There is a crisis today in the American family, and this crisis has been particularly severe in the African American community. Black women are more likely than ever to bear children as teenagers, to remain single, and to raise their children in poverty. As a result, a staggering number of African-American children are growing up without fathers and living in destitution. In this insightful new book, Donna L. Franklin offers an in depth account of the history and development of the African American family, revealing why the marriage and family experiences of African-Americans differs from those of white America, and highlighting the cultural and governmental forces that have combined to create this divide and to push the black family to the edge of catastrophe.

As the United States marks the 150th anniversary of our defining national drama, 1861 presents a gripping and original account of how the Civil War began.

1861 is an epic of courage and heroism beyond the battlefields. Early in that fateful year, a second American revolution unfolded, inspiring a new generation to reject their parents faith in compromise and appeasement, to do the unthinkable in the name of an ideal. It set Abraham Lincoln on the path to greatness and millions of slaves on the road to freedom. The book introduces us to a heretofore little-known cast of Civil War heroes--among them an acrobatic militia colonel, an explorer's wife, an idealistic band of German immigrants, a regiment of New York City firemen, a community of Virginia slaves, and a young college professor who would one day become president.

Adam Goodheart takes us from the corridors of the White House to the slums of Manhattan, from the mouth of the Chesapeake to the deserts of Nevada, from Boston Common to Alcatraz Island, vividly evoking the Union at this moment of ultimate crisis and decision.

This history of tort law in America looks at how the subject has been conceptualized, pointing out why changes in rules occurred, and who did the changing. White approaches his subject from four perspectives: intellectual history, the sociology of knowledge, the phenomoenon of professionalization in the late 19th and 20th centuries in America, and the recurrent concerns of tort law since it became a discrete field.

Bynum (Unruly Women: The Politics of Social and Sexual Control in the Old South), a historian at Texas State University, offers an analysis of home front schisms in three Confederate regions: Big Thicket in eastern Texas, Piedmont North Carolina's Quaker Belt, and the counties in Mississippi's Piney Woods known as the Free State of Jones. Geographically and culturally isolated, they were largely populated by nonslaveholding subsistence farmers whose relationships with slaves and free blacks often generated a lively interracial subculture and even interracial family networks. Conscription policies favoring planters and manufacturers, together with food requisitions and taxes collected in kind by force, contributed to a sense of rich man's war, poor man's fight that made civilian-supported desertion and draft-evasion endemic. Defiance escalated to insurgency; Bynum quotes one unrepentant de facto Unionist: we fought [Confederates] like dogs, and we buried them like asses.... The collapse of Reconstruction left these dissenters marginalized by a race-based legal system and a lost cause mythology. Bynum highlights the solid South as a construction and even more successfully presents the importance of kinship, community, and place in sustaining resistance to oppression. 9 illus., 1 map.

“Mayshark, an experienced staff editor for the New York Times News Service, has written perhaps the first in-depth study of the major contributors to the culturally and cinematically aware, accessibly eccentric "post-pop cinema." Mayshark interprets the creative output of directors from Wes Anderson to David O. Russell to Sofia Coppola, among others, who deal so originally and truthfully with their characters' struggles for individuality and clarity. His study of Todd Haynes in particular, covering films such as &ISafe, Far from Heaven, and the controversial Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story, reveals a genuine understanding of the director's attempts to combine cinematic artistry with complex and often tragic characterizations. Mayshark illustrates that even as this period in American filmmaking creates new ways of storytelling, the seed of it all remains the difficult joy and madness of finding one's place in the world. This is a highly engaging and informative study of a sensibility more than a genre; recommended for all academic and public libraries.”–Library Journal
“While he considers the 10 American directors (and one screenwriter) discussed here all members of a "post-pop" or "post-post modernism" school, Mayshark is wary of bunching them together for the fact that their most uniting trait is actually their overt individualism. Nonetheless he finds ample similarities in the "chinstroking" and "anarchic" works of P.T. and Wes Anderson (not related), David O. Russell, Todd Haynes, and Charlie Kaufman with Spike Jonze and Michel Gondry, because they all tread the line between irony and sentiment and address questions of alienation and morality with a non- moralizing tone. The author offers analysis of this group's major films and of its major critics, and in the final chapter introduces three less prolific but promising American post-pop visionaries the directors of Fight Club, Lost in Translation, and Donnie Darko.”–Reference & Research Book News
Provides a deep look into the varied work and common bonds of a group of young American directors including Wes Anderson, P. T. Anderson, Sofia Coppola, Richard Kelly, Richard Linklater, and David O. Russell.

This book tells the history of nuclear age urban planning, civil defense, and continuity of government programs in one of the nation's most critical Cold War targets: Washington, D.C. Spanning the years 1940 to 1962, This Is Only a Test uses Washington's often conflicting identities--capital, city, and symbol--to explore the connections between the attempted dispersal of vital government offices to distant suburban sites, the District's Office of Civil Defense, and the creation of the secretive Federal Relocation Arc.

Measures to protect the federal government resulted in a widening gap between capital and city, while the failures of the city's local program symbolized federal ambivalence toward civil defense. This Is Only a Test shows how the Cold War affected Washington and its racially divided population.

Few institutions in the world are credited with initiating and confounding political change on the scale of the United States Supreme Court. The Court is uniquely positioned to enhance or inhibit political reform, enshrine or dismantle social inequalities, and expand or suppress individual rights. Yet despite claims of victory from judicial activists and complaints of undemocratic lawmaking from the Court's critics, numerous studies of the Court assert that it wields little real power. This book examines the nature of Supreme Court power by identifying conditions under which the Court is successful at altering the behavior of state and private actors. Employing a series of longitudinal studies that use quantitative measures of behavior outcomes across a wide range of issue areas, it develops and supports a new theory of Supreme Court power. Matthew E. K. Hall finds that the Court tends to exercise power successfully when lower courts can directly implement its rulings; however, when the Court must rely on non-court actors to implement its decisions, its success depends on the popularity of those decisions. Overall, this theory depicts the Court as a powerful institution, capable of exerting significant influence over social change.

This book is a cultural and intellectual history of anti-Catholicism in the period 1840-1870. The book will have two major themes: trans-nationalism and gender. Previous approaches to anti-Catholicism in the United States have adopted an exclusively national focus. This book breaks new ground by exploring the trans-Atlantic ties joining opponents of Catholicism in the United States and in France. The anticlerical works of major French writers such as Jules Michelet and Edgar Quinet flowed into the United States in the middle decades of the century. From the French perspective, the United States offered a model in combating the alleged ambitions of the Church. The literature and ideas which passed through this trans-Atlantic channel were overwhelmingly concerned with masculinity, femininity and domesticity. On both sides of the Atlantic, anti-Catholic literature was filled with images of priests or Jesuits craftily usurping the authority of fathers, of young girls tricked into entering convents and then subjected to merciless sexual and physical abuse, of families torn apart by the agents of the Church. Of course, the gender and domestic ideals underlying this opposition to Catholicism were not identical across the two societies. Nevertheless, gender and domesticity acted as a platform on which the trans-Atlantic case against Catholicism was built.

This latest volume in the definitive six-volume biography of Herbert Hoover tracks Hoover’s life and career from 1918 to 1928—a period defined largely by his role as United States Secretary of Commerce and leading directly to his election as the thirty-first President of the United States. It tells the story of how Hoover the engineering progressive turned relief and war manager developed a public philosophy for dealing with a wide array of problems. It also fits Hoover into the larger thought, action, and developmental patterns of the period, interweaving his family matters, business affairs, and other projects with the larger historical context.

The Texture of Contact is a landmark study of Iroquois and European communities and coexistence in eastern North America before the American Revolution. David L. Preston details the ways in which European and Iroquois settlers on the frontiers creatively adapted to each other s presence, weaving webs of mutually beneficial social, economic, and religious relationships that sustained the peace for most of the eighteenth century.

Drawing on a wealth of previously unexamined archival research, Preston describes everyday encounters between Europeans and Indians along the frontiers of the Iroquois Confederacy in the St. Lawrence, Mohawk, Susquehanna, and Ohio valleys. Homesteads, taverns, gristmills, churches, and markets were frequent sites of intercultural exchange and negotiation. Complex diplomatic and trading relationships developed as a result of European and Iroquois settlers bartering material goods. Innovative land-sharing arrangements included the common practice of Euroamerican farmers living as tenants of the Mohawks, sometimes for decades. This study reveals that the everyday lives of Indians and Europeans were far more complex and harmonious than past histories have suggested. Preston s nuanced comparisons between various settlements also reveal the reasons why peace endured in the Mohawk and St. Lawrence valleys while warfare erupted in the Susquehanna and Ohio valleys.

One of the most comprehensive studies of eighteenth-century Iroquois history, The Texture of Contact broadens our understanding of eastern North America s frontiers and the key role that the Iroquois played in shaping that world.

For more than a decade, the United States has mostly watched from the sidelines as Asian countries organized themselves into an alphabet soup of new multilateral organizations. As groups such as ASEAN Plus Three, from which Washington is excluded, become the locus of economic and financial integration, America's traditional "hub and spokes" approach to Asia —with the United States as the hub, bilateral alliances as the spokes, and multilateral institutions largely at the margins of American policy —has become unsustainable.
In this report, Evan A. Feigenbaum and Robert A. Manning review the relationship between pan-Asian and trans-Pacific institutions and suggest policy guidelines for a different U.S. approach to this new Asian landscape. A purposeful multilateralism that pools the efforts of those with the greatest capacity, the authors argue, could make Asia a more prosperous and secure region. And by leading with new ideas and vigorous multilateral economic engagement, the United States can help define new roles for itself in a changing Asia.

This unique collection of essays provides a re-evaluation of the term 'Atlantic,' by placing at the core of the debate on republicanism in the early modern age the link between continental Europe and America, rather than assuming British political culture as having been widely representative of Europe as a whole.

In the summer of 2008 the economic relationship that had developed between the United States and East Asia, and China in particular, stood on the precipice of collapse. The American government avoided a crisis by rescuing two hugely indebted American mortgage corporations, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Thompson explains the origins of the crisis, unravels the domestic politics of home ownership in the United States and analyses the consequences and implications of the crisis. She demonstrates the importance politics, both on the domestic and international front, has played in shaping our understanding of the financial crisis and considers the problems of economic interdependence more generally.

"Labor's War at Home" examines a critical period in American politics and labor history, beginning with the outbreak of war in Europe in 1939 through the wave of major industrial strikes that followed the war and accompanied the reconversion to a peacetime economy. Nelson Lichtenstein is concerned both with the internal organizations and social dynamics of the labor movement especially the Congress of Industrial Organizations and with the relationship between the CIO, as well as other bodies of organized labor, and the Roosevelt administration. He argues that tensions within the labor movement and within the ranks of American business profoundly affected government policy during the war and the nature of organized labor's political relations with Roosevelt and the Democratic Party. Moreover, the political arrangements worked out during the war established the foundations of social stability and labor politics that came to characterize the postwar world. Nelson Lichtenstein is Professor of History at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is the author of numerous books, including "Walter Reuther: The Most Dangerous Man in Detroit" and, most recently, "State of the Union: A Century of American Labor".

At the nation's founding, the fundamental principle underlying American government was liberty, and the nation's new government was designed to protect the rights of individuals. The American founders intended to design a government that would protect the rights of its citizens, and at that time the most serious threat to people's rights was government. Thus, the United States government was designed with a constitutionally limited scope to preserve the rights of individuals and limit the powers of government. The government's activities during two world wars and the Great Depression greatly increased its involvement in people's economic affairs, and by the time of Lyndon Johnson's Great Society, the transformation was complete. By the end of the twentieth century, the fundamental principle underlying American government had been transformed to democracy, and public policy was designed to further the will of the majority. The result has been a government that is larger and broader in scope. From Liberty to Democracy examines American political history using the framework of public choice theory to show how American government grew more democratic, and how this resulted in an increase in the size and scope of government. It should appeal to historians, political scientists, and economists who are interested in the evolution of American government but does not assume any specialized training and can be read by anyone interested in American political history. Randall G. Holcombe is DeVoe Moore Professor of Economics, Florida State University
