Rob McQueen - A Social History of Company Law (200 9).jpg

The history of incorporations legislation and its administration is intimately tied to changes in social beliefs in respect to the role and purpose of the corporation. By studying the evolution of the corporate form in Britain and a number of its colonial possessions, the book illuminates debates on key concepts including the meanings of laissez faire, freedom of commerce, the notion of corporate responsibility and the role of the state in the regulation of business. In doing so, the book advances our understanding of the shape, effectiveness and deficiencies of modern regulatory regimes.

01 - USA - David A. Zonderman - Aspirations and Anxieties, New En...kers and the Mechanized Factory System, 1815-1850 1992.jpg

Aspirations and Anxieties is a working class intellectual history of early factory operatives in antebellum New England. The book focuses on the operatives' perceptions of technological and socio-economic changes in the mechanized workplace. The study uncovers a complex debate over many facets of the factory system--the machines and factory buildings, wages and hours, relations between managers and workers, and the content and character of protest. Finally, the book argues that the roots of this debate lie in the struggle to define the meaning of work itself in a period of profound social change.

Edward J. Balleisen - Navigating Failure, Bankrupt cy and Commercial Society in Antebellum America (2 001).jpg

The "self-made" man is a familiar figure in nineteenth-century American history. But the relentless expansion of market relations that facilitated such stories of commercial success also ensured that individual bankruptcy would become a prominent feature in the nation's economic landscape. In this ambitious foray into the shifting character of American capitalism, Edward Balleisen explores the economic roots and social meanings of bankruptcy, assessing the impact of widespread insolvency on the evolution of American law, business culture, and commercial society.Balleisen makes innovative use of the rich and previously overlooked court records generated by the 1841 Federal Bankruptcy Act, building his arguments on the commercial biographies of hundreds of failed business owners. He crafts a nuanced account of how responses to bankruptcy shaped two opposing elements of capitalist society in mid-nineteenth-century America--an entrepreneurial ethos grounded in risk taking and the ceaseless search for new markets, new products, and new ways of organizing economic activity, and an urban, middle-class sensibility increasingly averse to the dangers associated with independent proprietorship and increasingly predicated on salaried, white-collar employment.

01 - USA - Larry D. Lankton - Beyond the Boundaries, Life and Land...cape at the Lake Superior Copper Mines, 1840-1875 1997.jpg

Winner of the 1992 Great Lakes History Prize, Cradle to Grave: Life, Work, and Death at the Lake Superior Copper Mines (OUP 1991) related the history of the copper mining industry along Upper Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula. A companion volume to Cradle to Grave, Beyond the Boundaries focuses on the settlement of this region between 1840 and 1875. While Cradle to Grave was concerned with the rise and fall of the industry itself, Beyond the Boundaries examines everyday life on the mining frontier and explores how pioneers transformed a wilderness into a industrial landscape and society.Beyond the Boundaries tells the story of "reluctant pioneers" who attempted to establish a decent measure of comfort, control, and security in what was in many ways a hostile environment. It is essentially a book about men, women, children, and families - not just their workplaces, but their homes, stores, churches, schools, hospitals, and other aspects of community life.

Joseph A. Conforti - Saints and Strangers, New Eng land in British North America (2005).jpg

In the first general history of colonial New England to be published in over twenty-five years, Joseph A. Conforti synthesizes current and classic scholarship to explore how Puritan saints and "strangers" to Puritanism participated in the making of colonial New England. Massachusetts Governor John Winthrop's famous description of New England as a "city upon a hill" has tended to reduce the region's history to an exclusively Pilgrim-Puritan drama, a world of narrow-minded founders, the First Thanksgiving, steepled churches, and the Salem witchcraft trials. In a concise volume aimed at general readers and college students as well as historians, Conforti shows that New England was neither as Puritan nor as insular as most familiar stories imply. As the region evolved into British America's preeminent maritime region, the Atlantic Ocean served as a highway of commercial and cultural encounter, connecting white English settlers to different races and religious communities of the transatlantic world. The Puritan elect -- but also Natives, African slaves, and non-Puritan white settlers -- became active participants in the creation of colonial New England. Conforti discusses how these subcommunities of white, red, and black strangers to Protestant piety retained their own cultures, coexisted, and even thrived within and beyond the domains of Puritan settlement, creating tensions and pressure points in the later development of early America.

William Labov - The Social Stratification of Engli sh in New York City (2006).jpg

One of the first accounts of social variation in language, this groundbreaking study founded the discipline of sociolinguistics, providing the model on which thousands of studies have been based. In this second edition, Labov looks back on forty years of sociolinguistic research, bringing the reader up to date on its methods, findings and achievements. In over thirty pages of new material, he explores the unforeseen implications of his earlier work, addresses the political issues involved, and evaluates the success of newer approaches to sociolinguistic investigation. In doing so, he reveals the outstanding accomplishments of sociolinguistics since his original study, which laid the foundations for studying language variation, introduced the crucial concept of the linguistic variable, and showed how variation across age groups is an indicator of language change. Bringing Labov's pioneering study into the 21st century, this classic volume will remain the benchmark in the field for years to come.

Clay McShane - Down the Asphalt Path (1995).jpg

Imagine a world without automobiles, traffic lights, and interstate highways. Or the words and . For a nation that prides itself on the freedom of movement and the long weekend, this seems nearly impossible. In , Clay McShane examines the uniquely American relation between automobility and urbanization. Writing at the cutting edge of urban and technological history, McShane focuses on how new transportation systems -most important, the private automobile -and new concepts of the city redefined each other in modern America. We swiftly motor across the country from Boston to New York to Milwaukee to Los Angeles and the suburbs in between as McShane chronicles the urban embrace of the automobile. McShane begins with mid-nineteenth century municipal bans on horseless carriages, a response to public fears of accidents and pollution. After cities redesigned roads to encourage new forms of trasnport, especially trolley cars, light carriages, and bicycles, the bans disappeared in the 1890s. With the advent of the automobile, metropolitan elites quickly and permanently established cars as status symbols. also explains the escapist appeal of the motor car to many Americans constrained by traditional social values. This book includes more than thirty photographs detailing the transformation of urban transportation. They bring to life chapters on modes of travel before the trolley; the push for parks, parkways, and suburbanization; the car in popular culture; and the battle for traffic safety and regulation. McShane's analysis of gender relations in the rise of automobility -in particular, definitions of gender in terms of mechanical skill and of driving as male power -is both timely and innovative. Wonderfully readable, this book will be a treasure for readers of urban history, popular culture, and technology -as well as car buffs.

Iwan W. Morgan, Philip J. Davies - The Federal Nat ion, Perspectives on American Federalism (2008).jpg

Federalism is often described as the greatest of the American contributions to the art of government, but it has been an evolving and protean entity since its original establishment in the Constitution. Based on the contributions of international scholars, this volume explores three facets of modern federalism: the vertical tensions over the distribution of authority between national and sub-national governments; the tensions between the national government’s role as the instrument of policy uniformity throughout the nation and the inclination of the states to take different approaches to similar issues in light of their own political cultures; and the changing context of federalism in the more conservative political context of recent times. In addition, a number of the essays explore the Canadian model of federalism, which helps to place the U.S. model in comparative context.

Theophus H. Smith - Conjuring Culture, Biblical Fo rmations of Black America (1994).jpg

This book provides a sophisticated new interdisciplinary interpretation of the formulation and evolution of African American religion and culture. Theophus Smith argues for the central importance of "conjure"--a magical means of transforming reality--in black spirituality and culture. Smith shows that the Bible, the sacred text of Western civilization, has in fact functioned as a magical formulary for African Americans. Going back to slave religion, and continuing in black folk practice and literature to the present day, the Bible has provided African Americans with ritual prescriptions for prophetically re-envisioning, and thereby transforming, their history and culture.

This work provides a systematic look at cultural differences across a variety of fields: commercial, bureaucratic, professional and social settings, illustrated with many case studies and examples. It shows readers how to deal with different norms, expectations and behaviour patterns, and how to cope with what outsiders often see as the rudeness and abruptness of everyday life in Israel, where there is little predictability and where things can appear to be always in motion.

Didier Chaudet, Florent Parmentier, Benoit Pelopid as - When Empire Meets Nationalism (2009).jpg

"When Empire Meets Nationalism" presents an in-depth political and sociological analysis of the internal power politics and imperial forms developed by the Russian neo-eurasianists and the neo-conservatives in the United States. This innovative study traces the growth of nationalism and the concept of 'Empire' in relation to the ideologies and foreign policy of, both Russia and the USA. Beginning with the genealogy of the two movements, the authors present the intricacy of imperial rhetoric and nationalist ideologies in modern states compared to the distinctive definition of Empire as a politico-historical form. The extent to which these influences and ideas have succeeded in shaping the foreign policy of Russia and the USA are then applied to events in Afghanistan, China, Georgia, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey. Each example asserts that the historical and political richness of the so-called imperial forms and the legitimacy of such a denomination will remain. The combination of the political theory and geopolitics with a broad selection of case studies from across the world makes this cutting edge examination of neo-conservatism and neo-eurasianism a must read to all interested in the evolving discourse surrounding Empire.

Angela M. Blake - How New York Became American, 18 90-1924 (2006).jpg

For many Americans at the turn of the twentieth century and into the 1920s, the city of New York conjured dark images of crime, poverty, and the desperation of crowded immigrants. In How New York Became American, 1890--1924 Angela Blake explores how advertising professionals and savvy business leaders "reinvented" the city, creating a brand image of New York that capitalized on the trend toward pleasure travel. Blake examines the ways in which these early boosters built on the attention drawn to the city and its exotic populations to craft an image of New York City as America writ urban -- a place where the arts flourished, diverse peoples lived together boisterously but peacefully, and where one could enjoy a visit. Drawing on a wide range of textual and visual primary sources, Blake guides the reader through New York's many civic identities, from the first generation of New York skyscrapers and their role in "Americanizing" the city to the promotion of Midtown as the city's definitive public face. Her study ranges from the late 1890s into the early twentieth century, when the United States suddenly emerged as an imperial power, and the nation's industry, commerce, and culture stood poised to challenge Europe's global dominance. New York, the nation's largest city, became the de facto capital of American culture. Social reformers and tourism boosters, keen to see America's cities rival those of France or Britain, jockeyed for financial and popular support. Blake weaves a compelling story of a city's struggle for metropolitan and national status and its place in the national imagination.
