American design and construction teams worked around the clock. Some 120 days later, the NA-73X airframe was rolled out in September of 1940. Although lacking an engine, and being rolled out on borrowed wheels, the new ship looked every inch the fighter it promised to be.
Powered by an Allison engine, the first RAF machine rolled off the assembly line in mid-April 1941. The first RAF combat mission took place in May of 1942. The Mustang started it's combat life, not as a high altitude fighter, but as a low level reconnaissance and Army Cooperation aircraft. The Allison engine simply lacked power at higher altitudes — altitudes above 20,000. The problem was not so much with the engine as it was with the simple single stage supercharger.
Through 1942 and into 1943, the Allison-powered Mustangs evolved into a potent dive bomber, reconnaissance, and ground attack aircraft. At lower altitudes, they could hold their own and then some against enemy fighters, including the Luftwaffe's vaunted h'ocke Wulf Fwl90. Almost 1600 Allison engined Mustang I. P-51, A-36, and P-51A aircraft were built. Their homes ranged from the mud and fog of an English country airfield, to the blazing sands of North Africa, to the hot and humid sub-tropics of India and Burma.
Silvery? Not these aircraft. Despite their clean lines and racing plane looks, their world was down low where they used dull greens, browns, and grays to blend in with the terrain. Often at the end of the supply line, their drab, patchy, and faded colors were streaked with fluids and exhaust stains. The early Mustang and its Allison engine was a worker. Featuring Native American groups from the northern reaches of Canada to the Rio Grande, this encyclopedia presents basic information about each tribal nation in a consistent manner. Organized geographically, each section begins with an introduction to the area and its original inhabitants. Tribal entries follow, with some smaller related groups discussed together. Each article includes sections on location, population, language, history, religion, government, customs, dwellings, diet, key technology, trade, notable arts, transportation, dress, and war/ weapons. A contemporary section follows, with information on government/reservations, economy, legal status, and daily life. Pritzker (the author of books on Ansel Adams, Mathew Brady, and Edward Curtis) is one of the few authors to attempt a work of this size alone. His presentation is even-handed, although some sections, like art, seem less thorough than others. Pritzker manages for the most part to avoid the extensive duplication found in the more expensive Gale Encyclopedia of Native American Tribes (LJ 5/15/98), but a few small groups, such as the Shinnecock, are excluded. Articles do not have bibliographic references, and citations of books on individual tribes are not included in the bibliography. Still, this is a good choice for public and school libraries that have other options for bibliographic sources.

This book blows away the conventional interpretations of the crash of 1929, not only in its contents but that this book exists at all. It was written in 1931. He ascribes the crash to the pile of up debt, which in turn was made possible by the Fed printing machine. This created distortions in the production structure that cried out for correction. So what is the answer? Let the correction happen and learn from our mistakes.

Such is the thesis of the great Garet Garrett. But take note: this book was a big seller in 1931. In other words, two years before FDR arrived with his destructive New Deal, ascribing the depression to capitalism and speculation, Garrett had already explained what was really behind the correction.

It took Murray Rothbard to resurrect these truths decades later, and when he wrote this in 1963, it was a shock and we are still fighting an uphill battle to explain the true causes of the crash and following depression. But here in this wonderful book is an actual contemporary account that spelled it out plainly for the world to see.

No more can we say that people back then could not have understood. Garrett told them. And thanks to this new edition of this classic and important work, he is telling us again today.

The 1864 Sand Creek Massacre is one of the most disturbing and controversial events in American history. The Fabulous History of the Dismal Swamp Company begins, appropriately, amidst a time of extraordinary popular delusions. The mania surrounding the Mississippi Company and the South Sea Bubble was just properly breaking around 1720, leaving countless speculators broken and penniless. But any lessons to be learned from these legendary schemes seem lost on the principals of Charles Royster's historical epic, including such august figures as George Washington and Virginia's William Byrd. They--apparently like all other men of means at the time--were driven to convert the vast tracts of America into cold, hard cash. Speculation on land, along with the various ventures intended to exploit it profitably, is the central theme to Royster's interconnected patchwork of stories that spans some hundred years and sprawls the better part of the globe. Nearly all these tales relate to, if sometimes obliquely, a particular company and the men (including a young George Washington) who founded it to "save" the impassable, frog-infested marsh on the Virginia-North Carolina border known as the Great Dismal Swamp. (Never mind that local folk thought of it as "a low sunken morass, not fit for any of the purposes of Agriculture.")
Fortunately, Royster, an accomplished historian and author of the Francis Parkman Prize-winning A Revolutionary People at War, had more luck getting something valuable out of the Dismal Swamp than his Colonial predecessors. His richly detailed, circuitous saga makes for dense, satisfying reading.
