David Bacon - The Children of NAFTA, Labor Wars on the U.S.-Mexico Border (2004).jpg

Food, televisions, computer equipment, plumbing supplies, clothing. Much of the material foundation of our everyday lives is produced along the U.S./Mexico border in a world largely hidden from our view. Based on gripping firsthand accounts, this book investigates the impact of the North American Free Trade Agreement on those who labor in the agricultural fields and maquiladora factories on the border. Journalist David Bacon paints a powerful portrait of poverty, repression, and struggle, offering a devastating critique of NAFTA in the most pointed and in-depth examination of border workers published to date. Unlike journalists who have made brief excursions into strawberry fields and maquiladoras, Bacon has more than a decade's experience reporting on the ground at the border, and he has developed sustained relationships with scores of workers and organizers who have entrusted him with their stories. He describes harsh conditions of child labor in the Mexicali Valley, the deplorable housing outside factories in cities such as Tijuana, and corporate retaliation faced by union organizers. He finds that, despite the promises of its backers, NAFTA has locked in a harsh neoliberal economic policy that has swept away laws and protections that Mexican workers had established over decades. More than a showcase for NAFTA's victims, this book traces the emergence of a new social consciousness, telling how workers in Mexico, the United States, and Canada are now beginning to join together in a powerful new strategy of cross-border organizing as they search for economic and social justice.

Dilip Das - Two Faces of Globalization, Munificent and Malevolent (2008).jpg

Like the ancient Roman god Janus, globalization has two faces, one benign and the other malign. In this comprehensive and authoritative book, Dilip K. Das fills a gap in the literature by examining both aspects of the contemporary phase of economic globalization.

Because globalization has had both welfare-enhancing, propitious consequences as well as detrimental ones, it has become an acutely contentious subject matter among both scholarly and public policy-making communities. Contemporary globalization cannot be studied without a balanced treatment of both facets. The author provides precisely that, covering large thematic areas of the global economy and globalization through the channels of trade, financial flows, attention to newly emerging trends as well as historical perspective.

Neither overly technical nor highly model-oriented, this accessible book will be of great interest to scholars, students and other readers interested in a broad and balanced view of globalization.

Ernie López - To Alcatraz, Death Row, and Back, Me mories of an East LA Outlaw (2005).jpg

When Ernie López was a boy selling newspapers in Depression-era Los Angeles, his father beat him when he failed to bring home the expected eighty to ninety cents a day. When the beatings became unbearable, he took to petty stealing to make up the difference. As his thefts succeeded, Ernie's sense of necessity got tangled up with ambition and adventure. At thirteen, a joyride in a stolen car led to a sentence in California's harshest juvenile reformatory. The system's failure to show any mercy soon propelled López into a cycle of crime and incarceration that resulted in his spending decades in some of America's most notorious prisons, including four and a half years on death row for a murder López insists he did not commit. To Alcatraz, Death Row, and Back is the personal life story of a man who refused to be broken by either an abusive father or an equally abusive criminal justice system. While López freely admits that "I've been no angel," his insider's account of daily life in Alcatraz and San Quentin graphically reveals the violence, arbitrary infliction of excessive punishment, and unending monotony that give rise to gang cultures within the prisons and practically insure that parolees will commit far worse crimes when they return to the streets. Rafael Pérez-Torres discusses how Ernie López's experiences typify the harsher treatment that ethnic and minority suspects often receive in the American criminal justice system, as well as how they reveal the indomitable resilience of Chicanos/as and their culture. As Pérez-Torres concludes, "López's story presents us with the voice of one who—though subjected to a system meant to destroy his soul—not only endured but survived, and in surviving prevailed.

01 - USA1 - James R. Barth - The Rise and Fall of the US Mortgage ... A Comprehensive Analysis of the Market Meltdown 2009.jpg

The mortgage meltdown: what went wrong and how do we fix it?
Owning a home can bestow a sense of security and independence. But today, in a cruel twist, many Americans now regard their homes as a source of worry and dashed expectations. How did everything go haywire? And what can we do about it now?
In The Rise and Fall of the U.S. Mortgage and Credit Markets, renowned finance expert James Barth offers a comprehensive examination of the mortgage meltdown. Together with a team of economists at the Milken Institute, he explores the shock waves that have rippled through the entire financial sector and the real economy. Deploying an incredibly detailed and extensive set of data, the book offers in-depth analysis of the mortgage meltdown and the resulting worldwide financial crisis. This authoritative volume explores what went wrong in every critical area, including securitization, loan origination practices, regulation and supervision, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, leverage and accounting practices, and of course, the rating agencies. The authors explain the steps the government has taken to address the crisis thus far, arguing that we have yet to address the larger issues.
* Offers a comprehensive examination of the mortgage market meltdown and its reverberations throughout the financial sector and the real economy
* Explores several important issues that policymakers must address in any future reshaping of financial market regulations
* Addresses how we can begin to move forward and prevent similar crises from shaking the foundations of our financial system
The Rise and Fall of the U.S. Mortgage and Credit Markets analyzes the factors that should drive reform and explores the issues that policymakers must confront in any future reshaping of financial market regulations.

John J. Mearsheimer & Stephen M. Walt - The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy (2007).jpg

The Israel Lobby,” by John J. Mearsheimer of the University of Chicago and Stephen M. Walt of Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, was one of the most controversial articles in recent memory. Originally published in the London Review of Books in March 2006, it provoked both howls of outrage and cheers of gratitude for challenging what had been a taboo issue in America: the impact of the Israel lobby on U.S. foreign policy. Now in a work of major importance, Mearsheimer and Walt deepen and expand their argument and confront recent developments in Lebanon and Iran. They describe the remarkable level of material and diplomatic support that the United States provides to Israel and argues that this support cannot be fully explained on either strategic or moral grounds. This exceptional relationship is due largely to the political influence of a loose coalition of individuals and organizations that actively work to shape U.S. foreign policy in a pro-Israel direction. Mearsheimer and Walt provocatively contend that the lobby has a far-reaching impact on America’s posture throughout the Middle East—in Iraq, Iran, Lebanon, and toward the Israeli-Palestinian conflict—and the policies it has encouraged are in neither America’s national interest nor Israel’s long-term interest. The lobby’s influence also affects America’s relationship with important allies and increases dangers that all states face from global jihadist terror. Writing in The New York Review of Books, Michael Massing declared, “Not since Foreign Affairs magazine published Samuel Huntington’s ‘The Clash of Civilizations?’ in 1993 has an academic essay detonated with such force.” The publication of The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy is certain to widen the debate and to be one of the most talked-about books of the year.

June Grem - The money manipulators (1971).jpeg

It is a pleasure to write the introduction to The Money Manipulators, a penetrating, courageous book, written by June Grem. Soon it will become a valuable item on library shelves throughout the country in reference to the subjects of money, money quantity, money control, the Federal Reserve Bank System, shadowy international money operations, the subversion emanating from some large tax-free foundations, the United Nations' cruel hoax, millionaire socialists with political stooges placed in high government posts, and our ponderous, inequitable income tax structure. All of these are surrounded by vast deceit at great cost to unsuspecting and victimized Americans. Hence, it is appropriate to recall the 14th chapter, 8th verse of First Corinthians, which observes : "For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle ?" Certainly, for the last three hundred years, many leading "trumpets in our Western world have been emitting dubious and uncertain sounds. Why ? To confuse many of us by creating a misleading image in history and in the press, to serve their long-range objectives. That objective is sought by a few individuals to acquire most of the world's wealth and power with great suffering by the many ! Having been successful for a long time in this nefarious operation conducted against mankind, that pattern of success must, of course, be well concealed from the people. This step has been carried out by acquiring control of the press, radio, television, numerous publications, in fact, nearly all the media of communication, so as to mislead and hide their sinister intent. Often "these few" pose, hypocritically, as generous philanthropists, presidential advisers, social uplifters, civil righters, and vocal champions of the downtrodden masses ! But, all the while, they are covertly attempting to further downtread the same uninformed masses. They aim for you to believe that black is white, that right is wrong, that all "change" must be constructive !--accomplished by their dutiful puppets in the press ! Recall the apt expression : "Whose bread I eat, his song I sing !" Without deceitful image-making, supported by the media of communication, the planners' game, or long-range conspiracy, would have been disclosed long ago, and terminated ! When that does happen, real progress will promptly ensue for the great benefit of all of us. To introduce this fine book is exhilarating--to be afforded an opportunity to applaud such a valuable work representing, as it does, a real contribution to truth and to well-rounded education, not to the meandering indoctrination technique which we have hovering all about us, serving its ugly purpose.

Osprey - New Vanguard 147 - Mark Lardas - American Light and Medium Frigates 1794-1836 (2006).jpg

The ‘Original Six’ frigates were commissioned by the new-born US Navy at a staggering cost of nearly $700,000. Designed to be light and fast, these warships enabled America to project its power across the globe. Among the ships Mark Lardas examines is USS Constellation: the first ship to be commissioned by the United States Navy. Alongside stirring accounts of engagements during the Barbary Wars, the author explores the design and development of these frigates, explaining the shortcomings that led to their replacement by larger, heavier 44-gun models by 1800. Packed with contemporary illustrations of US frigates and their British and French rivals, this book follows the escalation of the naval ‘arms race’ during the 18th century.

Review:

"The full history and design of these interesting ships is covered in this volume. It is superbly illustrated by period works as well as by the artists chosen by Osprey for this title. It is an excellent book on a most interesting subject and one that I am positive you will find to be of interest. One that will be pulled from the shelves time after time and one I can highly recommend to you."

Sam A. Maddra - Hostiles, The Lakota Ghost Dance A nd Buffalo Bill's Wild West (2006).jpeg

On March 30, 1891--less than four months after the military suppression of the Lakota Ghost Dance at Wounded Knee, South Dakota--twenty-three Lakota Sioux imprisoned at Fort Sheridan, Illinois, were released into the custody of William F. Cody. "Buffalo Bill," as Cody was known, then hired the prisoners as performers. Labeled "hostiles" by the federal government, the Lakotas would learn to play hostiles before British audiences in 1891-92 as part of the Wild West's second tour of Britain.
In Hostiles? Sam A. Maddra relates an ironic tale of Indian accommodation--and preservation of the Ghost Dance, which the Lakotas believed was a principled, restorative religion. To the U.S. Army, their religion was a rebellion to be suppressed. To the Indians, it offered hope in a time of great transition. To Cody, it became a means to attract British audiences. With these Lakotas, the showman could offer dramatic reenactments of the army's conquest, starring none other than the very "hostile Indians" who had staged the recent "uprising" in South Dakota.
Cody's narrative of conquest is generally rejected, but few people even today question whether the Lakotas had twisted the original Ghost Dance into a violent resistance movement. Drawing on sources previous historians have overlooked, Maddra shows the fallacy of this view. Appended to this volume are five of Short Bull's narratives, including a new translation by Raymond J. DeMallie of a 1915 interview.

Cecilia Tichi - Electronic Hearth, Creating an Ame rican Television Culture (1992).jpg

We all talk about the "tube" or "box," as if television were simply another appliance like the refrigerator or toaster oven. But Cecilia Tichi argues that TV is actually an environment--a pervasive screen-world that saturates almost every aspect of modern life. In Electronic Hearth, she looks at how that environment evolved, and how it, in turn, has shaped the American experience.Tichi explores almost fifty years of writing about television--in novels, cartoons, journalism, advertising, and critical books and articles--to define the role of television in the American consciousness. She examines early TV advertising to show how the industry tried to position the new device as not just a gadget but a prestigious new piece of furniture, a highly prized addition to the home. The television set, she writes, has emerged as a new electronic hearth--the center of family activity. John Updike described this "primitive appeal of the hearth" in Roger's Version: "Television is--its irresistable charm--a fire. Entering an empty room, we turn it on, and a talking face flares into being." Sitting in front of the TV, Americans exist in a safety zone, free from the hostility and violence of the outside world. She also discusses long-standing suspicions of TV viewing: its often solitary, almost autoerotic character, its supposed numbing of the minds and imagination of children, and assertions that watching television drugs the minds of Americans. Television has been seen as treacherous territory for public figures, from generals to presidents, where satire and broadcast journalism often deflate their authority. And the print culture of journalism and book publishing has waged a decades-long war of survival against it--only to see new TV generations embrace both the box and the book as a part of their cultural world. In today's culture, she writes, we have become "teleconscious"--seeing, for example, real life being certified through television ("as seen on TV"), and television constantly ratified through its universal presence in art, movies, music, comic strips, fabric prints, and even references to TV on TV.

Michael Hirsh - At War with Ourselves, Why America Is Squandering Its Chance to Build a Better World (2004).jpg

01 - USA1 - Michael Hirsh - At War with Ourselves, Why America Is ...Is Squandering Its Chance to Build a Better World 2004.jpg

From Publishers Weekly
America's profound ambivalence toward stewardship of the international system will be the "permanent quagmire" of the 21st century, argues Hirsh (a senior editor at Newsweek, which excerpted this book in its May 12 issue) in his timely contribution to recent literature on the U.S. role in the post-Cold War world. While America "the "oberpower" dominates the globe by exerting a combination of ideological influence and military and economic power, Hirsh says that successive administrations have failed to grasp the nation's historic mandate as orchestrator of the new world order. Having been a foreign correspondent from Kosovo to Afghanistan, Hirsh reports on the discordant policies of Clinton and Bush, while providing the lay reader with an overview of the conflicts and personalities that have shaped a lackluster U.S. foreign policy over the past decade. Unconventional threats like terrorism and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction render the U.S. vulnerable and necessitate, in the author's view, a multilateral approach. In Hirsh's perfect world, Clinton's Wilsonian idealism-marked by economic integration, democratization and multilateral cooperation-would coalesce with Bush's unilateralist view of overwhelming military power to forge a strong and principled American leadership. In the meantime, America must confront the pitfalls of "ideological blowback" caused by the spotty application of its own ideals abroad. Repairing the disconnect in U.S. foreign policy that backs autocratic regimes in places like the Middle East while failing to press democracy in the area, offers, Hirsh says, a good place to start.

From Booklist
How is it that the same country that gave the world Woodrow Wilson's crusade for a League of Nations to guarantee peace has now also given us George Bush's dismissal of the United Nations as an irrelevance to the waging of war? A longtime diplomatic correspondent, Hirsch has watched closely as America has stumbled into being the only superpower to survive the cold war. The stumbling was apparent during the Clinton administration--which freely deployed the Wilsonian rhetoric of international idealism but botched its handling of the Kosovo crisis and recoiled from the horrors of Rwanda. But Hirsch expresses even deeper skepticism about the go-it-alone assertiveness of Bush conservatives. Our real national interest, Hirsch argues, lies in leading--not abandoning--the international community that the U.S. helped bring into existence. Only a full commitment to international organizations can limit the "ideological blowback" America has incubated by preaching self-determination and free enterprise while denying the claims of Third World separatists. An ideal primer for general readers trying to fathom the promise and peril of global politics. Bryce Christensen

Shelley Streeby - American Sensations, Class, Empi re, and the Production of Popular Culture (2002).jpg

American Sensations is a brilliant book, useful to students, professors and other readers interested in the history of popular culture and US imperialism. Well written and researched, Streeby's analysis of popular culture regarding the US/Mexican War--a conflict often overlooked in accounts of US cultural history--is stunning. This is a real classic destined to be read for years to come by students and scholars in American Studies, Latin American Studies, and Chicana/o Studies. And given current debates over US imperialism in the Middle East, American Sensations should be required reading for anyone interested in how the past continues to shape our present moment.

Charles Darrah, James Freeeman, J.A. English-Lueck - Busier Than Ever!, Why American Families Can't Slow Down (2007).jpg

01 - USA1 - Charles Darrah, James Freeeman, J.A. English-Lueck - B... Than Ever, Why American Families Cant Slow Down 2007.jpg

Busyness defines the lives of most Americans. For some, the focus of busyness is family. For others, it is career or social activities. Sometimes busyness results from a big event, like the catastrophic illness of a family member, but much of it builds from many seemingly inconsequential demands that collectively become overwhelming. We search for the best airline prices on the Internet, are "partners" with teachers in our children's education, and employ a battery of devices that promise to save labor if only we can learn how to use them.

Busier Than Ever! follows the daily activities of fourteen American families. It explores why they are busy and what the consequences are for their lives. Busyness is not just a matter of personal time management, but of the activities we participate in and how each of us creates "the good life." While numerous books deal with efficiency and the difficulties of balancing work and family, Busier Than Ever! offers a fresh approach. Busyness is not a "problem" to be solved--it is who we are as Americans and it's redefining American families.

"Overscheduled families with mission statements. Parents on the run. Kids too busy for childhood. Work invades family life, and vice versa. Blurred boundaries and compartmentalized behavior. How do families create and manage the myriad obligations of middle-class life in 21st century America? Based on extended and detailed ethnographic fieldwork, with intriguing and appealing case studies, the authors offer an unique analysis of contemporary life. No one seeking to understand the American middle class today can afford to miss this highly readable and revealing book."
--Conrad Kottak, University of Michigan

"We all know--and experience--that Americans are busier than ever, but what does that busyness actually entail, day to day, family to family? A fascinating examination of everyday life, this book offers a detailed picture of what constitutes busyness in American families as they cope with a risk society and manage the consequences of option overload. While showing that each family is unique, the authors also uncover patterns that help us understand family life in America today."
--Deborah Tannen, author of You're Wearing THAT? Understanding Mothers and Daughters in Conversation

"The authors have discovered a remarkable paradox. In their devotion to family, parents often express a desire for efficiency, control, productivity--a `new instrumentalism' many of us associate with work. This is a timely look in the mirror of dual-income middle class America."
--Arlie Hochschild, author of The Time Bind: When Work Becomes Home and Home Becomes Work

David Harvey - A Brief History of Neoliberalism (2 007).jpg

Neoliberalism--the doctrine that market exchange is an ethic in itself, capable of acting as a guide for all human action--has become dominant in both thought and practice throughout much of the world since 1970 or so. Writing for a wide audience, David Harvey, author of The New Imperialism and The Condition of Postmodernity, here tells the political-economic story of where neoliberalization came from and how it proliferated on the world stage. Through critical engagement with this history, he constructs a framework, not only for analyzing the political and economic dangers that now surround us, but also for assessing the prospects for the more socially just alternatives being advocated by many oppositional movements.
