The submarine was undoubtedly the most potent purely naval weapon of the twentieth century. In two world wars, enemy underwater campaigns were very nearly successful in thwarting Allied hopes of victory - indeed, annihilation of Japanese shipping by US Navy submarines is an indicator of what might have been.That the submarine was usually defeated is a hugely important story in naval history, yet this is the first book to treat the subject as a whole in a readable and accessible manner. It concerns individual heroism and devotion to duty, but also ingenuity, technical advances and originality of tactical thought. What developed was an endless battle between forces above and below the surface, where a successful innovation by one side eventually produces a counter-measure by the other in a lethal struggle for supremacy. Development was not a straight line: wrong ideas and assumptions led to defeat and disaster. So far, close and professional teamwork by scientists, engineers and commanders and crews of ASW aircraft, ships (and, recently, other submarines) have been able to defeat the threat of hostile raiders hiding in the depths of the world's oceans.

This book provides valuable insights into German corps and divisional command decisions on the Eastern Front. Each chapter was written by a different general, as part of the US Army's efforts to tap this resource for information shortly after the war.

Newton has retranslated these, offers corrections to the orignal translations (that apparently were done by Army officers with only a very basic command of the German language), and gets these manuscripts out of dusty archives and into publication.

Simply making these available to a wide audience is valuable. Newton goes further, however, by providing useful footnotes throughout the chapters.

I rate the book 4 stars instead of 5 because of the very large number of typos in the book. Most of these are quite jarring. For example, in one instance the word "be" is rendered as "e". I do not fault Newton necessarily (although he is ultimately responsible for these sorts of errors), but rather Schiffer Press which I do not think offers much, if any, support for authors in terms of editing and copy editing. I have several other books from Schiffer by other authors and there are similar problems. Schiffer has interesting books in its catalog, but it clearly is a "crank-em-out-and-they'll-buy-'em" press.

This book tells the story of these Soviet defensive systems, their design, construction, and combat history. With excellent illustrations, it describes the standard types of construction and the weapons they contained. The text is a model of clarity, which puts the complicated history into a coherent narrative, and the maps, while not numerous, are effective. The book closes with suggestions for places to visit remains of the Russian defenses. This is one of the best-written books in the series, and is highly recommended even to those unfamiliar with Soviet fortifications.

Yet this remarkable and sometimes comical story has often been recounted with little regard for the facts, most prominently in the popular film Five Fingers. Now, historian and former intelligence officer Richard Wires presents the first full and objective account of the Cicero spy episode, offering closure to past discrepancies and credible solutions to remaining mysteries. Copiously documented, The Cicero Spy Affair provides readers with the true chronology of events and places them in an international context. It is a story set in the hotbed of intrigue that was wartime Turkey, replete with a dramatic car chase, a series of colorful mistresses ever loyal to their lover the spy, and an old-school British ambassador whose documents are photographed at night as he plays the piano in the drawing room and/or slips into a sleeping pill-induced slumber. Despite the affair's amusing aspects, it is also a sobering tale in which there are no winners and from which there are serious lessons to be learned. Germany never made use of the highly sensitive British documents it obtained during this crucial four-month period of the war because the handling of the information was caught up in a bitter and wasteful personal rivalry between Ribbentrop and Schellenberg. It was sheer luck for the British that their war effort did not sustain any significant damage. For, while the book states definitively that security regarding the Allied invasion of Normandy was not breached in the Cicero affair, Germany did gain a potential advantage concerning campaigns in the Aegean and the Balkans. This embarrassed the British greatly, especially since Cicero walked away a free man. However, the greedy valet--the most highly paid spy in history at that time--did not achieve his goals, either; he discovered some years later that the British banknotes he insisted on as payment were counterfeited by the Germans as part of a larger counterfeiting project. Cicero died a desperate man, deeply in debt--a fitting anticlimax for an espionage episode resulting in neither bodily injury nor strategic impact, but in humiliation on all sides.

The battle around Falaise in Normandy during August 1944 saw the destruction of the German Seventh army; this title details the chain of events which led to the German retreat and the ensuing liberation of France. The British and American breakout battles had released motorised units to wage a more mobile war against the German static defensive tactics, and at Falaise, the armoured units of US Third Army encircled the German Seventh Army and squeezed them into an ever-smaller cauldron of chaos, crushed against the advancing British Second Army. The results were devastating: those troops able to escape the disaster fled, whilst those who remained were killed or captured and vast quantities of armour and equipment were lost.
