The book comes at a time when the most influential national media have focused attention on the subject of the literary canon. They have made it an issue not merely of academic but of general public concern, expressing strong opinions on the subject of what the American student should or should not read as essential or core texts. Is the literary canon simply a given of tradition and history, or is it, and must it be, constantly under construction? The question remains hotly contested to the present moment. Arnold Krupat argues that the literary expression of the indigenous peoples of the United States has claims on us to more than marginal attention. Demonstrating a firm grasp of both literary history and contemporary critical theory, he situates Indian literature, traditional and modern, in a variety of contexts and categories. His extensive knowledge of the history and current theory of ethnography recommends the book to anthropologists and folklorists as well as to students and teachers of literature, both canonical and noncanonical. This book purports to be a children's book, with large texts. However, the whole thing is done in black and white, the book is huge, and it goes into some moralistic arguments. For instance: don't you see how German Immigrants felt when, in the late thirties and forties, the government forced German newspapers to print an English copy of each edition, so as to prove the newspaper was not passing spy information? Well yes, that sucks, but if you are a culture that is segregating itself from the culture you have joined (refusing to learn the language, staying within your communities, etc.) AND THEN A WAR STARTS WITH YOUR COUNTRY OF ORIGIN, it is likely your culture will be looked at with suspect. That sucks, but if anyone was shocked, they shouldn't have been. This book lacks pictures and reads like a textbook. I feel like it was made purposely to supplement classroom material; however, I don't ever really remember doing a specific immigrant unit. I learned about Ellis island and the like but we didn't really get into the various groups who immigrated until high school, and this book is written for students that are much younger. I picked it up because I am German American, but I didn't particularly enjoy "woe is my German ancestry" approach the author took. I think this book is supposed to be an "easy read" for ages 8-12, but I wouldn't suggest it.

A broadly interdisciplinary study of the pervasive secrecy in America cultural, political, and religious discourse. The occult has traditionally been understood as the study of secrets of the practice of mysticism or magic. This book broadens our understanding of the occult by treating it as a rhetorical phenomenon tied to language and symbols and more central to American culture than is commonly assumed.
Joshua Gunn approaches the occult as an idiom, examining the ways in which acts of textual criticism and interpretation are occultic in nature, as evident in practices as diverse as academic scholarship, Freemasonry, and television production. Gunn probes, for instance, the ways in which jargon employed by various social and professional groups creates barriers and fosters secrecy. From the theory wars of cultural studies to the Satanic Panic that swept the national mass media in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Gunn shows how the paradox of a hidden, buried, or secret meaning that cannot be expressed in language appears time and time again in Western culture. These recurrent patterns, Gunn argues, arise from a generalized, popular anxiety about language and its limitations. Ultimately, Modern Occult Rhetoric demonstrates the indissoluble relationship between language, secrecy, and publicity, and the centrality of suspicion in our daily lives.

Of momentous significance for the Cheyenne as well as the army, this November 1876 encounter, coming exactly six months to the day after the Custer debacle at the Little Bighorn, was part of the Powder River Expedition waged by Brigadier General George Crook against the Indians. Vital to the larger context of the Great Sioux War, the attack on Morning Star's village encouraged the eventual surrender of Crazy Horse and his Sioux followers.
