Essential resource for anyone teaching business students

I've found this book to be indispensible this year while teaching Business English. Deals extremely comprehensively with all aspects of the Language of Meetings. The book is divided into units such as Opinions, Agreeing,Clarifying

The units are separated into a kind of introduction to see what language the students already know (great for the TTT approach). It then gives lists of language used for each function. Great at showing "lexical chunks" of language.

Then there's a gapfill page to consolidate and help students learn and remember.

A 'mini-task' puts the language into practice with dialogue chains, or mini-roleplays with topic suggestions. The end of the units consist of collocation matching exercises.

Great to dip into for use in more general classes, or use more methodically and work through each unit with students who reguarly have to attend meetings.

Perhaps in too much detail - I'd say it's good for use with Upper Int students and above, but with a bit of cutting and pasting, can easily be adapted for lower level learners.

In this, his last book, Freud argues that Moses was an Egyptian nobleman and that the Jewish religion was in fact an Egyptian import to Palestine. Freud also writes that Moses was murdered in the wilderness, in a reenactment of the primal crime against the father. Lingering guilt for this crime, Freud says, is the reason Christians understand Jesus' death as sacrificial. "The 'redeemer' could be none other than the one chief culprit, the leader of the brother-band who had overpowered the father." Hence the basic difference between Judaism and Christianity: "Judaism had been a religion of the father, Christianity became a religion of the son." Freud's arguments are extremely imaginative, and his distinction between reality and fantasy, as always, is very loose. If only as a study of wrong-headedness, however, it's fascinating reading for those who want to explore the psychological impulses governing the historical relationship between Christians and Jews. --Michael Joseph Gross

The first few chapters are consistent in tone and style, and discuss basics of Hindu (or perhaps Theosophist) thought in very general terms, with lots of italics and small caps for emphasis. There is even a realistic description of a saddhu and a fishmarket in Benares, local color which you don't typically find in the YPS series. Hindu technical terms are used correctly (and spelled correctly).

"There is a huge amount of academic 19th century literature relating to sacred sexuality. However, there are not many books which cover this subject matter for the general reader: this book is one of the few. Goldberg approaches the culturally sensitive issue of the intersection of religion and sex frankly and in some depth.

That said, this work has a few problems which need to be kept in mind while reading it. There is not much in the way of apparatus aside from a bibliography: not even the Bible quotes are attributed. Goldberg also invents a number of descriptive passages, particularly in the second section. While these go a long way towards dimensionalizing this material, they include a number of purely speculative details which are not identified as such.

Perhaps the best part of this book is the discussion of the evolution of the attitude towards sexuality in Christianity. Goldberg also describes a number of little-known curious cults such as the Russian Skopzi, the mediaeval flagellants, and others. Long out of print, but available used, this book serves as a useful introduction to the subject and sheds light on some little known corners of the subject of sacred sexuality."
