Jeff Wallenfeldt - The American Revolutionary War and the War of 1812, People, Politics, and Power ( 2009.jpg

When you think of the American Revolution, you may picture John Hancock signing the Declaration of Independence with a fl ourish. Perhaps you envision the fi ery orations of Samuel Adams or imagine Minutemen fi ring muskets at Redcoats as they practice the form of guerrilla warfare they learned from their Indian neighbours. It can be hard to relate to these 18th-century people, with their powdered perukes, their lofty, ornate language, and what may seem to some as their willingness to fight to the death over the inconvenience of paying some small taxes imposed on them without consent. Indeed, it may seem puzzling that the colonists would choose to separate themselves from a powerful empire that not only came to their defense in the French and Indian War just two decades earlier but was also a ready trading partner for American goods. But the individuals who fought in the American Revolution were not merely quaint fi gures in a book. They were real people who risked death for a vision of what America could be and what kinds of rights free people deserved......................................

Lisa L. Miller - The Perils of Federalism, Race, P overty, and the Politics of Crime Control (2008).jpg

In the past dozen years, a number of American cities plagued by gun violence have tried to enact local laws to stem gun-related crime. Yet policymakers at the state and federal levels have very frequently stymied their efforts. This is not an atypical phenomenon. In fact, for a whole range of pressing social problems, state and federal policymakers ignore the demands of local communities that suffer from such ills the most. Lisa L. Miller asks, how does America's multi-tiered political system shape crime policy in ways that empower the higher levels of government yet demobilize and disempower local communities? After all, crime has a disproportionate impact on poor and minority communities, which typically connect crime and violence to broader social and economic inequities at the local level. As The Perils of Federalism powerfully demonstrates, though, the real control to set policy lies with the state and federal governments, and at these levels single-issue advocates--gun rights groups as well as prison, prosecutorial and law enforcement agencies--are able to shape policy over the heads of the people most affected by the issue.
There is a tragic irony in this. The conventional wisdom that emerged from the Civil Rights era was that the higher levels of government--and the federal level in particular--best served the disadvantaged, while localities were most likely to ignore the social problems resulting from racial and economic inequality. Crime policy, Miller argues, teaches us an opposite lesson: as policy control migrates to higher levels, the priorities of low-income minority communities are ignored, the realities of racial and economic inequality are marginalized, and citizens lose their voices. Taking readers from the streets of Philadelphia to the halls of Congress, she details how and why our system operates in the way that it does. Ultimately, the book not only challenges what we think about the advantages of relying of federal power for sensible and fair solutions to longstanding social problems. It also highlights the deep disconnect between the structure of the American political system and the ideals of democratic accountability.

Robert Sloan - Don't Blame the Shorts, Why Short S ellers Are Always Blamed for Market Crashes and Ho w History Is Repeating Itself (2009).jpg

01 - USA1 - Robert Sloan - Dont Blame the Shorts, Why Short Seller...arket Crashes and How History Is Repeating Itself 2009.jpg

"A useful corrective to the view of short selling as 'unpatriotic' or uniquely anti-social."--John Plender, Financial Times, November 16, 2009
"I liked this book. It was short and to the point and very well researched. As we are living in an era of history repeating itself, Mr. Sloan depicts the negative market psychology that has transcended Wall Street since the birth of our nation."
--Ted Stamas, Instablog, November 2009

On the 90th anniversary of the Crash of 1929, we find ourselves peering backwards through a virtual looking-glass to a time when global markets were in free fall, and venerable financial institutions were in tatters. Yet, here in the present, these same patterns seem to repeat, causing cable newsers, Congressmen, and commoners alike to scream the same refrain, "Blame the short sellers!"

Certainly, short sellers make convenient villains; for one thing, they win only when others lose. But in Don't Blame the Shorts, Bob Sloan taps into a 200-year-old American debate to convincingly and emphatically argue that short selling is not what ails our equities trading markets, but what keeps them honest. To Sloan, short sellers’ objectives are simple: find overvalued securities and bet against overconfident investors. It's an approach that uncovered widespread fraud at Enron, WorldCom, HealthSouth, and other failed outfits long before regulators ever set foot in the door.

Taking the long view of history, Sloan unearths the deep roots of the conflict over speculative investing and its role in our economy. It's a debate that oftentimes puts titans of American history and finance on opposite sides of the divide: Jefferson and Hamilton, over the fundamental nature of America's economic systems; a century later, J.P. Morgan and William Rockefeller, the brother of John D. Rockefeller, who was thought to be part of a cabal of short sellers that brought the country to its financial knees. Further, Sloan reintroduces us to the likes of Ferdinand Pecora, the federal prosecutor whose investigations in the early 1930s revealed a wide range of abusive practices of banks, and led to the creation of vital legislation, including the Glass-Steagal Act.

Harry M. Ward - War for Independence and the Trans formation of American Society (2000).jpg

The War for Independence had a substantial impact on the lives of all Americans, establishing a nation and confirming American identity. The War for Independence and the Transformation of American Society explores a conflict which was both civil war and revolution and assesses how Americans met the challenges of adapting to the ideals of Independence and Republicanism. Focusing on the climate of war itself and its effects on the lives of those who lived through it, this book includes discussion of:
*Recruitment and Society
*The Home Front
*Constraints on Liberty
*Women and family during the war years
*African Americans and Native Americans
Harry M. Ward offers a fascinating account of the wider dimension to the meaning of the American Revolution.

01 - USA1 - Greg Albo, Sam Gindin, Leo Panitch - In and Out of Cri...e Global Financial Meltdown and Left Alternatives 2010.jpg

In this groundbreaking study of the financial meltdown, renowned radical political economists lay bare the roots of the crisis in the inner logic of capitalism itself. Objective and detailed, this account provocatively challenges the call for a return to a largely mythical golden age of economic regulation as a check on finance capital. In addition, it deftly illuminates how the era of neoliberal free markets has been, in practice, under-girded by state intervention on a massive scale. Arguing for genuinely transformative alternatives to capitalism, and discussing how to build the collective capacity to realize these goals, this record is a critique of the crisis and an indispensable springboard for a renewed political left.

Paul Cherry - The Biker Trials, Bringing Down the Hells Angels (2005).jpg

The Quebec-chartered “Nomad” chapter of the Hells Angels had two specific goals: to monopolize the Quebec drug trade; and to expand that trade across other parts of Canada. Their war against rival dealer gangs escalated to a boiling point, taking the lives of dozens of gangsters and innocent people as it played itself out openly on Montreal’s streets. Little did the Nomads know that at the height of achieving their goals, they would also be months away from a lengthy police investigation to shut them down. The trials that followed revealed seven years of conflict and murder initiated by Maurice “Mom” Boucher, the man who was at the epicentre of this war. One criminal trial in particular turned out to be one of the longest in Canadian history. It meant convincing a jury to accept the notion that a biker gang works on the same principle as a pirate ship — even the cook knows what their common goal is. The “biker trials” brought out informants on both sides of the conflict, who, for a variety of reasons had turned on the gangs they had previously sworn loyalty to. Their testimonies revealed the arrogance of the Nomads in their pursuit of a monopoly over Quebec’s illegal drug trade. Now, Cherry reveals the inside story of the biker culture and the biker trials.

Squadron 6048 - Thomas E. Doll - United States Nav y and United States Marine Corps Over Korea (1988).jpg

Although concerned primarily wilh US Navy and Marine Corps air operations during the Korean War. this book is also meant to be both a reminder and a tribute to all who served in the Far East during the years 1950 through 1953.
All wars come at the wrong time for most people and the war in Korea was no exception. Barely had we put the Second World War behind us when we were being asked to go to the aid of a country so small that most Americans were unsure of its location. When war came to Korea on 25 June 1950. thousands of Americans were uprooted from their peaceful existence and made to cope with the situation at hand. True, not all went against their will since the draft served only the US Army. The Navy. Marine Corps, and Air Force all met the crisis with volunteers, both regular and reserve.

01 - USA1 - Randy Steffen - The Horse Soldier, 1776-1943, The Unit...Accoutrements and Equipment, Volume IV 1917-1943 1979.jpg

This is the fourth and final volume of Randy Steffen's monumental work, The Horse Soldier. It covers the final twenty-five years--the World War I years, when the United States Cavalry fought for the first time as part of an allied force; the peacetime years, when the cavalry was largely a "show" force; and World War II, when mechanization finally outmoded the horse soldier, and the horse was traded for the tank. The cavalry became history.
Like the earlier volumes in the series, this one is filled with the fruit's of the author's painstaking research. In text, two color plates, and 85 detailed drawings, he records the horse soldier's dress, his equipment, his weapons.

James H. Mittelman - Whither Globalization, The V ortex of Knowledge and Ideology (2005).jpg

Globalization is usually said to be about markets, power and culture. Whither Globalization? goes further, arguing that globalization may also be understood as a way of knowing and representing the world. Mittelman debunks several prevalent myths about globalization and 'anti-globalization', presenting alternatives to this force and indicating a new common sense about future world order. Drawing on considerable original research, this book shows how globalization itself and globalization studies have changed since 9/11. Compact and accessible, Whither Globalization? is a major contribution to the study of globalization by one of the leading scholars in the field and is essential reading for students of international relations and international political economy.

Richard W. Bulliet - The Case for Islamo-Christian Civilization (2009).jpg

"Though Islamo-Christian civilization may be a neologism, it is a creative key term that this book will make into a household word. Since 9/11 Americans have been subjected to a relentless parade of experts, from missionaries to historians to special interest advocates, all of whom warn about the difference and danger of Islam. Richard Bulliet reveals the flimsiness of their arguments. Against Samuel Huntington's "clash of civilizations" and Bernard Lewis's "What Went Wrong?," Bulliet sees a future in which the screeds of American Islamophobes and the violent dreams of Muslim extremists both are eclipsed by respect and popular following for leaders of tolerant and peaceful conscience. They are the key to our collective future as members of Islamo-Christian civilization." -- Bruce B. Lawrence, Professor of Islamic Studies, Duke University

Richard Panchyk - American Folk Art for Kids, With 21 Activities (2004)).jpg

Drawing on the natural folk art tendencies of children, who love to collect buttons, bottle caps, shells, and Popsicle sticks to create beautiful, imperfect art, this activity guide teaches kids about the history of this organic art and offers inspiration for them to create their own masterpieces. The full breadth of American folk art is surveyed, including painting, sculpture, decorative arts, and textiles from the 17th century through today. Making bubblegum wrapper chains, rag dolls, bottle cap sculptures, decoupage boxes, and folk paintings are just a few of the activities designed to bring out the artist in every child. Along the way kids learn about the lives of Americans throughout history and their casual relationships to everyday art as they cut stencils, sew needlepoint samplers, draw calligraphy birds, and design quilts. Important folk artists such as the last surviving Shakers, the legendary Grandma Moses, and the Reverend Howard Finster are also explored in sidebars throughout the book.

Alan Elsner - Gates of Injustice, The Crisis in Am erica's Prisons (2004).jpg

Gates of Injustice is an extraordinarily compelling expose of the American prison system: how more than 2,000,000 Americans came to be incarcerated; what it's really like on the inside; what it's like for the families left on the outside; and how an enormous "prison-industrial complex" has grown to support and promote imprisonment in place of virtually every other alternative. Reuters journalist Alan Elsner shows how prisons really work, how race-based gangs are able to control institutions and prey on weaker inmates, and how an epidemic of abuse and brutality has exploded across American prisons. Readers will discover the plight of 300,000 mentally ill people in prisons, virtually abandoned with little medical treatment. They'll also meet the fastest growing segment of the prison population: women. Readers go inside "supermax" prisons that cut inmates off from all human contact, and uncover the official corruption and brutality that riddles jail systems in major cities like Chicago, Boston, Los Angeles, and New York. Finally, they'll learn prisons accelerate the spread of infectious diseases throughout the broader society, just one of the many ways the prison epidemic touches everyone, even if they've never met anyone who's gone to jail.

Catherine H. Zuckert, Michael Zuckert - The Truth about Leo Strauss, Political Philosophy and Americ an Democracy (2008).jpg

01 - USA1 - Catherine H. Zuckert, Michael Zuckert - The Truth abou...auss, Political Philosophy and American Democracy 2008.jpg

Is Leo Strauss truly an intellectual forebear of neoconservatism and a powerful force in shaping Bush administration foreign policy? The Truth about Leo Strauss puts this question to rest, revealing for the first time how the popular media came to perpetuate an oversimplified view of a complex and wide-ranging philosopher. In doing so, it corrects our perception of Strauss, providing the best general introduction available to the political thought of this misunderstood figure.
Catherine and Michael Zuckert—both former students of Strauss—guide readers here to a nuanced understanding of how Strauss’s political thought fits into his broader philosophy. Challenging the ideas that Strauss was an inflexible conservative who followed in the footsteps of Nietzsche, Heidegger, and Carl Schmitt, the Zuckerts contend that Strauss’s signature idea was the need for a return to the ancients. Through their work, they conclude that Strauss was a sober defender of liberal democracy, aware of both its strengths and its weaknesses.
Balanced and accessible, The Truth about Leo Strauss is a must-read for anyone who wants to more fully comprehend this enigmatic philosopher and his much-disputed legacy.
“The Truth about Leo Strauss is the most balanced and insightful book yet written about Strauss’s thought, students, and political influence. It dispels myths promulgated by both friends and foes and persuasively traces the conflicting paths that American thinkers indebted to Strauss have taken.”—William Galston, Brookings Institution
