This three-volume encyclopedia brings to light many of the documents that are such a significant part of America's history. Arranged to match the 10 eras outlined in the National Standards for United States History, this collection provides not only the documents, but also the background information to help students place the documents in their historical context. In addition to important political documents, such as the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, the collection also includes key cultural documents, such as Ralph Waldo Emerson's "American Scholar" speech, and material from President Nixon's visit with Elvis Presley. Along with the text of the documents and concise introductions to each one, Encyclopedia of American Historical Documents also provides sources for further research and a timeline to help place events in chronological order.

This book provides capsule biographies of 909 of the nation's most notable African Americans. The entries are arranged alphabetically, with all individuals meeting two general criteria for inclusion: They were born or they spent their childhoods in the United States; and they have played an important part in the development of African American children by serving as role models. Anyone who died before January 1, 1995, is not included. Activists, artists, athletes, attorneys, authors, business owners, educators, engineers, entertainers, government officials, medical doctors, military leaders and scientists: each person in this book has played a major role in 20th-century America.

"The book is beautifully written, profusely illustrated and meticulously researched—and sure to instruct and entertain any reader of Civil War history."
—Civil War News

In an 1882 speech, former Confederate president Jefferson Davis made an exuberant claim: "That battle at Sabine Pass was more remarkable than the battle at Thermopylae." Indeed, Sabine Pass was the site of one of the most decisive Civil War battles fought in Texas. But unlike the Spartans, who succumbed to overwhelming Persian forces at Thermopylae more than two thousand years before, the Confederate underdogs triumphed in a battle that over time has become steeped in hyperbole. Providing a meticulously researched, scholarly account of this remarkable victory, Sabine Pass at last separates the legends from the evidence.

In arresting prose, Edward T. Cotham, Jr., recounts the momentous hours of September 8, 1863, during which a handful of Texans—almost all of Irish descent—under the leadership of Houston saloonkeeper Richard W. Dowling, prevented a Union military force of more than 5,000 men, 22 transport vessels, and 4 gunboats from occupying Sabine Pass, the starting place for a large invasion that would soon have given the Union control of Texas.

Sabine Pass sheds new light on previously overlooked details, such as the design and construction of the fort (Fort Griffin) that Dowling and his men defended, and includes the battle report prepared by Dowling himself. The result is a portrait of a mythic event that is even more provocative when stripped of embellishment.

Hillary's Secret War is the true story of how a group of renegade journalists fought to expose America's darkest scandals through the Internet--and how the most powerful woman in the world tried to stop them.

From her own war room in the White House, Hillary Clinton commanded a secret police operation dedicated to silencing dissent, muzzling media critics, intimidating political foes, whitewashing Clinton scandals, and obstructing justice. Hillary's operatives infiltrated every level of the news media, federal law enforcement, intelligence agencies, and the federal court system.

They looked upon the unregulated datastream of cyberspace as a threat to their power, potentially devastating in its ability to bypass the controlled, corporate media. For that reason, Hillary's secret police persecuted Internet dissidents with special ferocity.

Mainstream news media spiked the story of Hillary's secret war--and of the scandals she sought to conceal. But the courageous new journalists of the Internet underground defied the odds and exposed the shocking truth about history's most corrupt presidency. This is their story.

Written with all the drama and tension of a gripping novel, this carefully researched book gives the inside story of how these modern-day patriots endured Hillary's attacks, and emerged from the battlefield to become a sprawling, innovative news source reaching tens of millions each day. Hillary's Secret War presents a tale of dogged courage and sacrifice, one of the greatest untold stories in the annals of journalism.

Hillary's Shadow Team, says Poe, will no doubt play a crucial role in smoothing the way for her planned return to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Likewise, the Internet will figure prominently in the effort to stop her.

Why did Britain's position dramatically improve between 1739 and 1763? In this study, the author examines a pivotal period in Britain's rise to power status that culminated in the defeat of France in the struggle for North America in the Seven Years' War. The central themes in this book are the choices between war and peace, America of Europe. Due weight is given to the period of the War of the Austrian Succession 1740-48, when British policy was far from successful and when the major theme was concern with European developments, and to the years of inter-war diplomacy, when the agenda was once again dominated by European developments, specifically the attempt to create a continental system of collective security to off set the Franco-Prussian alliance. Focusing on the diplomacy of the period rather than, as with the majority of works, emphasizing the dominance of a struggle with France for colonial and maritime superiority, new light is thrown on British foreign policy in this period.

The Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) of the U.S. Department of Justice is one of the smallest of the U.S. principal statistical agencies but shoulders one of the most expansive and detailed legal mandates among those agencies. Ensuring the Quality, Credibility, and Relevance of U.S. JusticeStatistics examines the full range of BJS programs and suggests priorities for data collection. BJS's data collection portfolio is a solid body of work, well justified by public information needs or legal requirements and a commendable effort to meet its broad mandate given less-than-commensurate fiscal resources. The book identifies some major gaps in the substantive coverage of BJS data, but notes that filling those gaps would require increased and sustained support in terms of staff and fiscal resources. In suggesting strategic goals for BJS, the book argues that the bureau's foremost goal should be to establish and maintain a strong position of independence.

Within the chronological framework of implantation, maturity, and transition, Atlantic American Societies traces the history of European expansion in the Americas. Suggesting a shift in the traditional analysis of history away from nationally defined boundaries, Alan Karras and John McNeill treat the Atlantic world as a whole, encouraging the reader to see the larger inter-imperial issues which governed behavior in both the new world and the old. Emphasizing the links between Africa, Europe, and the Americas, the authors outline the process of transatlantic intercultural integration that began after the voyages of Columbus.

This beautifully crafted and solidly researched book explains why and how the United States made its first commitment to Vietnam in the late 1940s. Mark Atwood Lawrence deftly explores the process by which the Western powers set aside their fierce disagreements over colonialism and extended the Cold War fight into the Third World. Drawing on an unprecedented array of sources from three countries, Lawrence illuminates the background of the U.S. government's decision in 1950 to send military equipment and economic aid to bolster France in its war against revolutionaries. That decision, he argues, marked America's first definitive step toward embroilment in Indochina, the start of a long series of moves that would lead the Johnson administration to commit U.S. combat forces a decade and a half later. Offering a bold new interpretation, the author contends that the U.S. decision can be understood only as the result of complex transatlantic deliberations about colonialism in Southeast Asia in the years between 1944 and 1950. During this time, the book argues, sharp divisions opened within the U.S., French, and British governments over Vietnam and the issue of colonialism more generally. While many liberals wished to accommodate nationalist demands for self-government, others backed the return of French authority in Vietnam. Only after successfully recasting Vietnam as a Cold War conflict between the democratic West and international communism--a lengthy process involving intense international interplay--could the three governments overcome these divisions and join forces to wage war in Vietnam.

The challenge of transforming the US Air Force into a truly integrated aerospace force is a pressing issue for our service. In Toward an Air and Space Force: Naval Aviation and the Implications for Space Power, Lt Col Mark P. Jelonek uses the historical analogy of the US Navy’s integration of aviation dur ing the interwar period as a possible model for the comprehensive integration of space into the operational Air Force. Defining integration as “the evolutionary process by which a new technology (aviation in the Navy and space power in the Air Force) becomes an inseparable part of the military service,” Colonel Jelonek describes the various policies pursued by the sea service to integrate aviation into the fleet. He contends that five policies proved indispensable to that process:
(1) promoting broad understanding of aviation within the naval establishment;
(2) demonstrating that aviation enhanced rather than threatened the battleship’s place as the premier naval weapons system of the day;
(3) creating a career path that allowed aviators to attain senior rank;
(4) ensuring that aviators remained fully conversant with surface operations; and
(5) incorporating aviation into naval war games.
Arguing that similar practices could facilitate metamorphosis of the Air Force into a true air and space force, Jelonek employs the integration policies pursued by the interwar Navy (appropriately rephrased for contemporary airmen) as a device for measuring the Air Force’s progress in integrating space into its own operational mainstream. He finds such progress has been uneven at best and cites as major impediments the lack of an official plan for air-space integration, the suspect (to aviators) operational credibility of many space officers, and an institutional tendency to mistake technological adaptation for organizational transformation. The author’s proposals for over - coming these difficulties and for promoting the full integration of space power—and space power practitioners—merit serious reflection.

Woodrow Wilson and the Roots of Modern Liberalism highlights Wilson's sharp departure from the traditional principles of American government, most notably the Constitution. Ronald J. Pestritto persuasively argues that Wilson's unfailing criticism places him clearly in line with the Progressives' assault on the originalprinciples of American constitutionalism. Drawing primarily from early writings and speeches that Wilson made during his years as a scholar, Pestritto examines the future president's clear and consistent ideologies that laid the foundation for later actions taken as a public leader.

Sisters in the Brotherhoods is an oral-history-based study of women who have, against considerable odds, broken the gender barrier to blue-collar employment in various trades in New York City beginning in the 1970s. It is a story of the fight against deeply ingrained cultural assumptions about what constitutes women's work, the middle-class bias of feminism, the daily grinding sexism of male coworkers, and the institutionalized discrimination of employers and unions.It is also the story of some gutsy women who, seeking the material rewards and personal satisfactions of skilled manual labor, have struggled to make a place for themselves amongNew York City's construction workers, stationary engineers, firefighters, electronic technicians, plumbers, and transit workers.Each story contributes to an important unifying theme: the way women confronted the enormous sexism embedded in union culture and developed new organizational forms to support their struggles, including and especially the United Tradeswomen.

As a 1950s housewife and League of Women Voters volunteer who spearheaded the city of Lincoln s switch to a strong mayor form of government, Helen Boosalis never anticipated that she herself would one day be that strong mayor and chief executive of Nebraska s capital city. Helen Boosalis s story, told by her daughter, Beth Boosalis Davis, is the story of a true pioneer of women in politics.The daughter of Greek immigrants, Boosalis achieved national prominence as the first woman president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors and as an outspoken advocate for economically distressed cities facing President Reagan s new federalism. Winning the Democratic nomination for governor of Nebraska in 1986,Helen Boosalis ran against Kay Orr in the first gubernatorial contest between two women in U.S. history. The interwoven tales of conflict and challenge, from the mayor s office to the campaign trail, combine personal insight into one woman s trailblazing political history with a compelling memoir of a half century of public service and private devotion shared by two remarkable women.
