Laurie Garrett - Betrayal of Trust, The Collapse o f Global Public Health (2001).jpg

This is a study of a full-blown global health crisis in the making. Laurie Garrett takes readers around the world to reveal how a series of potential and present public health catastrophies marks the death of public health and taken together form a portrait of real global disaster in the making. She argues that public health is a bond between a government and its people and if either side betrays that trust the system collapses like a house of cards. The book also aims to illustrate how, since 1980, this trust has frayed and our global public health system been systematically destroyed. It contends that, with globalization, no person is safe from antibiotic resistant superbugs, epidemic or biowar. Garrett takes the reader to India, where an outbreak of bubonic plague created international hysteria; to Zaire where the deadly ebola virus broke out in a filthy and completely unequipped hospital, and to the 15 states of the former Soviet Union have seen the collapse in their public health system. She also explores the increasingly chaotic, ungoverned world of biological terrorism.

Peter Stearns - Consumerism in World History, The Global Transformation of Desire (2006).jpg

The desire to acquire luxury goods and leisure services is a basic force in modern life. Consumerism in World History explores both the historical origins and world-wide appeal of this relatively modern phenomenon. By relating consumerism to other issues in world history, this book forces reassessment of our understanding of both consumerism and global history. This second edition of Consumerism in World History draws on recent research of the consumer experience in the West and Japan, while also examining societies less renowned for consumerism, such as Africa. Ever chapter has been updated and new features include:
· A new chapter on Latin America
· Russian and Chinese developments since the 1990s
· the changes involved in trying to bolster consumerism as a response to recent international threats
· examples of consumerist syncretism, as in efforts to blend beauty contests with traditional culture in Kerala.
With updated suggested reading, the second edition of Consumerism in World History is essential reading for all students of world history.

Squadron - Armor Specials 6063 - Kenneth Conboy - War in Laos 1954-1975 (1994).jpg

The size of Oregon and the shape of Italy, Laos is landlocked in the north-central portion of mainland Southeast Asia. It is surrounded by five more populous neighbors: China to the north. Vietnam to the east. Cambodia and Thailand to the south and Burma to the west. The northern half of the country is covered in towering hill masses and slate-black limestone karst spires. In the northeast, the mountains give way to the "Plaine Des Jarres," known commonly as the PDJ, a diamond-shaped patch of dairy land covered with giant stone burial urns dating back thousands of years.
The southern half of the country runs in a narrow panhandle, which empties onto the Bolovens Plateau. This area was covered earlier this century by French coffee plantations and vacation villas. Down the eastern edge of the panhandle arc the Annamite Corilleras. a towering mountain range that covers most of the 1.323 mile border with Vietnam. On the western edge and forming a common border with Thailand is the Mekong River.
The climate of Laos roughly divides the year in half. Beginning in late May are five months of heavy tropical rains. Five more months, beginning in December, have high temperatures and little rain. A short spring and fall connect these rainy and dry seasons.
During the Second Indochina War, Laos was home to approximately three million persons. Of these, nearly half were lowland Laotians from the Tai linguistic group that migrated from southern China beginning in the Thirteenth Century. The vast majority of these lowlanders are peasant farmers and Buddhists.

Robert Perrucci - America at Risk, The Crisis of H ope, Trust, and Caring (2009).jpg

In America at Risk: The Crisis of Hope, Trust, and Caring, Robert Perrucci and Carolyn C. Perrucci identify the broad economic and technological changes that have led to the loss of high wage jobs, declining opportunity, and increased income and wealth inequality. Taking data from a thirty-year period, Perrucci and Perrucci apply a critical sociological lens to view the dominant economic, political, and cultural institutions that cause the main social problems affecting Americans.

01 - USA1 - Steven Salaita - The Uncultured Wars, Arabs, Muslims a...s and the Poverty of Liberal Thought - New Essays 2008.jpg

This book is a powerful indictment of dominant American liberal-left discourse. Through twelve stylish essays, Steven Salaita returns again and again to his core themes of anti-Arab racism and Islamophobia and the inadequacy of critical thought among the "chattering classes," showing how racism continues to exist in the places where we would least expect it. By looking at topics as diverse as "Is Jackass Justifiable?," "Open Mindedness on Independence Day" and "Ambition, Terrorism and Empathy," Salaita explores why Arabs are marginalized, and who seeks to benefit from this. He goes on to make the case that Arabs and Muslims urgently need to be included in the conversations that people have about American geopolitics. Part of a long tradition of politically engaged writing, and a trailblazer in the emerging genre of Arab-American writing, this book is eminently readable and relevant to our times.

Peter Eric Hendrickson - Cracking the Code, The Fa scinating Truth About Taxation In America (2003).jpg

(From the back cover) For the 64 years of its existence, the U. S. Internal Revenue Code has been ridiculed, feared and despised by virtually everyone. And why not? As presented by the Internal Revenue Service, the code appears illogical, inconsistent and incomprehensible. As presented, the code defies practically the entire Bill of Rights: requiring citizens to testify against themselves, allowing searches and seizures without warrants, levying fines and penalties without trials and imposing a tax on the basic right to earn a living. As presented, the IRC would appear to turn everything we all thought we had learned in grade school English and Civics on its head. Is it possible that we all just misunderstood those simple lessons? Maybe. But researcher, analyst and scholar Peter E. Hendrickson believes that after Cracking the Code, youll agree that what has been misunderstood is the 3,413,780 word monstrosity itself-and how, and to whom, it applies. Hendrickson delves deep into the history, statutes and case law behind the Code to reveal its startling and liberating secrets; and unless you live in a cave, you need to know what he has uncovered. Once you've finished Cracking the Code, the tax laws will never mean the same thing to you, or your bank account, again!

Sarah Barringer Gordon - The Mormon Question, Poly gamy and Constitutional Conflict in Nineteenth-Cen tury America (2002).jpg

01 - USA1 - Sarah Barringer Gordon - The Mormon Question, Polygamy...titutional Conflict in Nineteenth-Century America 2002.jpg

From the Mormon Church's public announcement of its sanction of polygamy in 1852 until its formal decision to abandon the practice in 1890, people on both sides of the "Mormon question" debated central questions of constitutional law. Did principles of religious freedom and local self-government protect Mormons' claim to a distinct, religiously based legal order? Or was polygamy, as its opponents claimed, a new form of slavery--this time for white women in Utah? And did constitutional principles dictate that democracy and true liberty were founded on separation of church and state?
As Sarah Barringer Gordon shows, the answers to these questions finally yielded an apparent victory for antipolygamists in the late nineteenth century, but only after decades of argument, litigation, and open conflict. Victory came at a price; as attention and national resources poured into Utah in the late 1870s and 1880s, antipolygamists turned more and more to coercion and punishment in the name of freedom. They also left a legacy in constitutional law and political theory that still governs our treatment of religious life: Americans are free to believe, but they may well not be free to act on their beliefs.

Shane Mountjoy - Causes of the Civil War, The Diff erences Between the North and South (2009).jpg

In 1861, Americans became engaged in a bloody civil war in which more than 600,000 Americans lost their lives. The conflict began after several states withdrew from the Union. "Causes of the Civil War: The Differences Between the North and South" examines the sectional rivalries that surfaced in the early 19th century and intensified in the decades leading up to the war. Two distinct American societies had developed: one industrialized, urban, and relying upon free labor, and the other rural, agrarian, and built upon slave labor. As the United States expanded its territory westward, the differences in the two sections fueled the debate over slavery and its use. In the 1840s and 1850s, tensions escalated, resulting in the secession of the Southern states and the declaration of war between the Union and the Confederates.

Stefan Szymanski, Andrew Zimbalist - National Past ime, How Americans Play Baseball and the Rest of t he World Plays Soccer (2005).jpg

01 - USA1 - Stefan Szymanski, Andrew Zimbalist - National Pastime,... Baseball and the Rest of the World Plays Soccer 2005.jpg

National cultures are built around national pastimes. How we play helps define who we think we are. This is the story of two great sports—America's game, and the world's game. Baseball is America's game, a national obsession that remains largely North American, even though it bills its championship as the World Series. Soccer is the world's game, a sport over which no nation can claim ownership. Its World Cup is truly international and the ultimate yardstick of national self-esteem. National Pastime is the first in-depth cross-cultural comparison of these sporting passions and the mega-businesses they have become. In National Pastime, Stefan Szymanski and Andrew Zimbalist examine how organizational structures have made Major League Baseball a profitable business (notwithstanding common claims made by the owners) while soccer leagues around the world struggle to break even. They weave a rich variety of stories, anecdotes, and photos into their account of how these games became businesses, and how these businesses have adapted to the demands of fans. The authors show how early administrators of baseball and soccer leagues were influenced by the parallel developments of each sport and, in particular, how the concept of the league was invented by American baseball and transplanted first to English soccer, and then to the rest of the world.
In their final chapter, the authors discuss the lessons that baseball and soccer can learn from each other today. In some cases, they argue for radical restructuring, and they offer a blueprint for reform. Szymanski and Zimbalist show how a careful understanding of one sport can provide useful insights into the specific challenges facing the other. This engaging and readable book will entertain history buffs and sports fans alike, while providing participants and analysts with important insights. Even the most knowledgeable fans will learn a great deal about why their beloved sport developed along certain lines, and how it could be improved. Some fans may even discover that what they've been missing out on across the Atlantic—as the authors note, seeing the world through someone else's eyes can be instructive and rewarding… not to mention fun.

Hilton McCann - Offshore Finance (2006).jpg

It is estimated that up to sixty percent of the world's money may be located offshore, where half of all financial transactions are said to take place; however, there is a perception that secrecy about offshore is encouraged to obfuscate tax evasion and money laundering. McCann provides a detailed analysis of the global offshore environment, outlining the extent of the information available and how that information might be used in assessing the quality of individual jurisdictions, as well as examining whether some of the perceptions about 'offshore' are valid. He analyses the ongoing work of the Financial Stability Forum, the Financial Action Task Force, the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development. The book also offers some suggestions as to what the future might hold for offshore finance.

Michael Eric Dyson - Making Malcolm, The Myth and Meaning of Malcolm X (1996).jpg

Malcolm X's cultural rebirth his improbable second coming brims with irony. The nineties are marked by intense and often angry debates about racial authenticity and "selling out," and the participants in these debates from politicians to filmmakers to rap artists often draw on Malcolm's scorching rebukes to such moves. Meanwhile, Malcolm's "X" is marketed in countless business endeavors and is stylishly branded on baseball hats and T-shirts sported by every age, race, and gender. But this rampant commercialization is only a small part of Malcolm's remarkable renaissance. One of the century's most complex black leaders, he is currently blazing a new path across contemporary popular culture, and has even seared the edges of an academy that once froze him out. Thirty years after his assassination, what is it about his life and words that speaks so powerfully to so many? In Making Malcolm, Michael Eric Dyson probes the myths and meanings of Malcolm X for our time. From Spike Lee's film biography to Eugene Wolfenstein's psychobiographical study, from hip-hop culture to gender and racial politics, Dyson cuts a critical swathe through both the idolization and the vicious caricatures that have undermined appreciation of Malcolm's greatest accomplishments. The book's first section offers a boldly original and penetrating analysis of the major trends in interpreting Malcolm's legacy since his death, and the fiercely competing interests and ideologies that have shaped these trends. From mainstream books to writings published by the independent black press, Dyson identifies and examines the different "Malcolms" who have emerged in popular and academic investigations of his life and career. With impassioned and compelling force, Dyson argues that Malcolm was too formidable a historic figure the movements he led too variable and contradictory, the passion and intelligence he summoned too extraordinary and disconcerting to be viewed through any narrow cultural prism.

Montrew Dunham - Mahalia Jackson, Gospel Singer a nd Civil Rights Champion (2003).jpg

Mahalia Jackson grew up in poverty on the levees of New Orleans, hunting alligators along the Mississippi River for food and gathering driftwood for fuel with her brother Peter. But every Sunday, when her father preached at the Baptist Church, young Mahalia sang proudly in the choirâ the youngest member at age 5! Lively illustrations and engaging text pull young readers into the world in which Mahalia Jackson grew up. Whether constructing her dollâs braid from blades of grass, stuffing a cornhusk mattress, or adjusting to life in her Aunt Dukeâs home after her mother died, young Mahalia displayed the persistence and courage that foreshadowed the civil rights champion and world-famous gospel singer she would become. Working as a maid and a laundress, she always found the time for her passion—singing her special brand of music known as gospel in churches. She met the challenge of being black in what was largely a white entertainment world, overcoming poverty and prejudice and pioneering the way for all aspiring African Americans who succeeded her. Singing for royalty, presidents, and working closely with her friend Martin Luther King, Haley never forgot her early days on the levee and she found special joy encouraging young African-Americans to follow their ambitions.

Paul Kengor - The Crusader, Ronald Reagan and the Fall of Communism (2006).jpg

Based on extraordinary research: a major reassessment of Ronald Reagan's lifelong crusade to dismantle the Soviet Empire–including shocking revelations about the liberal American politician who tried to collude with USSR to counter Reagan's efforts

Paul Kengor's God and Ronald Reagan made presidential historian Paul Kengor's name as one of the premier chroniclers of the life and career of the 40th president. Now, with The Crusader, Kengor returns with the one book about Reagan that has not been written: The story of his lifelong crusade against communism, and of his dogged–and ultimately triumphant–effort to overthrow the Soviet Union.

Drawing upon reams of newly declassified presidential papers, as well as untapped Soviet media archives and new interviews with key players, Kengor traces Reagan's efforts to target the Soviet Union from his days as governor of California to the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of what he famously dubbed the "Evil Empire." The result is a major revision and enhancement of what historians are only beginning to realize: That Reagan not only wished for the collapse of communism, but had a deep and specific understanding of what it would take––and effected dozens of policy shifts that brought the USSR to its heels within a decade of his presidency.

The Crusader makes use of key sources from behind the Iron Curtain, including one key memo that implicates a major American liberal politician–still in office today–in a scheme to enlist Soviet premier Yuri Andropov to help defeat Reagan's 1984 reelection bid. Such new finds make The Crusader not just a work of extraordinary history, but a work of explosive revelation that will be debated as hotly in 2006 as Reagan's policies were in the 1980s.

01 - USA1 - John W. Schilling - Undercover, How I Went from Compan... Exposed the Worst Healthcare Fraud in US History 2008.jpg

When John Schilling, an unassuming mid-level accountant, went to work for the Columbia Hospital Corporation, he never expected to become the catalyst for the series of "whistleblower" cases that ripped through the healthcare industry in the late 1990s. But when he unwittingly discovered that the company was siphoning billions of dollars away from Medicare and stealing from American taxpayers, he was faced with a choice: Speak up for what he believed to be right, or remain silent. Undercover tells the story of Schilling's harrowing journey from ordinary citizen to federal informant. The book recounts how Schilling allied himself with the FBI and the Justice Department and--unable to confide in friends or family--journeyed into an undercover world in which he carried a wire and mapped out offices for secret government raids. Suspenseful and provocative, Undercover chronicles Schilling's nine-year ordeal that eventually led to the resignation of high-level executives and forced Columbia to return $1.7 billion dollars to the federal government. A compelling account of one man's decision to risk everything for the greater good, this book reveals the personal side of a thankless role that resulted, ultimately, in justice.

01 - USA1 - Serge Matulich, David M. Currie - Handbook of Frauds, ..., and Swindles, Failures of Ethics in Leadership 2008.jpg

It has been said that scammers and swindlers often display characteristics commonly attributed to good leadership. These include setting a vision, communicating it clearly, and motivating others to follow their lead. But when these skills are used by unconscionable people to satisfy greed, how can the average person recognize that foul play is afoot?
Providing a unique account of frauds throughout modern history, Handbook of Frauds, Scams, and Swindles: Failures of Ethics in Leadership compiles narratives from around the world, including a number of highly-publicized cases. Leading financial and investigative experts have authored the individual chapters, yet the book maintains a reader-friendly style.
The result is a text that is highly engaging and most importantly, provides regulators and investigators with an understanding of the motivations and behavior common to the individuals behind these life-damaging crimes.
The book includes a wealth of stories, including famous cases such as Ponzi, ZZZZ Best, Enron, Parmalat, and Vivendi, along with lesser-known scandals involving both corporations and individuals. There is also a section on frauds perpetrated for motives other than financial rewards, including instances when the government performed experiments on humans without their knowledge or consent, as well as stories on frauds involving science and religion.

Randy J. Nelson - Biology of Aggression (2005).jpg

Unchecked aggression and violence take a significant toll on society. Even if we manage to avoid being the direct victim of a violent act, the effects of aggression and violence reach us all: We hear about the mauling of a woman by an aggressive dog, our children are bullied at school, or we deal with impulsive violence while commuting to work or attending a sporting event. Reflecting psychology in general, the dominant roles of learning and environmental influences - both social and nonsocial - have traditionally been prominent in discussions of the etiology of human aggression. Biological factors have not been considered sufficiently important to investigate in the search for ways of dealing with human aggression or violence. With recent advances in pharmacology and genetic manipulation techniques, however, new interest has developed in the biological mechanisms of both non-human and human aggression. Although aggression is certainly a complex social behavior with multiple causes, molecular biological factors should not be overlooked, as they may well lead to interventions that prevent excess aggressive behaviors. The primary goal of this book is to summarize and synthesize recent advances in the biological study of aggression. As most aggressive encounters among human and non-human animals represent a male proclivity, the research in this book describes and discusses studies using the most appropriate murine model: testosterone-dependent offensive inter-male aggression, which is typically measured in resident-intruder or isolation-induced aggression tests. The research also emphasizes various molecules that have been linked to aggression tests. The research also emphasizes various molecules that have been linked to aggression by the latest gene-targeting and pharmacological techniques. Although the evidence continues to point to androgens and serotonin (5-HT) as major hormonal and neurotransmitter factors in aggressive behavior, recent work with GABA, dopamine, vasopressin, and other factors, such as nitric oxide, has revealed significant interactions with the neural circuitry underlying aggression. This book is organized according to levels of analysis. The first section examines the genetic contributions to aggression in species ranging from crustaceans to humans. The section summarizes the involvement of various neurotransmitters and neuromodulators in aggressive behavior. The third section summarizes the influence of hormones on aggression, primarily in humans. All chapters emphasize future directions for research on aggression and reveal important domains that have received comparatively less attention in this literature. Considered together, these chapters provide up-to-date coverage of the biology of aggression by some of the leading authorities currently working in this field. Biology of Aggression will direct future research to continue the recent advances in the pharmacological and genetic approaches to understanding aggression and violence.

Bill Groneman - Battlefields of Texas (1998).jpg

Texas was the site of numerous battles both in its own war for independence from Mexico and in the Civil War. Battlefields of Texas is an overview of those significant and oftentimes controversial conflicts. Adobe Walls, Blanco Canyon, Gonzales, Salado, San Jacinto, the Alamo, Palo Duro Canyon, and Rattlesnake Springs are just a few of the many sites across the state where battles were fought. Maps of the battlefields are also included in this unique collection of Texas history. Vivid descriptions of the fields of battle, individual profiles of the participants, and retrospective analysis make this book an excellent reference for both Texas and military historians alike.
